Most people would describe Ella as a sweet, pretty, innocent girl whose natural joy and light have gifted her with a loving family and a devoted husband.
They would be wrong.
Ella is as manipulative as they come, hiding her sly mind behind a pair of large blue eyes. Ella has absolute control over herself, you will never be able to cause her to show visible signs of emotion unless she wants you to see it. She is extremely intelligent and uses her wits to get her from height to height without others understanding that she is pulling the strings.
That isn't to say that Ella has no compassion for others. She cares and loves her step-family immensely. She will happily help them if they are in need, provided that it doesn't impinge on her own happiness.
Quirks:
Ella has a soft spot for butterflies and, given the option, could spend all day in the greenhouse set up at the palace for exotic butterflies.
She also has a fondness for sleeping by fires, loving the warmth and earned the nickname Cinder or Cinderella from her sisters for this habit.
Strengths:
She is an expert at reading people and figuring out how to manipulate them, she understands what makes people tick.
Ella is extremely intelligent.
Weaknesses:
Ella is very selfish and self-centered and will think first of herself before anyone else.
She feels detached from other people and finds it hard to grow real relationships.
She has no skill with magic, relying on her Fairy godmother.
Born to a wealthy and loving merchant family, Ella spent the first few years of her life with everything a young girl could ask for. Her parents adored her. Then her mother died, text book stuff really - fever, sweats and then poof, gone. Ella was left with a father who turned to his work to hide his grief. Years past and Ella grew into a confident young teenager. In her thirteenth year, almost six years after the death of her mother, Ella's father wrote home proclaiming that he had remarried. Shocked, but also excited at the prospect of a new mother - not to mention two new step-sisters - Ella waited with anticipation for the day when her new family would arrive.
They were beautiful, all three of them. Ella's step-mother, Countess De Layne, had creamy white skin, thick black hair and red lips that could make a man fall to his knees. Her daughters were every bit as lovely and gentle as their mother.
They expected to find a young girl just as lively and beautiful as her father had described to them. Instead they got Ella. She was confident, yes, and manipulative. She had a way of tilting her head and appearing the picture of innocence while secretly planning how to exploit your weaknesses. She all but ran the family manor while her father was away. Now, with a new family to live with, she had to learn to apply her manipulations to her equals. It proved slightly more difficult; she had to be cunning in her suggestions, planting ideas and helping them grow each day until her new mother or sisters believed it was their idea in the first place. But they proved compliant to her wishes and she began to dream bigger.
The Prince. Stunning, a born leader, incredibly rich and respected and above all else single. A Masked Ball was called for where one young lady would be asked to be his bride and princess. The Countess and her daughters, including Ella, were all invited. It was the perfect opportunity and with little to lose and much to gain the young woman began to plan. She arrived late in a flowing dress of pale blue, the same colour as her eyes, a mask of white crystal covering the upper half of her face. The room went silent and gracefully she descended the stairs, her gown sweeping around her. The prince approached, spell bound and bowed. They danced, they talked and eventually they shared one kiss under the moonlight. Then Ella left, leaving a single glass slipped behind as she rushed down the palace steps.
The spell, when coupled with her own charm and wits, had worked perfectly. She said a silent thanks to her fairy godmother who had conspired with her in her goal to snag a prince.
It took only two days before the prince found her again. He produced the glass slipped, her foot slid into it and with that he declared that he had found his princess. Ella smiled sweetly, her joy at his obvious devotion only beaten by the sense of satisfaction she felt at getting what she wanted.
"That's me, Cinderella. What do you think?"
