Description

Real Name: Jessica Park

Nickname/Codename/Alias: Shade

Allegiance: The Paragons of Atlanta

Gender: Female

Age: 22

Appearance: Out of costume: Jessica has a shapely, rather defined face, though somewhat circular. She is a natural redhead, though she has dyed her hair dirty-blonde. Her casual attire is unremarkable, usually consisting of a hoodie and sweatpants, and a mauve beanie. Like most of her family, Jessica has forest green eyes and fair skin.

In-costume: The basic layer of Shade's outfit is a dark purple military-esque coverall. Underneath are flexible ballistic materials, to protect her from bullet and knife wounds. Shade makes use of black special-ops combat boots and gloves. Over her suit, Shade wears a dark purple cape and a hood, resembling a cloak of sorts. The cape is not merely for aesthetics; it contains kevlar, acts a a parachute and can conceal her arms if necessary. It and the hood are detachable in case of emergencies. To store her items, Shade utilized three black utility belts: one worn across the chest (like a sash), one around the hips and one around her right thigh. To conceal her face and offer protection, Shade wears a black balaclava with filters. Over that she wears white-lensed military goggles. Overall, the suit's dark purple and black hues make it hard to spot at night, Shade's primary patrol hours.

Personality: While not asocial per se, Jessica tend to keep to herself. Unless to spoken to directly, she will tend to listen to a conversation far more often than contribute to it. It is difficult to rile her into anger, or any strong emotion in particular. Often, she prefers thinking things through alone rather than discussing things with her (oft capricious) partners. When she is speaking with others, her remarks are often sarcastic or matter-of-fact, to avoid any emotional connotations. However, despite her cold demeanor, Jessica has a strong moral compass and will not tolerate egocentric or detrimental acts; especially ones of violent nature against civilians. Not subscribing to any religion or school of thought, Jessica is a self-made individual with her own views of the world, though one could compare her to an existentialist due to studying the works of Friedrich Nietzsche, John Locke and Aristotle.

Personal History: Jessica was born in Atlanta, Georgia to a wealthy arms manufacturer, William Park, and his wife Melissa Park. Her father was an ex-Delta Force operative, who started the company ArmaMax with a few friends after his service. She has one older brother, Charles, who is now an electrician. Jessica always had an interesting in adventuring, and her hobbies consisted of such things as deer hunting, fishing and other outdoorsman activities in the Piedmont Mountains.

Despite being one of the wealthiest students in her school, Jessica was always down-to-earth, putting her nose to her studies. She was never much good in foreign languages or the arts, but she excelled in science, math and social studies. After her high school career, Jessica enlisted in the military as a form of public service, but a few years after her induction into the 75th Ranger Regiment, the United States Federal Government collapsed. Without any need for it anymore, the military was disbanded and the remaining servicemen with their separate ways. Without her clear-cut future, Jessica was left vengeful and confused. Despite her solitary nature, seeing the city of Atlanta (and the entire nation for that matter) fall to pieces left her with the desire to assist those worse-off than she. A solution was at hand: Crash, also known as Gary Jackson, leader of the Paragons, was a local vigilante and so-called "superhero" who led a group of civilians to crusade against crime and violent chaos. Jessica had no qualms with the idea, though her austere father did. She and her mother eventually talked him into keeping Jessica's identity a secret, because though he found the notion of masked vigilantes unnerving, he did understand her motives. Jessica choose the codename Shade, a synonym for specter or ghost, and applied for the Paragon's night shift. She's been patrolling the nasty streets of Atlanta ever since.

Powers, Weapons, Ect.: No superpowers. Shade's remarkably high intelligence manifests itself when she is problem-solving, and her deductive reasoning is considered the best among her colleagues. Aside from her brain, Shade is well-armed to deal with most criminals. In her utility belts Shade carries smoke pellets, stun grenades, a grappling hook pistol, a handgun that takes tranquilizer, non-lethal electric stun and lethal rounds, tracers, handcuffs, first-aid, a survival knife and more. She also carries a wrist computer. At the age of 19, Shade was among the first women to complete Ranger school, showing she had as strong a body as a mind.

Weaknesses: Despite her flexibility, Shade is only one woman, and often has the problem of overworking herself. Obviously, she is not omnipresent, and can only be in one place at one time. On top of this, she thinks with a logical mind, and often has trouble sympathizing with others; if they are not used to this, this might push them away. Shade takes failure personally, and will shoulder too much blame if her team fails to complete their goal. She also has difficultly winding down, and can be a bit too stiff off-duty. Combat-wise, the lack of any metahuman powers forces her to outsmart and not out-muscle any metahuman foes. In a straight-up fistfight, she will not last against someone with above-human strength.

Any additional information we should know: One of my two main characters. Partners with Scarecrow.

Having just come back from a grave injury, Shade was still getting used to moving her shoulder blade abruptly again. On a patrol about two months ago, one simple mental lapse earned Shade a nine millimeter to the acromion. Fortunately, she was in very good shape, and managed to get back to her midnight gallivanting in just six weeks.

During that period Scarecrow had patrolled with Buccaneer, earning a sort of respect for the swashbuckling vigilante. He could tell that Jonathan didn't particularly like his temperamental behavior, however, and preferred to patrol alone. When Shade was available again, Scarecrow and Buccaneer parted with a mutual respect, knowing any future partnerships wasn't the best of ideas.

Scarecrow wasn't afraid to admit that while his association with Buccaneer was fun while it lasted, he missed Shade. The two were polar opposites in many areas, and that's perhaps why they worked so well together. Shade was conservative in her thought processes, Scarecrow was brash. Shade spoke little, Scarecrow was a loud-mouth. Shade was stoic, Scarecrow sentimental. In the end, it balanced out well and some even considered the duo the best at fighting crime since Crash and the Silver Huntress.

On this particular night, Shade and Scarecrow were on their usual patrol of Zone 5. Zone 5 was definitely the worst of zones, as it was in Zone 5 where much of Atlanta's drug trafficking, theft and murder took place. Shade and Scarecrow were both used to even the most heinous of crimes, though both still took their war on crime personally; Scarecrow was just much more open about it.

At the moment, Shade was standing at the edge of a medium-height building, keeping an eye out for miscreants. To an observer, Shade might have looked like a violet spirit, ever-watching over the city. Scarecrow, on the other hand, was busy playing Bejeweled on his cell phone.

"I swear to Christ, if I see one more topaz on my screen-"

"Alex, shut the hell up for five seconds, will ya?" Shade barked, snapping around to her burlap-wrapped partner. Scarecrow grumbled something expletive before relenting.

"Yes'm."

Rolling her eyes, Shade addressed the matter no further.

"Sometimes I just want to strang-"

Interrupting Shade's train of thought was a loud crash, followed by laughter and, oddly enough, gunfire. By the time she had discerned where the noise was coming from, several bodies were lain throughout the street, including

"Jonathan? What's he doing out here?"

The mention of Buccaneer's name got Scarecrow to put his phone away.

"Is Jon in trouble?"

"Yeah, he appears to unconscious." She informed her comrade.

Spreading her cape, Shade toed the edge before turning to Scarecrow.

"Meet me down there."

As Shade willfully fell off the building, Scarecrow looked down, shrugged, made a cushion of darkness and leapt.

"Geronimo!"

When Shade had landed (comfortably thanks to the cape's aerodynamic nature), she quickly realized that the thug standing over Buccaneer was the only one conscious. In fact, one thug appeared to have been gunned dead. The unsuspecting goon was about to pull Buccaneer's bandana off when Shade grabbed him but the back of his neck and bashed his head into the side of one of the nearby cars. He was out like a light before he knew what hit him. Scarecrow rushed up behind soon after, glancing over the bodies.

"Uh oh, looks like Buc got himself into a little spat with drug dealers. Got licked good."

While Scarecrow surveyed the scene, Shade kneeled down and began to examine Buccaneer.

"Buc, are you awake?"

His vision was becoming more hazy, either that or there were now two identical criminals in front of him about to unmask him and probably blow his brains out. He started reaching slowly for the pin of the flash-bang attached to his belt.

Then they came.

Falling down from the rooftop above, surrounded in the bright lights of concussion, Shadeā€™s cloak easily catching the breeze, it seemed to Jon as if an angel was coming to his rescue, then she smashed the criminalā€™s head against the car and the angel metaphor slipped away. He caught sight of Scarecrow falling in the background, in the dazzling stars that danced around the pirateā€™s eyes he looked likeā€¦ Scarecrow.

He heard voices calling out, as if emanating from the end of a long tunnel.

ā€œLicked goodā€ā€¦ ā€œBuc, are you awake?"

He let the words sink in for a few seconds as a degree of clarity returned to his mind. ā€œNow all the licking around here was done by me and maybe a catā€¦has anyone seen a cat?ā€

Jon stood up, taking more than a moment to steady himself, he felt the back of his head it seemed the bandana had absorbed the majority of the blood and he hoped he looked in better shape than he felt.

He took a quick look around at the bodies; some of the criminals would need patching up before they could leave em to the cops one was definitely dead, poor ba***rd. There were bullet holes in the walls, cat scratches to faces and he had taken a mighty thump to the head, what a rush! He suddenly realized he was grinning inanely.

ā€œHow do guys?ā€ He said, tipping his hat to the lady. ā€œFancy seeing you here, thanks for picking that last one off for me. Glad to see you back on your feet Shadesā€ He pronounced her codename wrong, as usual.

"It's no trouble." Shade replied, tucking her arms behind her cape out of habit and ignoring the misapplied codename. "But what exactly went on here?" She questioned, glancing around the crime scene. "And more importantly, what're even you doing out here?"

While Shade was addressing Buccaneer, Scarecrow was investigating further. Upon closer inspection, he noticed that one of the thugs had been carved up by another's SMG. "A shame" he thought. Scarecrow - like most Paragons - believed that lethal force should only be a last resort tactic, and clearly this situation escalated out of hand. After kneeling and closing the man's eyes, Scarecrow got up and went around to the other thugs, treating any excessive wounds.

"Yeah, I'm wonderin' what Jess is wonderin'." He called out, pulling his first-aid off his belt.

Shade flinched at the mention of her real name. She had told him at least a dozen times to never say it on patrol.

"What happened? I assume that white powdery stuff in the bags is crack; did ya rush in and try and bust 'em?"

"What am I doing here? Just some night time exercise" He grinned. There was no point denying how things had gone down, ā€œYeah I rushed in, not quite guns blazing but close enough. Think I only got a single round off during the whole affair.ā€ He gestured towards the perp with the hole in his leg just above his knee. Judging by the amount of blood, heā€™d missed the artery and the joint, the guy would probably make a full recovery in jail.

ā€œSure I could have given them the chance to throw down, but even if there were three of us, when have you guys ever known a gangbanger to throw down even when outnumbered?ā€ he said ā€˜And whereā€™d the fun in that be if they did itā€™ he thought to himself. Walking over to the Tiger member who was not too subtly trying to reach over to where his SMG had fallen. Jon kicked away the gun, brought the mans hands up behind his back and briskly tied the perpā€™s hands up with a few cable ties he kept in his belt.

He picked up his sword and walked over to the white bags, the sword stabbed cleanly through the bag and he brought up the residue on the sword for inspection, he licked ā€œNot crack, pure unadulterated cocaine, wait a secondā€¦ā€ He looked around at the fallen criminals, ā€œDonā€™t they seem a little bit over armed for small-time Tiger drug dealers and thereā€™s five of them for four small bags of snow. Strange, especially on Tiger turfā€ He turned round to race Crow ā€œDonā€™t you remember last week when that burglar pulled an assault rifle on us the other day, that was weirdā€¦ why on earth are the dirt of society arming up all of a sudden?ā€

Turning to face Shade, he had a few years on her but heā€™d have been a fool not to have noticed her keen mind even though sheā€™d been out of the field for the majority of the short time heā€™d been with the Paragons ā€œWhat do you think Shady, new arms dealer in town?ā€

While he wondered around the streets, Bill's thoughts were interrupted by gunfire. Finally, some action. He quickly grabbed his radio and spoke into it; "Gunshots in... Zone 5, I think. I'm gonna check it out, best to send some forces to the area as well."

After he hooked his radio back to his chest pocket, Bill stuffed his left hand into one of his pouches and pulled out a few metal rings. He held one ring in his fist, between his thumb and forefinger in a position which showed he was ready to flick the ring. With his weapons in his hand, he sprinted off towards the gunfire. Taking the fast route of climbing up a building via some boxes and metal fire escapes to run across the roofs.

Once he arrived at the area, Bill noticed a scatter of bodies on the ground. Some where groaning in pain, one seemed as dead as a fly after shocking it. He climbed down to notice three guys were still standing, two had covered faces, the other dressed as a pirate. What the hell?

"Atlanta Police Department. Care to explain what happened here?" Bill ordered in a stern voice, the only time he seems serious is when he is doing his job. Maybe that will impress the Chief. He raised his left arm and pointed it towards the three, the metal ring glistened in the light and was held ready to be flicked towards the three if they were to do anything stupid. He also stuffed his other hand into the pouch containing his iron sand. It was uncommon for people to evade his shot, so he was ready to fight with his primary weapon if needed.

"It's the not the quality of the arms that scares me." Shade answered, observing Scarecrow and Buccaneer apprehend the remaining goons. "It's the necessity. Why on Earth would Tiger mooks need SCARS and MP7s on their own turf? Especially for something like a coke transfer. If you ask me, it's not a new arms dealer; the gangs are just reaching further into their stashes because they feel threatened for whatever reason."

Before Shade could switch topics and scold Buccaneer's precarious modus operandi, an APD officer suddenly approached from the west. Scarecrow had just finished rounding up the four restrained thugs in a line, leaving the dead fifth one to be dealt with by the proper officials. Shade couldn't help but wonder what exactly the cop was doing with his arm, but she kept her trap shut and complied.

"Evening officer. My associate here just broke up a drug transfer, rather messily might I add." She answered, purposefully deriding Buccaneer. "We've cuffed most of them, but one was killed via friendly fire."

Before the drop of the nukes, a vigilante who caused a death even indirectly would have to answer to a tribunal. Nowadays, the law simply had neither the time nor patience to try every crimefighter who's patrol turned ugly. If a Paragon claimed a criminal was killed on accident, well most APD officers simply trusted them enough to take their word for it. What this particular cop would do was still up in the air, however, so Shade played her cards and prayed Buccaneer would keep his mouth shut.

Bill took a look at the weaponry and the Tiger members. "What are they doing with these kinds of guns..." He spoke to himself and looked back at the three. "Well, I see that you guys did a good join with detaining these guys." Bill lowed his arm and placed the metal rings back into his pocket.

He turned to the pirate and spoke, noticing the blood dripping down his neck. "Were you the one who caused damage to these guys? You're the only one who obviously shows that they resisted." He raised his radio to his mouth and spoke into it; "Bill here, reporting a small shootout and a drugs bust. Three guys have detained them all, one's a pirate who i think attacked the druggies, the other two are some masked guys. Requesting some forces to take the druggies into custody. Thanks"

"Oh yeah, who are you guys?" Bill asked the three out of curiosity. They seem familiar, did he see pictures of them? Or were they described to him before. It doesn't matter. Things are going the way they should be. "What are we gonna do about this guys death..."

Judge preferred the night. It was dark and cold, perfect for his business. The darkness lent the criminal element of the city a false sense of security. Humans were diurnal creatures by nature. They had evolved to see bright colors, but this required light. Thus, humans found themselves at a disadvantage at night. Time and nocturnal predators had long since taught mankind to fear the dark. As time passed, though, criminals learned to use the darkness as a shield and a cloak. They took advantage of most people being hardwired by habit and genetics to sleep during the night along with the lack of light to hide their activities in the darkness. They learned to prey on the weak and unfortunate in the darkness. What they had forgotten was that most predators were prey for an even more dangerous predator.

Judge was that predator.

The masked vigilante surveyed the streets from his position upon a building, his infrared goggles chasing away the darkness as he he looked. He had been waiting for hours, but it did not matter to him. This point in Zone 5 was infamous for a particular type of illicit service. Sooner or later, a target would appear. Most scum suffered from this particular weakness. Sure enough, a man wearing the colors of the Tigers parked his a motorcycle in front of a ramshackle building and began to converse with a scantily clad Eurasian woman. The number of orange stripes on his jacket indicated he was a mid-ranking member, important enough to know more than the average grunt, but not important enough to be missed. A shark's grin appeared beneath Judge's mask.

His actions were quick, professional, and, above all, efficient. He shot his grappling hook at the front of the building and swung over to kick the man in the chest one smooth motion. The woman screamed and backed away, but Judge ignored her. Instead, he drew his ninjato and held it to the man's neck, his foot pinning his left hand to the ground before he could reach for his gun.

"The gangs are quiet. You will tell me why," Judge's synthesized voice intoned. The man's eyes widened and his body broke up in a cold sweat.

"I ain't telling you nothing! I recognize you. You'll just kill me afterwards!" the man gasped. Judge stabbed his right arm. The man screamed.

"I will pass judgment. Your cooperation will determine your punishment," Judge noted. He positioned his sword above his side, "It takes a long time to die of a stabbed appendix. There are few worse deaths."

"Alright, alright! Please... Just have mercy..." the man pleaded, "Someone's knocking us off! Someone other than you and the others masks. Whoever they are, they're really good. The boss is meeting the other bosses somewhere tonight. I don't know where."

Judge frowned. While he approved of people cleaning house, he disliked not knowing something, especially something this big. He looked down at the thug.

"I will not kill you."

"Oh, thank you! Thank you!" he cried only to scream as Judge slashed his ninjato across his eyes.

"You cannot kill what you cannot see. To enter the Tigers, you must kill at least one person. You will be unable to kill anymore."

"Damn you, I'll kill you for this!"

Judge ignored him as he sheathed his ninjato. He would have to clean both the sheath and the blade later tonight. Shots rang out in the distance. He mounted the motorcycle.

"Nice bike," he intoned. He revved the engine, but paused as the prostitute searched the man's pockets. He gripped its hilt and the woman gulped.

"I-I'll just call the hospital," she stated.

"Cover his eyes with a cloth and put pressure on it. He may bleed out otherwise," he said. He revved the motorcylce again and sped in the direction of the shots. It only took five minutes to appear at the scene. Buccaneer, Shade, Scarecrow, and a police officer he did not recognize stood amidst the bodies. He spoted the automatic weapons. They fit the thug's story. He dismounted the motorcycle. Judge fought the urge to roll his eyes at the statement he heard from the cop.

"What are we gonna do about this guys death..."

"His life was forfeit. Bury him if it makes you feel better. You'll be doing him a greater honor than he afforded his victims."

He nodded at the other vigilantes, his eyes focusing on the one he respected most.

"Shade... What do you have on the ones targeting the gangs?" he asked

"Now ain't this turnin' into a party?" Scarecrow clamored as yet another person made themselves known; this time it was the infamous Judge. Lifting up his mask just enough to unveil his mouth, Scarecrow lit up a cigarette and decided to let Shade speak to Judge. He had done what he could, leaving the crime scene to be dealt with by the police. Buccaneer was probably about to be questioned anyways.

"Judge... What do you want?" Shade inquired, not exactly hospitable to the prospect of talking with Judge. Judge's more vicious tenancies reflected poorly on the Paragons, even though he was not one of them and they did not condone torture or unnecessary killing. When you there's a vigilante who is just as violent as the criminals he fights, he doesn't bode well with the more legitimate crimefighters. "I'm not exactly up to giving intel to you of all people."
