GENERALX APPEARANCE

For years, Nathan was a gangly teen-aged boy who seemed to eat his body weight in food every day, but just this past summer before his senior year, he finally filled out so he didn't look like a rubber band that was stretched too far. Instead, you could finally hug him without being stabbed by his skeleton. Everything sharp about his figure softened, even if his personality is still a little pointy. He's definitely attractive with eyes that are bright gems of sapphire and emerald and his enamoring smirk. His demeanor and body language exudes confidence, but not much warmth. While he's not weak in any way, he is not built out of knots of defined muscles. In fact, he simply looks quite lean, not much of a threat, but between his broad shoulders and muscled biceps, he's still a tough opponent.
While he knows he's nice on the eyes and is well aware of the saying "If you got it, flaunt it", he hardly wears anything besides superhero tee shirts and jeans with a bomber jacket if it's cold out. And to add to that, he hardly ever brushes his hair in the morning so it looks like a brown puff ball on the top of his head, sticking out in every direction.

ConfidentRelaxedSensitiveAngry StubbornRoughAdventurous

___Personality

Nate is definitely confident in every sense of the world. He won't hold his tongue or shy away from a challenge because he blindly believes that he, in a sense, is invincible. It's as if he knows nothing in this world could hurt him because he's going too fast. His confidence naturally draws people to him, but he chooses the people he wants to be surrounded by rather carefully. However, if you are one of the few people he likes, he won't let anything happen to you or allow you do something stupid because at this point, you are too damn important to him and he went through like, a bazillion scenarios in his head why you would be a great person to be around and he's not just going to let you throw that away so whether you like it or not, he's going to give you advice and maybe be a little bossy until you stop being dumb. While he seems pretty uptight, he's actually quite relaxed, he hardly stresses about anything and he knows his limits, so he's hardly ever overwhelmed by student life. Then again, he doesn't do a majority of the work assigned in class, so I guess there's not much to worry about anyways. Nathan is also very sensitive, although he would never admit it even if you stuck ice picks under his finger nails. He cares too much at times and needs to chill out. Especially when it comes to his friends, he cares an awful lot and would rather see himself curled up on the ground in agony than anyone he loves. Although, he's not exactly a stranger to pain either. He's been in too many fist fights to count and admittedly, most of them were his fault. What can he say, he likes to push pricks' buttons until they lash out. There's a lot of anger buried deep inside his soul and fights are the best for him to blow off steam, even looking at it as a hobby every once in a while. Nate is also stubborn as hell. He will adamantly argue with you, even if he knows for a fact that he is wrong. This makes him pretty annoying if he's fighting with you, but if it's on the flip side and he's backing you up, you can pretty much just lean back and wait until your opponent rolls their eyes, sighs exasperatedly, and storms off while Nathan taunts them relentlessly. While Nathan is pretty awesome to have as a friend, if he dislikes you or is indifferent, he's kind of a prickly person. He might not respond to your questions or simply ignore you, but that's just until he either gets to know you a little more or fights you. Above all, Nathan is adventurous. He wants to see every crevice of the earth and every star in the sky and know how small he really is. He wants to see everything and be everywhere, an impossible task, but it will not deter him.

LIKES

Fighting ▮ He gets a sort of high when he can send someone doubling over to the ground in pain. It males him feel superior and in a weird way, adequate. ◗
The Winter ▮ WHEN ALL THE BUGS ARE DEAD AND ROTTING IN HELL. ◗
Loud Music ▮ Especially if it's angry music and he can blast it as loud as he wants. ◗
Kites ▮ No explanation needed, kites are fun as heck. ◗

Image

Image

DISLIKES

Annoying People ▮ Persistence will especially annoy him or people who are just too tense. They need to take a deep breath, stop talking, and relax. ◗
The Summer ▮ WHEN ALL THE BUGS ARE ALIVE AND SWARMING UNDER THE SUN. ◗
Cicadas ▮ He hates all bugs, but especially Cicadas because if they're around, there's a fuck ton of them in the world, making that hideous noise for days. ◗
People Who Eat Bugs ▮ That's unnatural, uncomfortable, unnecessary, and sickening. ◗

STRENGTHS

Slacking Off ▮ If this was an Olympic sport, he would be the world champion. ◗
Anger ▮ While some might not see this as a strength, it definitely makes Nathan give out on helluva sucker punch. ◗
Protective ▮ He will defend those he loves all the more ferociously. ◗
Controlling His Emotions ▮ He knows how to keep himself civil and in check and won't do anything rash unless you do soething to piss him off. ◗

Image

WEAKNESSES

School ▮ Nate isn't that smart. He's definitely not stupid, but he doesn't even try when it comes to school and his grades show it. ◗
Cares too Much ▮ He can become blinded by his desperation to defend his friends, so he can make stupid decisions if he is thinking more about them than himself. ◗
Working Under Pressure ▮ DON'T RUSH HIM, YOU'LL FREAK HIM OUT!!!!!! ◗
Poisonous Bugs ▮ Bugs are terrifying in general, but bugs that can kill you? No way, no thanks, no how. ◗

Image

QUIRKS

Nathan is more or less, a tough guy, but throw a fake spider on his desk and he'll flip out. He'll scream and throw himself away from it and push another person towards it so they can deal with it. If he gets past that initial fear, he keeps at least two cans of raid in his back pack and he'll spray the bug from a distance. He also likes kites a lot so he tapes a few on his dorm room wall or ceiling.

Image

FEARS

The most obvious one is his irrational fear of bugs or insects, but he is also afraid of losing the people he loves because nothing could be more painful in his mind. Nate also fears that he'll dies before he can see all he wants to see which is a very large list, mind you.

POWER
Nathan can summon swarms of insects at will, from locusts to wasps to spiders to ladybugs using Insect Manipulation. He usually uses Locusts because they already swarm naturally, so it's easier for him to determine where they'll go.

LIMITATIONS
Nate can only summon a few thousand bugs at a time, any more than that become hard to control and just too uncomfortable for him. he also can't summon more than one kind of bug at a time. For example if he chooses to swarm bees, he can't swarm bees and grasshoppers, just bees. It also helps if it is a season where there is a lot of bugs in the first place. In the Winter when all the bugs are more or less dead, he can't summon two thousand Cicadas because they're already dead.

___Biography

Things weren't bad at home when Nathan left home for the Academy. They still aren't. He still gets regular check-ins from his parents and they still send him birthday presents and they still love him and his younger sister, Abbie, but it took a long time to get to this point. A big problem was Nate's fear. It hindered him from doing new things and going outside. There's always a point when the people around you get mad at you for being so scared. They want you to move past this silly, childish phase and grow up. It was obnoxious that he wouldn't kill a bug himself, but run crying to his parents. Around the time he was twelve and was "squandering" his Summer break by sitting inside all day, it became quite clear to his parents that he wasn't just being dramatic about his catatonic fear of anything creepy crawly and for a while they simply didn't know what else to do other than tell Nathan it was okay to be scared, but he could move past it with some help. Then things got worse throughout Middle School for him. He began to fight the other kids who were bullying his friends or throwing bugs at him. He would tackle them to the floor and attack them with a flurry of wild and angry punches. Then came the bugs. It started with fruit flies just because they were the smallest and easiest to summon that they came without knowledge of Nathan. A couple hundred suddenly swarmed the face of the kid he was on top of, forcing their way into his eyes and nose and mouth. Nathan scrambled off of him faster than he even thought possible of himself. From then on, it progressed to flies. Then yellow jackets. Then wasps. And the stories around the school just got more and more outrageous surrounding Nathan. They insisted he kept bugs in his backpack and he would release them on the people who bullied him. One of the crazier ones determined that he somehow kept bugs in him mouth and would release them from there. All the while, Nathan's fear of bugs became more and more persistent and he became all too aware of them. A ladybug on his windowsill, a flurry of moths conglomerating around the porch light at night. It was driving him crazy and the anxiety would even force him to release fits of anger out on his parents and sister. Then help appeared in the form of a Rorschach Academy brochure that fell into the Straymoore's mailbox one Wednesday afternoon. While none of them were wild about the idea of sending Nathan away, it was obvious he needed to get over his fear, whether he wanted to or not. So with many heart felt good-byes and a few tears, Nathan was sent to Rorschach to overcome his fear of bugs.

ImageImageThe silence in the room spoke volumes. The five of them sat around the wooden table made of harsh grain, like scars carved into a wizened face. The table itself was indeed old; so old none of the people currently sitting around it could remember a time the table had not been the centerpiece of the room. It had been at the academy since the building had been erected, through every renovation and update, and its weathered surface almost out of place among the slate gray concrete of the new walls. And yet, throughout every modernization, the table had remained. No one even questioned it anymore. No matter what happened, the table would always stay. It was a little island of comfort, provided some sense of ease to the people seated at its rickety chairs. Whatever bleak situation was approaching, at least the table would always stand.

This time, however, they weren't so certain. What they were about to be confronted with could topple everything the board had been working towards for centuries-- including the table. All the members sat in pure silence, not a sound uttered. The thick air of unease was palpable.

"We have to fight," the board director finally said, shattering the fragile web of quiet that had laced the room.

"With what army?" came the quick retort from a wiry female with silvery hair.

A new voice chimed in. "You act like we don't have very capable fighters on our side, Patricia."

"Not nearly as many as they have," Patricia responded immediately.

The bulky male opened his mouth to speak, but was quickly cut off by the director.

"George, Trisha, that's enough from the two of you. If we don't have sufficient numbers, we'll create them. We have a school full of talented young souls just waiting for a purpose."

George and Trisha glanced in each other's direction, the same look in both their eyes: uncertainty. The two were used to bickering-- they did so frequently-- but theirs was a friendship that could last through the ages. The many years spent working together had solidified their relationship long ago, and while their friendly rivalry never faded, their connection bordered on telepathic.

They directed their skeptical gazes to the director, who responded with a cool stare. There were several moments of uninterrupted silence before any more was spoken.

"That's ridiculous."

The director focused his gaze on Patricia. "How so?"

There was an edge to his voice like she had never heard before, something akin to serrated glass. So this was the voice of desperation.

"These children are terrified. Shaping them into capable soldiers in under a year? It's, well, frankly, it's impossible," George chipped in while Trisha was busy examining the harsh lines of the director's aging face.

Again, a tense silence permeated the air. Then, a sudden scraping noise as the director pushed back his chair and stood. "Figure it out," were the last words he spoke before stalking out of the room. The two members that had been silent the entire exchange followed his suit, leaving George and Patricia in the suddenly much colder room. A shiver ran through Trisha, and she rubbed her arms to ease the goosebumps.

This time, the silence was blissful as the two stewed in their own thoughts and worries. It was George that eventually broke it.

"Our job starts tomorrow then."

"You know we can't let them know what's happening."

"You're not suggesting we just go on pretending everything's the same as it always was, are you?"

"That's exactly what I'm suggesting. We should delay the pandemonium for as long as possible."

"I agree, but... should we really be keeping them all in the dark about this?"

"Yes."

A pause.

"Alright. Fair enough. I'll see you tomorrow."

"Tomorrow," she agreed.

A moment of mutual sympathy and self-pity passed between them. Then, they went their separate ways, dreading the very next day where they'd tackle a task that was sure to fall harder and faster than Goliath himself. They could only hope their students would find a way to overcome their worst fears.
