Shades of Penumbra

Shades of Penumbra

0 INK

The word Vampire is known throughout the world from west to east, north to south but all our lives we've been told that it's just stories and legends. That's what they want you to think.

4,004 readers have visited Shades of Penumbra since TurtleSoup created it.

Introduction

Being a Sandbox roleplay there is no fixed plotline to follow and what happens in this world is entirely in your hands.

Image

It is a commonly accepted fact that Vampires aren’t real. This however is just a ruse, it is an age old tact to hide yourself in plain sight in order to remain the best hidden. This is exactly what the Vampires have taken to doing.

If you wanted to make the entire world ignorant to your existence the best thing to do is to turn yourself into fiction, make the masses think you are nothing but stories and myths. In doing this vampires have led quiet and unhindered lives, without the ever impending problem of mortals that they once suffered.

There are of course a set few of humans who not only know of the existence of vampires but have set out on missions to rid the world of their kind, some choose this occupation through the loss of loved-ones whilst others have been hunting the undead for generations.

Just south of the Canadian border somewhere in America sits a bustling city, in day time it is no different from any other city throughout the world but it’s night the streets are crawling with Vampires, Werewolves, Witches and their mortal hunters. They have all been brought here for the same reason, the Penumbra bar. A safe haven for all and a widely accepted neutral ground, it is staffed by members of each faction to appease all, all forms of fighting are banned from within its walls though it is not uncommon for brawls to break out, usually after a few choice words of heritage have been shouted across the bar.

Other Info;
A penumbra is the partially shaded outer region of the shadow cast by an opaque object.

Alcyone sat in silence with her hands over her mouth as she listened to what Malice had to say, her heart beating wildly and her stomach churning in disgust at her coven's secret antics. 'How dare they degrade themselves in such a horrific manner?' she thought to herself, screwing her nose up at the very thought of her loved ones lowering themselves to necromancy. 'They were supposed to represent the light and everything that's good in the world- that's how we gained so much respect; because we were fair and only used light magic.' She knew they had to be stopped.

Lowing her hands from her lips, the blonde witch snapped her green eyes up to meet the emerald ones of the woman in front of her.

"Ok," She sighed, grabbing the vampires hand. "Lets do this." A blue glow pulsed from Alcyone's chest, enveloping the two women in the dazzling light as they disappeared from the small office.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alcyone gasped as she took in a lungful of oxygen, dropping Malice's hand as she braced herself against her knees. "Fuck I hate that," she breathed. "Sorry for the lack of warning, how are you? Are you ok?" Feeling less dizzy, she straightened up and took in their surroundings. "We're about a quarter of a mile away from home, I couldn't get us any closer without being detected. We just have to go across this park and we'll be there. So what's the plan?"

Malice was used to the warm glow of magic but when the spell actually took hold of them and pulled them from their seats it was a totally new sensation, she felt as though she had just been yanked from the world itself the chair beneath her disappearing from under her and being viciously replaced with the hard ground, she had to steady herself quickly to save from falling. “Yes, I can understand why…” Malice growled in answering, taking in her surroundings. They were still within the city limits that much was evident however they were definitely not in the bar anymore, above their heads was a sign she’d seen often in her night time wanderings; Ghost Forge Park.

“So what's the plan?”

“They outnumber us so any kind of frontal attack would end badly for us, what we need is misdirection.” She pulled a small beaten packet of cigarettes from within her jacket and sparked one up, tossing the packet towards Alcyone. “Go in as you would on any other day and go for a wander, find Maccus’ cell and allow yourself to be captured. It is imperative that your coven believe your ignorance and that they think that you have stumbled across his cell by accident. Whilst they are worrying about lying to you I will sneak in behind you and get Maccus out.”

Gesturing up towards the coven’s secret home Malice pointed out one of the downstairs windows. “I will get in through that window, it leads down to the kitchens which usually are warded at night time to stop anyone trying to get brazen whilst the witches sleep however tonight there is some form of gathering going on so the staff are still in there and thanks to their mortal heritage they are hardly going to be getting in the way, nor are your coven going to keep them particularly well-guarded.” Smoke rose steadily from her mouth as she spoke but there was no betrayal of emotion.

“All I need you to do is keep them distracted long enough for me to rescue Maccus, so don’t do anything stupid. No magic duels or anything…” Her cold smile crept across her features. “Not yet anyway.”

Alcyone couldn't help but smirk at Malice's obvious discomfort at her methods of travelling and watched as she tried to figure out where they were. She accepted the packet the vampire offered her and pulled out her lighter from her small bag, sparking the cigarette up as they walked through the park.

Seeing the small hamlet occupied by her coven, she felt a chill wash over her. She couldn't believe how blind she'd been to her own family's secrets and to have such a big one right under her nose... it was a disgrace! If she hadn't been so wrapped up in finding out who killed her father then she would surely have figured out what they were up to much sooner and stopped them.

Then it hit her - so violently it made her stagger backwards as the force of the knowledge struck her very core - it was all a distraction. She finally understood who was responsible for her fathers death... and the answer sickened her.

“All I need you to do is keep them distracted long enough for me to rescue Maccus, so don’t do anything stupid. No magic duels or anything… Not yet anyway.” She looked up at Malice and chuckled darkly. "Oh don't worry, I'll distract them alright."

Alcyone swallowed the white hot rage threatening to boil up inside her and stalked forward towards the collective of cottages. "Meet me back at the gates in about half an hour, ok?" She called behind her.

As she neared the small well in the centre of the cottages, she closed her eyes and muttered a locating spell to find Maccus, following the tugging in her stomach to the small barn where they kept the sacrificial chickens. Placing her hand on the latch, she took a deep breath and opened the door, not prepared for the sight before her. There was a man who appeared to be in his thirties with deep gashes on his chest over his heart stripped of his shirt, secured to the beams with heavy silver chains and a protective circle cast around him, keeping him in place and constant agony. Alcyone gasped and ran to the man, kicking the candles away and scattering the salt drawings with a gust of wind from the palms of her hands.

"What have they done to you?" She whispered, tears welling up in her eyes at the sight of someone being treated in such a way by her own family. Just as she reached out to touch his face, a familiar voice broke the silence.

"Get away from him, darling, he's dangerous!" Alcyone jumped and turned around to face the one woman she most desperately wanted to see tonight. Her eyes flashed as her green eyes met the almost identical ones of her grandmother in front of her.

"Dangerous? How dangerous can he be when he's been completely incapacitated?"

Elizabeth merely smiled at her granddaughter and held out her hand as if she was leading a child. "Come, we will talk inside with some tea. I'll explain the abomination there." Alcyone looked from the small hand to the vampire behind her. Now was her chance to distract everyone whilst Malice snuck in.

As she followed her nan the short distance to her house, she contemplated just how evil the woman in front of her truly was.

"Come on then. Explain why there's a vampire chained up in the barn like a scene out of some cheap horror film! I seriously hope that it isn't what it looked like from what I saw!" She said as they walked into the small kitchen.

Her grandmother's eyes held a slight glint that if Alcyone wasnt paying attention she would have missed. "And what do you think it looked like, love?" Alcyone kept her eyes on her once-beloved nan as she took a breath. "Necromancy." She replied, watching as Elizabeth's face went slightly pallid. "Necromancy? Thats absurd! How could you think we would mess around with that sort or magic... black magic! No, the idea is laughable!" The old woman laughed lightly. Alcyone knew that her nan was lying through her teeth, but as she opened her mouth to retort three more witches from their coven came in through the back door. 'Shit,' she thought, 'there's no way I can carry this on without screwing everything up!"

"Then why was that vampire chained up back there?" She asked, playing into her grandmothers lies.

Elizabeth looked towards the other women and sighed, feigning sadness. "We didn't want to tell you just yet, but that man is the one responsible for your dad's murder. We wanted to make sure it was him before giving you any hope of much deserved revenge."

Alcyone's mind was screaming at Liz's blatent lies and the hairs stood up on the back of her neck as she realised that everyone else was involved too. She had to get out of there before she did anything stupid. "I'm sorry nan, but I have to go. I need to think about what you've just said." As she stood to walk through the back door, she heard shouts in the distance. 'Ah Malice, just in time," she thought. "I'll be back soon," she promised everyone in the room, giving her relative a kiss on the cheek. As she got to the end of the pathway, she heard someone burst into the kitchen.

"Liz, he's escaped! He's gone!"

Alcyone quickly turned on the spot, seeing her old friends and family turn towards her and reach out, before she disappeared in a flash of blue back to The Ghosts Forge Park gates to await Malice and her Sire.

Malice Whateley

“Be ready to run when you do, your coven aren’t going to let him go easily.” Malice answered bowing slightly, watching as the young witch ran off ahead of her. She waited until she had finished her cigarette to move in after Alcyone, it would do her no good to follow the witch in and get captured too. As soon as she saw Alcyone exit from the nearest cottage with another of the witches Malice began to creep towards the building, apparently they weren’t expecting any other visitors tonight.

Malice snuck in through the window, drawing her small pistol as she did so, just in case. The kitchen was empty other than a young cook who had her back to the vampire, she was singing quietly to herself whilst she washed up plates in the sink, evidently oblivious to Malice’s entrance.

Continuing through the house Malice found the door linking the barn to the house and silently pushed the door open. The room was surprisingly well lit for a barn but that was probably for the witches convenience over Maccus’, following the shadows across the room Malice was confronted by the form of Maccus’ tied body, there was blood covering the majority of his extremities but no visible wounds now, good they hadn’t been in recently.

“Maccus?” Malice whispered quietly, testing whether her sire was awake. ‘Nothing, damnit!’ Malice cursed to herself; quickly she began to cut the bonds across his wrists and hefted the old vampire onto her back. It had taken her some time to creep through the house due to the surprisingly old building’s creaky floorboards, the cook was no concern to her but everyone can scream.

Hefting Maccus onto her shoulder Malice headed towards the doorway, being sure to step quietly. Though this was apparently made useless when an ear splitting scream came from behind her, turning angrily she was confronted by the small cook a look of fear and panic across her pale skin. “Please don’t hurt me!” the girl begged shielding her obviously crying face.

“Really?” Malice asked sarcastically, with one eyebrow raised. “You scream really loudly at the person obviously wanting to get away silently and THEN ask them not to hurt you? Urgh. Well I’m busy at the moment so I suppose I won’t.” Turning her back to the now cowering girl Malice half ran out of the building, the witches would know she was here by now and the shouts of anger from one of the other cottages confirmed that fact.

Taking the quickest path she could Malice ran to the gate under which Alcyone was waiting for her arrival. “How was the reunion?” She asked coldly, baiting the fires. “Fruitful I hope?”

Keira stood up and returned to the room to see if Hannah's condition had improved but nothing new had occurred since she had sat outside the apartment. She lifted her grandmother's grimoire and began to read it, awaiting Hannah's condition to improve. She whispered a few of the incantations, one of which caused some small fireworks to fly from her finger tips and another that made flowers grow around her feet. "Sorry." She whispered before just reading her grandmother's stories, one of which involved the other Covens from the UK, Keira read it closely, the main Northern Irish coven had become suspicious of one of the English covens, scared that they had started to dabble in Dark magic. She read further on and began to see increasing reason as the why the coven was suspicious and why even now, the Covens of England and Northern Ireland had a hard time convening together. She put the book back in her bag and went to watch over Hannah, she had a damp towel in her hand and started to dab her warm forehead with the cool towel. She held Hannah's hand, even the ill need comfort. "We'll help you." She whispered to her. "You won't need to worry about the man that hurt you, you're safe with us."

After scanning the table and making sure all the basic preprations were ready John walked over to the front door, opened it, and dragged one of his suitcases in. He opened it up and pulled out a leather bag with a red cross taped on with red tape. He set down on the table surgical equipment such as a scalpel and a suture kit. He looked up to Keira and to the group standing in the other room "I dunno if you wan't to stay to watch the surgery, it'll be a little gruesome. I'll come get you from the hall or wherver you go when we are done in here." John retrieved a small oxygen tank from his suitcase and attached the cord of a mask to it and put the mask over Hanna's face. He handed a pair of gloves to Choi and put some on himself.

He began to give Choi a quick briefing "Just as a quick note if I hadn't said anything before, I believe this girl has internal bleeding, she had been coughing up blood when I first saw her and I was told she was being physically abused. I only have medical knowledge from surviving as long as I have, I really know nothing about performing surgery on the internal body, so that is why I need you to help. Once we find the source of the bleeding I can handle suturing, unless you would feel more comfortable doing it. With all that being said, I am ready to begin operating whenever you are."

Choi was a little nervous about performing an operation for internal injuries while outside of an emergency room. He had hoped that they had the proper tools and equipment needed and that the room was properly sterilized. He was also a bit worried about controlling himself throughout the surgery. He was indeed a new born vampire now, for Choi looking at Hannah right now was difficult like turning down a delicious meal when you’re starving. Not to mention, in a few minutes she would be opened up and operated on, there would be visible blood to entice him. Choi prayed to God that he kept it together.

Choi replied to John, “Well… I would feel better about this had we been treating her in a hospital, the chances for her receiving a bacterial infection in her surgical wounds is greater here. Therefore we must try to sterilize the surrounding space as much as possible.” Choi the paused and took a deep breath, then exhaled slowly. “Secondly, I feel I should warn you. I am a newly turned Vampire, and… I don’t know what I might be driven to do at the sight of her blood once we begin. I don’t want to hurt her or anyone else. However please stop me if I do flip out, but don’t kill me. I know it might sound selfish but I don’t want to die either.” Once that was settled the two began operating.
-Fade to black [for the surgery process]-

Meanwhile one of the humans present, Kyros, stood staring across the room in Ezra’s direction looking quite puzzled. Sasaki had not noticed, but Ezra looked in Kyros’ general direction and caught eyes with Kyros. Ezra quickly felt awkward. He turned back to Sasaki while taking quick glances at the man staring at him. “Why is he staring at me that way?” Ezra had completely forgotten that he was referring to a human that could not see him.

Sasaki smiled and then chuckled, “He’s actually staring at me talking to what appears to be thin air. You’re invisible to him remember. But… I think he can actually hear you, so you might be one step closer to being seen by the living.” Sasaki looked over at Kyros smiling. “You should try talking to him. He might be able to hear you, also it would help me not to look crazy in front of strangers.” Sasaki added with a smirk across his face. He had run into a few ghosts in the past, some were invisible to the living beings around them but others seemed to be able to be seen by the living sometimes, and unable to be seen the next. Sasaki didn’t know why this sort of phenomenon occurred or not but he knew that Ezra had a chance at being seen given the right conditions, whatever they may have been.

Ezra hesitated for a moment. This was the most he’d learned about himself as a ghost since becoming one. He nervously stepped toward Kyros and spoke. “Um… excuse me. Can you see me or hear me? I’m Ezra Underhill, what’s your name?” Ezra felt a little more confident after Sasaki’s encouragement. He somewhat reminded him of his former best friend Darren who’d always encourage Ezra to be brave and try to do things he was too afraid or nervous to do. Darren’s encouragement always made Ezra feel like he could do anything. Ezra missed Darren deeply. Ezra began to feel more comfortable and less anxious. He was fading into visibility to those that were living, Ezra hadn’t noticed but Kyros surely would.

Ezra Underhill, Okada Sasaki, Choi Jin-sang

A short while later, Ezra, Sasaki, and Choi had left the flat where Choi helped Hannah. As promised Sasaki and Choi escorted Ezra to his home. Ezra had one of the best nights of his afterlife. He didn’t really want it to end, but they were nice enough to escort him home and he didn’t want to infringe on the two any further. Ezra opened the door to his flat, his face brightly smiling like a little child. “Thank you both so much for such an exciting evening. I really enjoyed meeting you two. Please don’t forget to call my, well… former publicist and landlord Darren. He’ll set it up so you guys can move right in here!” Ezra could hardly contain his excitement.

Sasaki and Choi smiled as well. Ezra was like a breath of fresh air. He seemed to be a fairly simple and sweet young man. Such genuine innocence was not often found in the world outside of children. “I’d definitely like to thank you Ezra. You made a very difficult evening go smoother. I’d like to call you a friend if you don’t mind.” Choi extended his hand to shake Ezra’s.

“Why of course we can be friends!” Ezra replied as he leapt forward to hug Choi. “why don’t you guys come in and check the place out. See if you actually like it before you call the landlord.” Ezra suggested trying to suppress his outward happiness.

“That’s a good idea. I think we will.” Sasaki replied as he patted Ezra’s shoulder.

The guys looked around and they liked very much what they found. The flat was very neat and spacious. It was quite studiously designed. Everything held a modest feel to it. “This place is perfect for Ezra and it would suite Choi’s tastes just fine as well.” Sasaki thought to himself as he assessed the space. Sasaki turned to Ezra and with a great smile said, “Erza it’s perfect! Since it’s late now I’ll give this Darren a call in the morning. Here’s my mobile number, you can call me anytime.”

Ezra’s smile faded for a brief moment. “Oh, I don’t have a mobile phone, at least not since I died.” Ezra began to perk up again, “You know how it is. You kick the bucket and then everyone starts rummaging through your stuff trying to figure out what to do with it, or who’s gonna benefit off of it” Ezra said with a nervous giggle. Then Ezra pondered aloud for a moment, “But then again I suppose you’ve never had to attend your own funeral because you didn’t really have one… oh bother I’m sorry. I guess you don’t know and now I sound like a total muppet.” Ezra slumped down in his recliner chair.

Sasaki began to laugh full-heartedly. He enjoyed Ezra’s energy it was very disarming. Such energy required on to simply be themselves without regret to produce, and it encouraged others not to put on airs as well. Sasaki, after chuckling, spoke in giggles, “You’re absolutely fine Ezra. Thankfully I’ve never had to have a funeral yet alone watch it. That must have been tough. Well we’ll be in touch, nonetheless.”

“Great! I can’t wait for us all to be flat mates!” Ezra cheered. He could help but think about this as a double blessing. He’d finally be free of daily loneliness and he’d have an excuse to see Darren more often, maybe even talk to him again.

[Sorry for the double posting but I needed to continue on. Digital.ps, Cookieraidereng, i'm not sure if you all are continuing. If so my apologies for writing my characters forward. but I figured I waited a while.]

Alcyone looked up sharply from her post as she heard heavy footsteps coming towards her. She let out a sigh of relief when she saw it was Malice.

“How was the reunion? Fruitful I hope?” Alcyone screwed her nose up at Malice's harsh words. "Fuck off," she spat, colour rising in her cheeks. "She tried spinning me some bullshit story, I went along with it. Simple as."

She still couldn't believe the barefaced lies her grandmother told her so easily.

"And anyway, what was with the screaming girl? So much for stealth, a heard of elephants would have been more subtle than you were!" Alcyone shot at the red-head next to her, eyeing the battered man she had slung over her shoulders with concern. "Either way, it doesn't matter. We need to get back home before anyone else comes looking for us. Brace yourself and make sure you've got hold of him." she said, grabbing Malice's shoulder tightly before disappearing once more in a flash of blue light.

Malice smiled at Alcyone’s response, “You’re so beautiful when you’re angry.” She teased flirtatiously. “The cook saw me as I left, I would’ve killed her earlier but I thought I’d save myself the lecture when I got back.”

She readied herself as Alcyone reached out to grab her arm, the flash of blue light enveloping them quickly before the wood of Alcyone’s office floor reformed under her boots replacing the soft grass. “I will never get used to that.” Malice commented, lowering Maccus’ sleeping body down into a chair, stepping back as Alcyone busied herself with cleaning him up.

“You know chances are the Witches will blame you for Maccus’ departure.” Malice commented, walking across to the other side of the office, reading one of the certificates that littered the walls. “You were there at the right time after all. It might make sense to either go back and continue to feign ignorance or totally come out as opposing them.”

Turning around Malice leant against the wall, her boot resting against the wall. “I personally think it’s high time we had a change of scenery around here and with the Penumbra under your name you’re hardly without supporters.”

“In fact I think it’s high time you made your imperial move. You’ve been craving that kind of power for years anyway.” Malice put a hand into her coat and removed a pack of cigarettes she had taken from the house and sparked one up, tossing one over in Alcyone’s direction.

“And if you don’t make some sort of move then this opportunity would be wasted. It’s not often when you have such a momentous advantage as proof that they are dabbling in forced control of the Vampires.” Smoke rose from Malice’s mouth as she spoke. “It’s time to raise an army, Alcyone.” She smiled sinisterly.

Alcyone gasped as the three of them landed- two people was hard work, let alone an extra person added to that. Standing up straight, she transfigured the chair Malice had placed Maccus on into a table and started gathering various items from around the room.

Placing the herbs on the table next to Maccus, she flicked her hand ridding him of his clothes so she could examine his wounds more clearly. "Shit," she muttered, seeing the massive welts marked on his skin along with the slowly healing hole in his chest. "They've used silver on him, it's gonna take a bit more effort to rid his body of any excess silver but he'll be okay." She said to Malice as she poured vials of herbs and mixtures into a mortar, grinding them up into a paste with her black granite pestle and rubbed them into her patient's injuries.

Ensuring that every cut, stab and graze had a thick coating of medicine, she sat back to wait for the mixture to work its magic, listening to what Malice had to say.

“In fact I think it’s high time you made your imperial move. You’ve been craving that kind of power for years anyway. And if you don’t make some sort of move then this opportunity would be wasted. It’s not often when you have such a momentous advantage as proof that they are dabbling in forced control of the Vampires. It’s time to raise an army, Alcyone.”

"You're right," she said, lighting the cigarette and taking a deep drag. "They're gonna blame me no matter what and shit is definitely gonna hit the fan. But where do we start? It's silly, but I've wanted and planned for this moment for years but never once did I think it would be against my own coven. Sure, I know their weaknesses, but they known mine just as well." Taking another drag, she stared at the woman in front of her. "We need to pool our contacts together. This goes beyond mere power play. You need to contact every vampire you've come across to warn them and offer them an opportunity to set it right. If you don't mind, we can use certain bloodsuckers as bait. We have to plan this to every minute detail. This cannot go wrong or we both risk everything."

Coughing interrupted any further planning as both Alcyone and Malice's attention snapped towards the figure on the bench, watching as he gingerly sat up and looked around in confusion.

The next day Ezra waited around the flat anxiously. He couldn’t wait to hear keys jingling as the landlord opened the door to the flat to showcase the flat to Sasaki and Choi. This would be the beginning of a new life after death. However, most importantly he would be his chance to see Darren again. Since he began “Haunting” the place there had been fewer people coming to see the house, thus Darren’s appearances decreased as well.

Sasaki had given Darren a call. They had set up a viewing of the “vacant” flat for the evening, since unfortunately vampires were unable to go out in the daytime. Darren ended the phone call with a deep sigh. He finally had someone that was willing to rent the flat. Renting the flat was not only a good thing for profit, but more importantly it was an avenue for Darren to move on from the unresolved feelings regarding Ezra’s death.

Within earshot of Darren was Valencia Kendrick , Darren’s girlfriend and fiancé. She overheard a portion of Darren’s conversation and couldn’t help but inquire for specifics. “Darren, love, who were you talking to on your mobile?” She spoke sweetly but not without a hint of ulterior motive. Valencia never did a thing without a purpose.

“It’s Ezra and my old flat, a couple is interested in renting the place, even before the viewing. Isn’t brilliant?” Darren said with a sudden excitement.

Valencia’s disposition only grew further snarkier. “It’s about bloody time.” She said as she stood from her seat at the stylish kitchen table and sauntered over to the tea kettle to pour her-self more hot water. “And look at you… going on about ‘Ezra and Your~ flat~…’ you sound like you two had tossed off and married or something.” Valencia quickly dunked her teabag in and out of her cup impatiently as it brewed.

Darren looked quite dashed and only rolled his eyes at her comments. Valencia continued, “Frankly with the renting of that flat, we can FINALLY put Ezra behind us for Christ’s sake.” With her tea brewed to the extent of her limited patience she took a sip of her tea. “Furthermore, I don’t see why you haven’t bloody just sold the place. It’s not like we need the money anyway.” Valencia nagged.

Darren abruptly cut Valencia off. “OUT of the question! I am NOT, under any circumstances, going to sell that flat! Do you understand me?” Not waiting for an answer Darren recomposed himself and continued. “I will rent it out, not sell it. Some of the best moments of my life happened in THAT flat and I do not intent to let those go. So pleases stop your prattling.” Darren’s voice carried a sharp tone that few would outright challenge.

Valencia swiftly rolled her eyes and folded her arms. “Fine, have it your way love. However, you’d be good to REMEMBER this, memories can be swell but in the end they’re all head bother. Don’t let a guilty conscience shackle you down to those ‘memories’ of yours.” Valencia brought her tea cup down to the counter abruptly and quickly walked out of the room, grabbed her purse and headed out the door.

Darren sat still. He let out a deep sigh and clutched his temple with his fingers in frustration.

The flashes from the cameras went off like mad. Racks of clothing were lined up on the far wall, a small make-up station to the left. The windows were all boarded up so tight that no sunlight could get in. Lights were tilted down, shining the people up under them. The theme of the photo shoot was dark fantasy. A fitting theme considering the young female, who was a real vampire, played a fake vampire.

“Tilt your head slightly up Cosmina.. yes like that!” The photographer said excitedly as he snapped away with his camera. A young male model had his head in her lap while sitting on the backs of his legs, while Cosmina sat on a make shift trunk with a dark forest background. She ran her hand through his hair while looking down at him with thirst in her eyes. Fake blood ran from the two puncture wounds on his neck, his white shirt stained with the rest.

“Now Allan, I want you to sit up and almost bite her neck. Cosmina, look at the camera with an intimate look. Yes! Perfect!” Again, he excitedly snapped away, Cosmina changing poses and expressions every few seconds. It was a good thing that Allan was not a real vampire, like Cosmina. It was a highly intimate act between two Vampires to share their blood between them, an act that she had not done in over a century and a half.

Eyes opened, greeted by a dark room lit only by a few candles. A wooden door was straight ahead from the end of the bed, held up by stone walls that reached high up. Her head pounded, and she couldn’t remember what happened. All she could remember was Maggus with a young farmer boy. She ran, and then he.. bit her. Cosmina’s hands flew to her neck to feel for something, anything, but all she could feel was smooth skin. ‘Did I dream it?’ she thought to herself, unsure of anything she thought. Suddenly, the sounds of nails scratching on stone pierced her ears. Pain shot through every nerve, hands covering her ears in an attempt to drown out the sound. “What is that god awful sound?!” Cosmina cried.

“Those are the rats down the hall. Block it out.” A voice said, soothing hands placing themselves over Cosmina’s. “Concentrate.”

After a few moments of piercing pain, the sound began to fade. Not all the way, but enough to tolerate. “Maggus…” Cosmina whispered. “What did you do to me?” she asked, looking up at him with pain in her eyes. Maggus looked down at her with a loving expression, running a hand through her hair. “I made you young and beautiful forever. I made you what I am. Vampire.”
“What do you mean Vampire?” Cosmina questioned, but got her answer quickly. Sudden thirst hit her, her hands reaching up to her throat. Never had she felt it so dry, so deprived of moisture. The back of her throat itched, the feeling overwhelming.

“Ok! That’s all for today!” the photographer yelled, nodding a thanks to the models. Cosmina stood. “Good work today Allan!” she smiled, making way to the racks of clothing. One attendant unzipped the back of her dress, Cosmina moving behind the changing screen to change out of the clothes, and into her outfit.

Allan had come up, towel in hand as he wiped the fake blood off. “Hey Cosmina.. I was wondering.. would you like to go grab a bite to eat?” He asked, a hint of nervousness in his voice. Cosmina came around from behind the screen, grabbing the lip gloss to touch up her make-up. Luckly for her, she didn’t get any fake blood. “Aw Allan you are sweet.” She said, giving him a quick kiss on the cheek. “Thanks, but I’m not really hungry..” For food anyways. Blood I’ll take though! “Maybe next time ok?” Cosmina didn’t wait for an answer as she dashed out the door. The sun was just beginning to go down, and she couldn’t wait for breakfast.

Malice Whateley & Maccus Dudwine

Malice only half listened to Alcyone’s report on Maccus’ wounds, her mind flitting back to her own experimentation in the more recent years of her life. “I’m glad you agree.” She answered as Alcyone’s change of subject brought her back to the matter at hand. “The vampires won’t stand against something like this and even the dogs would be less than impressed so really all you have to do is go downstairs and call war against the witches, with Maccus’ testimony to support your claims you would easily be able to bring hell to their gates.”

Malice took another slow drag of her cigarette, clearly enjoying the promise of chaos. “Or we can always make it small; forcibly remove the coven through murder and assassination. Either way we are literally standing on a goldmine of forces.”

A cough broke Malice train of thought bringing her attention over to her adoptive sire.

A gradual wash of relief was beginning to take hold over Maccus’ body, the searing pain he had been experiencing since his capture at the hands of the coven slowly starting to wane as his vampiric abilities began to kick in and heal over the sores. “Urgh.” He managed to groan as he sat up, his surroundings starting to filter in, the style he recognised as being one of a witch and the small motifs signified that it was still of the Pendle Coven but this was definitely a different building to the one that Maccus had seen.

Slowly he turned to see his captors though this was where the similarities ended, the witch he had never seen before but she didn’t bare the markings of one about to practice necromancy nor did her accomplice, in fact her accomplice looked as much vampire as he did.

“I know that face.” He whispered, turning his legs and pulling himself to his feet, gingerly he took steps towards the sinister woman who made no move towards him but she didn’t seem to push him away either. “Engelieth?” he spoke calmly, moving his hand up to touch her face. “Is it really you?”

Malice inched backwards moving away from his hand. “It isn’t anymore. It’s Malice now.” Her cold voice seemed to visibly sting her sire as Malice took another drag of her cigarette.

“I have searched for you for almost half a millennia, Engelieth!” Maccus spoke again, ignoring Malice’s new name. “What happened to you?”

“Projekt Bosheit.” She growled coldly the German words rolling off her tongue with ease as she turned her back and walked towards the door her heavy boots thudding against the wooden floors. She stopped at the door and turned back towards the young witch whom was now stood with her mouth agape. “Look for a vampire named Sasaki he will be able to extend our contacts.” With that Malice turned her back once again and disappeared through the doorway.

Darren had his appointment with the two possible tenants for the empty flat he was renting out. He made his way early and stood outside the building waiting for Sasaki and Choi to arrive. He was curious about the two opting to view the place at night. While Darren waited outside, Ezra watched him from the above window. He smiled uncontrollably at the sight of Darren. He was so happy to see him.

Sasaki and Choi arrived at Ezra’s flat and greeted Darren as he waited for them outside the building. “Hello, I’m Okada Sasaki, and this is Jin-sang Choi. We’re here for the viewing.” Sasaki introduced the two.

Darren smiled and shook their hands as he greeted them. “Hi there, I’m Darren Gottschalk. It’s a pleasure to meet you. Shall we have a look, ya?”

“Sure.” Choi replied. The group went into the building and into the Flat.

“It has a really nice view and it’s pre-decorated. “ Darren said as he unlocked the door and stepped in after opening it up. To Darren the flat was empty of anyone else but himself, Sasaki and Choi. However Ezra was there standing right next to him. Ezra smiled and waved at Sasaki and Choi, who had to act as if he weren’t there.

“I love the décor. The view is beautiful. I wouldn’t want to change a single thing here.” Choi said pleasantly.

Sasaki watched as Ezra stared at Darren with a somber look of intense longing. It was the first time he’d seen anything other than a smile or look of excitement on Ezra’s face. There was much more to Ezra and Darren’s past relationship than Ezra had mentioned. “How did Ezra die exactly? He’s too young to have died of natural causes, maybe he was sick and passed away. Or perhaps he had an accident or even worse murdered.” He wondered silently.

Darren, in response to Choi’s comments on the décor of the flat, answered Choi, “I’m glad you like it. The previous co-owner of the flat loved that view. He said it inspired him to write and create. But it never did me any good, for me it simply a pretty view. Maybe you two will have better luck than me.” Darren said with a chuckle.

Sasaki then focused his attention to Darren rather abruptly, “Was the former co-owner a writer or an artist? What happened to him, if you don’t mind me asking.” Sasaki was a cunning man and he knew this was his chance to piece things together. Ezra suddenly looked startled. He wasn’t expecting Sasaki to investigate as he did. Ezra was simply nervous to talk about his past and his death. But he was more nervous to hear what Darren’s response would be. What would Darren say about him?

“Oh, um yes he was a writer. He wrote mystery novels. His name was Ezra Unherhill, have you heard of him?” Darren replied in a rather delayed manner. He looked a little deep in thought suddenly.

“The name is vaguely familiar but even here in the UK I tend to read Japanese novels still. His name ‘was’ Ezra Underhill?” Sasaki inquired further with a rising intonation.

“Um, Yes Ezra died, over a year ago.” Darren seemed to stare off into space as he replied.

“Oh dear, I’m so sorry to hear that. I hope I didn’t bring up a sore subject!” Sasaki was very curious to scope out Darren’s reaction to Ezra’s passing.

“No no, it’s alright. He was my friend. Honestly he was my best friend. He was always more successful than me. I looked up to him for his ambition. It’s a shame his life ended so prematurely… Sorry, I should stop prattling on! Please pardon me!” Darren seemed a tad jarred by the subject of Ezra. Sasaki wondered what puzzle pieces were missing still. Ezra’s eyes looked teary. Choi looked concerned for Ezra.

Choi decided to change the subject and announce that they would rent the place. “Well, I like this place and if it reflects Mr. Underhill’s sensibilities then I’m sure I’d like him too.” Choi said with a gentle smile.

Darren replied, “Great! I’ll get the paper work out of my car. Please wait a moment, I’ll be right back. Sorry for the inconvenience!” with that he rushed out of the flat and down the stairs.

Sasaki turned to Ezra and apologized, “I’m sorry for prying. I just wanted a few answers from an outside source. I wanted to figure him out a little. I didn’t mean to cause you any harm.”

“It’s alright. I know you were looking out for me. I just wasn’t ready to hear the words ‘Ezra’s Dead’ come from him… It just feels so, final. You know, I died in an accident in a church. I was there to pray after an argument with someone… I can’t quite remember. However I was kneeling at the alter to pray and the next thing I knew a statuette had fallen from a ledge and struck me on the head. They said I bleed to death before the ambulance could make it in time. That’s how I died. Sounds pretty silly right?” Ezra began to sob and the electricity flickered a bit in the flat.

“No no no… not silly at all.” Sasaki replied and hugged the ghost tightly to him. It had been so long since he’d received a hug. Sasaki’s embrace was very nice. Ezra felt his sadness simply blow away like leaves in the wind.

Malice Whateley

Malice stormed through the streets, the familiar cynical anger burning inside of her. The desire to cause anguish in the life of another was already consuming her and she was actively scoping out for someone to destroy. After walking several streets Malice eventually came across someone else, a girl in her early twenties by the appearance of things and gathering by her dress she was obviously one of the cities many prostitutes.

Smiling coldly to herself Malice approached the girl, it appeared she was alone but it wouldn’t have mattered either way, it wasn’t the girl she wanted. No, that was far too simple. Getting closer over the prostitutes dead eyes fell upon her. “Hey honey looking for a good time?” she asked, through a husky voice.

“No love, I want to talk to your boss.” Malice answered her bloodlust already beginning to rise.

“He’s not around baby but I could do more than any man to satisfy you.” The whore reiterated taking a step closer to the pale vampire.

“Perhaps eventually you could prove your ability to me however for now. I’d like to speak to your boss.” Malice answered again, taking a cigarette from your jacket, her ears already pricking up at the sound of an engine coming from down the street as it slowly made its way towards the two women.

“Yo bitch, I think you should move the fuck on.” Came a voice from somewhere behind her, the press of a gun against her lower back.

“Oh?” Malice asked turning and bending over to look in through the pimp’s window. “Why don’t you ask me nicely?” She baited eagerly. The man didn’t take long to oblige getting out of his car in a sign of bravado and waving his pistol around even more in his act. It was all quite sweet really.

“Do you want me to fucking shoot you bitch?” The pimp asked again now pointing his gun at Malice’s chest.

“If it will make you feel better about yourself then by all means.” She smiled sarcastically at him, the loud bang ringing out in the deserted street as Malice felt the familiar stab of bullets in her chest. “Really is that it, Two shots?” she asked her eyes turning blue in her bloodlust as she bared her fangs at the pimp before taking her own guns from behind her coat and repeatedly shooting the man against his car.

Waiting until she had fired around four rounds, Malice drove herself against the man biting into his neck and drinking deep, ignoring the screams behind her from the prostitute.

Given some moments Malice relinquished her fangs from the pimp’s neck and let her head fall back, relishing in the fresh blood. Smiling at his lifeless corpse she put her hand in his coat and withdrew a pack of cigarettes and a heavily loaded wallet before letting him drop in a heap on the floor. Turning herself back to the prostitute Malice withdrew several notes from the contents of the wallet and tossed them in the direction of the whore. “Clean yourself up and with any luck we’ll meet again. Malice smiled lustfully as her eyes gradually returned to their emerald green

The girl grabbed rabidly at the money nodding subserviently to Malice a whimper still on her voice as she ran from the scene, leaving behind several of her items in the process even going so far as to drop her shoes in an alleyway in her desperate attempt to get as far away from the vampire as possible.

Malice couldn’t help but smile, tonight was turning out to be even more fun then she could ever have imagined, already she’d murdered some delinquent pimp, emotionally scarred a whore and now she’d even picked up enough cash to see her by for a few months. Turning on her heels she began to walk back down the street, her anger subsided and her lust for anguish temporarily quelled her next order of business was to return to the matter at hand.

She continued for several more streets eventually arriving at the richer part of the city where the lights were still on all year round and the people never seemed to sleep. She didn’t generally care much for the various activities that the majority of them got up to but it was always a good place to start when looking for vampires.

Leaning herself up against a building Malice waited in anticipation of finding either someone she knew already or failing that any greater source of amusement, eventually a recognisable face rounded the same corner, long blonde hair with a dress surprisingly common in the heavily club populated area of the city. “Cosmina. Still pandering to the mortal requirement to look at pictures I see.” Malice smiled as the younger vampire approached her.
