Far in the future, humanity expanded across the stars. Using sub-lightspeed travel was expensive, but the only solution to the rising population. However, the exodus from Earth proved to be a large failure, resulting in the death of most of the pioneers of space. As humanity recovered from this loss, they shunned the possibility of space travel. With technology rapidly approaching the advent of faster-than-light travel, humanity once more looks towards the stars for their future, beginning a tentative new space age.

On Earth, things are fairly prosperous. The massive loss of population from the first space exodus curbed the rampant use of natural resources, but growing populations are starting to tax them again, pushing humanity back towards the stars. Overpopulation is becoming a problem, and the poor usually live in dense, crowded slums. Most of the countries of the world are now developed, but the balance of power is still held by a few large nations.

In this setting, money is power. Many nations are now ruled by "benevolent" corporation-governments, dedicated to making money. These tend to be the most oppressive of governments, more concerned with profits than the welfare of their citizens. While governments independent of corporations do exist, they are often heavily influenced by the corporations that hold sway in their territories. And while these governments are certainly powerful, they are quite few.

This setting is a futuristic one, featuring advanced technology. In this setting, humans are the most common people, but with genetic modification and advanced technologies available, some other races can be played. Creativity with your characters is encouraged!
