Introduction
The withered door creaked on it's ancient hinges as it swung open, revealing a bedraggled figure, clad in ragged clothing and sporting a grin and laughing in a show of mirth unheard of in this establishment. The tavern keeper looked up Quickly from the crate he was unpacking, half expecting to see an armed madman standing in his lobby. Instead, he found the laughter came from Barry Holst, a local drunk with a terrible gambling addiction. "Gods damn you Barry!" The tavern keeper yelled across across the room, "What in Werdds' name is wrong with you?".
Barry walked into the raggedy tavern, "Something happened."
"What happened?"
"Something folks have been telling me wouldn't happen."
"Got a wife?" A heckler chirped in from the table nearest to the door.
Barry scowled at the man before continuing, "Won me a chest I did!"
"Chest of what? Moonshine?"
"Shut yer trap!"
"Barry." The Tavern Keeper spoke up again, "What was in the chest?"
"One'undred 'n seven silver coins"
The tavern went silent, those previously ignoring now stared intently at Barry.
"One hundred and seven silver pieces?"
Barry grinned from ear to ear, "Aye."
"Ya bloody idiot! Why in Werdds' name would you announce that! You know the people 'round these parts! Thieves, burglars, pickpockets! Ya don't just announce a sudden increase in wealth like ya just got married!"
Barry stood dumbfounded for a moment. "Bu-"
"Just go, take you and your chest outa here before ya lo-"
A sudden rumbling accompanied by a high pitched scream wracked the tavern, shattering jars and other ceramics. Everyone in the tavern recoiled in pain as the unearthly howl forced it it's way into their heads and formed the words: "Hunger, hunger, the king of Mecrundyr, hungers for blood he does! Put him under, the king of Mecrundyr. A shade of what he was."
Then the screaming stopped as soon as it began, leaving everyone blank, frightened and confused.
-----------------------------------------------------
Civil War has broken out in the feudal kingdom of Mecrundyr! A disembodied voice, crying for the death of the current king has divided the already unstable nation. On one end, there are the revolutionaries. Men and women of all walks of life driven into rebellion. Many believe the disembodied cry was from a god or gods, and that is whatever deities will that the king must be dethroned. Many others are those who've dreamed of dethroning the king, but haven't had the opportunity to do so. On the other hand there are the loyalists, while many may not serve directly under the king, they think him a just ruler and the voice was just voice was just a ruse set up by a fowl demon or foreign sorcerer to drive Mecrundyr to war and weaken it for an easy invasion. There are of course, those who want to stay neutral and live their life as normal as possible, but they would be wrong in thinking they could avoid the war or it's effects forever.
Information:
The Kingdom, Mecrundyr:
Mecrundyr is not foreign to warfare. It has seen at least one great war every century, usually with one it's hostile neighbors. It is a kingdom built from suffering, throughout the countryside lay abandoned villages and forts, wiped out by one of the various pandemics that hits Mecrundyr every couple of decades or so. The towns that are inhabited are dilapidated, poor and are otherwise festering holes. The Kingdom's capital is New Hamel, A huge walled town with shanties built around it, housing most of the population. The old capital, Old Hamel, remains the largest city in both population and vastness. Alas, both these centres are plagued by poverty and crime, not to mention plagues.
Other states of note:
Golbi: Golbi lies directly south of Mecrundyr. A fertile country, Golbi is much more prosperous than it's northern neighbor. It's wealth has been a curse as well as a blessing though, as it attracts invaders and thieves from all the known world. Golbi is currently in a shaky truce with Mecrundyr.
Jarland, the Northern Waste: Jarland isn't a real kingdom, but more a collaboration of tribes and exiled criminals north of Mecrundyr's border. Individually, the tribes and bands pose little threat to Mecrundyr as a whole. There is a rumor though, that a great warlord is attempting to unite the tribes. But Rumors are rumors.
Biristrad, the Dead Empire: On the border of Golbi and Mecrundyr, lies a great gate, the only route through the Maystead Mountain range to the dead empire of Biristrad. One the greatest state in all of Mearne, The Biristrad Empire fell to the hands of their own black technology and magics. That's at least what the legends say. Whatever caused it's fall, it left it a lifeless husk of land, transforming those who travel there into inhuman creatures.
Peoples and Races of Mecrundyr
Humans: The dominant race of Mecrundyr and it's neighbors, humans are everything we know them to be.
Hillfolk: Also known as dwarfs, brownies, gnomes and stouts. The Hillfolk are a short race (Avg. HT. 3' - 4.5') with stocky builds and long arms. They are mostly found along the Maystead Mountains. There are some more adventurous ones that travel to human lands, where they are welcomed because it's believed they bring good luck.
Giants: The once-mighty giants are perhaps both the most pitied and hated race in all of Mecrundyr. They Once ruled a significant portion of Mecrundyr, before being driven out by the much more numerous human race. After that they were hunted for sport and trophy by young noblemen until they were nearly extinct. Now, the giants move in small bands, trying to hide from human eyes. Some violent or vengeful individuals raid outlying villages, digging their race's grave ever deeper.
Plagueborn: The plagueborn are the few survivors of one of the many plagues that wrack the kingdom. While they don't have any abilities a normal specimen of their species wouldn't possess, they are regarded as a deities chosen and expected to lead people in times of crisis. The only discernible feature of the plagueborn is the hideous scaring all across their bodies.
The Warped: A rare race indeed. The warped are those who have foolishly traveled to the Dead Empire Of Biristrad and have been warped by the dark energies within. Those individuals often look nothing like their original race and may have been warped in to almost any creature imaginable, or unimaginable.
Character Creation:
Name: Should be Obvious
Race: Please note that due to "The Warped's" ambiguity and rareness only the most well thought out and creative will be accepted.
Age: Humans live to only about 50 on average and Hillfolk fair no better. Giants can live up to 150, but rarely do. Warped have varying lifespans.
Gender: Male or Female.
Physical Description: Should be mostly written, Include height, weight and the like. Picture optional.
Personality: While I believe a character's personality is better displayed in game then written right away, a short breakdown is nice.
History: How are you the way you are. Should include how you have any companions / troops.
Equipment: Stuff of note.
Influence: What is this? Look down.
Companions / Troops: If you have only a couple companions, please name them and give them there own short description/equipment (Ex. Bob Bobby, Human farmer.... Armed with stick...). If you have 5 or more, give them a (or multiple) troop name/s and equipment (Ex. Footman, short-sword, wooden shield.....)
Influence:
Influence is how much people will follow your character on a scale of 0-10.
0 = 0 (None) Example: An Infamous / disgraced warrior, The village Idiot.
1 = 1-4 (Buds) Example: Peasant and friends
2 = 5-10 (Posse) Example: Popular noble and friends, Small bandit band
3 = 11-30 (Crew) Example: Bandit band, Small mob
4 = 31-75 (Mob) Example: Mob, Large bandit band
5 = 76-150 (Band) Example: Tiny army, Large mob
6 = 151-500 (Force) Example: Small army
7 = 501-1000 (Army) Example: Army
8 = 1001-2000 (Legion) Example: Allied armies
9 = 2001-5000 (Great Host) Example: All the armies
10 = 5001 - Infinite (Countless) Example: Divine army
Notes:
*Just because you can lead 1000 men, doesn't mean you can supply 1000 men.
*Because you can lead 1000 men does not mean you can start out with 1000 men.
*Getting an influence above 4 requires very good reasoning, getting 8 or higher requires ridiculously good reasoning.
*Giants have a max influence of 4, getting a influence of 4 requires good reasoning.
*Your influence can change through RP events, such as winning or losing a major battle.
How the Game Works
King of Mecrundyr is a largely turned based affair. Every cycle (turn) you decide what to do with your forces, such as march them, put them to work, prepare for battle ext... There is no limit of actions you can make during a cycle, as long as they can be done in a one week period. After a cycle is complete, a progress report is given. A progress report contains all the consequences for whatever actions you decided take during the cycle and other current events that may effect you. Character conversations and dialogue are done through the interactions thread, combat is done through the combat thread. Secret meetings and interactions can be held through PM's, though I must be PM'd what happened afterwards.
For a better idea how this system works, check out this role-play. King of Mecrundyr isn't on the same scale, but you should get the idea.
