When popped, it leaves all in sniffing vicinity unconscious for one round (roughly 2 minutes). Yeah, it smells that bad. It's the gas from your nightmares, the putrid cloud of doom that has your nostrils shriveling at it's very approach. It isn't very large, and can spawn almost anywhere at any time, usually when you least expect it.
