Miette couldn't believe her ears. The teachers were allowing them to fight? Without another word, Miette put her books down and joined Freya's side. She may be a pride magic, but she would rather fight with Freya than with Jamie.
"I'm with you all the way, Freya," she heard herself say, holding up her hand. Her symbol - a silver crown circling a black heart - glowed dimly, a sign her confidence was low.
"Miss Mignonette, you stay out of this," the principal told her. "You don't want your parents getting upset."
Miette sighed and retreated to the principal's side. She couldn't do much of anything for fear of upsetting Lord and Lady Mignonette. Don't get into fights at school, Miette; it's bad for our reputation. Don't mingle with Mixed Bloods or New Magics; it's bad for our reputation. Don't wear the commoner clothes; it's bad for our reputation. For once, Miette wanted to do something fun rather than worry about the stupid Mignonette reputation. She was just too timid to rebel, though.
"Lady Mignonette's too good to battle!" a boy shouted from Jamie's side of the fight. "She doesn't want to ruin her precious dress robes!" The pride magics on Jamie's side started to laugh.
She held back the tears starting to form and kept her head held high, with her chin up. Miette may have seemed snobbish at times like this, but it made her seem less vulnerable.
