Introduction

Image
3rd September 1939, 11:15am
"This morning the British Ambassador in Berlin handed the German Government a final Note stating that, unless we heard from them by 11 o'clock that they were prepared at once to withdraw their troops from Poland, a state of war would exist between us.

I have to tell you now that no such undertaking has been received, and that consequently this country is at war with Germany."

You can imagine what a bitter blow it is to me that all my long struggle to win
peace has failed. Yet I cannot believe that there is anything more or anything
different that I could have done and that would have been more successful.

Up to the very last it would have been quite possible to have arranged a peaceful
and honourable settlement between Germany and Poland, but Hitler would not have it.
He had evidently made up his mind to attack Poland whatever happened, and
although He now says he put forward reasonable proposals which were rejected by
the Poles, that is not a true statement. The proposals were never shown to the
Poles, nor to us, and, although they were announced in a German broadcast on
Thursday night, Hitler did not wait to hear comments on them, but ordered his
troops to cross the Polish frontier. His action shows convincingly that there is
no chance of expecting that this man will ever give up his practice of using force
to gain his will. He can only be stopped by force.

We and France are today, in fulfilment of our obligations, going to the aid of
Poland, who is so bravely resisting this wicked and unprovoked attack on her
people. We have a clear conscience. We have done all that any country could do to
establish peace. The situation in which no word given by Germany's ruler could be
trusted and no people or country could feel themselves safe has become intolerable.
And now that we have resolved to finish it, I know that you will all play your part
with calmness and courage.

At such a moment as this the assurances of support that we have received from the
Empire are a source of profound encouragement to us.

The Government have made plans under which it will be possible to carry on the
work of the nation in the days of stress and strain that may be ahead. But these
plans need your help. You may be taking your part in the fighting services or as
a volunteer in one of the branches of Civil Defence. If so you will report for
duty in accordance with the instructions you have received. You may be engaged in
work essential to the prosecution of war for the maintenance of the life of the
people - in factories, in transport, in public utility concerns, or in the supply
of other necessaries of life. If so, it is of vital importance that you should
carry on with your jobs.

Now may God bless you all. May He defend the right. It is the evil things that we
shall be fighting against - brute force, bad faith, injustice, oppression and
persecution - and against them I am certain that the right will prevail."

Sunday 3rd 1939

For Vivian Sullivan, that Sunday had begun like any other, she had risen early to attend a church service, before coming home to cook breakfast for her husband and best friends 'The Richards' a little Sunday tradition they had fallen into, after church Clive and Sabrina would come back to theirs where they would have breakfast, bacon, eggs, sausages, toast, it had become one of her favourite days, besides from their nights out or in; Vivian definitely felt lucky to have such a wonderful family, she hoped nothing would spoil it.

Standing there in her kitchen, a smile plastered across her pretty face as she washed the dishes, humming along with the light tune coming from the radio, she had just finished the plates, when the sound of her music stopping, glancing towards the radio the blonde raised an eyebrow; the commentators voice came over the airwaves saying they had a special bulletin from the Prime Minister. Sparking her interest, Viv dried her hands before turning the radio up and listened carefully as Chamberlain began to speak...
"This morning the British Ambassador in Berlin handed the German Government a final Note stating that, unless we heard from them by 11 o'clock that they were prepared at once to withdraw their troops from Poland, a state of war would exist between us..."

Hearing those words, Vivian's hand flew to her mouth, eyes wide with shock as she glanced towards her clock, 11.15am, they were at war, with Germany, no this couldn't be happening again, the last war was suppose to be the war that ended all wars. Remembering her husband and friends in the lounge, she hurried out of the kitchen "Nate" she called out.

Clive had been having a good day, it was Sunday for starters and that meant the shop was closed; it was his day off to spend as he pleased with his beautiful wife and of course Nate and Viv. Thanks to yet another wonderful breakfast, courtesy of Mrs Sullivan, Clive sat back on their sofa stomach full, stifling a yawn, he could have done with going back to bed, even on his day of he had to get up early and head to church, but knowing that wouldn't suffice with Sabrina or Vivian for that matter. Turning his head towards Sabrina, he offered her a smile "So, what shall we do today?" He asked, pulling a cigarette case out from his pocket, offering them a to first Sabrina and then Nate before taking one for himself, striking a match to light up.

Smiling as he indulged, Clive grasped Sabrina's when he heard Vivian call out Nate's name, the panic in her voice worrying him slightly "you okay Viv?" He asked as she hurried into the room.

"You won't believe it" she gasped walking into the room, heading straight to the radio. Confused by her disposition, he shared a look with his wife until Chamberlains voice filled the room, immediately, Clive sat up straight, resting his arms on his knees as he listened to the Prime Minsters speech.

" I have to tell you now that no such undertaking has been received, and that consequently this country is at war with Germany."

You can imagine what a bitter blow it is to me that all my long struggle to win
peace has failed. Yet I cannot believe that there is anything more or anything
different that I could have done and that would have been more successful.

The last words left Clive feeling numb, reaching out he grabbed his wife's hand as Vivian sat on the arm of Nate's, he could see the tears in her eyes "it's unbelievable" came her soft voice as she placed a kiss on Nate's head.

Grabbing his own wife's hand, Clive placed a lingering kiss on it, if only it was unbelievable, he had thought that the situation in Europe would lead to war and voiced his opinions with Nate often but never in front of their wives as they didn't want to worry them, now however they probably should have done to save them from surprise.

Sabrina always loved Sundays she could be herself, spend time with her friends and with her love, which was just about all she ever wanted to do. She gently leaned on her husband should yawning gently in her soft yellow babydoll style dress as Clive and Nat talk a bit of business, she didn’t mind what they talked about as long as she go to be with her husband. She heard Vivien’s frantic calls from the kitchen and the three of them went quickly to aid her. Sabrina heart almost stopped when she heard the Prime Ministers voice and the things he was saying in his speech. She clung to Clive as they listened in.

Nate wasn’t exactly happy about the things that were being said but he kept calm and knew better then to lose his cool, there was nothing they could do so what there was no point in getting upset. When the broadcast was over he didn’t speak immediately he was more worried about comforting his wife. He wrapped his arms around her in a gentle hug like he always did, placing the softest loving kiss on her neck. “Unbelievable, yes it is my dear, but it is something that is unavoidable at this point.” He said softly trying to sooth he worry.

Feeling her husbands arms wrap around her, Vivian felt immediately comforted “Unbelievable, yes it is my dear, but it is something that is unavoidable at this point.” listening to his words, the way his voice remained even, holding no sign of fear or nerves, he was remarkable, she knew it was for her own sake but still she was thankful, if he lost it then she sure would too.

Clive felt Sabrina clinging to his arm as a wave of love washed over her, turning towards his wife, he placed a kiss on her cheek, how was he suppose to leave this woman behind? How would he tell her he would volunteer? Maybe she already knew, deep down she had too know, he couldn't stay, he would not be called a coward. Nate would go, that he knew for sure, he had told him often enough with their talks "well...I'm sure it will be over by christmas" he spoke trying to ease the ladies minds.

Standing up Vivian shook her head "that's what they said the last time" she explained, smoothing out the none existent creases in her dress "Brina, help me with the tea?" The blonde asked her friend before leaving the room in a hurry and back to the kitchen as she tried to keep her tears at bay.

Clive winced at Vivs words, she was right, he remembered his father speaking those very words, only he was not to come back at all, he would hate to put Sabrina through what his mother went through, however he had to serve his country. Once the women left the room her turned to Nate "so when will you sign up?"

Nate knew his calming tone would relax his wife, he was fighting back his emotions, more than anything he didn’t want to have to leave his life behind, he didn’t want to have to leave his wife all alone, with him at war he couldn’t be here to protect her. He knew to that this would break her heart and he really didn’t want to have to do that to his wife, but he really had no choice a man who didn’t go to war and fight for his country wasn’t a man at all. “When will you sign up?” he heard his friend’s voice and it brought him from his thoughts. He pulled a cigar from the inside of his suite jacket offering one to Clive before lighting his own and taking a few slow drawn out puffs from the cigar. “The sooner the better.” He stated as if they were simply talking about taking their wives to dinner, but this wasn’t that simple. “We should sign up together, but I can’t tell Viv until after I sign up or she will do everything in her power to ensure I don’t sign up.” He let out a small chuckle at the thought of the lengths his wife would go to make sure he stayed by her side.

Sabrina took a deep breath as she followed after her friend to get the tea she was trying her hardest not to think about everything, it was all happening so fast and then in a rush it hit her. Her face grew hot and her head grew heavy. “I need to sit.” She said softly as she entered the kitchen, she looked as though she might pass out. She sat down and closed her eyes for a moment trying to calm her emotions. It seemed like forever before she spoke. “He’s going to leave.” She finally said venerability present in her voice as tears slipped from her eyes. “He’s too prideful to stay, I’m going to lose him.” She said more so talking to herself but she was saying it loud enough for Vivien to hear. Usually she could keep her emotions under control, she always wore a smile even when her and Clive had small arguments, but she just couldn’t hold back what she was feeling now.

“The sooner the better" Came Nate's reply to which Clive could only nod as he rubbed his hands together, he was right, the sooner the better otherwise he was afraid he wouldn't do it at all, not that he was a coward but he was afraid that Sabrina's pleas to make him stay would guilt him. “We should sign up together, but I can’t tell Viv until after I sign up or she will do everything in her power to ensure I don’t sign up.” Clive nodded in agreement, releasing his own little chuckle, it was true their wives had a way of getting what they wanted. "How about we sign up tomorrow at lunch then tell them together over dinner?" He suggested.

Vivian walked into the kitchen, immediately lighting the stove for the kettle to boil, hearing Sabrina's footsteps, she turned her head offering the brunette a small smile as she sat down at the small table in the corner, filling a glass with water she handed it over to her friend, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder in comfort " He’s going to leave" Sabrina almost sobbed. Vivian nodded " "I know darling, you know they are both to proud men, they will go and we will stay here but don't say they won't come back, we can't think negatively , it will kill us" she stated, kneeling In front of her friend, a small smile gracing her lips.
