It is the year 2170, it has been 90 years since humans have first set foot on Mars and it has been 55 years since the establishment of colony 1. Today there are a total of eleven colonies with a total of 1.4 million inhabitants. As the annual Mars colonization celebrations near, the colonies often communicate with each other for the celebration preparations. But in Colony 5, the third largest colony at 175,000 inhabitants, the signal was cut off. After multiple attempts of reconnecting, the leaders of the colony gave up and decided to search the root of the problem. Soon they found it. Not only was the communication system damaged but it was completely destroyed without any evidence, trace or footage of who or what destroyed it.
After assessing the situation, it was estimated that it would take three weeks to build a new one, three days to get a temporary one from Colony two or four months to get a completely new one from earth. Since a sand storm between Colony two and five had formed it would take at least a week to get a new system and another two to three days to get it installed. Isolated, everything goes on as normal in Colony five, but soon people become aware that something is horribly wrong: The lead technician was found brutally murdered and disfigured beyond recognition.

Something or somebody is out to kill people and it must be stopped. As the investigation starts another body is found but not identified yet. The leading investigators think that either an insane person, a cyborg or a robot that has become self-aware is behind it. With almost no clues, the investigation goes on.

Robots: Robots are common in colonies, but they are made for simpler tasks such as cleaning or transporting freight. There are very few of them that show dynamic thinking and most AI that possess intelligence similar to humans have no body nor control over devices.

Cyborgs: Cyborgs are people with cybernetic enhancements. They range from medically aided cyborgs with cybernetic prosthetic limbs to workers with full cybernetic bodies. There are very few cyborgs in the colonies and most only have a single cybernetic limb.

Humans: Humans are found everywhere in the colonies and are the most populous among the animate beings here. They control the colonies and many of them are scientists and specialists.


Technology: Most weapons are conventional ballistic weapons and the only energy weapons are in no way lethal and are used as stun guns. Due to particular regulations lethal weapons are rare and only used as a last resort. Lasers are used in the mining sector. They cannot be use as weapons due to a security mechanism and no one has ever had the intention or reason to look for a way around the security mechanism.
Many vehicles use repulsive engines (hover cars) while freight vehicles rather use rail or tracks. Although most vehicles are powered by solar energy or electricity, some use an oxygen fusion reactor that either uses oxygen directly or separates carbon from oxygen in carbon-dioxide. Many scientists see this as a technology to reverse the problems on Earth and contribute to terraforming on Mars to soon make its surface habitable.
AI are advanced though there is no history of self-conscious AI.
