a character in “Heroes and Villains: A New Threat”, as played by LSunday

Description

Name: Warren Hartgrave
Known Aliases: Joshua Hendrix, Carson Beckett, Vince Drummer, Graham Anderson, Harry Lewis, Kyle Fisher, Thomas Young, Frank Wright, Brandon Francis
Public Name: The Dreammaster
Age: 18
Gender: Male
Appearance:Image
Hero/Villain Outfit: None- He uses his powers to alter how people see him, so no one can recognize him.
Villain or Hero: Whichever is more fun at the moment. (Neutral)
Power 1: His main power is to generate a dream world around his target. He has full control over this world, and while 'instant' deaths will not cause any lasting effects on the real world, slow deaths can cause minor brain damage and, occasionally, put a character in a coma. When someone is killed instantly, they will wake up from the dream with minor disorientation. He can only maintain one dream at a time, and the more people he places in the dream, the more he has to concentrate. He cannot function in everyday life if he is maintaining a dream of over two people, as the effort it takes the maintain the dream makes it so he cannot devote any attention to the real world. If he tries to place too many people in a dream, his brain won't even be able to concentrate on making him breathe and he will pass out and the dream will end.
Power 2: Memory theft- as a variation on the dream power, he can use the memories of a person to construct a dream that includes information Warren would not already know. If he wishes to keep any of this information once the dream ends, however, he must enter the dream himself and learn or read about it.
Power 3: Warren can alter the way people perceive objects in the real world, but he can only make minor changes. The shape, weight, and dimensions will stay the same, but things like lettering, colors, and similar pieces can be altered. He uses this to rearrange his facial features and hair color/style so that he cannot be recognized, and very few people have actually seen his born face. He usually changes his face day-to-day, and can be hard to recognize each morning to those who do not know him well.
Lair/home: A small apartment in the city.
Affiliates: His landlord, Jason Thorne, is under his thumb due to his sleepwalking disorder. Otherwise, he keeps to himself.

Personality

Warren keeps to himself. He will use his powers for personal gain, but rarely causes any harm or even does any 'major' events. He doesn't have a job, instead getting food by placing the cashiers at stores in minor dreams so they perceive him paying and give it to him for free. He usually spends his time at home in self-induced dreams which he plays like video games. Sometimes, when he is bored, he'll stay up at night and alter his neighbor's dreams. He rarely goes out of his apartment, but once the NCCPD asked for superhero help, he started paying attention to what was happening in the city and will often interfere in the heroes' and villains' plans. Sometimes, he'll toss other super-powered people into dreams together and pit them against one another. However, he does have a moral system and will never bring real harm to a person if he can hep it.

Equipment

When Warren is using his powers, he operates under the following limitations:

1 person: Can operate normally, no extreme activity. Absolute control of dream.
2 people: Can operate, but will seem distracted. Absolute control of dream.
3-6 people: Still aware of surroundings, but cannot move. Still capable of speech. Absolute control of dream.
6-10 people: Can hear surroundings, but cannot speak or see. Can't manipulate large inanimate objects (buildings, etc.)
10-13 people: Completely unaware of surroundings. Can't manipulate anything he couldn't carry in real life.
13+:Unable to maintain lungs, will pass out after the maximum amount of time he can hold his breath. (1.5 minutes) Dream will falter, and the dreamees will have minor control over the reality.

History

Warren ran away from home when he was 15, and has since used his dream abilities to freeload off of the people around him. He had trouble with people around him learning of his deceptions, and is known to a few police departments, but he has become adept at staying off the record. For a while, he had to move around every few weeks, until he found a landlord, Jason Thorne, who sleepwalks. Ever since then, he has been able to use his powers to make Thorne do anything he wants. Ever since then, he has been living in the same building, using Thorne to get food and general products.

He still does practice dreams when he can- he will often place 13 people in a dream as practice to try to expands the size of a dream he can create. This method is how honed his abilities from when he originally discovered his powers, when he could only place two people in a dream at a time, and even then only with cosiderable effort.

So begins...

"Yeah, that was kind of the point. I didn't want anyone who could accidentally lauch missiles," he said, following her up to the generator and the small computer that stood in front of it. He started to reach into her head, hoping he'd be able to fill in enough of the blanks on how a generator worked to convince her.

As his probe went through a second world, one that mapped out her inner brain, he was surprised to find that there didn't seem to be any knowledge on missiles or generators at all. He couldn't even find any information on how her gun worked. The probe worked its way through the inner circuits of her mind; it appeared to be laid out like a massive circuit board, but not quite. It reminded Warren of when he was a kid, looking at a circuit board and imagining it was a city. There were people, bustling everywhere. Warren's probe ignored them, searching everywhere for some idea of how to trick her.

Suddenly, his probe found something. There was a generator, that seemed to be hooked up to power lines that spread all over the Circuit City. He smiled, thinking of it like that. Still; he didn't understand what it was supposed to be. He'd seen a lot of people's inner brain maps. Some were Roman cities, some looked like an elvan forest; he'd even seen a perfect model of the Starship Enterprise once. But this place didn't make any sense to him. Still, it was a generator, and he pulled his probe out of her mind and used the extra energy to expand the dream warehouse to include the hallway and main room, while slowly making changes to the workings of the generator to ensure that it seemed like a legitimate piece of equipment, and not just set dressing.

"Now, can we please just return to the main room and... wait for the others?" he said.

"What is?" Warren asked, leaning over the computer towards her. He needed to know what was wrong with it, so he could make sure that the computer stayed consistent with what they already knew. In the real world, he began to drag her body out into the hallway; he needed to wake her up as far away from the computer as he could.

"I think it's about... 7? 7:30?" he said, looking down at his watch only to realize he hadn't check the time when he came in, so he couldn't trust it. He quickly put his hands behind his back and looked at the screen. She seemed to be reading through a ton of logs, with different times registered. There were only two times registered for that day; Sometime around 1:00, and again about four hours later. "Why, what is this?"

"I really don't know what you're talking about," Warren said, looking right back at her. "I'm not exactly an expert on backup generators. Are you?" He glared right back at her. They seemed to be at an impasse. She didn't have anything concrete; he was flat-out lying and wasn't going to tell her squat. At least he had the upper hand; she had no way of establishing anything new while in his dream, and without any assistance she had no way of getting out of it. "How about, you start explaining what you think is going on, and we can fix it together."

Warren smiled a little, as Zoey broke first. Not that what she was saying was making any sense. She was offering a trade, though... but he still had a chance to take the upper hand. As he talked to her in the dream, his real world self turned around and started to drag Zoey back into the computer room. Once there, he asked, "Computer, who is this woman and what, if she has one, is her power?"

Meanwhile, his dream counterpart was listing things that weren't lies. "My name is Warren Hartgrave, I live on 62nd Street, house number 14 apartment 5C, and I recently got mixed up with a bunch of other supers protecting a missile. There is a war going on outside, I have the power to put people into dreams, and I have a crazy stalker old friend who may or may not want to kill me named Sarah Gorman," he said. As the real-world computer started to list things to him, though, he smiled and said, "But why don't we talk about you for a second. Your name is Zoey Saitou, and you are gifted with the ability of super-intelligence. You are currently employed as a weapons specialist at the U.N.E., and I really don't think there's much more I could want, is there?" He smiled, knowing there was no way for her to get out of this one. He took her body and dragged it back into the hallway, setting up a seamless dream transition. In the dream, he added a crack to the floor in the hallway, just where he was standing in the real world. He'd make sure she tripped on it in the dream, catch her, and in the sudden confusion he'd make the switch. As long as she didn't guess she was in a dream, she'd probably assume the dizziness from exiting the dream came from the fall.

Warren jumped after her, hoping he could time his setup right. Just as she walked to her position in the real world, Warren lifted the cracked floor and watched her fall, running and catching her in a way to make sure that the dream world matched the real world as much as possible. The second he felt her in his arms, he ended the dream and let her return to the real world. "Careful, now," he said smugly.

Warren watched her take a few hesitant steps towards the main chamber, thinking he'd won, when she suddenly flipped around and bolted for the computer room. "Zoey, no!" he shouted, reaching to grab her, but it was too late. He ran after her, stopping in the door frame to see he was too late. She was already looking at the computer, running her fingers over the screen. She complimented him on his effort, but... he'd still lost. He sighed, and very slowly moved away from the door and walked up behind her. "Nice juke, by the way," He muttered, still annoyed at himself for falling for it.

"Command Invalid: User Not Registered. Voice Recognized: Saitou, Zoey. Would you like to register?"

Warren cut in, "Zoey, please. You don't have to do this. We were handling it fine on our own." A total lie, but still, "Maybe it's for the better if you don't get involved..."

User Saitou, Zoey registered. Awaiting User input.

Warren sighed and moved back, sitting against the wall. "Look, we were doing a perfectly fine job of keeping this place safe. The only reason you got this far is that damn genius power of yours. I was able to keep you off of it, on my own, for the better part of a day." Warren realized that was actually incredibly unimpressive, but he continued on, "There are three other people to help me, and we're probably going to avoid any tentacle-monster battles in the middle of a PR speech. We don't need you."

My function is to store data, moniter military activity, and catalog known activity of supers. My primary objective, however, is to monitor the nuclear weapon found inside this facility. My objective is to ensure that the missile found in this facility is not launched. If the missile is launched, my objective is to alter its target co-ordinates to a predetermined location. What else would you like to know?

Warren spoke to her, "We are not running away from the problem. You're right, we don't have guards. The more people who know about this place, the more people there are that can betray us. If you recall, the only reason you didn't walk in to an empty warehouse devoid of people was because John's tentacle creature threatening all our lives. If I had been left to keep you dreaming in peace, you would have come in, found an abandoned warehouse empty of equipment, and been on your merry little way. In fact, it's thanks to me you know about this place at all. I could have just let the creature eat you... or whatever."

Warren watched Rylie walk in with the others, and a strange man he hadn't seen before. "Computer, suspend all function!" The computer stopped before it finished answering Zoey's question. He turned to the new man, staring at him while he spoke to Rylie, "So, we're letting everyone and their mother know about this place now?" Warren said, looking the new guy up and down. "Who's he?"

Warren watched Rylie and Zoey glared at each other, fighting over how much they could trust him. Warren looked carefully at the man; he certainly didn't look like a Tanai. He looked German, or Italian, and he spoke with an Irish accent. Zoey was probably right about his name. "Why don't we figure this out for ourselves? Computer, what is the name and recent movements of this man here?" Warren asked, staring straight at the man. "What are his recent alignments?"

Warren smiled with satisfaction as his hunch was confirmed by the computer. He watched the others argue over the computer, trying to decide responsibility. Finally, Zoey spoke up again. Warren chimed in, "Well, actually, Zoey, you're not exactly-" her glare cut him off, and he continued caustiously, "free of the... desire to see... the computer... shut down." He smiled awkwardly, trying to cut through her glare.

Warren watched Zoey and Daniel go at each other, flinging threats back and forth. He was inclined to side with Zoey at this point; the slowly deepening shadows behind him didn't put him at ease. At first, he thought he was just seeing things, but as the conversation went on he became more and more sure that they were moving on their own. He backed away from the wall, moving closer to Zoey and Rylie. He wanted to be close to the girls with guns. At this point, he could at least trust them to keep him alive long enough to put someone to sleep.

Suddenly, Daniel said something that made him feel like he should chime in, "Uh, actually, neither Adana nor I have any weapon on us at all..." he said, picking up the conversation as Zoey moved to check in. "And, on the topic of weapons, does anyone else see that stuff on the wall?" He worried that Sarah might have followed them somehow, and was preparing to do... something from the wall behind Daniel. Watcher entered, tossing him a radio and beckoning for him to follow, but Warren wasn't moving anywhere until the wall had been explained.

The man didn't seem to have noticed. "Behind you," Warren said, indicating a large blotch of darkness that was congregated behind Daniel. "It's been growing for a few minutes now. I... I think it's better if you back away..." Warren turned and whispered in Zoey's ear, making sure no one else could hear, "Do you happen to have a knife on you? I think she might have followed us somehow."

Warren took the knife, but he was a little more at ease now that the wall had returned to normal. Sarah's return had set him on edge, and there was no ambiguity about trusting her; if she found this place, they were in for a heap of trouble. He took the knife and stuck it in his back pocket. He nodded to the rest, and moved to pick up the stuff Watcher, or Wade, or whatever, had dropped. "Look, I'm going to go see what he wants," he said, holding up the radio. "I'm going to reinstate the door, uh..." he looked at the newcomer, "thing. Just be aware."

Warren walked up to the roof to see Wade pointing a sniper down at the street. "Woah, woah!" he said, getting down and running over to him, "Do you WANT to draw attention to this place?"

"Look, if you start shooting people, they're going to tell others that there's something here. The three most powerful militaries on the planet are looking for this place. If we start shooting at random civilians from the roof, questions are going to be asked." He sighed, then sat down next to Wade. "I'm going to put an illusion up to cover the door, similar to the one I had before. As long as there's no distractions-" Warren punctuated this by reaching out and nudging the gun down, "I'll be able to keep it up without anyone noticing something's wrong. But for that to work," Warren stood up again, "It needs to stay quiet." He started to head downstairs, "Besides, it's getting late. After today, I'm sure a lot of us need sleep. We can cover the door in shifts."

Warren followed Watcher's instructions and looked down at the street, scanning back and forth for anything to indicate someone was coming to the warehouse. It was getting dark, and Warren was starting to get exhausted. It was hard to believe that when he'd woken up this morning, he'd still had a bullet in him. He rubbed his shoulder where it had hit him, still astounded at the effectiveness of superpowered healing. He sighed, and spoke to the man next to him.

"Thank you, by the way, for shutting down the computer," he said, "I don't know what would have happened if that information was left out for everyone to access."

Warren looked at Zoey's offer. They were some kind of pills; he took the bottle. "What are they?" he asked, reading the side for some kind of explanation.

Warren immediately handed the pills back to Zoey as if they were toxic. He chuckled nervously, "Yeah, I don't trust the interatction of anti-sleep and dream powers... Besides, your track record isn't the best with this stuff, if I remember correctly."
