A scientist aboard the Pioneer IV, Cale is extremely dedicated to the Pioneer Program. He spends most of his time studying and doesn't like to socialize.
Rarely is Cale seen doing anything but studying. Ever since he was accepted into the Pioneer Program, Cale has expressed interest in nothing else. Cale has never liked to socialize, and his studies serve also as an escape from having to talk to others. In the event that someone does get a chance to speak to him, he answers in short, brusque sentences, watching the person with cold eyes all the while. Cale's attitude toward the other members of the program is due to a superiority complex and a lot of cynicism; he believes that all of the kids on the ship are immature and that they don't understand or care about the importance of the program. Cale Townsend believes that he is one of the only youths cut out for the job, and he makes this belief very clear.
Cale has all the textbooks and materials from the lab of the Pioneer IV at his disposal. This includes vials, a heating apparatus, thermometers, scales, measuring devices, and much more.
Cale grew up in a fairly small town in Minnesota, where the environment was not in as bad a condition as in the big cities. But pollution in the air and water affected people everywhere. When Cale was four, his mother was pregnant with another child, but just before the end of her first trimester, she miscarried. The doctors told her that environmental factors had led to the unborn baby's death - most likely pollution in the air. Cale has vaguely remembers his mother crying herself to sleep for months, and while the memories faded, the incident subconsciously plagues him to this day. Because of it, he developed an intense interest in the environment, which led to his passion for science as a whole. He always worked hard in school, and at fourteen years of age, he was a sophomore in high school before he was accepted into the Pioneer Program.
