Calliope

Muse of Epic Poetry: "This poem would be better with aliens."

0 · 1,521 views · located in Purgatory.

a character in “Purgatory Remix”, as played by LovelyLisey

Description

Age: 4,172 years old

Backstage Pass: Is a muse.

Calliope is short and tiny. She has big brown eyes, and she would have long curly black hair, except that she cropped her hair and dyed it blue. Why? Because. She has a penchant for Gothic Lolita dresses because it makes her look cool, and because people are going to assume she's an evil little girl anyway. She has a tattoo of a fox on her upper arm, which she usually hides because otherwise people will try to make drug deals and/or arrest her.

Personality

Calliope is, actually, pretty normal. She tends to be on the quiet side, as she prefers to let other people dominate the conversation. However, she is not unfriendly, as it's hard to go over four thousand years without developing some social skills. She will go to any extreme to protect people that she cares about. Calliope is pretty nice, and she's even kind of wise. But she has a weakness.

Some people are addicted to drinking. Some people are addicted to gambling.

Calliope is addicted to adventure.

If given a choice, she will follow the path of most resistance. She will always follow the rabbit down the hole. If something exciting is happening in Purgatory, Calliope wants to be at the center of it. Fortunately, Calliope's definition of 'exciting' has gotten lax over the years, as alien invasions are a dime a dozen and there's always some bandit stealing pretty maidens away. However, if anything does capture Calliope's attention, she tends to become quite unlike herself. She will risk everything, just to see the adventure through.

History

Calliope is the muse of epic poetry, which means that her hobby is to go into the human world and inspire people to write poetry that is really freaking epic.

Most of the time, she runs Calliope's Tavern in Grand City.

If you want to know her full backstory, just go read up on Greek Mythology. It was pretty much like that. Except probably weirder. Because the truth is always weirder.

Recently, Calliope's adventures have consisted of her brief alliance with The Fox. When the angels abandoned Grand City for Heaven, Calliope hung out with The Fox because he seemed to be the only person trying to do something, although she was not sure what. Then she realized that he was, like, evil and stuff, so she turned tail and joined the Bureau instead. Of course, she soon became bored with the Bureau, and she went back to her tavern. The Bureau still sometimes calls on her for detective work, although she hasn't been very helpful recently. However, the new 'soul murders' have piqued her interest...

Calliope has heightened reflexes and strength as the result of being an immortal creature. She also can fight pretty well with a sword. People often critique her for being cliche for using a sword, but her defense has always been, "Hey! Beowulf taught me!"

So begins...

"I meant alcohol," said Calliope, a little taken aback by Olivia shouting. She peered curiously at the vial. She was not that familiar with this strange little girl with a dark penchant for tying people up...would the concoction be safe? Well, the only way to find out was to let Olivia try it.

Calliope was not sure if Olivia was asking her, but she decided to chime in anyway. "Might as well give it a taste," she said to Olivia, nodding.

Calliope disappeared into her room behind the bar. She reappeared with a camcorder. "Okay. Ready to film duet."

She had, of course, stowed her sword back under the bar, as it was just silly to hold a camcorder and a sword at the same time.

"How about 'In the Arms of the Angels'," suggested Calliope, somehow without sarcasm. "That would be cute."

[Mailman] Now that Angel's Party was over, the streets were quieter. Desolate, even. The mailman appreciated the quiet, but it also meant less prey. As he walked down the street, the small music box in his pocket for comfort. He could feel the warmth of the souls contained wherein. As long as he had the music box, he was invincible. As long as he had the music box, he could pass judgment, just like the pretty angel had said.

[Mailman] A strange man nearly ran into him. The mailman realized that he hadn't been paying much attention - that was bad. He needed to attract as little attention as possible, not nearly run into people. As he passed the polite man, the music box's tune began to sing in his ear. He was the only one that could hear its song, as he was chosen. That only happened when the music box found a soul that it liked. It wanted the polite man - there was something about that soul that interested the music box. I am your arm, thought the mailman. I will do your will. As he turned to follow the polite man, the music box suddenly hit a bad note. The mailman instantly understood, without words. One of its brothers was nearby. Another music box - but who had it? The mailman looked frantically up and down the street, seeing only a gray man puking his guts out beside a dumpster.

[Mailman] The three of them were the only ones on the street. One of them had to have the mailbox. The mailman decided that he would take both their souls, quickly, before someone came. He approached the puking man under the guise of helping him out, placing a comforting hand on his shoulder. "Sir...?"

[Mailman] "That's -!" The mailman stepped back, clutching at his own music box. "You -!" The drunk man had taken out his music box, which surely meant that he was about to attack. The mailman took out his own music box, opening it to reveal a strange glow, like the faraway light at the end of a tunnel...the music box began to suck up the drunk man's soul, and the mailman's ears became full of the saddest song he had ever heard. And from far away, he thought he he heard...poetry...sad, sad poetry...the saddest thing he'd ever encountered in a life where he routinely killed people...finally, the mailman couldn't take it any more. He shut the music box, and since the box hadn't finished, all of the drunk poet's soul returned to its body. "What the hell are you?!" screamed the mailman.

[Mailman] The mailman was not a very finicky guy, but he still didn't appreciate the vomit. Neither did his music box, which was playing very loud, very angry music in his ears. The mailman looked up with some anxiety at the other man on the street, who had witnessed the encounter. He would have to silence him by stealing his soul, and afterwards he would kill the sad drunk man the old-fashioned way, which involved a lot of kicking and punching and smashing heads against walls (the sad drunk man was a witness as well, after all.) "Come here," said the mailman to the polite man he'd nearly bumped into earlier. He prayed the man would fall for his act. "Something is wrong with this man - can you please help me? We must get him to a doctor."

[Mailman] What was going on? The dark-haired man had just gone still in the street, staring at him, as if he did not understand his words or something. And now, something strange erupted from that box...as the mailman stared, the drunk man stood and punched him square in the jaw. This sent the mailman to ground, dropping the box, which made an unpleasant crack sort of sound. "N-no..." said the mailman, reaching for his broken box. He could hear the souls screaming inside, in pain. "M-my beautiful...no, no..."

[Mailman] "You...bastards!" There were tears in his eyes. "Y-you...you did this! I will never forgive you! I will, I will..." The mailman never finished his threat, instead looking forlornly at his broken box. He could barely hear the box's song now. He scooped up the box, got to his feet, and began to back away. He would retreat for now, find a way to fix the box, and then he would definitely have his revenge on this horrible man with the sad, sad soul who had thrown up on him, punched him, and broken his box, pretty much all in the span of two minutes. "I will make you pay!" screamed the mailman as he ran away, cradling his box. ((Gonna have Calliope step out in my next go.))

Calliope sat at a table in her bar, looking out the window. Fortunately, or perhaps unfortunately for the adventure-addled Calliope, she was looking out the wrong side of the building, away from all the music box and murdering excitement. Her curiousity became piqued as black rain began to fall from the sky. As a supernatural creature, she could feel that something had changed in the city. Something magical, and something bad. How exciting. ((If one of the characters could grab the broken music box and bring it in with them?))

Calliope looked up, not able to hide her shock and excitement behind a stoic and apathetic demeanor. "You what?!"she shrieked, flying over from her table to the bar. "What are you talking about? You found him? What happened? Did he try to steal your soul? Did you fight him off dashingly? How was he stealing souls? Tell me everything."

"A favor? I don't suppose letting you stay in my tavern and showing you around purgatory and helping with your poems counts as a favor, then. Fair enough. I will hear your favor." She turned towards Alekz. "It sounds as if you killed this man. Do I hear correctly? What manner of man was he?" A music box? Never heard of a music box that does that. Although, the Fox did mention something like that...does he have something to do with this? What's going on?" It irked her to think that perhaps Fox was pulling her chain somewhere in this, having a good laugh at silly old Calliope and her thirst for adventure.

"I see." Calliope thought the action was hasty, herself - why not capture him and force him to explain how the music box magical device worked? Still, it was probably good that a killer was off the streets, she guessed. "There was a bounty for him at the Bureau. If you want, I can help you collect it."

Calliope stood in front of the door to her tavern, looking up and down the street. Black rain was still falling, creating black puddles that collected near the curbs. Calliope kept the broken music box in her hand. She could feel a magical aura around it, and her instincts told her that it was related to the black rain, although she was not sure exactly how yet. Things had gotten even more mysterious in purgatory...

"Oh, hello Olivia!" Calliope looked down at the box. "This is a music box that JJJ - that poet I'm looking after - and some other guy, I missed his name, well, they found it last night. You know how I was looking for a guy that was stealing souls? Apparently he tried to steal their souls, but they stopped him and killed him. And they got this." She held up the music box. "This is somehow related to the soul thefts and the black rain, but I'm not quite sure how..."
