Description
Age: 4,172 years old
Backstage Pass: Is a muse.
Calliope is short and tiny. She has big brown eyes, and she would have long curly black hair, except that she cropped her hair and dyed it blue. Why? Because. She has a penchant for Gothic Lolita dresses because it makes her look cool, and because people are going to assume she's an evil little girl anyway. She has a tattoo of a fox on her upper arm, which she usually hides because otherwise people will try to make drug deals and/or arrest her.
Personality
Calliope is, actually, pretty normal. She tends to be on the quiet side, as she prefers to let other people dominate the conversation. However, she is not unfriendly, as it's hard to go over four thousand years without developing some social skills. She will go to any extreme to protect people that she cares about. Calliope is pretty nice, and she's even kind of wise. But she has a weakness.
Some people are addicted to drinking. Some people are addicted to gambling.
Calliope is addicted to adventure.
If given a choice, she will follow the path of most resistance. She will always follow the rabbit down the hole. If something exciting is happening in Purgatory, Calliope wants to be at the center of it. Fortunately, Calliope's definition of 'exciting' has gotten lax over the years, as alien invasions are a dime a dozen and there's always some bandit stealing pretty maidens away. However, if anything does capture Calliope's attention, she tends to become quite unlike herself. She will risk everything, just to see the adventure through.
History
Calliope is the muse of epic poetry, which means that her hobby is to go into the human world and inspire people to write poetry that is really freaking epic.
Most of the time, she runs Calliope's Tavern in Grand City.
If you want to know her full backstory, just go read up on Greek Mythology. It was pretty much like that. Except probably weirder. Because the truth is always weirder.
Recently, Calliope's adventures have consisted of her brief alliance with The Fox. When the angels abandoned Grand City for Heaven, Calliope hung out with The Fox because he seemed to be the only person trying to do something, although she was not sure what. Then she realized that he was, like, evil and stuff, so she turned tail and joined the Bureau instead. Of course, she soon became bored with the Bureau, and she went back to her tavern. The Bureau still sometimes calls on her for detective work, although she hasn't been very helpful recently. However, the new 'soul murders' have piqued her interest...
Calliope has heightened reflexes and strength as the result of being an immortal creature. She also can fight pretty well with a sword. People often critique her for being cliche for using a sword, but her defense has always been, "Hey! Beowulf taught me!"
So begins...
((Ahhhh why did she do that, is it really bad or just a little nick?))
Calliope was good at many things, but reassuring depressed teenage girls was not one of them. "Wait for your father's signal. Purgatory may grow on you." She opened her letter, which informed her that another soul murder had been committed. That made fifteen known murders. And not of an inkling of a clue to who was behind it. "I need to investigate all the butlers," said Calliope aloud.
"Because the butler always did it," said Calliope, as if it were obvious. "You should be careful, Olivia. There have been a lot of murders lately. More than normal."
"I know. It's so exciting, isn't it? Haven't had a good murder mystery in a while."
If Olivia was being sarcastic, it flew right over Calliope's head. "I know, right? I haven't had to live in fear for a long time...Definitely tell me if you see anything strange, Olivia. I am investigating this."
Calliope raised an eyebrow. She thought Olivia had said that she didn't know magic, but this sounded like a magic spell. And Calliope was always in the mood for a good magic spell. She put down the envelope and stepped around the bar, watching Olivia.
"Wow!" Calliope crossed her arms. "We won't need to go to the market - you have a pretty nifty sword, after all." She inspected the sword, and found herself infused with the same sense of awe that she had felt when Olvia had recreated a part of Atlantis in the tavern. "That's perfect. Do you want to learn to sword fight with that?"
"Okay," said Calliope, fetching her own sword from the bar. She didn't have a particular name for this sword, as she had so many swords that it would be difficult for her to remember them all. "We can practice here." There were a few people drinking and chatting throughout the bar, but they probably wouldn't mind a sword fight. Calliope had watched her customers during a laser fight: they had calmly put on helmets, finished their drinks, and left. "Let's see. Have you had any experience with swords in the past?"
"Hmmm..." Calliope pondered her sword for a moment, before looking back up and charging all of a sudden at Olivia, sword drawn. Calliope did not actually plan to hit Olivia with her sword, but she wanted to see what Olivia's current level of reaction speed and instincts looked like.
Calliope stopped with the sword an inch away from Olivia's head, or at least where Olivia's head would have been if she were not currently kneeling on the ground. "Oh, dear," said Calliope. This is going to be a steeper learning curve than I thought. "Sorry for frightening you, Olivia. Just wanted to test your sense of adventure."
"Ian," said Calliope, finding herself wishing for a moment that she was teaching this Ian rather Olivia. "No worries. It just means that you will have to grow. It's always the timid people who win in the best stories." She stepped back. "Okay, Olivia. I want you to come at me. Really come at me. Like I'm the bad person who threw you down the portal."
((Okay! Have a good night!))
((Also, Olivia is adorable.))
Calliope sat behind the bar, idly strumming an electric guitar. Someone had left it behind at the tavern, and a bored Calliope had figured it was a better time than experimenting with explosives. The bar was packed, but Calliope ignored everyone who came up to ask for a drink. Calliope was also a terrible guitar player, but fortunately the bar was too loud for anyone to hear.
Calliope looked up as Floressa charged into her tavern, guns ablazing. She recognized the woman as an occasional patron, not particularly memorable, although pretty rowdy. Calliope was not sure what she talking about about now, and she resented Floressa interrupting her electric guitar practice. She held up a hand. "I'm here," said Calliope. "Do you want a drink? Because I'm not serving right now."
"Who's Pyroclastic Flo Blackenshield?" asked Calliope, staring into the barrel of the gun. Calliope recognized Florissa, but that didn't mean that she knew her by name. The tavern denizens had returned to their conversation and their drinks, being very used to random gunfire. "You are pointing a gun in my face," said Calliope, in a tone that was meant to suggest that she did not it when people pointed a gun in her face. "You don't look like the type of person who would own a business," she added. Calliope was not trying to be insulting, but she was often oblivious to the effect that her observations would have on other people.
*that she did not like it
Calliope strung her guitar hard, and the resulting screech caused several tavern goers to turn around for a moment. She had done it simply because the moment needed it. Calliope wasn't sure what this was all about, but there did seem to be some kind of dramatic reveal or realization going on. "Edward Racket." She screwed up her face in concentration. "I think he's...tried to kill me a few times? Oh, yeah!" Her face lit up. "He has! Ah, that's where Kit's gone. Now I remember. Edward Racket is a fun story." She looked back at Flo. "Minion to the Fox, correct? Edward Racket is one of those silver-tongued villains. He likes to manipulate people." She strung her guitar again, and cocked her head at Flo. "You look sort of easy to manipulate. Maybe that's why." Again, bluntness, but no implied offense. In Calliope's world, at least.
((Wow, four people in the chat. Exciting!))
