Physical Profile
Age: 57
Height: 155cm (5' 1")
Weight: 47kg (103lb)
Ethnicity: Chinese
Physical Description: Shin is small and slender but nonetheless well-toned and flexible, the result of life-long martial art training. A life of luxury in the Core means she looks younger than her years, except for a thick streak of grey in the dark brown hair she invariably wears tied in a low bun. She wears long, flowing robes. Her generally stern appearance is offset by the elaborate earrings she likes to wear.

Psychological Profile
Personality:
Shin is reserved, traditional and polite, often at odds with the rough-and-ready manners of the rest of the crew. She prefers to eat alone, and never ventures into the engine room or ship's hold if she can help it. Nonetheless, despite her upper-class upbringing, she is a great believer in meritocracy; someone's worth is in how well they do their job, not how clean their hands are.

Background
Biography: Born 2460, Silver Fern, Ariel, to the Bai military dynasty, Xinxin fulfilled the role set out for her by her domineering family by marrying a rapidly rising Alliance officer, Liu Shouyi, first son of another military dynasty. She promptly provided him with a twin son and daughter, to the delight of both strictly traditional families, but then shocked everyone by returning to MedAcad and finishing her medical training, leaving the twins primarily in the care of an army of servants. Through talent, hard work and the support of Shouyi - who stood by her despite both dynasties' objections - within a decade Xinxin had been accepted onto the teaching staff of Shinei University.
Xinxin and Shouyi were a distant but committed presence in Ziyi and Zuolin's lives, and were proud when both entered the military academy. However, when the Unification War broke out, Zuolin joined the Browncoats, pitching him against his father and sister. Xinxin resisted pressure to join the Alliance military medical staff, refusing to take sides between her children. Matters came to a head at the Battle of Du-Khang, where Shouyi, now an Alliance general, delayed launching his full strength against a beleagured Browncoat position, giving the Browncoats, Zoulin amongst them, time to escape.
Military police arrested Shouyi a month after the Battle of Serenity Valley for his failures at Du-Khang; the arresting officer was Captain Liu Ziyi. Already under suspicion for refusing to join the war effort and for her son's rebellion, Xinxin did not wait for the inevitable but instead fled, first to Silver Fern and then to the Rim, where she joined the crew of the Fairstar. With her husband jailed in disgrace, her daughter turned against her and her son missing in action since Serenity Valley, they are her family now. And by knowing what to look for, and occasionally calling in a favour or two, she has amassed an impressive sick bay on Fairstar.
