ROLE
Apprentice Defender of northern Caledonia, future Knight of the Round Table
HISTORY
Mordred was born into a large family in the north; he was never told who his real mother was, but he was raised with his cousin Gawain as a foster child for Gawain's parents. They moved around quite a bit during his youth, but following Gawain's acceptance as a Caledonian Defender, they were accepted into the Canmore clan's realm of protection, which entitled them to a permanent residence near a castle. Mordred helped with the farms there the last few years, but spent much of his free time under the tutelage of retired Defenders, learning to read and write, to use a sword, and the moral code of the Knight in their land. Despite his somewhat advanced skill (picking up on lessons in the last few years that took the other Defenders-in-training their whole lives to be drilled into them), Mordred has gotten into many fights, a result of his short temper and his youthful ignorance. Following Gawain's duel with the Irish Knight Bertolos O'Desser, Mordred got into a fight with a young lad named Melwas that escalated into a show of arms. Mordred quickly felled the young Melwas with a thrust into his bowels, and an hour after Mordred fled the scene, Melwas died of his wound after attempting to crawl to aid. Gawain, informed that Mordred was the last one seen with Melwas before he disappeared, has decided to take Mordred under his wing and give him personal tutelage while they wait out the storm that seeks the justice that demands Mordred's head.
PERSONALITY
Mordred is an angry young man, angry at the fact that his father was killed long ago and that his mother was not good enough at her job to keep him with her. He was raised, however, to establish loyalty to his family, although he often thinks outside of what is good for his clan and imagines what could be great for himself or the empire. Mordred was taught at a late age to try and accept chivalry as the needle on his moral compass, but often denies it in exchange for ideas of glory; he considers himself to be vain, perhaps too vain, but it hasn't let him down so far. In fact, his vain perception of things seems to keep him more or less on his feet, as he wouldn't want to pursue something if he didn't think himself worthy of the challenge. He can easily say, however, that he lets things get to him; when one ridicules him, or he is challenged with accusations or negativity, he meets it immediately with force, distrust, and aggression. He wants something; he feels like there's something waiting for him in the world, and this journey with his cousin is the exact opportunity to begin seizing it.
