Affliction: Collarbound

Birthplace: Sozo
Nationality: Pakecha
Current Residence: Terra

Personality

Cold, curt, and calculating, Duke is not the most social of men, nor is he the kindest of them. It is difficult to read his eyes, as they stay as frigid as an icy wasteland, and his mouth, just as silent. It takes patience to be with this man for that reason, and one cannot begin to mention his constant, brooding temper.

So begins...

"Aren?" Duke asked, grasping the second beer in his hand and making circles on the glass with his thumb. Mighty strange beings. Must be something like a selkie or some kind of nymph. Like all of the merchild kind. If he noticed her sadness, he certainly did not show it. Duke was a cold, somewhat unfeeling sort. He wasn't very into consoling.

"You should have starved your parents and fed them yourself. Might have made life easier." Not. Might have complicated things depending on their social...behaviors. That was a good way to put it, yeah. He would stick with that. "But I suppose it is too late to do anything. Oh, don't be put off by my harsh words. I'm just a grump, really." And for good reason.

"Doesn't that sound familiar?" he said, half to himself, half to Averna. Harsh words were something he heard on a daily basis. Not always directed at himself, though that was common enough. More so when Luli was directing him to pulverize or kill some pitiful soul that happened to piss her off somehow.
Hm. Harsh words.

"How are you different from them?"

"Whatever floats your boat, darlin'," said Duke, taking a mouthful of beer and swallowing it down. His voice became took on somewhat of a bad western accent. What a narrow-minded people they must be. She was just...tall. Not like she had a big growth coming out of her eye or something.

Looking to Averna, Duke nodded, then shrugged his shoulders. "Well, it's not my place to pry. We all have her secrets." he said, about to take one last sip of his beer...

That is, before the black line on his neck tightened, choking him. He grabbed onto the side of the bar corner, eyes widening. He gagged, gasped for air, then...

Then looked up to Averna, shaking his head. "So sorry, I must go." he said suddenly, turning to make a hasty leave.

Inside Gambits came a rough man. He was muscular, very much so, and it showed even though he wore a heavy trench coat over his rather normal clothing. Below his shirt was kevlar. Upon his neck, seen right below the neckline of his coat, was a dark brown stripe, lining right on the skin of his neck. A bearing of shame, it was, but he couldn't think of it too much. It would only anger him more from the years with that wretched woman. He sat down at the bar counter, tapping in an order on the touch-screen menu's, waiting for the robot tenders, preferably Grumpy, to fill in his order.

What a drag of a day it had been.

Duke scratched a spot on his head absently, then tiredly rubbed his cheek. His dark, tanned skin was red in some places from burn. Though it was not always apparent, it was true that people even with black skin could be burned. One just could not see the redness. And Duke was very burnt.

As his drink came, his dark gaze suddenly turned to look behind him. The person he saw was a young girl, much, much younger than himself. She smiled to him, sure, but Duke did no such thing. He furrowed his brow and...looked away. Typical old Duke.

As the woman with electricity running through her body came in, he did not even seem to notice. he shifted in his seat, then took the glass that the robot tender, Grumpy, gave it to him. It looked like it was just water in the glass, though it was much, much thicker. The cat? She did not draw his attention at all.

Had Duke known, he would not have acted very different. The cold air that blew around him had a hard time penetrating the layers of clothing he had on, which were sure to be discarded in the late night head. He did turn, however, only to rudely stare at the little girl in irritation. Should she hurt him, he could heal with a little effort, and he also had a gun inside of his coat and a few spells that would teach her a little something.

A certain young woman, eh? And who else might have that have been but Luli, who was currently sleeping int he room. Or being absolutely horrible. One of the two. He veered at the computer screen, once again with a cold, rock-hard stare. In fact, there was never a time when Duke's eyes seemed like heartless pits. Perhaps that is exactly what they were. As the man came up, he quirked a brow, drinking his strange glass of thick, clear liquid and then crossing his arms. "I am afraid I do not." he said to the strange man upon the computer screen.

As the little girl came over to bother him again, Duke simply looked at her, no expression upon his face. "Smith. You can call me Mister Smith." he replied. As she continued to make some kind of...'Nipah' sound, he only quirked a brow again.

"Sorry?" He was clearly not amused.

Duke almost laughed. However, a smile did not pass his face. He simply rose both eyebrows in amusement. "It's near impossible to make me smile kid," he told the young girl as he sipped the rest of the thick drink he had down.

"There ain't a thing in this world can make me smile. Don't bother trying to make up for anything." he told her. "Just don't pull that trick again."

To the computer? Well, as it got up onto its legs, he moved two seats over to try and tap it on the dashboard. "Hey, techhie. I want you to get rid of those files of Luli and I before I smash you on the floor. Sound fair?"

To Mileena, he scoffed. "Not when she gets angry the moment you turn away, no thanks."

Duke really was not yelling at the computer, no, not at all. His voice wasn't raised a notch when he demanded the computer delete the files. He was simply suggesting harshly that the computer delete Luli's files or else. There was no yelling about it.

"I do not care. Why do you have them? We have never had documents on us before. I want them gone. It really doesn't matter who has them or who can access them or who will kill me if I smash you."

And Mileena's venomous gaze was returned with an equally cold stare. To reply, he merely smirked. "Oh, that's a good one. Amusing, really. As if a couple of blokes couldn't just leave a grumpy ol' guy alone. I don't feel the need to move, kid. I'm just sitting down and drinking. You all are the ones giving me a bother."

Really. Duke barely knew about computers, coming from Madeva, and he barely wanted to know, either. As Rin apologized, he just grunted. Just. Grunted. He ordered another drink, probably his last for the night. The tab was running low on money. It meant he needed to do work soon. Luli wasn't holding up her part of the bargain.

Into the bar came two men. One was a man with light brown hair falling loosely past his ears. His skin was tanned, even burned in some areas, and his hands heavily calloused. His eyes were hard and cold as ice, half-lidded from either anger or apathy. It was hard to tell with such a man. His name was Duke.

The other strode beside him, his hair a much darker shade, almost black. His bangs lay heavily over one eye, hiding it from view. Not that Galvin was shy about it, but he did no think that people should have to see it if they did not want to.

Both men were dressed casually, Galven in a long-sleeved button down and jeans, Duke in a leather jerkin and a pair of breeches.

Duke directed his eyes to the violin, over the strings and the polished wood. He did not close his eyes or anything of the sort, but he did enjoy the music. He just did not seem like it. Then again, Duke never did seem to enjoy anything. He might have, but he never did seem to. His hands were clasped loosely as his elbows planted themselves on his knees. He sighed.

Duke's eyes widened, but barely a bit. Why had she stopped so swiftly? With such haste? He did not know, though the answer became somewhat clear as the woman wept into her hands. He did not jump up to comfort her- no. Duke was no such man. But he was, however, curious.

Something about the woman's choker reminded him of a familiar black ring that wound around his neck. It was like someone had tattoo'd it on, for it did not look like a piece of cloth, as this woman's choker was. It looked like skin.

Suddenly all too conscious of it, he pulled his collar up, then watched as the woman continued to play. However, they did veer off to stare daggers at Glimmer. Just because he wasn't going to comfort someone didn't mean he was going to allow them to get hurt.

...pfft. As if he could allow that to happen.

"Me? Not at all..." Duke replied, his eyes narrowing as he looked upon Glimmer. If he narrowed his eyes any more then he would not be able to see. "There are so many assassins that come here. Murderers, too. Unfortunately, I am not one of them." he said, focusing back onto Doree.

There was something wrong with her, but what? He leaned over to Vince, who had been speaking to that fire mage. "Can you pick up anything strange about her with your...er... expertise?"

"...I can't do that right now! Are you insane!?"

The sound of something sliding down rough bark came right after a cough from the figure. They fell down to the foot of the tree, slumped down into a pitiful mess. As the girl peered more into the shadows, she would see the strong, but dirtied face of a bulky young man. His hair was matted onto his face with dirt and sweat, and his tunic was splattered with blood.

"I don't think I'll be coming closer," he said, leering at her with shadowy eyes, "Since...I can't even walk...please, just...help." he said, his vision swimming in front of him. He was a mess, as if he had been out there at least a day, just trudging through the dirt.

"You have a knife," he observed, "They're...they're worms. Cut them out. Pierce the skin." He looked at her very seriously. "I-it wont hurt. They've numbed my arms. I can't feel them at all," he said. That was the problem, too.

"Do it as quick as you can." He really hoped she was not weak in the presence of blood. That would really put a dampener on his day. And he had to get some girl who didn't look like she knew much, anyway. Great.

Absolutely

Great.
