She sat up a little straighter, her eyes widening when she realized what he was going to do. Standing with him, she gave him a little bit of room, not really laying eyes on what he meant for her to see until he pulled up his shirt.

She gave a soft gasp.

She could almost imagine the scenario as her eyes played across his skin. His back to his attacker, and the look and feel as the whip struck, digging deep, uprooting deep chunks of flesh. Bone, muscle, and raw nerve would have been exposed.

She could almost feel the agony of it rippling up her spine. She had to take a moment, but then she stepped closer, her fingertips tracing his spine.

"Catanine tails." she murmured. There was an ache in her voice, something like sympathy, but far more profound. Her own kind of grief. "They did this to you?" The people he had left behind...

There was a moment of silence, before she tentatively reached to grasp his shirt, and pull it back down over his back. Physical punishment. It all seemed so severe.

She took his wrist, turning him around so she could get a better look at him, and then, without too much warning, she put her arms around him in a rather tender embrace.

"We all have our physical and emotional scars," She told him. "Including myself. So if you think that I'm going to turn you away because of something like that, regardless of how or why you got them, then you're mistaken."

Then, she let him go, still looking up at him with her strange eyes.

Her numb hand lay limp in her lap, but she curled her legs up, not caring that the couch got dirty. She leaned her head closer, resting her forehead against his.

"Strength in danger," she said quietly. "Victory in the brotherhood of the holy." She leaned just a little closer, gently, bravely brushing her lips against his.

"Cor vincula per commune dolores."

She brought their clasped hands up so she could brush his cheek with her thumb, her eyes burning, her face hot with emotion.

She kissed him again, a bit more firmly, before pulling back and sliding off of his lap. "I...don't mean to break this up," she said quietly, looking down at her limp and oddly swollen left hand, "But you're injured, and so am I. We need to get fixed up before we...wind down."

She blushed again, lifting her good hand and unzipping the suit. She wore a tank underneath, loose-fitting and damp from perspiration, and as she withdrew her injured arm from the suit, it looked to be redenned and uncomfortable.

Venom, though a small amount, had gotten through the suit when the pincers had clamped down on her forearm. She didn't seem overly concerned though, she turned her back on him to disappear to grab her med supplies.

And there, along the back of her shoulders, as if scrawled in scalding black pen, were the words
Pater, in manus tuas commendo hoc daemon.

Elliot returned to the living room, dressed in the tank top and a pair of cotton shorts. She was pulling the plunger off of a needle with her teeth, and sticking it expertly into the vein of her infected forearm. Looped over her arm was her basket of supplies, and after injecting the medicine into her arm, she walked up to him, laying her good hand against his chest so she could push him back to the couch.

She then knelt at his feet, looking over the wound in his foot.

"The words were a gift from my father." she told him quietly. "Before I was emancipated. He was a religious man, and attributed my ... issues to demonic possession."

She didn't look up at him.

"I was beaten, starved, burned, all in the hopes of getting the 'demon' out of my system. Finally, he started cutting holy words and symbols into my skin." Her hands shook slightly, but she continued to work, patching up the hole in his foot.

"I didn't feel too badly when he died of a stroke."

Her movements slowed almost to a pause as he slipped the medallion over her neck, the medallion falling against the curve of her chest. He made such heavy, weighted promises, such wonderful, beautiful commitments.

When she lifted her eyes to his, her own were red with tears, and she slowly rose so she could climb into his lap, straddling his legs and slipping her arms around his neck.

"What you're saying is no small thing." she murmured as a tear slipped down her cheek. "You're...sure."

And she was there, watching him with gentle eyes as she cupped his face in her palms, running her thumbs over the ridge of his cheek bones.

“More surprises?” she asked, slightly amused. Her eyes were warm, glistening with the remnants of her tears as she scooted closer, curling against his chest and slipping her arms around his neck.

“There’s nothing you have to tell me, Max. Nothing’s going to change this.”

Them, the way she felt. Even if some part of her mind thought it was wrong, and even if she was afraid, deep down, of disappointing him, she’d never been happier. He loved her. And…she thought she might love him too.

She leaned back, fixing him with a curious look. She didn't seem afraid, or even remotely concerned. She simply shrugged her shoulders, offering him the slightest of smiles.

"The future is promised to no one." she told him. "And I think you and I have too many worries to think about today, to let some unknown future influence the decisions we make." She cupped his face again, smoothing the hair back from his brow before laying a gentle kiss on his forehead.

"I'm not afraid of this," she told him, her lips brushing against his skin. Then, glancing down so that their eyes met, she offered a hesitant smile.

"I'd rather not sleep alone tonight, if I sleep at all..."

In spite of herself, she laughed, the sound dissolving into a giggle as she smiled at him. "Oh, really now? Well, I tend to talk in my sleep, so I suppose it'll be a game of who can stay sleeping the longest."

She tilted her head to one side, a sudden furrow coming to her brow.

"So...it doesn't bother you that there's something malignant that lives inside of me?" That thing that Rabbit feared would turn on all of them, the thing that had baited the monster those weeks ago when she and Max had fist met. . .

That thing that had driven her father to homicidal madness...

A shiver ran up her spine at his word, and his touch, and she turned her face away, unable to hide the grin that was starting to spread across her face. She was comfortable here, comfortable with him, and for the first time in a long while the woman felt incredibly safe.

Until he looked at her the way he did.

She cocked a brow, looking around for a moment, before eyeing the man slyly.

"What sort of game are you trying to play, Captain?"

She blushed delicately, letting her eyes fall closed as a sigh escaped her lips. One hand lifted, idly toying with the pendant he'd hung around her neck, before turning her palm and resting her fingertips against the hollow of his throat.

"I play to win," she warned him, her eyes slitting open as she smiled. "Just so you don't get your feelings hurt."

Elliot stood at Rabbit's shoulder, dressed rather primly in a pair of dark-wash jeans and a button-up blouse, with a brown vest to match her penny loafers. When off the field, the woman was nothing if not traditionally stylish. What was new to her accesorizing, however, was the pendant that Max had given her, the Imprimus token.

"Pretty quiet today." she admitted, smiling as Rabbit turned to look back at her. The Blasian man seemed calculative, quiet, as if he were trying to figure out the answer to a riddle only he knew.

"Mind getting us dwinks?" he asked her. "I'll find us a taybow."

Elliot nodded, turning on her heel, striding to the counter, past Jegun, and to a monitor so she could order.

Elliot's hand froze, her eyes shifting, turning to the man who had fixed her with a sudden, intense gaze. He had eyes that felt like a knife to the heart. She could feel him practically looking through her.

Finally finding her voice, she looked down at the medallion, touching it with the tips of her fingers before looking back to meet the man's eyes.

That was when she noticed his medallion. Her eyes seemed to widen. "Nowhere...I mean, I've had it."

She was a poor liar, and it showed.

In the meantime, Rabbit was sitting at his table, his fingertips steepled as he watched the two converse. That secretive smile of his had returned, the needle in the corner of his mouth flickering from one side to the other.

Elliot's cheeks flushed, and she drew in an unsteady breath. Rather than answering his question, she glanced back to the menu, plugged in a duplicate order, before leaning against the bar counter and reaching one arm across her chest to clasp at her opposite elbow.

"Could be worse," she replied with an idle shrug. She felt Rabbit's eyes on her, but ignored him. She also bypassed the question about the scarf. "Who are you?"

This is the friend who shares a soulbond...

She abruptly closed her mouth as it opened, questions threatening to bubble over. It was obvious that this man held no respect for Max, and that should have been enough to have her moving away...but she didn't. She just watched the other with a slightly furrowed brow.

"Seems there's no kindness spared towards him on your part," she said softly, keeping a healthy distance between him and her.

"I'm not afraid of Kyriel." she replied, her brows lifting, her expression plainly innocent. At his comment, his reference to Rabbit, she flushed again, looking towards the counter in an effort to compose herself.

"Max and I..." her voice was whisper-soft, but weighted. "I...you could only assume what you think you know." She barely glanced sideways, but Rabbit seemed to be busy with something, smiling down at his phone as he rapidly texted someone.

"This one's my boss. Possessive at times, but harmless." Yet she hadn't told him about Max. She had no plans to. Reeking of fire.

"Do you get along with Kyriel?" The question was abrupt, seemingly off-topic, but more along the lines of what she wanted to talk about.

"I...have one of my own. He calls himself Nicholas." Her ring flashed a bright, distinct red, before fading.

She nodded, not entirely comforted by what he was saying. Not that it mattered, she hadn't necessarily thought that this person would offer her comfort of any kind when it came down to it. "Sounds like a confirmation of everything I've experienced." she said, more to herself as she crossed her arms over her chest.

"I apologize if I've bothered you in the least," she told him. She had every mind to pretend this didn't happen, and knew she wasn't going to let this man know where Max was at this moment. She'd given something to help him sleep, and hoped that he stayed that way until she returned.

"We...found solace, in one another." It was the closest thing to 'happiness' that she could imply. Yet, it never felt happy. There was too much of a bittersweet taste to their newly budding romance. That, and anxiety over Rabbit tended to disquiet her.

Part of her wanted to say that Max felt bad, that he hardly slept, that he constantly thought about that event, but she knew it wasn't her argument to have. She was his companion, not his voice. Max was strong enough to hold his own.

The whole way home, she'd felt like she was being watched. It was one of those unsettling feelings that she couldn't shake, something that came from training and instinct and whatever it was that Nicholas had infused her with, probably paranoia.

She was dressed in workout gear, shorts and a t-shirt and tennis shoes. After her meeting with Rabbit, he'd taken her back to train.

It hadn't really ended well. She was going to need a potion for her abdomen. He'd hit her pretty hard.

When she came back into the apartment, she paused, looking around at the all-open kitchen. "Max?" she asked cautiously. "What...are you doing?"

She flinched at his touch, but smiled regardless, reaching up a hand to gently push her fingers through his soft hair. For a moment, she did little more than look in his eyes, searching their smoldering depths before looking down at his bare chest. "I, uh, had business to deal with." she told him, pulling her hand back and reaching to slip the pendant out from her tank top.

"Talked with Rabbit, did a little training, uh, oh! The sleep. I guess the wisteria I put under your pillow really worked for you huh?" She lifted her eyes to his, tilting her head to one side and smiling gently.

She gave a short bark of a laugh, lifting the hem of her shirt so he could see the ugly bruising on her abdomen. A little higher, and there was a still-weeping wound from where Rabbit had palm-thrusted her chest over the medallion.

"That definitely could have gone better." she replied, chuckling slightly before taking a step back. She glanced around him, towards the bathroom, and sidled in that direction to go get everything she needed.

It wasn't until she was at a distance that she turned to glance back at him, her hands groping for her supplies on the bathroom counter.

"So...his name was Jegun, wasn't it?"
