Name: Meke
Alias: Shahta'an
Age: 24
Species: Catfolk
Race: Mira
Place of Birth: Forest of the Fall, Aelora
Current Residence: N/A
Nationality: N/A
Family: Ryth (brother)

Meke is a quiet, but fierce warrior who served as second to Shief Leonis of the Ra'shak clan until his subsequent banishment one year after they arrived on Terra. Clanless, Meke now wanders Terra as a Shahta'an, which loosely translates to honorless, or one without honor.

When Meke departed from the Veshrak jungle at the age of twenty, he left behind a younger brother of only seven years of age. It was once believed that Meke would succeed Leonis as clan Shief, and that his brother Ryth would stand at his side as Shamana, but now it falls to Ryth to restore honor to his bloodline while Meke has taken up the life of a rogue.

As with all Mira, Meke has been trained in the art of combat from a young age.

So begins...

"Yuànsén you say?" From nearby in the market, a young man clad in blue glanced towards where Meke and Masaeyu were speaking. "I don't mean to eavesdrop, but I couldn't help but overhear."

Ryosuke offered Meke a bow of greeting with a smile, "The name's Matsui Ryosuke, student of Yuànsén and self-proclaimed swordsmaster. At your service, friend. What do you seek at the monastery, if I may ask?" As he rose, he flashed Masaeyu an amused grin, "Masa, you're being simple in the head again. He means he is searching for volunteers from here, to lend a hand with our problem. You think a traveller would go to the trouble of such a journey just to build a fence?"

Meke chuckled lowly.

"Indeed I am looking for workers here to begin the project," Meke explained. "Spare lumber and able hands. After that I must resume my own journey."

He took the offered fish and slung them over his shoulder.

"The reasons for my journey are personal," he explained to Ryosuke. "But they are not so urgent that I cannot assist with your kappa problem before I move on. I would ask of you to spread word of my intention among the village."

Masaeyu turned his head to catch Ryosuke, quite a familiar face, approaching. He glanced at Meke with an embarrassed chuckle. "Ah! My mistake!" He scratched the back of his head, brushing it off. "Well, in that case, you don't look like a madman at all for going about it that way!"

He let conversation pass between Ryosuke and Meke before speaking up once more. He wasn't sure if a fence in itself would fix the problem. They still needed to fish. They still needed to eat. But...it would bide them some time and hold back much danger so they would figure it out.

"We can do that." said Masaeyu. "Hey, Ryo, what are thoughts on this, ah?"

"A fence? Maybe it'll keep the children who like to play with death near the edge from falling in, and it will make it harder for the kappa to catch travellers unawares." Ryo shrugged his shoulders, "Not a solution, but a help, for sure."

He inclined his head to Meke in acknowledgement. "As you say. Many people come to the monastery for guidance in something close to their hearts. I do not doubt you will find something for you there. And of course, I'll spread the word for you."

Ryo grinned, "If there's one thing I'm good at other than the sword, it's talking."

Meke inclined his head in a nod.

"It is only my intention to provide a measure of safety for travelers on the road at night. It is not a solution, but if it affords some manner of protection until the source of the problem is solved, then it is time well spent."

He rubbed thoughtfully at his furry jaw.

"I must return these fish to Takeuchi Haruto. Volunteers are meeting down at the lake at noon if you would join with us."

"Understood. I'll make it! I'll get anyone I can to volunteer!" said Masaeyu to Meke, giving him a wave. "Enjoy the fish!"

This is good, thought Masaeyu. We get work. And without the danger of the kappa while fishing. It takes the strain off of a lot of the villagers. The children will be protected. So will any women who wander out.

He paused in thought, remembering that there was on little thing he needed to do. "Ryo!" he cried to the swordsman. "I need your help. I can't leave the stall and all the fish by itself. Would you mind finding my brother? He's out near the west side of the lake."

Ryo raised an eyebrow before nodding his head, "Alright, Masa. Is there a message you want me to carry, or ought I just say you're looking for him? And what on earth is he doing out there?" He shook his head with a chuckle, "In any case," Ryo glanced to Meke, "I'll be there at noon. One step at a time, eh?"

It was reaching noonday down at the lake where Meke was hard at work. Several of the townspeople had turned out to assist with building the fence alongside the main road, and many had supplied valuable lumber and materials of which the ministries had been unwilling to aid the village with.

Those that could work helped to move materials and to dig post holes, while others utilized hammer and nail to secure fencing. Those that were elderly, or too young, aided in other ways with the donation of food and drink for the workers.

All in all it wasn't a huge turnout, but it was a good number of people and with their assistance the fence would be complete in only a matter of days.

The post-and-rail fence wouldn't prevent the kappa from leaving the lake, but it would afford evening travelers some measure of security from being dragged unexpectedly over the embankments and into the water.

While the villagers were at work with the fence, Meke had made his way down to the lake edge where he was standing knee deep in the shallow water and nailing a post down into the lake-bed at a point adjacent from two other posts. A few of the villagers pointed and exchanged questions, but most were well enough occupied with their own work to not pay Meke too much mind.

For the moment anyways there was no sign of the kappa within the clear shallow waters that Meke stood within.

Ryo wiped a bead of sweat from his forehead, adjusting the hat he wore to shield him from the sun's glare overhead. He leaned forwards onto the post that he'd just finished embedding in the soil, stretching his exposed torso out and looking out across the beach towards where Meke stood. "Hey, traveller!" he called, "I'm curious, what are you doing putting a post out there? Some new plan?"

The young man raised one eyebrow, trying to figure out the possibilities for what the big cat-person could intend.

A short distance farther down the bank, Kyo stood with her bow at the ready in case the kappa were drawn to such a surge of activity at the water's edge. She glanced across to Meke after Ryo called out to him, but made no comment herself.

Meke was just finishing driving the post in when Ryo called out to him. He carefully waded through the clear water towards the bank - aiming to disturb the water as little as possible so as to not draw unwanted attention from the deeper recesses of the lake.

He retrieved another post from the waters edge before pointing at the embankment. "There," he told Ryo. "Where the soil is eroded."

The region he pointed to had been worn thin by frequent use but shielded well by the undergrowth that grew alongside the road.

"Meke! Mr. Meke, sir!" a boy called out as he came running along dragging behind him some netting that looked like it probably weighed more than the lad himself.

"I got what you asked for!" he yelled as he waved excitedly.

Meke grunted his approval and pat the lad on the head as he slung the netting over his shoulder.

"It is my wish to catch one of these kappa of yours," Meke explained.

Meke appeared with such abruptness that it almost seemed as if he had simply risen before before Surniph. He planted himself squarely between her and the militiaman that approached her from the front and a low snarl ripped from his throat.

Meke was an imposing figure even for a Mira, and his muscled form rippled with the aggression that rolled off him. Even his breathing was deep and husky as he stared the female down.

The lad that had found Meke peered on from behind a wagon of vegetables, eyes wide as saucers at the volatile change in Meke's behavior.

"You are unwelcome in these lands, Surniph of the Ta'kra," Meke snarled lowly. "You should not have left Aelora."

The trio of militiamen seemed uncertain what to make of the situation. Meke was Kyo Takeuchi's guest, but for the moment he appeared as feral and dangerous as the wounded Mira that had appeared within the village.

The snarling ceased abruptly, Surniph's ears twitching backwards in quiet recognition of her former clan mate. Just as suddenly, however, a row of sharp white teeth appeared, a smile curling over her features as she took him in.

He had changed on her. Become bigger, harder looking. It had been too long since she had seen him last, and their parting hadn't been under the best of circumstances. But the aggression, the flat threat delivered from one of her own kind, was something she knew well. She latched onto it.

"It appears," she said, gesturing towards her wounds, "that I hadn't any choice. Not happy to see me, Meke? Is that how one treats an old friend in this land?"

"The Ta'kra are no friend to the Ra'shak," he growled back. "Or to me."

It was a peculiar thing, that he had identified himself apart from the rest of the tribe that had split from Aelora.

He grabbed a fist full of the front of her clothes and dragged the injured female to her feet as his fiery gaze locked on hers. His face was so close that she could feel his heated breath upon her fur, and make out the distinct shades of green within the irises of his eyes.

"What is your purpose in coming here," he growled.

If the grab had hurt the female Mira, she gave no sign of it; her sly grin hardening into a warrior's mask that revealed nothing but her yellow-green eyes. Goliath, her shief, had often spoke in disgust of their weak willed and weaker limbed brethren clan that lived on the other world, and how they had likely grown fat and lazy without the Forest to sharpen their instincts and their bodies as tools for the hunt.

If there was weakness in Meke, she didn't feel it. He was every bit as fierce as he had been when they had shared a shief.

"I knew not that you owned these lands, Meke," she said, frostily, her hands reaching to grip his own, tightening around his wrists, "and I do not owe you an explanation. You will release me, or we'll both risk the Right of Blood."

Surniph lifted her chin, bracing herself against him to gain distance, eyes narrowing even further.

"All the meaning in the world. As I recall, Meke, you abandoned us. You have little right to comment on the honor of a clan when you've fled like rats from the rightful shief. Now unhand me."

"A shahta'an has no right to name himself Shief," Meke growled lowly. "A shahta'an has no clan, nor title. Your Shief lost his claim to such things long ago when he betrayed your Shamana and the ancestors with her," he reminded her vehemently as he released his hold upon her clothes, leaving her to either stand or fall. "As did those who followed him."

The female Mira staggered backwards, keeping her balance by sheer determination and refusal to look weak in front of a potential combatant. Her right leg was almost entirely useless for standing, and so she leaned towards the left, gaze on his thoughtfully.

"Survival over all," she said, defiance lacing through her voice. The mantra that had persisted throughout her brutal tenure under Goliath's leadership, the one that had banded together her clan, came forth. Even as her vision blackened, adrenaline bled out of her quickly, her vision swimming, she managed to hold her chin high.

"We waste time dredging old wounds, warrior. I wish an audience with your Shief. I will go under whatever guard you deem necessary in order to pass along a simple message. Afterwards, I will accept whatever fate befall me."

"I have no Shief," Meke replied.

He turned from the female to walk away, pausing only briefly to look over his shoulder.

"These people. Harm them, and we will see one another again," he warned.

Surniph watched him, every barbed comment fleeing her as he stated his promise, heavy with threat. Unable to do more, she merely nodded her acknowledgement.

She had no ill will towards these people.

And with that, she let the darkening around her vision claim her, falling backwards towards the ground, slipping into sweet, comforting oblivion.
