Enda's head flew back as she laughed at the child's antics. Of course, Enda had known snow all her life; she was born in snowy peaks!

"A blizzard? Ah, yes. A blizzard is when it snows very, very hard. So hard that you cannot see. And it gets very windy. And colder. You do not want to get caught in one, Spyri." warned the knight. She walked off and watched the child carefully.

"But enjoy it now! It's quite nice...right now..." Even as she said this, the snow steadily fell in more abundance. It worried her.

Stopping her antics, Spyri followed after Enda. The snow was cold as it fell on her exposed face, and it really was starting to fall. So much snow! Looking skyward as she walked along, Spyri mused as to where all of this could be coming from. Perhaps the sugar of the Gods...

The knight kept walking, noticing that...the mountains were coming closer much faster than anticipated. Not only that, but they were nearing them much faster than they should have been. Enda narrowed her eyes. They began to fade. The snow thickened swiftly, and soon, Enda could not see ten feet in front of her face, then five, then soon, not even one.

"Spyri? Spyri, where are you?" called Enda.

----

Spyri would find herself surrounded by white. The snow would crunch underneath her feet and fall atop her head and shoulders. The wind picked up dangerously, howling in the girl's ears and drowning out Enda's own.

And, thirty paces from where she was standing, she would see it. A cave. An icy cave that would hold refuge.

As they walked, the white began to thick, and thick, and thick...

"Enda?!" The child hugged herself as the storm whirled around her. Staggering in the wind, she headed for the only logical place: The cave.

Within the cave was a dark, pervading chill that seemed to pierce worse than the outside blizzard. As Spyri walked in, the path would be illuminated, but only that. Behind her, the darkness followed.

If she were to keep walking, many icicles clacked gently together from the ceiling, and ahead, the darkness gave way to a dim blue glow.

There was a pedestal there, crafted by intelligent hands, and upon the pedestal, a sword with icy hands grasping the blade with the hilt pointing in the air.

walked through the cave, looking behind her at first into darkness. Taking a breath in and pushing it back out, she continued down the strangely illuminated path. Drawing in her arms, she continued forth.

A strange sound, almost like glass, was emanating from the cave ceiling. Spyri did her best not to let it bother her as she continued down this strange path. Where was it taking her? She knew not, but at least it wasn't the treacherous blizzard.

Enda! Her stomach dropped as she thought of her newly found companion, a lump gathering in her throat. Where was she? Was she ok? What if she-
No.
Suppressing thoughts of loss with a hard gulp, Spyri did her best not to let dread overcome her as she walked on. The pain of losing one close was a harsh, cold feeling, colder even than the snow which fell beyond the dark spans behind her.

What was that up ahead? Why was it blue? The child glanced again behind her, the darkness unnerving her in the slightest. She hurried her pace, towards that eerie blue.

Closer, closer...

Her face was awash with blue, and there it was. A gasp escaped her purple-d lips, her eyes growing like lamps in the low light. The pedestal rose, a magnificent thing, and atop it...

"...woah..."
The sword they sought.

The sword was in reach, so close, so real.

And in a moment, it would be so far. So impossible. Before Spyri would get a chance to even touch it, the scenery shifted dramatically. A crack formed in the pedestal, and out of it rose a statue made of ice that held the sword. The statue was a woman, tall and slender, wearing a flowing gown. Some smart mechanism had her arms coming together and sheathing the sword as she emerged. This is where Spyri could see the sword as a whole: It was a cane sword, and it did not look like a sword at all when sheathed. It was disguised as a cane with a silvery handle at the top, the rest of it covered in black. A rapier.

It was the last look she would get before the ice all around her started to crack and burst, and the cave receded and left sky. The cracks formed a circle on her spot, and she sailed quickly away from the statue on it.

Before her, the ice shifted back and forth, sometimes creating a path, sometimes leaving it as an impossible lake of water. Back and forth, back and forth.

Behind her was a roar. She was not alone.

She staggered backwards in reaction to the cosmic display. Never had she ever witnessed something so glorious, so ethereal. And the blade...

Flinging her arms to cover her head, Spyri recoiled from the sudden shatter. When she peeked over, everything was different. The floor was gone, it was water, with tiny islands of ice swimming around. Every now and again, like the moons had surely done on this day, the ice chunks would align to form a path.

And then, the roar. Whipping to face the source of the noise, she instantly turned back, determination knit into her brow. Whatever that was, it couldn't be good. The thought of Enda danced across the shallows of her mind as she trained her eye on the floating ice.

She knew what she had to do.

As the first chunk floated before her, Spyri clasped the hilt of her blade in one hand, and made to jump. Landing on the slippery mass, setting it slightly off kilter, Spyri did her best to keep balance. She could not, would not, fall into that endless sea.

Steady, steady... The next chunk made it's way before her, but this time she would do it right. Drawing her blade as it neared, the child leaped forth, slipping the sharp object into the ice as she landed. Kneeling, holding fast, she would not fall from the ice.

This continued thrice more, as she grew closer to the object of her desire.

Behind, great, thundering steps neared her, causing ripples in the water. The hoarse, echoing roar was let out again, and if she were to look, Spyri would get her answer as to what was following her.

A great white beast with long, shaggy fur, with its face blue from the cold and large, black horns curling around its head. It was on all fours, but it looked half human within shape, if not features. It bared razor sharp teeth and leaped onto the first sheet of broken ice, making it sink momentarily for its weight. It must have been six times Spyri's height.

The ice broke again, and this time, instead of lining up back and forth, the ice began to revolve around the island with the statue and the sword, like the planets around the sun. Each sheet of ice went at a different pace, and formed much more ragged paths to the statue.

The water began to ripple, and it was her mistake for looking to see what was there. Her heart dropped as the creature, the beast, the abomination galloped into view.

It was now or never. She went to move, but the ice broke again and... Really? Fright plagued her consciousness, she had to get to the sword! As she was carried away from the next sheet of ice, her mind raced. There had to be an easier way,
But there wasn't.

Rapidly, here came the next sheet of ice. Without thinking twice, the child threw herself onto it. She barely managed to stab it with her sword, throwing out a hand to aid in her balance. The ice burned her flesh, but it was the least of the little girls worries. Scampering up, she clung to her sword, preparing for the next jump.

The block of ice surged towards the next, and when it grew near she flew towards it. Hurtling through the air, whipping her blade before her, Spyri slammed it into this ice piece with more grace than the prior. Glancing back, panic fluttered her stomach again.

No, no time for that. Spyri looked towards the next sheet, which interestingly enough was closer than she would have anticipated. In one swift movement, Spyri yanked out her sword and punctured the next floating chunk with it. She hadn't experienced fright like this, ever, and this element was not in her favor. Spyri would do it, however, narrowing her eyes on the prize.

This child had looked death in the face once before, and would do it again need be. She was, after all, Brave. Realizing her fate, the young girl's blood began to surge strong. Adrenaline flowing through her veins like fire, her inner truth beginning to peek through, Spyri focused on the next block of ice, and jumped again. There was something different about the child from that moment on, from the way she maneuvered to the star sitting in her irises. Spyri would get that sword.

The child was quick on her feet, intelligent, and was making progress, but ah, so was the beast, who's power was unmatched in the wasteland. It leaped right behind Spyri as she jumped, just barely clipping at the air behind her heels. The beast roared in frustration, then leaped onto the next sheet, and then next, right on the girls heels. They were on opposite sides of the sword now, but this would not end quickly. The abominable beast took a detour, using a diagonal path to make it around to Spyri again, and quickly. As she leaped onto the next, it launched after her, catching the side of her ice berg and trying to sink it.

There were just three more stepping stones for her to go. Three more. She was almost there.

She had not anticipated the beast to have intelligence to match its size, but it did. As it chased her, she used her fear to drive her, empower her.

But it was almost the end for Spyri, that was what she felt as the creature clipped her berg. Holding fast to her blade, the child let out a screech, the sheet of ice swaying this way and that.

This creature would not be her demise. She would obtain the sword.

Water sloshed across her feet for but a moment, and that was all it took to kick her innate being into gear. The brave began to surge strong inside of her soul, giving Spyri the boost of strength she would need. But would she be able to use it properly?

It was now or never. Ripping the blade from the ice where it was wedged from her previous leap, she lashed out with it towards the beast in a mighty arc. Using the momentum from the swing, Spyri spun on her toe and hurtled with her blade towards the next sheet of ice. Gripping it with both hands, she stabbed, curling around the blade as it plummeted into the floating frozen mass. The berg swayed from the impact of her force, dangerously so, but all the same floated away from the beast.

The courage was what made it for little Spyri, it seemed, for as she lashed out at the monster, it had nowhere to run off to, and the blade bit deep into its chest, sending a ribbon of warm scarlet into the cold blue water. It lashed its head back for a final cry, but no sound came. Claws grasped at its chest, and the beast sunk into the water.

At the death of the monster, the ice bergs stopped its revolution, then lined up, one last time, to make a perfect path in front of Spyri to the sword. The maiden set in ice waited, presenting it to her.

Suddenly, the ice stopped moving. She didn't understand why, but when Spyri peered up from her position she saw...

Nothing.

No beast.

Just blood.

Her heart pounded in her chest, did that really just happen? Did she just...Kill the beast? Slowly, she pulled herself to a stand. Bracing her feet, bending at the knees, the child yanked her blade from the ice. Using it like one would use a cane, Spyri made her way to the maiden with the sword.

Hopping onto her target, Spyri sheathed her blade. Wide eyed she shuffled towards the maiden.

Using the same hidden mechanism as before, the ice statue knelt down, then offered out the blade to the little girl for her to take. It was right there. The real thing. No tricks this time.

As she reached out, the maiden moved her lips. "Spyri." she said, opening her eyes. "Spyri. Spyri!"

As the sword was received, a bright flash of light would ignite before the little warrior's eyes, and by the time her sight came back, she would see the frozen plains before her, snow coming down in the same blizzard. Someone would be shaking her.

"Spyri! Spyri, are you alright? Spyri!" cried Enda, her eyes wide in worry. She looked at the girl's hands.

"My...spirits...Spyri...you've found the sword!"

All became white before she could make another move. Standing still, her mind spun, reaching for reality. There was one thing she knew for sure in blank abyss of white.

She had Cha'tlag.

Grasping the blade, Spyri blinked at the voice that swam in her consciousness. Where was she? Where was it coming from? And was that...

"Enda?" The name was faint leaving the child's lips, as her eyes focused on the woman. Her vision blurred, then became clear again. The adrenaline was wearing off, the Brave growing faint in her heart.

"...yeah..." Spyri stared blankly up at Enda, partially in shock, partially in disbelief, but mostly exhausted.

Enda felt her heart race from fright. She had been carrying the child along, was all. She was sure she could look after her at least a little bit, but when she had gone missing, the knight did not know what came over her. And now...the child had the sword.

"So it chose you," she began, nodding slowly in disbelief, "As its wielder. Cha'tlag has chosen you. That belongs to you now, Spyri. You are now a holder of one of the Seven Swords. You're part of the legend now." Enda managed a sigh.

"Part of more than a legend."

"...oh..." Sleep was tugging at her consciousness, the Cha'tlag cradled in her arms. With heavy lidded eyes, the child looked up at Enda.

"Legend..."
