Jethro "Black" Blackburn

The local gunsmith and arms dealer

0 · 285 views · located in Splitcreek, Arizona

a character in “Way Out West”, as played by Twisty

Description

Given Name: Jethro Blackburn

Nickname: Black

Gender: Male

Age: 42

Good guy or bad guy? Explain: Good guy, although he tries to stay somewhat neutral

Position/occupation: Gunsmith, he owns and runs "The Blackburn armory" along the main street in Splitcreek

Personality: Jethro is a happy and positive guy although he tends to keep quiet and think before he acts. He usually doesn't loosen up and start taking (or singing) until heĀ“s finished what he was working on and have had a couple of drinks, he can usually be seen playing poker or dice in the evening at the Silver Spur saloon with a random assortment of people. He is very serious when he is working on a weapon and prefer to be doing it alone, heĀ“s got somewhat of a "no criminals policy" but finds it hard to maintain it sometimes since its very hard to know if a person is wanted or not when the posters only have a nickname an a vague outline of their face.

Skills: Gun smithing, some blacksmithing and he knows the basics of using pretty much every gun you can think of (its a part of his job after all), although this doesn't mean heĀ“s aim is any good.

History: Jethro had a pretty average childhood growing up in a middle class family on a farm a couple of miles outside New York. He got an apprenticeship at a local blacksmith/gunsmith but after finishing it he never managed to get the funds to open his own shop. When the war started he joined up with the Union and served behind the lines by maintaining weaponry and equipment. When the war was over he headed back home but after a year realized that there where almost no market for weaponry in the more "civilized" area around New York and decided to head west. After a couple of years traveling from town to town he finally came across a small town called Splitcreek and decided to stay and set up shop, he has now lived in Splitcreek for about 4 years and his shop has been thriving.

Courting anyone? Being courted?: No

Married?: No

Appearance: Jethro is about 5Ā“5 and average built, he has short hair brown and a stubble. He usually keeps his clothing pretty simple, a gray shirt with the sleeves rolled up, tan trousers and a brown stetson.

Jethro put away the last of the guns that had needed repair and got up from his workbench. He walked through the door to the "store" part of his little business, the part where he kept all the weapons and accessory's that he had for sale and also the only part that most of his customers ever saw.
Walking in behind the counter he picked up a notebook and started making notes on what the owners of the weapons that he had just finished repairing owed him for the job.
Shortly after he had finished, a delivery boy entered and gave him a letter addressed to him, he paid the boy for the delivery and opened the letter.

Dear Jethro,

ItĀ“s been to long since we last wrote, and we hope your still doing well out in there on the frontier and that you have finally found yourself a woman since it will not be soon until youĀ“re the last of your siblings to start a family, because your sister is finally getting married! The weeding is being held in San Antonio, the man your sister is engaged to is Bill Jefferson and San Antonio is his and his family's home town so we all agreed that it should be held there seeing as most of our relatives are spread out across the west anyways.
On the back of this letter I have written down the date and the address as well as a list of gifts everyone else is bringing for your sister, I donĀ“t want the same thing that happened on your cousinĀ“s weeding to happen again, I donĀ“t think I will ever see so many fruit baskets at the same time again.
Anyway, your father is asking me to make these invitations short because he thinks IĀ“ll never get them done in time otherwise, we hope you will be able to come and if so weĀ“ll pray that you will have a safe journey.

Love, Mom

Jethro smiled at the thought of his little sister getting married, he could remember her saying that she would never get married and that she wanted to become a blacksmith like Jethro. Although, when she said that she was only eight and couldn't tell the difference of a blacksmith and a gunsmith.
When he looked up from the letter the delivery boy was just about to leave.
"Thanks" he said, catching the kids attention. "Could you do me a favor?"
"Maybe" the delivery boy replied. "Could you spread the word that IĀ“ll be gone for a while?" The boy hesitated "Whats in it for me?"
Jethro chuckled, the boy wasn't stupid. He threw him a coin. "Will that suffice for you candy needs?"
The boy nodded with a big smile and ran of towards Masterson & Son.
Jethro folded the letter and put it in his pocket and then started packing a bag, it was going to be a long trip..
