XX Where hero and villain meet, a grave battle shall follow...

In a world where supernatural children are a small percentage of babies born, children who possess these abilities are ripped from their families the moment their powers awaken and are whisked away to a place called the Institute. xx
Citizens are told that this school, and many others like it around the country, exist to help young supernaturals learn about their powers and understand their own strength, so as to keep them from ever harming themselves or others. Underneath the surface, however, these children are taught to kill, to lock away their emotions and inhibitions in favor of following the government's personal agenda. Carefree children missing their families become blank soldiers who can no longer comprehend what a family is. They become shells following military orders unblinking. xx
While government propaganda has many citizens believing the lie, there are those who resist and oppose the people behind it all. There are those who fight back, who wish for nothing more than the truth to be revealed. This is where we will begin our story. It is not a story about villains, or about heroes, or about the villains who fight the heroes. xxx
This story is about a boy who did not care at all but now cares too much, and about the boy he cares too much for. xx

XX Briar's Mind

The halls of the institute have always been cold. Heat was a luxury that the children turned soldiers that walked the corridors didn’t get to possess. Walking down a long and bare corridor, it’s the chill cold that is the first thing to attack any and all senses. It is impossible to tell this far down underground what time it is; the sun is a luxury; everything is a luxury. Everything is silent, void of life for a very long time and no time at all until a scream rings through the empty halls.

In a sanitary white room with lights beyond bright, everything in Oscar hurts. He’s a child; he’s always been a child even now as the flash of his present-day form echos but not seen. Yet he’s young, so young it’s clear there is a new loss in this boy. He’s lost his entire team; he had to watch the people he loved die. Adriel and her baby died. Her screams still ring in his ears and it’s killing Oscar from the inside. He cries and screams curled up in the corner of the room, his nails long since dug into his flesh, spoiling the white cell with his blood.

They left him there until he stopped, voice hoarse and lost to his grief until he stared blankly at the wall opposite him. He’s lost track of which blood is his. He doesn’t care anymore. If they would of ever allowed it he would be dead. But he’s not. I’m a coward. That’s the only thought in his brain and he curls in on himself tighter. You died for nothing Briar. I’m alone. Footsteps are approaching and he knows who it is, he doesn’t need to try and hear her thoughts, the woman who will kill him is approaching and he’s okay with it, okay with death. Oscar Wilson died the moment Briar did, and that was a long time ago.

It's cold.

Colors swirl in Briar's eyes. No, not colors. No colors here.

It's so cold.

Endless white corridors stretch in every direction, flickering with black shadows. Briar searches for something, anything, to tell him what to do, where to go. Nothing is solid.

He longs for the sun, the sky, the wind howling in his ear. He longs for warmth. For color.

He longs for life.

At the Institution, life is a luxury. Here, life is a luxury.

This is a dream.

The realization comes as a whisper. This is a dream. He's not really here. But why is he here?

The dream changes. It's cold, so cold. The smell of blood is sharp and vivid.

He's in a room, an oh-so-familiar room. There's a boy, oh-so-familiar, curled in the corner. Briar hears Oscar's screams and feels his pain and his heart weeps. Adriel is dead. Matthias is dead.

Briar is dead, and it's all his fault.

These aren't your thoughts, The dream whispers. These aren't your memories.

I'm a coward.

The words are a whisper and an echo and a scream all at once, in the way that only dreams can accomplish. They brush against the dream like a bird fluttering against the bars of its cage.

Memories. Oscar's memories.

You died for nothing, Briar. I’m alone.

No. I'm still here.

Speaking to the not-quite-a-dream is an effort in futility. Briar has no presence here, no power here. The dream frays along its edges but remains, unchanging. Oscar remains, hurting, hurting.

Footsteps, oh-so-familiar, shake the dream. Briar trembles and Oscar stills- one, terrified, the other, relieved. Each crack of a heel on hard stone cracks the dream, until a doorknob turns and Oscar resigns himself to death, for what fate is worse than a life of guilt and solitude?

XX Briar Harvent xx#82BCAD

Briar wakes in a cold sweat, gasping for breath that can't seem to come fast enough. He's frozen stiff, his body heavy, and for a long moment, he struggles to separate reality from the dream.

He's in a bed. He's in Oscar's apartment.

Oscar is next to him, warm and peaceful and alive, so very alive.

Briar forces his eyes to open and adjust to the dark. The walls are featureless, their surroundings just as blank, and Briar is reminded of what Oscar has become in his absence. Cold. Featureless.

But he's not lost. He still has empathy. He still has love.

Oscar's skin is soft and warm under Briar's touch, and he realizes he's rolled onto Oscar sometime in the night. His eyes adjust further to the dark, and he sees Oscar, awake, staring at him. Even in the dark, his eyes are sharp and all-seeing, and Briar is reminded of what touch means, here.

He can hear me. He can always hear me.

A pause.

He showed me his dreams.

"Was it on purpose?" Briar asks, voice hoarse from sleep. Did you want me to understand?"

XX Oscar Wilson

Oscar wakes up and feels cold. The chill that has set into his bones more than just a memory, it's tangible. But it's not numbness, and it slowly occurs to him that if the cold is the only thing he gets to feel he doesn't want to open himself to whatever pain that brings. It takes a few long seconds to feel the warmth over his right side, comforting body heat to push away the thoughts of being cold in a white room. Briar is here he doesn't need to run from the cold.

But he's not lost. He still has empathy. He still has love. Does he? Do I?

Teal eyes meet his as the warmth from the man next to him threatens to push away any of these problematic thoughts.

Mission Priority?

Oscar can see everything but nothing at once, he's confused and scared and it's like it all goes away when Briar turns to him. He becomes numb, but it's not like it was in that room. When he thought his ...teammates were dead... family?

"Was it on purpose? Did you want me to understand?" Did he?

Oscar's eyebrows furrow in intense concentration as he tries to process both the question and the answer. He hadn't meant to share his memories, memories he hadn't thought about in a very long time. He wasn't allowed to focus on what was only the mission. He still feared that woman, he was supposed to fear her. For too long he tried to process what fear even was, why it consumed him even now, the woman was far away why was she still the monster under the bed?

" I don't understand it." There it was. The truth. There was turmoil in his body and mind and it was starting to overwhelm him. He looked down at where his skin met Briars with an analyzing eye. It felt like he was glued to this position as he managed to tear himself away from the warmth. He wasn't cold anymore, he was back to the numbers he knew well, the blank state that had become comforting to him. Getting up from the bed and backing away from Briar, from the touch, from the thoughts he wasn't used to. For the first time even in this numb state, he had questions. Why am I here? Why do I follow this? Should I go back to HER?

"Is this what you wanted? What is the directive in this mission?"

Briar would wake up to two very small faces pressed up against his. One face belonging to a young 2-year-old boy who seems to be half asleep and the girl around 4 years old seems to be the spitting image of Adriel as a child. Her wild hair messed up in all different directions and her pyjamas covered in chibi strawberries and strangely the scent of flowers and strawberries following her. Her face was a mixture of confusion and excitement as she hugged a small bear to her chest. "Who are you? Why are you in Mummy and Daddy's bed? Do you want a strawberry?" She holds out an empty hand and for a second Briar would of thought it was imaginary. Then slowly in her hand a small strawberry plant starts to grow. Until she has a plant growing a single fresh and ripe strawberry. Which the boy takes much to her protest. It's at that point a growl comes from Adriel's mouth and the two kids freeze eyes wide. A grumpy looking Adriel peels herself from the cuddle pile and glares at her children. "Is your sun up?" The girl shifts her feet. "No... but Fluffy said-" "I don't care what fluffy said you know the rules." It's at this point Matthias chuckles and slips out of the bed. "Come on you two let's get you some breakfast and let Mummy sleep." He scooped them both up in each arm tickling the boy to make him giggle and stepped out of the room a large Saint Barnard dog running at his heels backing and following them. "Daddy! Fluffy needs to go!" "Rose don't shout sweetie I'll let fluffy outside in a second."   There's a sound of a door opening and through the open doorway that Matthias left behind is a young boy around 12/13, but his feet don't touch the floor as he silently creeps past seemingly intending not to disturb the grumpy, pregnant lady.

Briar, despite the Institute and its routines being a full five years in the past, is a light sleeper. It doesn't take much to wake him- a racoon knocking over a trash can, two cats having sex down the street, someone walking past his bedroom. This morning in particular, it's two doe-eyed children. xx
He watches Matthias disappear down the hall with three kids in tow, and reflects on everything that's gone on in the few short minutes he's been awake. It's without question that their daughter and older son - which confuses Briar a bit, because there's no way they have a twelve-year-old if they've only been free for four years, but that's a question for later - are Supernaturals. Watching a strawberry plant grow from a little girl's hand and bear fruit within ten seconds is something Briar is immensely intrigued by, and the older boy- can he levitate? Fly? Both of them are spectacular. xx
Briar instantly chides himself for leaving their littlest boy out of his silent praises, because he was adorable, and if Briar had been in his place, he probably would've stolen that strawberry too. It's like he's living in a dream, a dream where the Institute never existed and he's simply built a life with Matthias and Adriel, with their three beautiful children and gigantic dog named Fluffy of all things, with their fixer-upper house they remodeled themselves and their too-energetic neighbors. xx
Adriel burrows back into their blanket pile to sleep some more and Briar stifles a giggle. Even when they were kids and supposed to be able to wake up at a moment's notice, Adriel has never been a morning person, and Briar thinks it's funny how that's what stuck with her all these years. xx
Briar carefully climbs out of newly-dubbed Heat Mountain and gets dressed, skipping a shower only because trying to figure out how their system works feels like too daunting a task right now. As he walks through the hall, he peeks into open doors. A bathroom with little stools stashed by the sink, toothbrushes in cups on the counter, various succulents printed on the shower curtain. One of the bedrooms holds a bunk bed, half the room a mess of toys while the other half is immaculately clean, and another of the bedrooms is really more of a greenhouse than a bedroom. xx
Matthias is in the kitchen cooking when Briar makes it downstairs, and the kids are all sat at the table, the younger two practically bouncing while they wait for breakfast. Briar forces himself to not act as awkward as he feels, and carefully sits by Rose, who is smiling from ear to ear as she pats the chair next to her with enough force that the floor shakes a little. He's barely sat down when a barrage of questions begins, but Briar gives full attention. "Hi, my name is Rose Marie Herod! What's your name? What's your favorite color? Do you like strawberries? What's your superpower? How do you know my mummy and daddy? Will you play with me? Do-" xx
Briar can't help but laugh, and Rose stops her questions to watch him, instead going back to bouncing, eager for his responses. "It's been a while since anyone's wanted to know that much about me." He says, smiling at Rose, who smiles back twice as bright. "Well, my name is Briar Harvent. It's nice to meet you, Rose. Blue is my favorite color, but they're all pretty nice. I've never actually had strawberries. And my superpower is... uh..." Briar pauses, unsure how to explain. "Hm. Here, may I take your hand?" Briar glances at Matthias. Matthias nods back. xx
"So, Rose, what's your favorite color?" "Pink!" "Good choice! Here goes," Briar concentrates, and the roots of Rose's dark hair start to change color, washing down her curls until it's all a soft baby pink. Briar gently pulls forward a lock of hair for Rose to see and she squeals. "I can change the cells in your body. Which means I can fix cuts or bruises just by touching you." xx
Briar doesn't say how he can hurt someone as easily as he can heal them, because these kids don't need to know, and he wants to keep that kind of harshness from them as long as he possibly can. xx

Briar is 20 during present-day. Oscar is 19, but nearing his 20th birthday. Adriel is 24 and Matthias is 25. Maia is 28 and Aiden is 27. Cedar is 19. Nick is 14. Lily is 8.

Rebellion - Lily is a little girl under the rebellion's protection. Her ability is Truth, meaning no one, supernatural or not, can say anything but the truth in her presence. She can also sense the truth in inanimate objects; for example, she can touch a body and know that the person was murdered, even though they appear to have died accidentally. Her ability is incredibly powerful and as such her existence is kept rather secret- few members of the rebellion know about her, and even fewer have actually met her.

XX Side Characters
Squad W - Alongside Briar and Oscar are three other supernaturals, who were trained with them at the Institute from around 8-10 years of age. Whistle, (Adriel), the only girl, is a long-range fighter whose ability is to mimic sounds, whether those be natural sounds or voices. She is good with a bow and arrow, particularly a longbow, and prefers them over guns. Walker, (Matthias), is a melee fighter whose ability is to... well, essentially smite. He can blow people's heads off. Through the power of thought. Like One Punch Man. Whirlpool, (Maximus), is a melee and range fighter whose ability is to manipulate water. He can shape water however he wants- liquid, ice, steam. He can even control blood.

Rebellion - Briar lives in a two story house on the opposite end of the city from the Institute. He lives with several other rebellion members. Cedar is his roommate, a small boy who can control gravity (think Uraraka from BNHA) around any point. He's known for being energetic and aggressive, and his abilities seep out with his emotions. Maia is an older member, more like a leader, who can read minds and push thoughts or ideas into other people's minds. Aiden is Maia's husband, who doesn't have an ability but is military trained. Nick is Maia's adopted son brother, the youngest of the group, and has the ability to control electronics, making him skilled with computers and hacking.
