Introduction
The Yurei are often debated highly amongst professionals. Are they a different species? Are they merely technology? Whilst they can talk amongst themselves and to others and interact with the world around them, they cannot change. Their personality and looks are based on the memory that the client provides at the time of storage and do not update; they are seemingly locked as they are, unchangable and constant. They are often extremely different from how the actual person is.
Our story begins in hospital. John has just woken up from a coma, courtesy of a lorry with faulty breaks and an ill timed road crossing. He has no memories. His brain, extensively damaged in the accident are unreachable and unfixable. His personality is a mystery to him, and his list of emergancy contacts are completely empty. He has nothing but his address and national insurance number on record. John returns to the address after a few weeks of care and is greeted by a strange man who claims he is John's neighbour, asks how he is, and hands him the spare key. Nonplussed, John enters what he is told is his home.
His home is a little flat in a big block of flats, and is sparsely decorated. There is very little to go by; a few bills and letters are scattered around, but nothing concrete and nothing which provides any information as to who or what he was. He has no job he can go to, and appears to have no friends and family that he keeps in contact with. Confused and depressed, John tries to piece together his life.
After a few weeks of moping, John's phone begins to ring, a shrill tone that pierces the flat. He runs to it, filled with hope that someone will be able to explain what he is.
"Hello?"
"Hello sir, is this John Doe speaking? The voice is that of a woman. She is pleasant and professional sounding.
"Yes."
"Oh, hello. This is Story Storage. I'm calling to discuss your payment to us?"
"Oh?"
"You are two months behind on your rent to us and we're afraid to say that we cannot keep your container for you any longer if we do not recieve a payment."
"Oh." John looked at the jar in which he was storing all the money he had found around the flat. The notes were countable on one hand. "I don't think there's much chance of that I'm afraid," he said apologetically.
"I'm so sorry! If you could clear out your container by the end of the week?". She sounded genuinely concerned.
"Yes, of course. What's the address again?"
"Er...certainly. 24, Walvern Way."
"Thank you, I'll be there tomorrow."
"We look forward to it. Goodbye."
"Bye."
The phone went dead and John put it down slowly. Would he get answers at last?
The next day, he headed to 24 Walvern Way. The place was huge and looked nothing more than a big warehouse. It was anything but welcoming, but John headed in anyway, nervously pushing the door open and stepping in. It was equally unwelcoming inside: a large, white room with nothing but a reception desk and a rather plain woman standing behind it.
"John Doe?" It was the woman from the phone.
"Yes?"
"If you'd like to accompany me to your container?"
John nodded slowly and began to follow her as she strode through a door. The way to his container was along many long, winding corridors. They all looked the same and John was very glad she was there with him to help him on his way. Finally, they stopped beside a nondescript door, marked 3229. Gently, she pushed it open.
John gasped. Inside the room were several people, yet they had a translucent quality to them. As if they were almost there, but not quite. They were all of different ages and had nothing apparent in common except for the fact that they were all in this container, which was apparently his.
"I'll give you some time to clear them out. You'll have to set up alternate storage I'm afraid."
John couldn't speak.
After a confusing couple of hours involving a long talk with the receptionist and a confusing bus ride home, John sat down to think about what he had learnt. They were his ghosts, or Yurei, from his past and he had paid to have them removed from his head. There were a lot of them. And now with storage not an option, he was saddled with them. Lucky he had a spare bedroom. Sitting on his sofa, he thought about his plight. These were all people from his past. They might know him. They might be able to tell him things. The bus ride had been spent in fearful silence and, given that they were now living with him, he figured he had to start sometime. Taking a deep breath, he walked towards the door and cautiously opened it.
Basically this is the story of how a guy remembers and goes into his past with people as he remembered them. His name is not John Doe. It'll be whatever one of you decide to make it. The others will all be people from his past. They interact with him mainly, but also eachother. I don't know how many I want as of yet, but we shall see the interest.
