Introduction

I can see her. She's there. She's right there. She's so close, and I can smell her. Why do I do this to myself? Why do I have to be near her all the time? I get no rest from it. Even when I'm here, and she's there, I ache for her. To touch her, and hold her, and own her. But she doesn't even look at me. She can't even see me. And when I'm resting at night, I ache for her more. I crave her, and she fuels my dreams and my nightmares. I can't eat, I can't sleep, I can't even watch the news. Not that I do any of those things anyway, but it's nice to have the option.

It's been two years, and one hundred and nine days since the first time I saw her. It's time though, I think, to take her. I have to have her. She'll resent me at first, but after, she'll love me. She has to love me, because I love her.

obΒ·sesΒ·sion [uhb-sesh-uhn]
noun
1. the domination of one's thoughts or feelings by a persistent idea, image, desire, etc.
2. the idea, image, desire, feeling, etc., itself.
3. the state of being obsessed.
4. the act of obsessing.

This roleplay takes place in an unnamed American town, between an ordinary young woman and a man. Sadie is an ordinary girl. She's eighteen, averagely intelligent, and average in appearances. She's nothing special. But there's something about her that the man can't help but fixate on. And this roleplay takes place in the house that he takes her in. One day, Sadie is at a friends party, and the next morning she wakes up in an unfamiliar house. There, she is the guest of the masked man who owns the mansion, but he never truly reveals himself to her. Not once does she get so much of a glimpse of his masked face. In this beautiful and majestic house, Sadie wants for nothing, except privacy, as she soon finds out that in this place, the Master can always see and hear her. On her first day there, after being given the choice to leave, and choosing to stay, Sadie is trapped.

The Beast, though undoubtedly a man, is a man of many sides. On the one hand, he is undeniably kind and gentle. He is very loving and intelligent, but that intelligence and that love are the source of his darker, crueler side, and that is the side that he can not hide. Remorseless, two faced, and cold, his love turns to obsession, and his intelligence becomes the sly wit that gets him what he wants. Having cast aside his true name, he is the only creature to remember his true identity, and to all others, they know him simply as The Shadow, or The Beast.

However, in the mansion, Sadie can't say that she is unhappy. She's given anything and everything she desires. The Master has given her a Butler. This Butler serves Sadie in anything she desires. It isn't long before Sadie starts to feel for her Butler, but there's one thing she doesn't know about him that links him irrevocably to the Master.

Where's the line between man and monster?

In this roleplay there will be two characters, Sadie, and The Master.

ImageIt was dark, as usual. It was always dark. And cold. Beneath her bruised body, the ground was of frigid stone and it was cruel against her shaking, naked body. In her nightmares, anything that could shield her was gone. In her nightmare, she was curled in a corner of a black room, a coarse blanket thrown carelessly over her blue body. This was how all of her nightmares started.

As usual, the echoing came first. The sounds of the words were incomprehensible, but the meaning behind them were clear. He was coming, and he was angry. She could hear the cracking of his knuckles, and the sounds of his heavy heeled boots ringing on the ground. His words were furious murmurings of hate and fury, malevolent and harsh. He was coming for her, and he knew that she knew it.

Impossibly, his shadow darkened the already darkened room. All light and hope was gone, and then there was only the pain. He screamed her name again and again. "Rosemary. Rosemary...Rosemary!" And each screeching bellow was accompanied with the sound of blows falling on bare skin. There was still no light. Not even the slightest hint of relief, and with each blow that struck her bare body, she convulsed. But she didn't cry out. Her shoulders shook and tears fell silently from her eyes, but not once did she protest or try to defend herself. Helplessly, devotedly, she lay there, and just accepted the abuse that was destined to be hers.

Sadie felt reality rush back, and it felt like a kick in the stomach. She gasped for breath, and rose her hands to fight off the father that she imagined above her, pinning her down, his fists striking her belly mercilessly. Moments passed, and as Sadie writhed restlessly, she slowly calmed. The tears continued to fell, and as they did, her gasping sobs finally became audible. She cried quietly, but not for long. She never cried for long.

Forcing her breath to slow and take control over herself again, Sadie looked up. The room was dark, but not completely. At the window, the heavy drapes shaded her from the slow, watery light of the moon. Sadie was swathed amid her blankets and pillows, reluctant to move and disturb the fragile peace that she had found here. It seemed it was still deep night, and dawn was still hours away.

It was then that Sadie remembered exactly where she was. Well, not exactly, but she knew the place. She knew that in a few hours her Butler would arrive, and help her dress. And then she would have a breakfast prepared by him, prepared to perfection, as usual. And then she might spend her day relaxing. She wasn't too sure. Sadie hadn't been here long - a mere three days, and she was adapting quickly to the lifestyle she could have here. At home, and she cringed inwardly at the thought, she was treated as a waste of space, but here...her life was comfortable. The thought was reassuring and it didn't take long before Sadie was drifting off to sleep again, and this time, her sleep was restful and dreamless.

Image Knocking softly on Sadie's door, Victor's fingers slowly slid down the door and he pressed his cheek against it. There his love rested on the other side of this door, and here he will be able to touch her after so long of a night without seeing her. A soft loving sigh escaped his lips.

'Oh my love. In my home now, after so long of wanting you here. you drove me mad my little bird. Trying to catch you and put you in my home that I made for you.' His smile grew and his eyes change slightly. It was a smile and look of a Beast, but that changed and slowly he opened the door, walking in with her morning tea. Placing it on her table near the balcony doors he smiles at her, seeing her sound asleep before him. Even her sleeping face was delightful.

He walked over to her and sat down at the edge of her bed. With a slight gentle touch to her cheek, he stroked it with his finger tips and the back of his fingers. "My Lady is beautiful enough, you don't need much more sleep." He smiled pulling his hand back from her face as best as he could. His eyes became gentle and loving.

The sight of her before him, laying there helplessly, had already excited him. Making him think thoughts he shouldn't, but how could he help it with her laying there like she was, open for him to just take freely.

Getting up from her bed once he saw her slowly waking. He turned and hid his face from her, preparing the tea with a strong glare of irritation in his brows. His glare was of nothing but a beast. He wanted her, to over take her to tie her up and never let her go, but he was her Butler right now, and he vowed he would never do so in this form.

He held up the cup that had herbs in it and smiled at her again. "Tea? It is freshly made. I picked it from the garden this morning."

Speaking of mornings he actually had leave soon. He might be a Butler, but he was also the owner of this house. He had work to do and people to see. And like Sadie, no one has seen his face, or thought they have seen his face. He would always have a mask on, but in some situations he would have someone fake him. So that him as a Butler could join in the conversation. It would work like this. He would wear a mask, while asking that someone to fake him wearing a mask just like his. While his Butler joins them. Simple proses and it has worked so far.

ImageAfter her nightmare, Sadie slept soundly. She made no noise, except for the sound of rustling sheets as she occasionally shifted on her soft mattress. Her breathing was light, and she slept well, and she didn't stir until she felt the lightest of touches against the side of her face. The hovering caress didn't wake her though. Instead, she unconsciously turned her head into the touch, mumbling softly and incoherently.

Sadie only awoke with the shift in weight on her mattress, as, unknown to her, her Butler rose and momentarily left her side. Sighing softly, she awoke gently, rolling onto her side to bury her face into her pillow, habitually reluctant to start the day. Even though she had been at Kondara Cella for three days now, it still took her a couple of moments in the morning to realize that she didn't live at home any more. The sweet scent of the pillows made her remember, and as soon as she did, she smiled. By now, Sadie had completely forgotten her nightmare, and her mood was swiftly brightening.

"Tea? It is freshly made. I picked it from the garden this morning"

The smooth, familiar voice of her Butler reached Sadie's ears and made her smile. She didn't know why, exactly, but the sound of his voice was just rather soothing. Pulling herself into a sitting position, Sadie sat on her bed, enthroned by the heaps of cushions supporting her back. Her bed head hair tumbled unrestrained around her face, and her eyes were bright and warm at the thought of tea. Bringing her knees up to her chest and wrapping her arms around them, Sadie looked at Victor and smiled sleepily.

She replied to him softly, self consciously bringing her blanket up around her chest, even though she was completely covered in her red silk pajamas. "Oh. Yes, please. Thank you"

Kicking her legs free of the various blankets and covers, Sadie moved to sit on the edge of the bed. Her bare feet barely touched the floor, and she looked tiny compared to the size of the bed that she had been given, but she couldn't complain at all.

"Oh. Yes, please. Thank you"

He listened as she rustled around in her bed. He put the tea in the kettle, letting it sit while it got ready. He stood tall as he reached up to the drapes pushing them open to let the sun shine in brightly, lighting up the room. Reaching to the door handles he pushed the balcony doors open to let all that morning fresh air clear the room.

Walking over to Sadie he took her hand helping her out of bed with a soft bow. "Good morning my lady." He smiled, flashing her his bright eyes every time he saw her. Walking her to the seat next to the table he helped her sit down and pulled out her brush. Letting her face the balcony as he began to run the brush through her soft hair.

In ways he treated her like a porcelain doll, fragile and easy to break. Other times he treated as if she the only one in the world. When he was done he rain his fingers through her soft silky hair and rested his hands at her shoulders. Bending down to rest his cheek against her hair, his voice was like the light morning that shined through. "That master that you have long waited for to see, might show up today."

Letting go of her he turned on his heel and walked over to her closet that had her dresses in it. He touched his chin with his arm crossed over his ribs, looking at each dress carefully. Front top to bottom he eyes landed on her silk red dress. He pulled it out and placed it over the bed.

"You will be accompanying him at the grand Kondara Cella, gathering. Your job is to stand by his side through the whole night. Do not leave no matter what." He pulled out a hair piece from his coat pocket and held it up to her. It had red rubies and diamonds in it. In shape of flowers. "You wont have to fret, I will be closer to you then you think. so take it easy." Victors eyes stared at her with absurdness deep within them. He patted his chest and smiled. "I am always here for you my lady."

Placing her hand in his, Sadie stepped out of bed, and blushed as she always did when he bowed to her and called her 'my lady'. His hand was warm in hers, and pleasant to touch, but she withdrew her own hand before she caused him any offense. It wasn't that she really needed help getting out of bed at all, in fact she had been doing it herself for almost sixteen years now. But the gesture was nice, and she appreciated it.

"Good morning, my lady"

His greetings made her smile as she reached forwards to take the cup of tea that he had expertly prepared for her. It was warm, and she enjoyed the feeling of the brisk morning air on her warm skin as she took a sip. Her eyes glinted with mischief as she replied. "Good morning, Victor. Thank you for the tea. It's lovely" Her voice was hushed, gentle, and completely at ease. She exhaled deeply, exhaling her contentment. She watched as he moved around behind her, and then she looked back out of the balcony. Feeling him behind her, she leaned back, almost resting her head against his body.

As Victor began to brush her hair, she gazed thoughtfully out of the window. The view was truly quite serene. Outside on the spotless balcony, two birds were perched, whistling their dawn chorus. The simple aesthetic beauty of the tiny creatures perched side by side made Sadie smile softly. Combined with the feeling of the tea spreading warmth in the core of her body, and the pleasurable feeling of her Butler gently brushing her hair, Sadie was suddenly filled with the desire to go outside, and she was just about to excuse herself when Victor's warm tone interrupted her thoughts. With his head next to hers, his breath tickled her ear and she shivered slightly.

"That master you have long waited to see, might show up today"

The surprise was evident on Sadie's face. She hadn't thought of her host yet this morning, but at the thought of her mysterious master, she felt something that wasn't quite apprehension, or excitement. She hadn't seen him since he had agree to let her stay, and shortly after that conversation, he had excused himself. He was a man surrounded by mystery and uncertainty, but she owed him a lot for allowing her to stay. Sadie decided that she would take the opportunity to thank him properly.

"You will be accompanying him at the grand Kondara Cella gathering. Your job is to stand by his side through the whole night. Do not leave no matter what. You wont have to fret, I will be closer to you then you think. so take it easy. I am always here for you my lady."

Suddenly faced with the idea of having to accompany him to a formal gathering made Sadie gasp softly. Despite the niceties of the morning, she knew very well that she could be coarse and unrefined at the best of times. Placed beside a man of high social standings, she prayed to whoever would listen that she wouldn't embarrass him. The thought of having to stay by his side for the entire night was also slightly daunting, but it was Victor's reassurances that soothed her.

Sadie finished off her tea and then rose from her chair. Smiling, she crossed to the bed and looked down on the dress that her Butler had selected. The gown was beautiful, made with lush red silk, the color or quality of which she had never even touched before. She took the hair piece from Victor, and looked down on it, and her eyes widened with surprise. "Victor, I don't know how to thank you," She said humbly, sitting on the bed beside the dress and looking up at him "Thank you so much, for all of this"

"My lady, do not thank me." He bowed and kneeled down before her. Softly he slid his fingers down her leg and lifted it up on his knee, pulling out a leg stocking that matched her skin tone. "The night is yours. It is mostly to welcome you to our home. And also to announce the grand party for the up coming event. The mast never misses a holiday, we are quiet known for them." He said nearly proudly.

His finger softly touched the back of her heel as he lifted her foot to slip on the leg stocking. He slowly pushed it up her leg, placing it gently against her skin at her upper leg so it would stick there and stay. His hands rested on her foot as he looked up at her with sad but gentle eyes. "My lady, do be careful at tonight's grad. Some of them men there can be very overwhelming when they see a pretty face. Stay close to the Master." The worry drowned his voice. He dropped his head to rest his cheek on her leg just under he knee.

"You can never trust the faces you see no matter where you go." He mumbled and lifted his head, pulling out the other stocking. He slipped this one on faster and rose to his feet gracefully. He turned on his heel again and showed her his back. His glare turned in his eyes and his brows showed it as he kneed down reaching inside the closet, pulling out a pair of red shoes to match the dress.

'I wonder what I would do to any of those goons who tried to touch her inappropriate.' The thought of even another man near her drove him mad with jealousy. To him he was hers. If he was to see her hurt, it would make him loose himself and all control. As much as Victor loved this woman he could never hurt her. Or at least he wont think he is hurting her. But even to himself she was new to him. Even though he always watched her and had to be around her, she was still knew. He never felt this way around anyone and wasn't sure how to handle this. And the only way to handle what you don't know how to handle is to lock them away in your viewing point of sight. Like her being under his roof, by his side, always in reaching distance.

His face went blank when he turned around, walking back over to Sadie as if his mind was else where. He placed the heels down next to her and stood in front of her. He remained quite as he reached over to grab her dress motioning her to stand with her arms lifted. Preparing the dress for her.

Sadie closed her eyes as she sat down, but abruptly opened them again when she felt Victor's hands on her legs, sliding down her calf. She gasped with surprise, but then smiled and shook her head. She really had to get used to this. His touch on her was slow, soft, respectful, and so different to what she was used to experiencing. It almost felt nice, even though she knew that it was strictly professional. Sadie listened to his words quietly, soothed as always by his touch and his voice.

She knew it was probably very wrong of her to take such pleasure in his company, but she couldn't help it. Despite his position, he was still good company. However, his warning shocked her. The fact that there might be men...interested in her shocked her, and instantly made her withdraw from his touch. Her face paled, and she turned her head aside as had become her habit. The idea he had given her surprised her with how strongly it affected her, and she withdrew quickly from the memories and emotions that hurt.

Sadie was then aware of his head resting by her knee, and impulsively reached down to touch the top of his head, as though for comfort. She sighed gently and nodded "I'll be careful. I promise. I wish you would be there though". Her voice trembled slightly, and she watched as the Butler went about putting the stockings on her. As he withdrew, Sadie stood at his gesture, and frowned.

Victor, when he turned back to her, had a strangely blank expression on his face. It surprised her, but then it seemed that this morning would be a morning full of surprises. "Is everything okay?" Sadie asked him gently, turning her back to him. Reaching up, she unbuttoned her red pajama shirt, and lifted her hands. The first time Victor had suggested dressing her, Sadie had been shocked and appalled at the thought, though now, it seemed almost normal.

She shivered a little as she presented her bare back to him, her slim, feminine form curving in front of him as she patiently, though shyly, waited for the dress.

Victors eyes smiled when she spoke up to, snapping his mind back into place. "Yes my lady forgive me."

"If you could hurry a bit, we haven't got much time before the guest arrive. And I have to let them all in, while you great them." He spoke as he went through the proses of dressing her.

The pressure of her back against his chest was warm and soft, she fit perfectly. As much as he wanted to just take her and throw the dress to the side, he held back and cleared his throat, taking a step back he lifted the dress up and slid it over her. Slowly he dropped it down her body, his eyes traced each and every one of her curves from behind.

He took her by the hips gently with his finger tips and spun her around to face him, taking the lace around her and tying it into a bow at her side hip. And with another step back he looked at her thinking. Reaching over and taking her hair he placed the sides over her shoulders and then put the hair piece on top of her head.

The thought of putting make up on her was appalling. She already looked stunning even without the dress. Shutting his eyes he lowered his body to his knees and picked up her hells. Waiting for her to sit again so he could finish.

"All you have to do is announce who you are and tell them that the Master will arrive during lunch. Some guest might not even show up until lunch so be prepared, My lady." He smiled up at her in a kind way. "You are in for a very busy day. Besides..." He looked at the shoe and touched the bow on it softly. "I am closer to you in there then you think, so you should be fine."

This was true what he said. Of course he would be closer to her than she though. He will be right next to her the whole time. Only with a moment of a break that she would have to handle on her own. Leaving him time to dress up for the part.

"Yes my lady forgive me. If you could hurry a bit, we haven't much time before the guest arrive. And I have to let them all in, while you greet them"

For a moment, Sadie felt the cloth of Victor's shirt warm against her back, and she made a visible effort not to lean back against him. As the soft cloth fell around her shoulders, she closed her eyes. It didn't occur to her that the butler may spare a glance at her body, elongated and raised as it was as she held her hands up for the dress. With the garment settled around her body, barely a moment passed before she felt his hands at her hips.

Turning to face him, Sadie softly replied as he tied the bow at her hip. "Of course. Sorry. I'm just a little nervous, is all. I don't know these people" Sadie fell silent as Victor arranged her hair, smiling at the familiar touch of his long fingers at her head. Sadie sat gently on the edge of the bed, looking down on Victor as he knelt before her.

It was a strangely attractive image, having this man on his knees in front of her. It was almost powerful, and yet Sadie was starkly aware that, if anything, he was more powerful than she was. Blushing, Sadie turned her head aside, and listened as Victor continued his instructions and reassurances.

"All you have to do is announce who you are and tell them that the Master will arrive during lunch. Some guest might not even show up until lunch so be prepared, My lady. You are in for a very busy day. Besides...I am closer to you in there then you think, so you should be fine."

Shakily, but now more calm, Sadie nodded and put her feet forward to allow Victor to place the heels on her feet. Before she had come here, Sadie had rarely worn heels, but now it seemed almost natural. Especially for the guest of Kondara Cella. Exhaling slowly, Sadie nodded. "You're right. Thank you, Victor. I appreciate it."

He nodded to her thanks and Victor placed a thin jell at the front of the heel so the pressure of her wearing the heel would be less on her toes. His finger curved around the back of her heel as he placed the heels on her, fixing the bow on each shoe. reaching inside the from pocket of his shirt he pulled out red silk ribbon, and did a tired it around her ankle like his signature, he tied it in a fancy way.

Slowly rising to his feet, he took Sadie by her hand and gracefully pulled her from the bed and a few steps forward. He touched her hip lightly with his finger tips to let her know he was about to spin her. And like that he did, she looked amazing. "Some say the dress fits the lady, but I think you fit the dress." He smiled and bowed, kissing her hand softly. "I wish you luck today." His eyes slowly looked from her hand and up her arm. They paused at her shoulder and then slowly went up her neck to across her lips and straight to her eyes.

His eyes whispered her name but his mouth never moved. He wanted to take her, to have her right now. He knew if he stayed a butler for to long, he would loose himself right here and now. Touching her was his drug, the more you do it the more you want. She though was more then just a drug or a toxic.

Stepping closer to her, with her hand still to his lips, he stood straight up nearly touching her with his body. His eyes remained close as he breathed her sent deeply in. A natural sweet smell came from her body, a smell that no perfume could burn out. When he opened his eyes, he stared at her with a different tone in them. It was almost seducing, lustfully wanting.

But he smiled and it quickly vanished. "It would seem we might have guest soon." He dropped her hand gentle and stepped back from her, heading for the door. "Come down soon." He spoke over his shoulder.

Walking away now was best for a situation like this. A line between Butler and Lady should never be crossed. Doing so he would have to be Master.

Sadie placed her hand in Victors and rose from the bed when he'd finished with her heels. She felt like she was completely covered in bows, from her hip, to her heels and her ankle, but she kind of liked it. Victor had put them on her, and like a collar, it reminded her that he would be close later on.

Rising from the bed again, Sadie passed close to the butler's body as he led her forwards. She smiled as he span her and the skirts of her dress lifted on the breeze. Her hair flew, clasped by the gorgeous hair piece, and for a moment, the jewels shone temptingly in the light of the morning sun. Sadie smiled brightly and laughed, coming to a halt. Her eyes were bright and excited, wide with amusement and affection for Victor. She grinned teasingly and ran her hands down her sides to straighten the unsettled fabric of the dress.

"Some say the dress fits the lady, but I think you for the dress. I wish you luck today"

Sadie smiled softly, and replied in a low, almost uncertain tone. "That's sweet of you, Victor. Very eloquent" She murmured, watching him as he looked at her. His gaze was almost a physical feeling in its intensity. It was hot and cold all at the same time, and Sadie wasn't sure what that meant. It almost seemed that time itself slowed just for this moment, and as he looked at her, Sadie began to feel very exposed. As his violet eyes shifted to hers, though, her doubts and uncertainties retreated hastily. In his gaze was a longing, a sense of ownership and of desire. It burned coldly, and Sadie felt something inside her leap in recognition. Color rose to her cheeks as shy shyly lowered gaze. For a single second, Sadie considered what it would be like to kiss him.

Almost like a shift of gravity, Sadie felt as well as saw Victor take a step closer to her, almost closing the quickly dwindling gap between their two bodies. He was suddenly a very physical being, so close that if she were to take a deep breath, they would touch. But for now, that distance between them could have been a thousand miles His eyes were closed, and she knew that all she had to do was lean forwards and let her lips brush his, and he wouldn't know. He was so close that she could smell his masculine scent, and it was intoxicating. His hand on her hip was firm, and for a moment, Sadie wasn't sure if she was being pushed away or held in place.

Abruptly, the moment was over, and Sadie remembered to breathe as the butler looked at her and smiled. She exhaled slowly, and smiled, shaking her head slightly. As a child, her imagination had often run away with her. It seemed that even now she hadn't outgrown that tendency. "It would seem we might have guests soon. Come down soon"

And with that, Victor stepped away and left. Sadie nodded and didn't stay long. Taking a deep breath, and letting herself settle, it was only a few minutes later when Sadie left her room as well, and went down to the hall where she would greet the guests.

Shortly after a half hour guest started to arrive. Victor greeted every guest, some even stopped to speak with him.

"My God Victor, you sure do age well my boy! It's been nearly 10 years since I seen you. You look so mature." A man with a top hat chuckled and patted Victor's arm since he was to short to get his shoulder.

"Yes Sir Duke." Victor bowed as the man laughed.

"Oh don't be so formal with me, Boy. We are practically family!" He patted Victor's back as they walked into the ball room fully.

"Certainly. Is there anything you and the Lady would like to drink?" Victor stood tall when he spoke clearly and properly. He did very well look like a Butler now.

"Some scotch me boy! Haha and some red wine for Cathy." Duke had a deep husky voice, good for a man of his well 60's.

"Very well." A slow bow and Victor left the room as the Duke and Cathy walked over to some other guest, starting a conversation.

Victor took Sadie by her arm softly making her follow him to the kitchen. "This was a surprise. I didn't think the Duke would be here. Make sure that he is happy and no one bothers him to much My Lady. It would be trouble if he was upset. Get him anything he likes." Victor served the drinks with a quick and graceful speed. Taking the cups into his hand he smiled at Sadie and leaned close. "This night might be fun. There is some lovely people that will arrive soon."

Sadie had been downstairs alone for a few minutes when Victor came down too. She smiled, reassured already just by seeing him there. At least she knew that if she messed up some social expectation, he would be able to rescue her. Sadie hadn't been there for long, but she had tried to do her part. She had approached the few strangers that arrived early, and introduced herself. She had then begged their patience for the master of the house to come down, relaying the message that he would be down for the midday meal. Then she had exchanged small talk, all the while smiling and nodding.

The ball room was beautiful. The grandly arching ceiling was decorated with gorgeous ivory birds of all shape and size, and bordered with elegant golden swirls that convoluted gracefully and outlined the branches that the beautiful birds perched upon. The multiple tiers of the chandelier that hung from the middle of the ceiling were laden full of fresh candles that lit the brilliant room. The paneled walls were of rich gold, with the western wall punctured by tall windows that stretched from ceiling to floor and allowed the radiant light of day to eliminate any shadow in the ball room. In the middle of the western wall was a set of glassy doors that were open, allowing a brisk summer breeze to freshen the room, and the guests the chance to enjoy the garden that was awash with the colors of hundreds of differently hued, perfectly cared for, roses. The eastern wall was host to half a dozen doors that opened out onto quieter sitting rooms for more private conversations. Along the back wall was a door to the kitchen, from which the intoxicating scent of cooked foods emanated. There was also buffet tables, set with small platters of food for the guests to snack on as they desired, and tables set for the guests to rest at. The middle of the room, like any ball room, was clear, inviting people to dance.

The high caliber of the people around her made Sadie feel somewhat inferior, and the vast room made her feel tiny. Each time she caught her reflection in the highly polished surface of a plate, or in the glass of a window, Sadie didn't recognize herself. She not only looked her own age, but she looked good. The red of the gown and the lush material of the dress made a gentle swishing sound with each step she took, and the heels clicked gently on the shiny floor. The experience was completely overwhelming, and a low blush was present on her cheeks at all times from the attention that the guests gave her. And yet, somehow, Sadie felt herself settling into the life.

All the while, Sadie kept glancing over at Victor. Unlike herself, he was completely comfortable here among the guests. He swanned among them with all the grace and charm of a man who felt nothing but professional confidence around the various nobility that were mingling with each other. There was an easy, but restrained smile on his lips, and a glint in his eye. It wasn't that Sadie stared - it was just that she glanced occasionally. If she had been watching him, then he wouldn't have surprised her when he moved silently behind her and took her elbow, and gestured for her to join him in the kitchens.

Sadie nodded and excused herself from the dull conversation she had been having with an elderly gentleman who had a fascination with the various health benefits of citrus fruits. She did her relief that Victor rescued her, and followed him into the kitchen, where it was quieter than the ball room. She smiled at Victor, and leaned against a surface as she listened to him.

"This was a surprise. I didn't think the Duke would be here. Make sure that he is happy and no one bothers him to much My Lady. It would be trouble if he was upset. Get him anything he likes," Sadie nodded, remembering the man that Victor had been talking to just before coming to her side. And then, as Victor took the drinks and leaned closer to speak to her, Sadie had a single, irrational moment just like the one she had experienced earlier in her room with the butler. Ignoring the sudden dizziness, Sadie listened to Victor with forced concentration. "This night might be fun. There is some lovely people that will arrive soon."

Sadie nodded and smiled, taking one of the drinks from Victor as she replied. "I'll see that the Duke receives anything he desires," she promised, "It hasn't been as bad as I thought it would be," she admitted with a bright, teasing smile, "I'm almost having fun. Will the master arrive soon? Only, some of the guests were asking after him"
