Introduction
Cape Canterbury is a relatively small town in the Florida everglades. The insular population boasts of a proud European ancestry, and fosters a very strict culture. They are a very religious community, belonging to the "Old Catholics" (ie, extremely traditional, conservative Catholics who have broken away from communion with Rome), and very much look down on practicers of other or no religion.
Toby is the son of a prominent man of the town whom everybody respects, and so, of course, much is expected of Toby in every way. He always lives in his father's shadow.
When Toby is aged 10, a travelling community settles in the district known as "Kinzie Cove", on the border of the wetlands nearby. It is a poorer district on the bayou, many of the families live in boat-houses, and they are subject to the constant danger of mosquitoes and alligators. However, they are not 'hillbillies' or unsophisticated roughnecks, they are a well developed community with many skills and a diverse melting pot of cultures. Some of them practice various forms of 'magic', but they are a friendly crowd who celebrate their differences and welcome anyone and everyone.
However, the residents and government of Cape Canterbury are repulsed by these 'heathen vagrants', and treat them with hostility and contempt, making them feel as unwelcome as possible and effectively indirectly forcing their part of town to become a sort of 'ghetto'.
One day whilst wandering away from the oppression of his strict home life, Toby is playing near the wetlands and meets a 7 year old girl, Jessica, who is from the Kinzie Cove community. They become friends, and Toby visits her and her family often for several months. He knows that his father would be furious if he found out, so even though the girl's family welcome him into their home, he himself keeps the visits a secret.
In the end, of course, Toby's father finds out. His reaction is even more severe that Toby could have feared. He insights the town to outright hatred of the Kinzie Cove folk, and pretty soon there are outbreaks of violence against them. It culminates when a bomb is detonated in Kinzie Cove, which kills the girl's brother and uncle. The incident causes the residents of Kinzie Cove to reluctantly decide to move on for their own safety, and the residents of Cape Canterbury believe they have won a victory in ridding their town of those filthy gypsies.
Ten years pass. Toby's parents ensure their son is never confronted with impure distractions by forcing him to be involved in the Church, at first as an altar boy, then as a lay reader, and in the end as a seminarian (ie, a priest in training).
However, agaist all expectation, the community from ten years ago returns to Kinzie Cove, and this time there are even more of them than before. And they are no longer warm and friendly, they have not forgotten the treatment they recieved ten years ago. They are willing to co-exist with the residents of Cape Canterbury, but there is no love lost between them, and they believe Kinzie Cove is their rightful home which they were forced out of.
The story begins on the morning of the communities return to Kinzie Cove. How will the people of Cape Canterbury react to their new neighbours? Will there be fresh hostility and even violence? Can they learn to live in peace and tolerance? And most of all, what will happen when Toby, now aged twenty, discovers that among the returning travellers is the little girl he befriended - Jessica - who is now a beautiful seventeen year old?

“Carl....Trevis?” he said. “I guess not thinking about it too much will stop me from picking something too suspicious!”
As he laughed he regarded her move a little closer. He shifted his weight to lean towards her slightly, putting his weight on his arm. It was ludicrous how easy and comfortable he felt with her. The object of their scheme was so that he could spend time among the people of Kinzie Cove...but it was the idea of getting to know Jessica afresh which made him wish that the whole affair didn’t require so much cloak-and-dagger.
“A retreat!” he suddenly blurted out. “I’ll tell may parents I’m going on a pastoral retreat! It’s sort of like band-camp for priests, it’s something I have to do as part of my training, but it’s something my father has no say in. So he’d be none the wiser!”
He clapped his hands together triumphantly. “It’ll just take a day for me to sow the seeds. You think tomorrow’s too soon for me to come down to Kinzie Cove with you?”
As he placed his hand back down his fingers inadvertently overlapped Jessica’s...

"I think that would be a perfect time for you to come. But you'll need to make sure your dad and mom are convinced that you are going on the retreat and you can't get caught." she said, smiling at him. Then she felt his hand down on her hand and she blushed brightly, looking down at their hands and she giggled a bit before looking away from him...
But she didn't move her hand...

"It's weird," he said, through an awkward chuckle, "I thought I'd forgotten what it was like when we were younger, but being here now seems a lot like being down in the bayou. Do you remember it well? I remember it felt so exciting just being out of the town and away from all the rules and regulations...I guess ever since then you've always represented that sense of freedom I felt then. I mean...it was a lifetime ago, and I'm sure we've both changed a lot in that time, but it's only now your here again I realise how much I've missed you."
He looked over at her, blushing a little about candid he was being and hoping that he didn't sound too silly.

"I've missed you too, Toby..." She looked over at him, her eyes gleaming as she smiled.

But suddenly there was a sound from somewhere not so far away, and some levitous voices of a middle aged couple coming this way. He didn't recognise the voices as such, but it was highly likely that they'd know who he was if they saw him. He straightened up, his face flushed a deep red. He'd need to recover his normal colour before they arrived!
He chuckled awkwardly and looked across at Jessica, trying desperately to pretend that he hadn't just almost tried to kiss her.
"And now it seems like time travels a bit too quickly." he said with a slight wobble and stammer. "I guess we should get going before this place gets busy. I'll have to work my magic with the folks if we're going to make this happen. But...I really think this could make a difference. I certainly hope so."

"Text me and tell me how it goes with your parents. I'll have to convince my cousin I was out hiking or something. He gets skeptical... but I hope things work out. I think you'd like Kinzie Cove." she said with a smile at him.

When she mentioned her cousin again, it suddenly occured to him...was that the guy who'd approached them in town yesterday? In which case there was only so much pretending they could do; her cousin already knew that he was a boy Jessica had met in town. So that was the story they'd have to go with. They'd have to make it convincing...
"I will," he said, "it should work, my dad's so preoccupied with stuff at the moment he might barely even notice I've gone but we'll use that to our advantage."
He twisted his head around; the people approaching were almost upon them.
"OK well take care," he said, stepping in and giving her a brief but warm hug, "I'll let you know what's happening. I hope it works too...this could be really great. See you later Jessica."
He smiled broadly before turning and hurrying away down the path, passing a middle-age couple who greeted him cordially, no doubt recognising him from church. He smiled back at them, and made his way home.

He hurried up to his room and opened the college directory, to look for a plausible location where we would be ‘on retreat’...

Keir was varnishing the wood surfaces of the store front when he saw Jessica coming along the path looking decided cheerful. He suppressed a crooked grin. What could she be so happy about?
“Hey Jess!” he called out. “Been checking out the area? Maybe you remember which parts of the bayou are safest from ‘gators? That’ll come in useful. Whereabouts you been?”

"Well," he said with a grin, "maybe next time you can take some of the others, show them the good spots. That is, so long as you don't have any secret hidey-holes already you don't want us to know about."
He winked at her teasingly and turned back to the shop.
"Yeah work, work and more work." he said. "It's coming along well though. Pretty soon we'll hardly need to journey into town at all. That'll be less hassle, eh?"

"Ha. Well hopefully we'll be done soon. Work isn't fun." she said with a laugh and turned, walking away and towards her boathouse.

Pausing to silently catch his breath, he waited a little longer. Eventuallty, his mother walked into the kitchen and started opening cupboards. So far, so good...
From the top of the stairs, Toby walked down, this time making no effort to be quiet, and ambled through into the kitchen.
"Hey mom." he said.
"Oh his Toby!" his mother replied, "Thanks for picking all that stuff up for me, that was a big help."
"No problem." Toby smiled. "I had to grab some stuff for tomorrow anyway, will probably get straight on with packing now."
"Tomorrow?" his mother queried, looking across at him with a puzzled look. Toby stared back at her blankly, and after a moment turned his eyes towards the calender. Her eyes followed, and she wandered over to look, reading the entry. "Oh your retreat! My goodness I had no idea that was tomorrow! How did I miss that...anyway that's fantastic! You need me to put anything together for you?"
"No thanks." Toby replied, delighted that the trick had worked. "You know how it is, you travel light for these things, practice austerity and all that jazz."
"Indeed. Quite. Well, wonderful! I'll be sure to cook a special meal tonight, just to keep you going on those starvation rations they'll give you at the monestary. Austerity's all very well, but there's nothing to say you can't go in prepared right?"
"Thanks mom." Toby laughed, heading back upstairs and pulling his phone out, rattling a text off to Jessica.
Hook, line and sinker. We're good to go for tomorrow.

"I was taking a long walk through the woods. I wanted to visit places I used to play with my old friend, Toby. It was quite alot of fun. I enjoyed the fresh air and the veiws. I even saw some woodland creatures too." she said with a smile as she looked calm and happy. She smelled the bacon and eggs that made her smile happily. They smelled so good; she was excited to eat it. Even if it was a late breakfast. Jessica pulled out the newspaper, reading into it with a calm sigh.

“Well they’re definitely here to stay.” He grumbled. “Damn they’ve completely restored the old general store! They’re not even just keeping themselves on the water.”
“I don’t think anyone expected them to.” The other man said. “They’d not on a camping holiday, they’re trying to make a home for themselves.”
“Yeah fine, but who’d have thought that bunch of gypsies could put that matchbox town back together so quickly.”
“Determination.” The second man said, “Determination and spirit. But don’t worry, we’ll soon break that.”
“What do you mean?”
“Working against adversity is one thing. But when you see your precious progress being knocked back as soon as you’ve made it, that’ll quickly sap at your morale.”
The first man was silent, looking once again through the binoculars. “I hope you’re right.”
“You’ll see,” the second man said. “Give it another week, and they’ll realise that this place will never be truly their home.”
“Alright. Come on, let’s report back to Mongomery.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Toby looked at the bag he’d packed for himself. It was just a small rucksack, with a few changes of clothes and some basic essentials. Nobody would question the fact that he was taking so little; he was supposed to be going on a ‘retreat’, living with less and learning to be content with minimum stuff. He wondered how Jessica was coming along preparing the ground for him to stay in Kinzie Cove. The people there would know he was from the Cape...but not who’s son he was. He wondered how they’d receive him. With a diplomatic dignity? Or with a vengeful hostility? Either way, it was his only real hope of making a difference in the relations between the two communities.
Downstairs, he heard his dad arrive home. On the clock it said it was almost 11 o’ clock at night. What had he been doing all day? He heard him storm straight into his bureau, and get on the phone and start shouting. Oh dear.
Toby lay back on his bed and sighed. He certainly did have his work cut out for him. After thirty minutes or so, he felt his eyes get heavy and sleep overtook him...
She closed her eyes then as sleep was invading her mind and she drifted off into her own dream land.
He was just finishing breakfast when he mother walked in on him, still in her dressing gown and curlers.
“Toby?” she said through a yawn. “Why so early?”
“Thought I’d best get some breakfast in me,” Toby said, keeping a modest smile, “probably the last time I’ll get bagels in the morning for a few days, right?”
“Oh of course! Well good for you dear. Tell you what I’ll brew up some coffee too. You need a ride anywhere?”
“No!” Toby blurted. “I mean...no thanks. There’s a minibus leaving from the church, I’ll just walk over and get that.”
He scurried back upstairs as his mother set about making coffee. Pulling out his phone he sent Jessica a text.
How about I meet you in the park again, same time as yesterday? We’ll go from there.
But her mom was already up cooking breakfast. "Hello sweetie. You're up early." her mother said, smiling at her.
Jessica leaned against the table and smiled back. "Yeah. Had a good sleep. Where's dad?"
"Off working on some buildings and plumbing, helping a few people with their boat houses too. He'll be back at lunch." her mom said. Jessica nodded and then she heard her phone buzz in her pocket and she pulled it out. She typed a reply to Toby.
Sure. Sounds good. I'll meet you there.
His hold-all was light, containing mostly clothes. He also had a couple of books; prayer books, not reading books - he had to make sure that it looked like he was actually going on a church retreat. Though he'd probably have to keep those hidden once he got to Kinzie Cove; wouldn't send the right message if anyone saw them.
He slipped his phone into his pocket and picked up speed, practically jogging into Covent Gardens. He had no idea exactly what would happen once he got down there. Where would he stay? And who with? He could only trust that Jessica had some idea because Toby hadn't been down to Kinzie Cove since those times ten years ago. He wondered what it was like now. From what he'd heard they'd been doing a lot of work down there.
Finding a discreet, shaded spot, he sat down on the grass and kept an eye out for Jessica.
"Hey. Sleep well?" she asked, tucking some of her hair behind her ear as she smiled at him.
