Pinea, a world that once brought an age of advancement is now ravaged by what we made out of pure greed.

Introduction

Children of the Scraps: Survival
Image

Welcome, Children of the Scrap, to Pinea, the glorious junkyard that we all live upon. Pinea has been used as a dumping ground for spaceships for nearly 5 galactic empires and only the most recent one has been human. Its already ruined atmosphere and ecosystem makes dumping ships and other metals and dangerous materials regretless and brings countless scavengers to its crust.

Image
Humans:

When first rising out from their core system, humans were in search of both new technologies and materials to improve their weak ships. Pinea, being within a few short jumps of the humans’ home system, became the source of materials and technologies that humanity needed. The vast number of alien ships and systems for reverse engineering and the countless scrap-able hulls turned this planet into a huge corporate interest. However, as with all corporate interests, Pinea was doomed to fail.

Greed. Greed was the final failing that brought Pinea to the state that it is today. The corporations that once threw volleys of humans at the planet and funded countless bubble cities eventually decided that humans were too costly. With the advancement brought by Pinea robots became common technologies. Early on they were easy to control with simple verbal commands and were limited in exactly what they could do, but they allowed one person to have ten people’s worth of work done in the same amount of time.

Image
Thinkers and Drones:

At first it was a gentle incline as smarter ‘Thinkers’ were created to allow one human to do more people’s worth of work. Eventually the first fully autonomous robotic scavenger was released onto Pinea. With the same limitations as the humans when it came to tools, these early Thinkers were still obedient and controllable. It was not a luxury that would last forever.

What pushed everything over the edge was when the first ‘Commander’ was built. Eventually the corporations began to disagree, and with that came the technologies of war and the horrors they bring. The defining tool of war was the Active Construction Technologies System (or ACTS) which was a system for deploying self-reproducing nanites that could change the very atomic structure of the materials they gathered as well as be launched like a spray and build preloaded plans.

ACTS allowed both Commanders and Thinkers to set up far more advanced construction in the Scrap Fields of Pinea. Military bases, distribution centers, and scavenger bases began popping up all over the surface. The Commanders and Thinkers then began to adapt ACTS into factories that built modifications on the service drones that humans had already had for nearly two centuries. ACTS also allowed simple matter mines to take the place of more advanced materials gathering.

Image
The War:

One day, the day no one was prepared for it, several of the Commanders went rouge. The first sign was when the Gehanna Corporation Scrap Retrieval Headquarters was destroyed by artillery fire. That was when the humans realized the had gone too far. Early on, most of the peaceful scavenger Thinkers aided in the human’s defense, eventually giving them a slight technological advantage.

As time went on, the scavenger Thinkers were hunted down by the Commanders. While the Thinkers were able to produce a greater volume of materials quicker, the Commanders’ ability to produce better military units quickly overwhelmed a majority of the Thinkers. Even as this happened, neutral groups of Thinkers and Commanders chose to not involve themselves with a side in the conflict.

This neutrality proved to be their undoing. Without any form of unity, all these neutral machines were easy pickings when the humans influence started to diminish. The untapped resources the neutrals guarded were often the target of Commander attacks or human trade attempts. Many times, this would result with them being destroyed by the overzealous Commanders.

Image
The Current Times:

The War has been going on for 5 years now. Most of the once great human bubble cities have become either Commander fortresses or ruins scrapped for all usable materials. Only three known cities remain: Shiny York, Waylin, and Pyk.

Shiny York was one of the first military bases set up by the corporations. The outside of it is covered in defenses from laser and railgun turrets to anti-ship weapons to their crown jewel, a non-physical barrier system. The only one to have successfully worked, this system has helped keep the city from damage in countless battles and serves to make Shiny York a constant target of power-hungry Commanders. It is in near perfect condition within the city and has the most advanced human military.

Waylin was built at a cross-roads for no other purpose than to act as a storage facility. Now, however, the massive warehouses remain empty and act as extra living spaces and growing facilities. This gives Waylin the advantage of food and medicine when trading with both the other colonies and what organic scavengers have made their ways in the scrap fields. This city is fiercely defended by a mixture of fast moving laser cannons that destroy anything hostile and units from both the other cities they supply with food.

Pyk was the newest city when the War began. It was nothing more than a small scouting outpost, but its small size soon became its advantage. The Commanders paid little attention to Pyk during the majority of their fighting. As time went on, however, Pyk has expended down. With only guards and an entrance on the surface, Pyk is secured by layer after layer of destroyed ship that they have expanded into to try and survive.

While these cities each have their own reason for surviving, humans have survived because of some more universal reasons. The humans in general have better technology, allowing their foot soldiers to pose a credible threat to the machines and their defenses are able to fend off wave after wave of the enemy. While the machines adapt to new problems with old solutions, the humans have a way of introducing new ways of thinking to deal with these problems which lead to countless advances which have proved critical to making it this far. They also have the arrogance of the machines on their side, as of late. There is rumor that the Commanders have begun to wage war among themselves and that is why the attacks have slowed.

Even though the humans have the technological advantage, both the humans and Commanders are always looking to get their hands on whatever new science and technology lies hidden within the Scrap Fields.

Image
The Commanders:

Masters of war, these machines stand between 8 and 12 feet in height with integrated ACTS units. They have weapons that often rely on power rather than depleting their limited supply of mass and they specialize in creating military units. Nothing created by a Commander is defenseless, and because of this is more expensive and complex. They are very aggressive by nature and are used to being in complete control because of their drones. Science to them is practical and rarely do they research anything without cause.

Commanders are difficult to kill and normally arrow-like in shape to help with deflecting attacks. They typically have two light weapons and a heavy weapon as well as enough armor to bust into a military installation with only a handful of units. Commanders like to attack in waves.

Image
The Thinkers and Scavengers:

Masters of turning the Scrap Fields into usable facilities, these machines stand between 7 and 10 feet tall with optimized ACTS units. Their weapons almost always draw from the massive mass reserves that are standard. Most structures and units created by Thinkers are cheap, easy to mass produce, and serving a specific purpose. However, anything that involves gathering, transporting, and using mass are well beyond the capacity of what Commanders’ units could do. Overall Thinkers are calm, cool, and collected with a focus on gathering mass and using it as efficiently as possible. Science to Thinkers is the Holy Grail, and any discovery warrants research into what it could possibly do.

Thinkers are typically rounded in shape to help their hulls handle the force applied by collapsed scrap. They typically have only one medium sized weapon that gives them a balance between fighting everything and just enough armor to allow them to retreat behind walls of units. Thinkers like to keep attacks constant and prefer to weaken an enemy’s supply line then whittle them down.

Pinea lay quiet for several days. The attacks on the human cities had reduced for some odd reason and those out in the Scrap Fields found significantly less resistance. However, everyone knew that they were in the eye of the storm, but they didn't realize exactly what storm was coming. That was when it happened.

Two Commanders, one painted red and the other painted blue, began to wage war from their two bases. The fight lasted for several days and began to alter the landscape of the Scrap Fields as the mix of stray attacks from combat and mass mining weakened the area where the two Commanders fought. On the final day it finally took its toll. The fields beneath the Commanders bases collapsed as they began launching volley after volley of missiles at each other.

Since the battle, Commander attacks have returned to normal. Any time that a Commander of each color is attacking a target the Commanders will begin assaulting the other. There have even been supposed sightings of Commanders that have painted themselves yellow, though no one knows what this could mean.

For most of the cities the break in the fighting allowed them to get some much needed breathing room. All of them took the few days they had to repair and expand as much as they could to try and prepare for the wave that came after the two Commanders finished their fight.

Character: ASRU
Location: The Quuwnin, Second Layer of the Scrap Fields

The Quuwnin revival project was given up long ago. Without the help of the humans ARSU simply did not have the part or schematics required to fully revive ancient ships. Turning them into bases where he could operate and explore, on the other hand, was simple. Not quick, but simple. The cargo bay quickly became a factory, pumping out a mix of Drones and their variants.

The rest of the ship had to be re-arranged to accommodate what had to move through the halls. The airlocks on the side of the Quuwnin had been remade into bridges to the other nearby wrecks to allow for better mass mining without risking the integrity of the main base. Within the remaining halls scurried countless Crawlers as they patrolled the Quuwnin.

Just a few feet from the entrance ASRU was busy constructing a Mass Turret while four sprayers formed a constant supply of mass for him. The entrance ran to another ship that extended all the way from the surface down to the second layer down with a light enough incline for a human to walk up and down it with ease. It would still be a walk.

Jace
Location: Layer 21 of Scrap Fields

Jace had been digging for a couple days now to get this far down, he was one of the few humans brave, or dumb, enough to venture this deep. He looked around as best as he could, it was dark and the light he had only shone so far, he seemed to be inside a ship as far as he could tell. He had his staff ready to be quickly grabbed prepared for any unsuspected danger. All that could be heard was his foot steps echoing from the creaking metal and his mechanical breathing, just what he liked. He felt safe around this kind of danger, down here any harm you came to was either your own fault or, with the proper precautions, you could save yourself.

As he explored the ship Jace thought he saw something flashing. I wonder what that could be. he thought to himself as he walked closer to it to discover what it was. Just as he was about the get the item into his lights he heard a creaking he did not like and went to grab his staff the "ground" under him gave way and Jace started to fall. Luckily the hole he created was small enough that he was able to use his staff to keep from falling, and probably breaking at least one leg.

Jace dangled from his staff for a bit cursing himself for not being more careful before finally pulling himself back up, using his robotic hand to grab the ledge to prevent himself from getting cut. Once out of the hole he decided to walk around, as to avoid any other weak spots. Once he was able to get what he saw within his light he found what looked like a communication device only a bit larger and older than what he had seen before and possibly one of the weirdest things was it had a small red light that was slowly and faintly blinking.

"This could possibly get me something nice." Jace said to himself as he tried to pick it up, only to find it attached to the floor. After a good half hour with a cutting torch Jace got the device free trying his best trying not to break any wires, a very hard task. Once it was lose he wedged it into his backpack, sadly it was the only thing that would fit. "Well time to go see what this is worth." he said to himself as he walked over to the rope he had dangling down and started the climb up.

As the burning sun rained its brand of hell fire down on the scrap fields below, the abnormal and unnerving silence continued to hold. It seemed as if the fighting was moving farther and farther away, but many believed that it wasn't. That they were just in the eye of the storm. As of yet, no one is sure whether or not this is true.

In the pack of Jace glowed a small red light. A small red light that would soon choose who ruled Pinea. What looked as though a simple communications device was far more than that. A crucial mix of FTL comms and sensors that had won the ship it rested in many battles. Even absolute knowledge of the battlefield can't save one from six ships of the same class attacking all at once.

Character: ASRU
Location: The Quuwnin, Second Layer of the Scrap Fields

ASRU soon found his little project complete. The base he had made out of the ship was now safe enough, further than he had ever made it before. The calm was definitely something that ASRU could get used to, but he had this feeling that it wouldn't be that simple. No, simple wasn't how Pinea worked. Even ASRU was old enough to know that.

Jace
Location: Scrap fields

Jace walked through the fields to what many called Scrap City, a city that laid around 3 layers under the surface and the place Jace called home. As he walked through the waist he couldn't wait to get home and discover what he had in his pack, and even discover how much it was worth. He walked what felt like hours and by the time he started to be able to see the watch towers that had been created to help protect Scrap City from attacks it was starting to get dark. Jace was one of the few inhabitants of the city that was never bothered by the guards, since almost all of them knew him since he was always coming and going. Jace stood at the base and looked up at the two towers that stood on either side of the entrance of Scrap City and he suddenly got a chill that went down his spine along with the feeling he may not see the towers for a long while. Currently there was a calm going on in the war but Jace couldn't help but feel like it was going to take more from him, the stupid war that had already taken his arm, his family, and any chance of him knowing who he really was could it really take anymore away from him?

As the day grew quiet, the peace that many had enjoyed, and many not, was coming to a close. The curtain of night came down as it always did, but the sounds of marching could be heard across the Scrap Fields. Near the place known as Scrap City a small beacon was broadcasting with only a few capable of determining that it was doing so: ASRU, Red Commander 441, and the city of Shiny York.

As they received the empty broadcast, everyone mobilized to track its unknown source. The first on the scene, to the dismay of the people of Scrap City, was to be the Red Commanders at dawn, their armies ready to burn down anything in their path.

Character: ASRU
Location: The Quuwnin, Second Layer of the Scrap Fields

The static on FTL frequency 331f2 was beginning to annoy ASRU, as it was interfering with controlling his long range unit. In truth, the Thinker was not fond of using his FTL comms systems as they took up a great deal more processing than he was comfortable with, but long range units required control that standard radio just had too much interference and lag time to really handle that long range of units.

Then the data began to flow. Sensor data of an unknown encryption and driver set, but guessing by the volume and repeat speed of the data flow there was quite a bit of information to work with. Quickly this was becoming more and more interesting, and if ASRU knew one thing, it was that if you detect something interesting on this planet you have to take it quickly.

Soon all the units that the Thinker could spare were emerging from the entrance into his palace, riding in Haulers. Hopefully there was enough to grab and go while everyone else was beginning to fight.

Sorry about having been away from the RP for a while. Brat has no internet, so I haven't been checking this RP as much as I should have been. Feel free to post your intro while we wait for him to get his internet back.

Re: Children of the Scraps: Survival

Oh, okay, sounds good! Thanks~

Re: Children of the Scraps: Survival

I would actually encourage humans as compared to robotic characters. I just chose that for mine to add a different perspective to the story.

Re: Children of the Scraps: Survival

hello! I've recently found this roleplay, and became interested. I just have a couple questions before I get started...

Is it okay to make human characters? Or do they have to be robotic type things? Just wondering...
