Mind/Matter: Psychic Training

Mind/Matter: Psychic Training

0 INK

The APD Training Facility was founded to teach young people with the rare Psychic mutation to use their abilities for good. As new trainees arrive, they are going to have to hit the ground running.

Introduction

Image

Roughly twenty years have passed since the founding of the APD, Advanced Psychic Division. They were responsible for apprehending criminals, keeping the peace, and aiding society.
They could stop armed criminals in moments without even breaking a sweat. They carried no weapons, wore no protection....they didn't even carry radios. This was because, when you were an APD operative, your main weapon, your only weapon, was your mind. APD operatives were all one of the few people in thousands that were born with psychic abilities. Regarded with fear an revulsion among normal folk, the APD offered psychic youngsters the opportunity to become famous and respected, to triumph in a society that had rejected them as freaks...and many were desperate to sign up to the APD's Psychic Training Facility Boot Camp, situted in the wooded mountains above thr small city of Westwood.Students would arrive s, and be trained and tested to their limits, emerging as tough, smart psychic operatives.

The students were divided into two broad categories, Paths and Kinetics, each with different specialties.

Generally speaking, all trainees had some skill at each, but their skill showed for one particularly. Paths waged their battles in the mind of their opponent. They would enter the person's mental landscape, and use their abilities to manipulate, gain information from, or incapacitate the mind. While the most skilled Paths could do this within a minute, when entering another's mind, they would go into a trance, leaving them open to physical attack. This was where the other psychic came in the Kinetics. A Kinetic was able to manipulate physical matter with their minds, throw it, catch it, even break it. They were trained to protect Paths while the paths were working, and in return the Paths would prevent mental attacks on the Kinetics. It was a symbiotic partnership that made both well protected.

There was also a third type of student however, one few people mentioned. They were known as Splitters. Splitters were uncommon individuals, whose abilities were present, but they had no means in which to control them, they would switch on and off, seemingly at random..and when they did activate, they could damage both property, and the minds of others. To prevent such a thing, Splitters were required to wear inhibitor bands, metallic headband-like devices that siphoned off the excess psychic energy and stopped them inadvertently hurting anybody.

A new year was beginning at the Psychic Training Facility, and they were accepting a bunch of new trainees..however, dark plots were stirring, and soon the students would be tested to their limits...where a passing grade would be the only option.

Psychics

Psychics are the result of a genetic mutation that has resulted in drastic change in the brain structure, something that allows them to enhance and project the electro-magnetic energy that would normally be present in a human brain. Psychics tend to resemble ordinary people, though from time to time there are other minor physical quirks associated with their genes. Albinism, greying of the hair from birth, heterochromia, and unusual eye colours are all present in greater numbers among physics.

Powers often first begin to manifest at puberty, though for some can appear much earlier. Kinetic abilities may be far easier to pick up on initially, due to their effect on the outside world, but Path abilities can also be detected by very vivid daydreams, or sharing the same dreams as family members. It is common from uncontrolled Pathic abilities to send the user into the dreams of others while they sleep.

Psychic powers are uncommon, and often regarded with suspicion by others. While the 'Genetic Discrimination Act', passed five years prior, prevents keeps open prejudice against Psychics at a low level, many are threatened by their presence and avoid them for fear of having their minds altered. The APD actively attempt to counteract those attitudes, though can only do so much.

The Mindscape

Image

A term that all Psychics come to know very well. The Mindscape is a term used to refer to the worlds within the minds of others. It is a way in which a Psychic's brain interprets the inside of a person's mind in a way that they can interact with it. Paths primarily use the Mindscape for what they do, but Kinetics are expected to familiarize themselves as well, in case of emergencies.

Each Mindscape is unique to the person, and all aspects reflect the personality, memory, and thoughts of the individual whose mind it is. A mountain climber, for example, may have an enormous mountain range as their Mindscape, populated with memories, dreams, and concerns.

While many Mindscapes are quite beautiful, they are also extremely dangerous. Fears, nightmares, inner demons and dark memories can be extremely harmful towards Psychics, and the more troubled the person, the more hazardous their mind tends to be. At bes,t harm inflicted on a Psychic while they're inside the Mindscape can result in physical pain, or forced ejection from the mind in question, at worst it can cause serious and permanent damage to the Psychic's own brain.

The Camp

Image

The camp appears, on the surface to be a pleasant place, the buildings made to look as if made of wood, though the main ones, below the veneer are all concrete and metal. Several cabins dotted around are used to house the trainees. The accomodation is based on power and gender, with Paths closest to camp, and Splitters out on the edge of the woods. Accommodation is a group affair, with all sleeping on the two long rows of beds that sit in individual slots in the walls, to allow for some privacy. Males and females are divided.

The main buildings are the research block, off limits to students without a permit or accompanied, the refectory and common rooms block, and the classroom block.

First day.

Well, first day of classes at any rate....and that was generally the first day that she took a great deal of interest in the affairs of the student population. Unpacking and settling into the cabins was something the practical staff were apt to handle. She was an academic....well...perhaps academic wasn't the right word exactly...she was an expert, at any rate.

Miss Penn sat in her office, rolling up a large diagram of the human brain with her gloved hands. Not long to go until she took the first class of the first day 'Introduction to the Mental Landscape'. It was a class involving the new arrivals, Paths, Kinetics and Splitters alike, so tended to be quite interesting...or completely chaotic. The power classes were liable to bicker much of the time...but segregated classes were no good. Eventually the Paths and Kinetics would have to team up to work, so there was no reason why they should not start working upon their arrival.

The instructor rose to her feet, zipping her materials into a bag.

Saeth was a distinctive individual, even at first glance. Her hair, thick and silvery grey in colour, was cut into a neat bob, framing her face. Her skin was a very pale colour, almost white....and did not tend to get along with the sun. It was her eyes that tended to attract the most attention...and unnerve people the most comprehensively. It was a calling card of sorts, and not something that she was in the least bit shy about.

The woman was dressed in a black turtleneck, the badge of an APD agent pinned to one side, the stylized outline of a human head with three bolts issuing from it. She tended to have it on her person, whether out of nostalgia....or as an opportunity to show off...it was unclear.

Introduction to the Mental Landscape. It would be there that the trainees really sank or swam. They had a high dropout rate, and Miss Penn suspected that that was at least partially the reason for it. She had no intention to hold their hand or baby these young psychics. If anything they would be right in at the deep end. Today was going to be a bit of a field trip.

Re: Mind/Matter: Psychic Training

Just to let all the lovely folks on here know, I'll but putting up the first post within a couple of days. I stared a new job this week and am still getting into the swing of things.

Re: Mind/Matter: Psychic Training

Submitted a head instructor! I'll add in a picture once I have a few spare minutes.

Re: Mind/Matter: Psychic Training

Can I reserve a kinetic male?

Re: Mind/Matter: Psychic Training

Recruits are taken in as they're discovered, though the facility is for the younger psychics. So, students will generally be somewhere between thirteen and twenty.

Re: Mind/Matter: Psychic Training

Alright, thanks :). I was wondering, how old should the recruits be, they should all be around the same age or so, right? If so, what ages were you thinking?

Re: Mind/Matter: Psychic Training

Physical Training would seem like a good place for him. That would probably cover both athletic activity, and practical lessons like combat, surviving difficult situations, disarming attackers etc, things that do not require powers.

---

Path reverse is down for you SMinSC.

Re: Mind/Matter: Psychic Training

This seems like fun, can i reserve a path female, also?

Re: Mind/Matter: Psychic Training

Um, I don't know if I want to reserve a Secondary Path instructor or a Physical Training instructor. I wanted to make a character who was originally an Inspector in the Burglary Division, who for now is an instructor at the camp. He himself doesn't have any powers, but he has worked with people from the AP division many times before and has studied Paths deeply. He is very, I can't think of the word right now, but he is determined, and, patriotic for the lack of a better word. Especially determined to catch a certain jewel theft by the name of Kamen Diamonte.

Re: Mind/Matter: Psychic Training

Reserve down. =)

Psychonauts is a brilliant game btw. Haven't played it in a while.

Re: Mind/Matter: Psychic Training

This is like Psychonauts! :D

I'd like to reserve a Path Female please!
