Introduction

Beacon has been attacked by Grim.

It wasn't the first place to be, and before all was said and done, it wouldn't be the last. There had been reports of similar incidents across the world, but this one was particularly shocking, due to the location and the amount of damage done. That, and the perpetrator.

Strangely absent from the chaos was Ivy Elden, a generally well-liked second year student. In fact, almost no one has seen her since the very beginning of the attack, and that includes her team. After the smoke had cleared and Beacon had recovered enough for an investigation, it became very clear that there was a great deal of evidence stacked against Ivy: explosives had been used to breech several of the buildings, something which she had extensive knowledge of. Then there was the box of extra supplies hidden somewhat haphazardly among her things. What was most damning, however, was the testimony made by two separate teams who swore that they saw Ivy fiddling with explosives that later failed to detonate and, separately, luring Grim to the school. After her roommates were ruled out, it was only a matter of days before Ivy was named a wanted woman.

For some that had known her, something about the situation seemed too convenient, too obvious. Besides, what reason would she have to put people she cared about in danger? Now, a few of her friends are setting out to find both Ivy and the truth. However, these young hunters may have bitten off more than they can chew…

Also, a special thanks to DragonDunc, who was of great help in creating this.

Violet held her weapon tightly in her right hand as she wandered through the village. She, along with Death and Donnchad, had been searching for almost a week with hardly anything to show for it. This was the last lead that they could follow, but even then it wasn’t good: a large part of the town had been destroyed and there were clear signs that Grim had been there. There were plenty of signs of resistance as well. Shredded plant matter was decaying on torn up paving stones and other than the occasional rustling of small animals through the rubble and underbrush, there were hardly any signs of life. This had been something of a pattern so far.

Violet glanced over her shoulder at her companions before she ducked through a doorway into a more intact house. There was a great deal left inside, but no signs of injury. Hopefully that whoever lived there got away safely. She seated herself at a desk and began searching through the drawers, though deep down she didn't really believe that she'd find any clues.

Once Violet ducked inside the moderately intact house, Death glanced to Donnchad and loosed a sigh. "Well that might be another bust, going to check out the back forty." she told the shield toting huntsman. 'Not yet.' she mused as she felt the unwanted stirrings of tears. Moving swiftly around the back, Death needed time to recenter herself as the destruction of the village hit to close to her own memories of loss. Pausing at a fence post, scratched and a little charred, she shuts her gunmetal gaze to the world and took several deep breath to prevent the tears from falling.

Instinctively griping Charon's Rosario, as if to swing and lacerate an invisible foe, Death waits for the uncontrolled playback of her past to finally end before resuming the search. "Nothing will make me their victim ever again. Ever." she states firmly. After she regained her center, which took a few minutes, Death rapidly searched the area behind the house. 'Looks like they evacuating days before the grim arrived. Then again I could be reading the trail wrong and grim killed them before they reached any safe haven. Pulling out her scroll, a totally blacked number with her sister's favorite symbol on, she heard connect with Violet's and Donnchad's. "Found a trail heading away from the house. Think the owners might have began leaving before the grim came. But I am not a hundred percent on my interpretation though."

Donnchad edged into the village with the others, scanning the area around them. When he was satisfied that they indeed weren’t currently under attack from hordes of monsters, he loosed his grip on the sword sheathed on his back - he’d been clutching it since they’d got here, as usual.

As Violet entered one of the abandoned houses, Death turned to Donnchad and told him she was going round the other side to investigate. He started as if he were about to tell her to be careful splitting the team up, but thought better of it, and just nodded instead. “We’ll cover more ground this way.” He said to himself as he paced back toward the entrance to look for trails. If people had evacuated, they may have left through here.

That was when He received a phonecall informing him that there was some sort of trail leading away from behind the house. He set off immediately, striding to the area Death was checking.

Violet’s scroll gave a series of cheerful beeps. She snapped it open with a brief greeting, listening to Death’s message. “You’re probably right,” she said. “I'm coming.” It took a moment of searching before she found Death. There was nothing there beyond what she'd expect, just old human prints and the like. "Well, I guess somebody went this way. I dunno when."

Her fingers flexed around the grip of her weapon. "So, I guess we follow them." She opened up her scoll again and checked through a map that she had downloaded. "There is a town that way. It's a good a bet as any, right?" She glanced between her companions. "Any objections…?"

"We're trained to do a job and this is part of it. Plus it might lead to something that we use for our other mission." she states with a half shrug. Staring down the trail Death wondered if some other being was getting a laugh from this. 'Like they were care either way about mere mortals.' she mused silently. Shaking her head to clear it of any remaining thought not important at the moment, she broke into a light jog. Unconsciously taking point again as her unspoken inclination dictated. She scanned around her when a thought bubbled up from her inner depths. 'Would my sister be proud of me?'

"None here" Donnchad replied, taking up his position at the back of the party as they started on their way.

As they got further away from the center of the town, His hand rose back up to the hilt of his blade yet again, but only until walking with his right arm stretched across to his left shoulder got straining, and he suddenly realized that he'd put the belt holding his weapon on the wrong way around again. He fumbled furiously as he walked, eventually lifting it off and putting it on correctly so that the hilt was above his right shoulder.

He continued the journey with his hand clutching the hilt and staring at the ground in embarrassment.

"Death, wait up." Violet started after her a few seconds late, having to nearly run a few paces to catch up. “Please slow down.” She jumped at every sound in the forest on either side of the path. Her finger traced on the button that would fully extend her lance. “We’ve been lucky so far with fighting, but—” Her breath caught in her throat; something flitted in the corner of her vision. She glanced back at Donnchad, checking on him. “Well, let’s just be careful.”

Catching the movement in her periphery, Death made a note to watch for it if it showed up again. "No promises. And know the reason why I can't make those." she said, jogging ahead of Violet once again. 'I understand her call for caution, I really do. But my anger will not heed her call and it would rub me the wrong way to do so.' she thought. Death would, in deference to Violet, try to not take as many reckless chances. "Miss you sis, love you." she whispered softly. Allowing herself to think about her dragon for a moment, just one single moment, Death heaved a sigh and moved her weapon from it's holster. 'Just in case something pops.' she mused.

Donnchad’s glance turned up and around at the movement. The grip on his weapon tightened as he quickened his pace to catch up with the others, only for Death to break onto a steady jog.

“OK, so I guess we’re running there now.” He wasn’t about to argue. If the other town was nearby enough to keep up such a pace, then getting there faster would mean less chance of an unwelcome encounter.

Although he didn’t run ahead of Violet, instead waiting for her response. He preferred to stay at the back of the team - it was the best position for him to use his semblance if they were caught by surprise.

Violet gritted her teeth, frowning at Death’s back shrinking with distance. She’ll get herself killed like that, she thought. Her gait, stuck somewhere between a run and stiff fast walking, was starting to hurt, especially in the tense muscles of her thighs. At the very least, it helped her feet fall more lightly. The silence of the surrounding path made all of their footsteps sound uncomfortably loud, or at least they sounded that way to Violet. She hung back a little until she was next to Donnchad. “I guess," she said. She gave Death a pointed look. "I think we'll have to run whether or not we want to."

Having fallen into a partial trance Death unconsciously put more distance between her and her traveling companions. Unimportant thoughts and feeling bubbled in her mind. All of them saying a variant of the same argument that the ever cryptic Ozpin used against her. 'Do not go down that road Rose. You know what's at the end of it.' she thought firmly. It was only after a reverberating growl wimpled through the air that she activated her Charon's Rosario. "Shit." Death murmured to herself. Instead of waiting for for Violet and Donnchad, which would be the sensible thing to do, she charged right into the middle.

Donnchad was nodding to Violet when his attention was caught by the sound of growling and clanking mechanisms ahead of them.

"Oh no." He said, looking up to see Death running straight into a fray. "Oh you've got to be-"

Donnchad broke into a sprint. He'd almost run out of breath by the time he caught up, His weapon's scabbard clicking open. In one wide movement he swung his sword, Neasclaw, from its sheath, over his back, underarm, the blade just scraping the ground, and pressed the switch so that when it swept up it extended into its chain form, an ascending strike aimed at whatever target he could hit best from behind Death. He then grabbed the pommel by his left and and slid into a wrath-guard stance.

Violet hardly meant to release her lance (which she had dubbed Thorn), it was more her hand twitching on the release once she realized the trouble that Death was in. Stupid, stupid, stupid! she thought, sprinted forward, pulling Thorn away from the ground so she would not trip. With a strong thrust, she managed to at least distract a beast bearing down on Death. Blood dripped out of the wound and dripped onto the leaf litter as the grim turned toward Violet. It leaped at her. She blocked it with her lance.

Barely noticing the others rushing in to distract the Grim attempting to flank her, she adjusted her moves to cover their backs. 'DIE!' she thought heatedly, slicing through a Beowolf's midsection. Carving out a swathe of lobbed off limbs Death flowed around the contained combat area. Dropping in and out of her blacken rose petal stream form. Taking a blow on her scythe for Violet that sent her skidding several feet, that blow's recoil hitting hard enough to kick start her secondary semblance, she grins with a predatory glint in her eyes. "Dummies." she states as she started to flow around faster. Tanking more blows meant for the others, Death increased the area her fellow companions had to fight with. Leaving a trail of dead Grim in her wake.

The grimm Violet blocked with her lance made ready to retaliate only to end up skewered on Neasclaw. With a yell Donnchad swung his weapon in a wide arc, tearing the best open and inflicting minor wounds on a couple of beowolves that had paced up to him, however this only served to irritate them. They snarled as he jumped back to assess the situation. Death was doing her usual rampage of destruction thing, but Violet seemed to be playing more carefully.

He decided on his course of action, and edged nearer to Violet. From here he could help her deal more damage to the enemy while having a good viewpoint so he could assist Death with occasional shields.

Violet let Death do as she pleased, getting the feeling that even if she did try to help, it wouldn’t be all that welcome, not to mention dangerous. She used her semblance to trip up one of the beowolves bearing down on Donnchad. When it turned its head to snap at the vine, she lunged forward and pierced its neck with Thorn. With a careful cut, she drew one of the others a little farther away from Donnchad, trying to give them both more room to maneuver. She jabbed at it once she'd moved away, her the point slipping through a narrow gap in the hardest parts of the beast’s hide. Her attention was divided: the whole time she fought, she was prepared to engage her semblance to assist her comrades.

((Sorry for the poor quality on the end there; I’m exhausted.))

Catching a wayward Grim with Charon's Rosario's blade around it's neck, she allowed the moment to swing her about. Gradually cleaving the head from it's body, she barely slowed as a internal timer winds down just barely ahead of her aura. 'Need to end this.' Death mused leaping straight up. Instinctively switching her weapon to ranged mode, while pumping aura into the rocket, she ricocheted higher up. Once clear of the trees and delaying attacks, she settles her now slender rocket launcher in a under slung grip. 'Hopes this works.' Death mused while calling out, "Donnchad, hell drake incoming, take Violet and turtle!" Pulling the trigger, a stream of aura enhanced rockets spewed from Charon's Rosario's barrel and pushed her higher in to the air.

“Thanks!” Donnchad called out as Violet used her vines to deal with the grimm. Turning his attention back to a couple of the beasts about to pounce at him, he jumped back. As the slightly larger one examined its quarry, the smaller one rushed in straightaway. That’s what I was counting on, he thought, hand outstretched. The young beowolf hit the shield hard, with a whimper, and he ran it through with the sword. The other was now on the attack, but a couple of aura-enhanced cuts forced it to retreat for a few seconds.

It was now that he heard Death shouting for them both to get out of the way. He looked up at his teammate, now basically a plummeting tornado of destruction. He turned to Violet. “We should probably do what she said.” He turned sideways and ran as far away as he could get while keeping his attention on the advancing grimm.

In lieu of a reply, Violet began a swift retreat. As she went, a rock struck the side of her head and drew blood. It knocked her off slightly off balance and she had to resist the urge to put a hand to her wound. A Grim took the opportunity to snap at her side. Violet just barely managed to slip out of the way. Its teeth closed an inch or two away from her ribs. She gave it a solid jab in eye with the butt of her lance and while it turned, she stuck its flank with pointy end. It turned and fled into the woods. Once Violet had made it to a safer distance, she brought up a thick tangle of vines to offer some protection. At the very least, it would be something. Watching Death, her lip twitched. She turned away and put her back almost to Donnchad’s. The Grim were looking more and more distracted by Death’s display, giving Violet opportunity to put down another with a cut. She kept an ear open for a change in Death’s situation, but didn’t look back.

Watching her enhanced rockets impact, explode amidst the Grim, and expell debris outward Death took a second to admire her handiwork. 'Would be proud?' she wondered. An unholy screech placed a halt to her musings. Turning around to face the incoming Nevermore, Death launched more rockets. Each one moving her higher in the air, and closer to a broken limb or an unfortunate dirt nap. Snagging the Grim around the neck with her scythe, something she frequently practiced, Death depressed the trigger one more time. Using the force to brutally separate the Grim's head from it's body. "Done." she murmured softly.

Free falling for several seconds, charging up whatever aura she could muster, she burst into her rose petal stream and flowed towards her companions. Ignoring the carnage, disintegrating Grim and flaming debris, she memorized the fleet of wholeness that filled her. Right up till she unceremoniously crashed just short of Violet's vine barrier. Rolling and grunting as more pain dog piled atop those accrued during the fight, Death's weapon returned to it's travel size. Once she stopped, Death closed her gunmetal eyes and mumbled, "Sent you more company sis."

Donnchad's arm covered his face as he was assailed by a cloud of debris. Once the massacre was over, he lowered his cover to see Death falling from the sky and landing painfully on the ground in front of them. He hurried over to where she'd crashed, brushing the dust off his clothes as he went.

Crouching slightly, he looked over at her. She'd seemed to have muttered something before closing her eyes, but from the looks of it she didn't seem in any state to be going anywhere.

"Death? Are you still awake?"

While he waited for a response, or lack of one, Donnchad turned to Violet and asked "What now?"

Violet covered her eyes with a hand and kept her mouth clamped shut. Grit irritated the inside of her nose. She sneezed. After the dust had settled, she let down the vines. While Donnchad ran to Death, Violet took a look around to make sure that all of the Grim were truly dead. She rotated the shaft of her lance. Her jaw was clenched hard enough that it started to hurt.
Hearing Donnchad speak behind her, she turned to face him. “I, uh,” She knelt next to Death and gave her a quick look over. She bit her lip. “I have bandages, I think. Other than that…” She retrieved her scroll from her jacket pocket. The digital map was still open. “It doesn’t look like the town’s far off, so if we had to, we could probably carry her.” She took a long, shallow breath then seated herself more comfortably on the ground. She patted the ground next to her by way of an invitation.

"I will be fine Violet. Just give me a few to catch my breath." Death states in a firm whisper. 'You can't always rely on yourself sis.' she heard from somewhere in her head. 'Need work my trust issues soon.' she mused as she kept her eyes closed. Choosing to ignore it, since it wasn't new, she rolled over to her back and loosed a grunt. Knowing that she'll be able to move without much complaint in a couple minutes. Death covered her eyes and said very softly, "Sorry for not waiting for you and Donnchad. Donnchad breathed a sigh of relief, collapsing into the ground. He shuffled into a seated position with his hands planted on the ground behind him.

"I need to get one of those weapons that you can drink coffee out of." he remarked, brushing a little dust off his clothes as he sat more upright. His gaze was still flitting across the treeline despite the grimm having been taken care of.

Some help I was back there, he thought as he regarded the undergrowth, which seemed docile enough for the time being. They’d need a few minutes to catch their breath - while he was waiting, he took Neasclaw back from the ground where he had just dropped it, casually cleaning the little bits of mud off on the grass. The grimm blood had dissipated by now.

"I'm sure you are," she said. She didn’t look at Death. She dusted off her skirt. She took a few deep breaths. With a small click, she buried her face in her scroll again, tracing over the route on the map, then flipping through her messages. There was nothing much there, not even a message from her parents let alone a message from Ivy. She snapped it shut, then collapsed Thorn back into its cool, smooth cylinder. One hand pluckd at the hem of her skirt and the other rubbed the knuckle of her thumb. Her eyes darted over the quiet brush. The birds were coming back. “Let me know when you’re ready,” Violet said. “I am when you are.”

Re: RWBY: Proof of Innocence

Hey, dudes! So, I have an idea for the bad guys. It's kinda trite, but it's that a group trying to insert themselves and others with them into positions of power. They're using grim attacks as a cover for assassinating key individuals. The ones around the world are the same sort of purpose: covering for the big ones. Ivy and others have been coerced into helping. The idea is that they'd talk the fall, favorable individual would be placed as head, end of story. Then, after the right people were in the right places, they'd "clear up" the grim and stuff and strengthen their authority.
Jeez, sorry, I didn't mean to talk your ears off. Of course, if you have any improvements and stuff, I'd love to hear it!

RWBY: Proof of Innocence

Hello, and welcome to "RWBY: Proof of Innocence!” I’ll post post important stuff from time to time, but other than that, use this space as you will.
