The Liminal Academy

The Liminal Academy

0 INK

The Liminal Academy has three doors: one on the floating sky-island of Aeolia, one in Shadowtown beneath, and one that does not open under any circumstance. For those who can pay the price, it is the greatest academy of magic in the Known World.

10,479 readers have visited The Liminal Academy since Morgan_R created it.

Introduction

CLOSED TO NEW INTEREST.

The Setting:
The Known World comprises one major continent, known as Terra, and various islands. Exploratory missions to discover additional lands beyond the Known World have returned with findings of endless ocean -- when they have returned at all.

The Liminal Academy is located in northern Terra, in the Kingdom of Alyria. This 'kingdom' has in fact been ruled by a queen for seven generations. There are rumors concerning the cause of this, the ugliest of which have the queens killing their male offspring -- and of course young male foundlings often imagine themselves to be of royal descent.

The kingdom's capital city is Aeolia, built on a magically suspended island in the sky. The climate is also controlled by magic, and it is always pleasantly warm, with gently, cooling breezes. It only rains at night, just enough to keep the city's cisterns full, and to water its many gardens and orchards. The city is primarily inhabited by the nobility, along with their servants. The central city is ringed with farmland, and each noble house controls a fief of this land.

Beneath Aeolia lies Shadowtown, at this point a city in its own right. Shadowtown is a city in perpetual twilight, but with a bright center, for it is built around the Lift, a column of light where hot-air balloons carry cargo up to Aeolia above. Shadowtown's inhabitants range from obscenely wealthy merchants to penniless street children, and everything in between.

The Academy:
The Liminal Academy is the work of Luthien de Mendici, a self-taught mage of considerable power and renown. As he himself came from Shadowtown, one of the city's many foundlings, he has opened one of the Academy's doors to such children. He requires no payment from them, only that they prove their talent and intelligence, and pledge themselves to his service after their term of education is complete, for an equal number of years.

To fund the academy, Luthien has opened the other door to Aeolia, and permitted the children of the nobility to pay their way in... though he also requires a certain minimum level of talent. And on the assumption that they're likely to divide themselves anyway, and a little competition can only be a good thing, he has divided the school into two houses: The House of Sunlight, and the House of Candles.

Luthien teaches no classes himself -- indeed, he is known for attending them, sometimes to the dismay of his teachers.

She wants something from me. Just play along. Charlotte forced a smile and replied, "Hello. My name's Charlotte. Pleasure to meet you." We've just met, and it's already uncomfortable. How the heck do I respond to that question?? She thought for a moment, then replied, "They both sounded useful to me."

Quick, think of something else to say to her! "Um...uh, how long have you been here?" Stupid question. Nice job, Charlotte. e_e

...aaaaand you just *had* to make it awkward. I hate you already. "N-no, there's nothing I wanted to ask of you. I just thought we should be introduced, since we might be studying together eventually." Hopefully not.

She rocked on her heels a little and glanced awkwardly at the floor.

Allyse tilted her head at Charlotte, smiling happily.
"Nice to meet you Lottie, can I call you Lottie? I'm a new student so I only just got her but I say I have been her for longer than you. How come you weren't in the dining room?" She continued to be completely oblivious to the atmosphere, continuing to blabber on like usual.
Noticing the silver haired boy, Cecil right? She gave him a smile as he bowed Lottie, he really was a pretty guy, almost feminine in looks. Blinking up him she looked him up and down, before nodding her head as if coming to a conclusion.
"Illusions is brilliant, I use them all the time. I haven't taken the Art of magic before so I wouldn't know what that's like but the teacher is nice! Let's be friends!" She grinned at the girl before heading back towards her room, tired from the day.

She turned to look back at the gathering students and pouted slightly, a tour was all well and good but it was way more fun to go exploring and discover things by yourself than be lead... But that would only in convince others.
Giving Cecil a smile she nodded and turned around, "Thanks for that, I didn't even realise though I do think it's more fun to go exploring than having a tour, this is easier though." She said to the boy and Charlotte as she began to walk towards the group, obviously expecting them to follow her towards the group though she wasn't really paying much attention as she blabbed on happily.

The Chatelaine eyes the gathering crowd of students with an air of disapproval... though exactly what it is that she disapproves of is unclear. Finally some tipping point is reached, whether in the number of students or the time she's waited, and she clears her throat to gather their scattered attention.

"Welcome to the Liminal Academy," she says, in a tone that is not, in fact, particularly welcoming. "We presently stand in the Great Hall. Those of you who arrived in a timely fashion will have already found your rooms. There is also common room for your House leading off of each balcony hall. We will not be visiting the common rooms as a group, as they are intended to be for the members of each respective House, but I trust you will manage to find them."

"On this level, there are eight classrooms surrounding the Great Hall. As you can see on their doors," she gestures, "they are named on a theme of mythological creatures: dragon, unicorn, griffin, phoenix, basilisk, pegasus, harpy, chimera."

"Now, if you will please follow me, we have some ground to cover." The Chatelaine sweeps forwards, the hem of her unfashionably long dress just brushing the floor. She takes the right-hand doorway of the two that lead to the two parallel hallways, and then immediately turns right, down another hall.

"The large doors to our right lead to the East Gymnasium, where the weapons classes are held. Ahead is the East Tower. You will find that the Auditorium is accessible from this level, or from one level up."

As they reach the end of the hall, she opens the door, allowing the students to see into the large circular room, with tiers of seats rising up into the shadows, as it is presently unilluminated. To the right of the door, stairs follow the outer curve of the room upwards, while to the right, a hall follows the same curve.

"Moving on," she says, and heads down the hall, "The library." Midway down the hall, she opens another door, to the left, and this time ushers them all inside. She looks to the young woman at the central desk. "Ms. Ladria," she says. "Would you be so kind as to go over the rules of the library for our new first-years?"

As everyone is filed into the Library, they can see a single...student, though a little older, walking away from the central desk, leaving the spot empty. She briskly approached a shelf, and began to climb up a precariously steep ladder. She softly mumbled to herself, apparently lost in her own train of thoughts, when she suddenly snapped her fingers, and obtained a few books from the shelves nearby, by then it was two stories up.

The ladder wobbled under her sudden movements, and the two narrow legs began to lean backwards, apparently unable to support the small lady with the books.

With a cry, she fell from the two-story height...

...and was subsequently caught by a slide of ice that had sprung up from the floor. The ladder was caught in the ice, and the student slid down to the floor, undamaged. The students could feel an immediate change in the air...as if the air was a greenhouse on the top of a very high mountain.

It was only then that she noticed the students, and more importantly, the Chatelaine.

"..."

She stared at them, a little surprised, before blinking once or twice to snap herself back into reality. She plopped her books down on a rather strangely-colored table, a bright lime green. She then, with a minor gesture of her left hand, shifted the ice so that the ladder was re-aligned to its original position. With another small gesture, the ice began to let out a strange sort of hissing noise, and a sort of fume wafted back into the air. It was only then that the air returned to its normal quality...

She let her arm go down to her side, and then folded her hands sheepishly. A small tinge of blush was on her face now, her head now a cute beet of embarrassment.

"...p-pardon me f-for my earlier actions...M-miss Chatelaine...

...I-I'm sorry y-you had to...see that, students. I am Ms. Ladria, th-the...the Art teacher...a-and...daytime L-librarian here...

...w-we also have closed-off study areas made f-for students...to w-work in th-their own environment.

...I-I believe...that is all...?"

She gave the Chatelaine a pleading look, as if she wanted some aid...

"...i-if any of th-the students here want to ask a question...feel free to..."

The Liminal Academy

Whether you approach from Aeolia or Shadowtown, the Liminal Academy looks the same: A massive, castle-like building, its many towers reaching for the sky.

The Known World

The Known World comprises one major continent, known as Terra, and various islands. This game takes place in Northern Terra, in the kingdom of Alysia.

The Great Hall

The Great Hall of the Academy. The parquet floor is arranged around a central compass rose, and in the lofty space above, glowing orbs perform a stately dance. Two tiers of balconies encircle the room.

The Dining Hall

A large room, longer than it is wide. Students are seated at parallel sets of tables, by year and house -- Suns to the left, Candles to the right. The teachers' table is at the far end of the room, closest to the first-years.

The Blue Room

A medium-sized, circular room. The round table at its center seats anywhere from eight to twenty, with exactly as many chairs as are needed. The ceiling is an illusion of blue sky with drifting clouds, regardless of the time of day.

Shadowtown

A city of eternal twilight, Shadowtown is home to everyone from wealthy merchants to penniless beggars.

Aeolia

The floating island of Aeolia is a beautiful place, from the lush pastoral fiefs, to the soaring towers of the palace. This is the home of royalty and nobility.
