Introduction

The year is 2033, five years after a worldwide biological war. The surface is a barren waste, the air toxic to a human's body after only minutes of exposure without a gas mask. Humanity is scattered, on the brink of extinction, but pockets of life have survived by fleeing down into the underground. Forgotten metro lines have spawned settlements, and humanity endures its self-inflicted trials. Creatures have mutated and evolved to take the place of the formerly dominant race of the planet, and they regularly clash with humanity for resources and space.

Paper money is worthless in this time period, used only for kindling of fires if it is kept at all. Ammunition, and sometimes guns, are the new currencies of the time. Food is also valueable, worth more than its weight in ammunition in some places, because it is so scarce. Many of the average citizens rely on the Rangers, the brave souls who forage into the tunnels or even the surface, to survive.

The largest settlement in three hundred miles is the Brendis Settlement. It resides inside of a natural cave formation, discovered by a group of Rangers on a foraging journey. It has thrived, mainly due to its extremely defensible position. There are only two entrances to the caverns, both enlarged to allow a hand-powered cart to travel along scavenged rails. These give the Rangers a faster mode of trasportation, and a way to bring back any large supply caches they may find abandoned in the tunnels. Both entrances are heavily guarded, each with armed men and a mounted flamethrower to deter the creatures of the tunnels.

Humanity's main enemy in the underground tunnels are the Nosalis. Nosalis are most comparable to pre-war burrowing rodents. They stand roughly three feet tall, stumbling about in a rudamentary fashion on their hind legs to watch for prey. When they catch the scent, they revert to a four-legged sprint that they can maintain for respectable distances. They are pack hunters, usually in groups of five to eight, and will immediately attack a lone target. Groups of even three people are often enough to deter them. The danger lies in their sharp claws and teeth, which they will often use to maim a target. They then begin devouring the target, often without finishing the kill first. Nosalis are extremely aggressive.

On the surface, a flying beast known as a Demon rules the skies. Demons are large, powerful predators and have a human sized body with a knobbly spine and a short, bat-like tail. The Demon has four prehensile limbs and two large wings. They have a long head with a blunt snout, consisting of a bat-like nose, green eyes with vertical cat-like slit pupils set far apart on the head, and a large mouth with 4 primary teeth and several secondary teeth. They often hunt in pairs, and are easily deterred by entering a building. They avoid restricting their ability to fly, but have been known to reach inside buildings and attempt to pull rangers out. They are very difficult to kill, because they retreat if their initial ambush fails, and are strong enough to tear a man in half.

Industry was crippled, and is only just now beginning to reform in the larger settlements, such as Brendis. This highly restricts the weaponry humanity has available to protect itself. Explosives are almost never used for combat, due to the risk of caving in a tunnel. Post-war ammunition is known as 'dirty rounds', and tend to be harsher on guns when used. The one model of gun mass-produced in Brendis is affectionately known as the 'Bastard'. The name comes from a combination of its tendency to spray inaccurately on automatic settings, its tendency for overheating, and finicky reloading system that jams often. These shortcomings combine to give the weapon its name: It's a real bastard to use. Pre-war ammunition is known as 'clean rounds', and is one of the most sought after items in the metro. It is both a cleaner shot as well as a more powerful one. Pre-war guns are also valueable, and are often the prized posession of any Ranger fortunate enough to own one.

That's it for the basics. Welcome to the metro. Do you have what it takes to survive?

Re: [OOC] The Metro, 2033

Metro 2033 (the book by Dimitry Glukhovsky and the game by THQ based on the former) are set around 2 decades after the nuclear apocalypse that killed the surface of the world and pushed the survivors underground to deal with the horror of the Mosco Metro. There are no Nosalis's in the book. A nice touch that the game added in my opinion. Anyway I'm straying from the topic. I like the idea for an RP set in the Metro universe, the only problem I see is choosing which Metro to set it in. The New York and London undergrounds are probably the better known ones but then we'd also have to take into account the amount of people who've played the game/read the book and as such have become familiar with the Mosco Metro as well.

I think an agreed on Metro complete with maps etc would really make the RP more solid, instead of just plunking people down in a tunnel and saying "imagine shit up!" Whilst highly enjoyable to imagine stuff, surely it'd be more fun to have a set place to imagine stuff in? It's not Minecraft after all, so I doubt we should be expected to just dig our own tunnels (though adding tunnels to an existing place would be fun). I understand the trickyness with setting it in say the London Underground because of many people's lack of knowledge about it, but then that's what maps are for (I chose the London Underground because it's the 'metro' I'm most familiar with, having lived in London all my life).

As smrtazz (lol) said, someone with Experience would be good to have in this RP. Cypher for example, seems to know a fair bit about the setting of the Metro world, and would make a good edition. I'd join myself, but I'm currently tied up in another, albeit slow-moving, RP. I will submit a character profile once I can see that this is taking off and/or if my other RP fails to get anywhere.

Hope you guys get a good RP going. Hope to see you in the tunnels.

Re: [OOC] The Metro, 2033

So sorry that I made this and kind of let it ghost for a few days. I've had unexpected issues pop up.

Anyway, in regards to a character skeleton or anything of the sort, I was not going to force the setting to remain Russian. If you want to play a Russian character, like in the game, feel free. But, feel free to be from where ever else you want. I specifically didn't set a base location with regards to real-world location so that it would be more accessible for people to play what they want.

I honestly don't mind if every last person makes a rich gun trader, or some poor soul without a rifle to their name. I don't want this to be overly restrictive, I wanted to give it room to grow. I was going to add more areas, and such, but I just honestly do not have time at the moment.

This is just a check in post, that yes, this RP is still going to be alive (I hope). I will return when medical issues have been settled... So sorry if your character is sitting "waiting for approval" for a few days.

Re: [OOC] The Metro, 2033

maybe someone who has experince with the metro should re submit, I would but all I know is that it's kind of like fallout

Re: [OOC] The Metro, 2033

Hey Cypher this rp still going to be played?

Sorry about the spambot post! Removing it now.

Re: [OOC] The Metro, 2033

I have to say; I was waiting for a Metro 2033 roleplay. With a setting as rich and immersive as the one Glukhovsky created in his novel (and, for that matter, the one that THQ translated to the game), it was really only a matter of time. But still, it's been far too long.

I'm a huge fan of Metro 2033 and I'd love to roll up a character for this, if you'd have me.

Re: [OOC] The Metro, 2033

Could I possibly import an outfit from Fallout New Vegas (The NCR Desert Armor)

Re: [OOC] The Metro, 2033

I surprised to see this one pop out here, I'll give a character a shot, any skeleton I should keep in mind?
Also are we keeping the characters russian like the game and book?

Re: [OOC] The Metro, 2033

This sounds pretty cool. I might make a character.
