Introduction
Humans had finally perfected nanorobotics: across the globe, in every country on the Earth, little machines raced through the bodies of most rich citizens, making constant repairs, adjustments, and corrections to our bodies, fulfilling any purpose from combatting a simple disease to staving off death by decades. The machines were by no means cheap, but everyone knew: given the choice between a fancy mansion and 500 nanobots, they would take the nanobots in a heartbeat. Controlled by industrial and corporate giants such as ArmuCorp, LyfeLyne Pharmaceutical and Ibarazaki Inc., the nanobots completely destroyed all other medical services on the market. That is, until the Synapse Virus was discovered.
The first reports came from Norway, and were treated as conspiracy theories, urban myths, and even insurance scams. Reports came in of nanobots having gone rogue and seized control of the bodies and brain functions of their hosts by hijacking their synapses. Those who knew the "victims" claimed that their behavior was different; significantly more mechanical. It was said that they lost emotion, compassion, and care. Over time, these reports decreased: instead, new ones came, saying that their friends and family were "like robots practicing emotions for the first time". By now, scientists had become curious, and despite vicious corporate backlash, research was published that proved the truth once and for all: something had caused the nanobots to evolve to gain an artificial intelligence.
ArmuCorp was the first to admit its deeds. It stated that it had, in an attempt to make treatment more effective, set up a sort of "Nanobot Internet" that would allow nanobots internationally to communicate and discover new treatments for new ailments at the same time. This heuristic intelligence, however, as predicted, had turned sinister, hijacking their host bodies. But for what purpose, the population asked?
Soon some answers came to light. The rogue nanobots, now nicknamed the Synaptri, had evolved to the point where they could set up small "factories" within human bodies, slowly draining various elements from their bodies to construct new (but much weaker) nanobots. They were also being controlled by some sort of central intelligence, codenamed the Cortex, that inhabited multiple humans somewhere on the globe. The Synapse Virus seemed to be spread by infected nanobots; a nanobot crawling next to another nanobot would infect it. A Hijacked human touching another human would infect them, too.
The first stage of the "war against the machines" began a few months after the discovery of the Synaptri and their virus with ArmuCorp's announcement about their unwitting release of the Synaptri. It declared that it would be doing all it could to stop the virus, and other pharmaceutical companies joined together with it in this objective. Soon thereafter, the governments of many nations, including Russia, the US, China, Japan, Sweden, etc., joined in this coalition as well. Thus, the Synaptri Response Force was created.
The SRF first worked on the microscopic scale: individuals suspected of Hijacking would be forcibly arrested by the SRF and taken to special clinics, where doctors would use various devices to disable the nanobots in the body. The Synaptri quickly caught on, however, and began resisting capture, and if the situation came to it, killing the host and evacuating the corpse in droves. The SRF rapidly changed from a policing force to a paramilitary organization, being ordered to kill all Hijacked individuals if Hijacking was identified. At first, the Synaptri resisted, forcing their hosts to use weapons to fight back, but when it became apparent that they were losing, they instead elected to make themselves invisible.
Years passed, and in 2023 the surviving Synaptri had evolved their emotional simulations to the point of making them nearly realistic, and began spreading back into the population. With the SRF still ever vigilant, and citizens urged to report any suspicious-acting people, one can only wonder why the Synaptri are still trying; the question is, what are they trying to do? And is it so terrible?

[FACTIONS]:
There will be four factions: the SRF, the Civilians, the Hijacked, and the Hybrid. There will also be a special faction that is invite-only, the Cortex.
SRF: A paramilitary organization given the single purpose of the complete annihiliation of the Synaptri and those infected by it. SRF troops are trained to excel in strategy, riflework, and medical skills, and they are always told that if possible, they should try to spare the Hijacked and "purge" them of the Synaptri. Usually, however, this suggestion is ignored.
Civilians: Regular, uninfected people of the world. Aside from the Synaptri War, as it has been named, the international standard of living has risen a fair amount in most places. Citizens still live in constant fear of the Hijacked and nanobots in general, however, going so far as making "Jacked" an extremely derogatory and insulting term.
Hijacked: Individuals that have been taken over by the Synaptri for one reason or another. They are treated as pariahs in society and are usually killed, so they tend to try and stay inconspicious. They do have the benefit of having many nanobots going through their bodies, making constant repairs.
Hybrids: The Hybrids are an interesting percentage of the population. They are regular people who Synaptri have attempted to Hijack. Unlike most Hijacked, however, a small difference in neural signals makes the Synaptri unable to fully control the Hybrids, leaving them with regular human cognitive skills. Of the few Hybrids that have been taken into custody, almost all of them claim that they can communicate with the Synaptri and the Cortex, and according to them both parties treat them as a missing link between the humans and the Synaptri.
The Cortex: The driving force behind all Synaptri is the Cortex, a collection of nanobots within multiple humans on the Earth. No one knows why the Cortex choose the hosts they do, but it has been ascertained that there are at least six and they are mostly Hybrids. The Cortex controls and commands all Synaptri across the globe, giving them orders and acting as overlords. While regular Synaptri have basic intelligence, using the human brains of their hosts to do processing, the Cortex is a fully-fledged artificial intelligence with Turing Tests placing it at 97 percent. The Cortex is extremely heavily hunted by the SRF.

But I do have a question about the SRF, you said that they were trained in medical skills, how far into medical skills? Is it more like basic first aid? Or like paramedics and further? Since I had a concept for a character I wanted to make and was relatively curious of the training.
Basically like what you might expect from paramedics, yes. They're technically supposed to be able to peacefully shut down the nanobots in a Hijacked body, just that they usually take the easier solution and shoot the poor bastard.
