"The king has fallen."
There are many versions of this story. Which one have you heard? Do the children die in your version? Who’s version is definitive? Fables, myths, and fairy tales, told so many times not even the bones of the story remain the same. The teller decides. A spell, an incantation, a curse.
A cry to the Gods, a cry so desperate, so weak, that it could not be ignored. Did you hear this cry? They speak of it often in the tales of old, how a group of people wrought with misery and hopelessness plead with the God's for the power to protect so they may never lose something important to them again.
The God's heard their cry, and gifted them with the power to protect, abilities so amazing they themselves were viewed as God's by those without. However, all things that are not understood, are hated. Those who were left wanting for such power turned the world against those who had been gifted. They were different, dangerous. In a Kingdom where magic was just a myth, those with it were things to be feared.
A curse.
Nothing as amazing as these abilities could be given without a downside, what goes up must come down they say. Those who were given the gift's of the God's were given the ultimate curse.
They could never know peace.
At the time, no one quite understood what that meant, when they stopped aging though - they started to understand.
What do you do when you cannot die? What do you do when the world has turned against you for being different, for being superhuman? You were chosen, some say, you will be a hero some day, others shout. You are a monster, they whisper. What do you do when there is no where to turn? You hide, you run, you disappear.
And so they did.
The kingdom grew and expanded, the world moved on, they became nothing but myths.
