A reporter with the spirit of a naiad.
Nadia enjoys peanut butter ice cream, loves horror movies, and her favorite authors are Stephen King and Wendell Berry.
She especially has a knack for fixing things.
Being a workaholic, Nadia is extremely dedicated to her work and fills voids for vulnerability or doubt inside with pressure on herself. She likes her job as an environmental reporter because it serves as a good excuse to get away from everything and a distraction to pour herself into when her guard's let down. She's quiet, more of an observer than center stage. After all, that is how you learn, right? Some say that Nadia is quick to criticize and judgmental at first glance, but minds herself not to stick her nose where it doesn't belong. She's got a good head on her shoulders, for years having learned to look out for herself and definitely more street smart than book smart. Nadia isn't a control freak but likes having some authority. She's got a habit of being uptight and disciplined about her work, always putting it before everything else. She also loves learning from mentors or more professional journalists to see their methods and advice, any information she learns sinking into her like a sponge.
Nadia doesn't let her walls down too easily and so it's tough to hurt her, but if you do you won't be able to tell if you do anyway, because the pain rolls off of her and into her work. She's shy and antisocial, not liking to be around people she knows but loves self hibernation, being alone and far off from humanity. She prefers green tea to coffee, reading to shopping, and the mountains to the beach. She doesn't care what people think, either, unafraid to read a book in a workroom full of colleagues or tell off the boss. She likes choosing topics to write about that no one else would even dare, from a haunted house to a cover on AIDS. She isn't one to pay attention to the small things, but more of the big picture, and because of this, she thinks things such as romance are silly and foolish.
Work face aside, Nadia truly does has a free spirited heart. She knows how to have fun and has a dark and sarcastic sense of humor. And although you wouldn't expect it, Nadia's biggest flaw is running away from everything, especially her problems, and refusing to face them until they sort of disappear or work themselves out. She's an insomniac to the extreme, resorting to sleeping pills for any kind of rest.
History/Biography: Nadia was born on June 21, 1986, on the date of the Summer Solstice. Her Dad, Clem Montgomery, left her to fly overseas when she was four years old; leaving Nadia with her mother, Susan, who worked overtime as a college professor and school board member, and her older sister Nilah who looked after her. They lived in a shabby apartment in Owego, New York, and as Nadia grew up she was normally home alone or out in the meadow playing with her school friends.
They'd have all kinds of adventures, running through the enchanted forests and dancing in the meadow, creativity seizing her with laughter and bravery and all the things she could have never been at school or at home. She was always the damsel in distress, always waiting for her prince to rescue her. Never the hero. Her favorite spot in the Dreamscape, however, was always the still water of the mermaid isles. She loved being in the cool, refreshing marshes, flowing over rocks and sediment in a rushing sound, so graceful and calm. In the Dreamscape, she always felt drawn to water (as cliche as it sounds). Once she was in, legs kicking and fluttering in the darkest depths of the ocean, she stayed for hours. These were the times she felt at one with the water, addicted. And it was right then when she decided she wanted to become an environmentalist, stopping rivers from getting polluted and helping wildlife survive. Nature was her passion.
Anyhow, She loved writing stories of the meadow, her imagination running free in every which direction while her sister contrasted and was far more practical. Back in the apartment, her mother lacked care for her youngest daughter, seeing her only as a nuisance in the shadow of Nilah. Nonetheless, they were still close siblings and Nadia loved listening to her tell stories about what Dad was like, how handsome and brave and funny and smart he was. Like his daughter, Clem was a far-fetched dreamer. One day, however, Nilah was killed suddenly in a car accident on the week of Nadia's fourteenth birthday, causing her imagination to shut off quickly and yank her into the real world. Her mother, she later learned, had been diagnosed with clinical depression and spent her days drinking instead of teaching, leaving Nadia to deal alone. Her friendships were slowly evaporating at school, and eventually the meadow had become a place of unfamiliarity and childlike nonsense. Her mother had cut her off from her life for good coming home later each night and hungover the by morning. Nadia regardless took care of her, getting a job at a small independent bookstore to help with the rent. This is where she developed a love for reading. In high school, Nadia had no serious relationships or friendships, finishing off the school years reclusive and standoffish. She went to University of North Carolina on scholarship, studying journalism as a major.
And throughout her childhood, teenhood, and college years, her father never came back.
Nadia went through her life as a successful reporter and a workaholic, sending her mother a portion of her salary every month to take care of herself and the rent. Before Delilah Atwood's death, Nadia was almost about to head on a trip around the world to broadcast for an article piece. Almost leaving the Dreamscape world behind for good. Almost.
โMake-believeโ Character: Naiad (river spirit)
Appearance Within Dreamscape: In the Dreamscape, everything about Nadia's appearance is softer, more muted. Her hair is a silky light brown color, long and flowing out of water, pulled in a ringlet bun in water. Her skin is creamy and smooth, making it easy for her to blend into the river. She normally wears a white threaded dress that reaches mid-thigh, so its easy to swim around in. Her eyes are more silver in the dreamscape, all her features taking on a beauty that not even the mermaids can reach.
Skills Within Dreamscape: Nadia has the power to change the mood of water (she can make it rougher with the tide and waves, or make it calmer and still). She can reach water creatures' emotions, enter the water and come out completely dry, communicate with other naiads and nature spirits, shape shift into a single river or blend in a large body of water, and change the water level of marshes or rivers. Nadia can also supply the clan with fresh water for survival.
Equipment: Aside from her weapon, Nadia carries many healing herbs, poisons, antidotes, and her elixar of pure ocean saltwater that keeps her powers aligned. She knows what plants and flowers and liquids to mix into what so that they can be useful for animals or magic or even food supply recourses.
Weapons: Nadia isn't quite the fighter; the only weapon being a silver jeweled blade she found in the Pirate's Cove one day. Though its light, she's fairly handy with it and moves on fast impulse.
Personality within Dreamscape: Nadia still has the same critical and fearless attitude as an observer, just like in the real world, but her priorities are much more balanced to where she's not obsessed with work, but focused on strategy and keeping the group healthy and alive.
