Personality

At 18 years old and going through his last year of class, Derek's become something of a rebel. Not the kind that goes out of his way to make trouble, but if there's something that he doesn't want to do, he simple does not do it. One word that would describe him would be "nostalgic." He thinks deeply, and would rather philosophize or read a good book than fight, though he gets caught up in fights more often than he would like too. Many of the younger students as well as many who are ranked much lower in the standings look up to him because he often finds himself in somewhat of a protector role. One day he just grew sick of seeing some of the higher ranking guys mess with a group of weaker ones, and he intervened. The resulting conflict saw him rise two ranks as well as become the unofficial protector. He doesn't mind it. While Derek tries to keep to himself, he also guides the ones who follow him as much as he can, telling them there's more to life than what they're presented at this place.

His power, as its most basic level, is the ability to control flame. However, it's more than that. It's a connection with fire and heat that's hardly understandable. He is completely unaffected by heat in any way, and can control explosions in that he can direct them in different paths. Derek is quite able with his power, though it's obvious he's still young. Many people have said that if he had more ambition he could rise in the ranks quickly, but Derek's happy where he is. In fact, any time he's risen at all has been either self defense or in the protection of someone else. To him, the whole thing is pointless he he wants nothing to do with it, so he does not try to make himself more powerful or infamous.

Also, he smokes incessantly. Derek is always smoking something, be it cigarettes or cigars or his pipe.

History

Derek was born normal, but started to exhibit signs of his eventual ability at an early age. It started out with the appearance of a severe fever. While he was apparently unaffected by it and in no pain at all, he had a constant 103 degree fever that would not go down no matter what his mother of the doctors did. Eventually that 103 grew to a 110, and while he should be dead, Derek lived on just fine. When he was seven he started to feel the beginnings of a sixth sense, in that he could feel fire. It first started at a camp fire, when he realized he could focus the fire to cook his own marshmallow quicker. It grew from there, and eventually he saw that he could make fire perform at his will. Then, when he was 10, it got out of hand. The resulting fire had three blocks of his town razed to the ground, and his parents were forced to relinquish him to Advent City. From there, Derek grew up in one of the many orphanage type places that raised kids sent without parents, and ever since Derek's been planning on his escape to get out. He quite hates Advent City, and doesn't believe that he should be shunned from actual society based on something so out of his control.
