ArcArtes: Aim for the Top!

When a few puny wannabe magic warriors are given the lowest of low ranks and dismissed as having no potential, there's nothing to lose and everything to gain. Even an idiot can do the impossible, with enough determination...

Introduction

In the year 2012, everything changed.

One fine spring afternoon, a team of British historical archaeologists accidentally uncovered something remarkable in a small English mountain range. This discovery seemed rather mundane at the time - some ruins belonging to a large tower. To their surprise, however, this tower was soon identified as that built by Vortigern, under the direction of the legendary wizard Merlin. Beneath the tower, there was a lake, showing signs of an immense battle between two mammoth beasts, now reduced to mere skeletons by the ravages of time - dragons. Among the bones was found a small blue crystal orb about the size of a basketball. The archaeologists - curious - picked it up. Through this single action, a sphere of energy was spread across the world. Its effects were not known at the time, but when discovered, they changed the face of the world forever.

Shortly after the discovery of the "Stone of Merlin," as it was called, unusual events began to happen around the globe. Children developed the power to transform themselves and make use of a bizarre form of energy, hypothesized to be energy manifested by their very soul itself - in other words, magic. This energy came to be called Merlin ArcaNA, or MANA for short, and its manifestations as Possession and Breaking. Governments of the world, not wanting to fall behind in the unusual arms race that followed from this discovery, quickly searched out those children capable of using these Merlin Fields, and began studying alongside and educating them in the usage of their powers. Having seen enough science fiction/fantasy movies to know what happens when you "kill the mutants," the United Nations decided upon a more benevolent approach.

They would found schools, dedicated to continuing their unusual students' normal educations and lives whilst showing them the ropes of their new abilities. Although the task was arduous at first, the rules of the Merlin Fields and MANA were soon discovered, and are now standard curriculum at institutions the world over.

However, these institutions have purposes other than the education of their empowered subjects for the leading of normal lives - namely, training in combat, for the sake of raising up a new generation of global police. With powers like this in their hands, world peace did not seem to be an empty dream any longer. However, sometimes world peace is not the only thing these teachers have in mind...

---The Setting---

Our story takes place at the ArcArtes Academy of Kyoto - a renowned, if new institution. They value raw MANA scores above finesse, reasoning that skill can be trained into their students easily, whereas training MANA is much more difficult. Dividing up their students into grades by MANA score, those at Grade 4 are privileged with constant access to the best training facilities, both for Merlin Fields and for more mundane classes. Grade 3 does not have it much worse, with good classrooms and training facilities, with all of the materials they need right at their fingertips. Grade 2 gets decent classrooms, although they have to make due with the unused rooftop sports fields for training purposes. Grade 1 is where it starts getting bad, since the school did not originally intend to allow any students of this level into the establishment. However, due to an overwhelming number of these "Failures," special concessions were made, and barracks were created for them... in the gym storage closet. They have no research materials of their own, have to make due with the gym as a training ground, and are generally regarded with contempt by the other students. They are allowed to remain and study under one condition - that they show incredible improvement in their combat abilities before the midterm, at which point they will be tested in battle against their peers. Those who succeed will be allowed to remain, but those who fail will be sent packing.

However, there is another condition in their favor. If they can defeat their peers before then, they can in turn replace classes above them in MANA score by driving them out of their own facilities, either through an agreed-upon duel between specified individuals or teams, or through all out war. Other classes have been allowed this privilege as well, resulting in a four-way struggle. All eyes are now turned toward the top, and even those in Level 1 have high hopes of becoming the new Level 4. The school, in turn, will turn a blind eye toward the resulting magical brawls in the halls, so long as no damage is done to the school itself, and these engagements are supervised and limited in power so as to ensure the safety of the students.

---The School---

The ArcArtes Academy is divided into three buildings. The East and West wings are one story tall, and the center wing is three stories tall. The East Wing contains the gym, lockers, and barracks/"classrooms" of the Level 1 faction. The West wing, meanwhile, contains the classrooms, meager research center, and rooftop training grounds of the Level 2 group. Between these two wings is the three story central building, shown in the thread image. The first floor contains extensive training grounds, libraries, classrooms, and dormitories for the Level 3, whereas the second floor contains the luxurious domain of the Level 4. The final floor contains offices and apartments for the teachers, who are on site at all times to prevent all hell from breaking loose amongst the students.

Each "territory" essentially consists of a large training room - as well as classrooms and research rooms for the Levels 2-4 - surrounded by dormitories for the students. Each dormitory contains room for six individuals, the size and space in these rooms varying depending on what group one is in. In Level 1, dormitories are not even so much as segregated between the genders, although fortunately the locker and shower rooms are. The dormitories for Level 1 are essentially two closets, each with three worn and torn mattresses, pillows and blankets inside, connected to a shared common room, containing a coffee table and some trashy couches. The gym serves as a cafeteria for the Level 1, although the Levels 2-4 each have their own small cafeteria. The quality of the food varies as well depending on the class one is in, varying for repetitive, standard school food to the sorts of things you might expect to see served at an upscale country club - just another incentive for the Level 1 to improve themselves. Makeshift "clubs" are sometimes formed by the students, although the only real physical activities are usually MANA battles.

---Our "Heroes!"---

The main protagonists of this thread will be a group of six friends, some of whom will have known each other for a long time, others of whom will have befriended one another due to cohabitation in Dormitory 01. The roles will be highly adaptable, so while I'm hoping for a sort of basic characterization according to the following list, I'm also expecting a great deal of life to be breathed into these archetypes, so we're not just a bunch of cliches running around. Feel free to diverge from certain small aspects as listed here, but give me a heads up first so I know of and am okay with it.

Role 1: The Nice Guy

The "Nice Guy" is just that - a genuinely nice person, if a bit clueless socially sometimes. Could range from level-headed and thoughtful to a boisterous, lively, "pal" type of figure. Sees the world somewhat in terms of black and white, and fights for the sake of his friends so they can continue learning to control their powers and rise a few ranks in the world. The Nice Guy is the de facto leader of the Level 1 due to his charisma and intelligence. Possibly shipped with Role 2.

Role 2: The Diligent and Fiery Student - Taken by Tsukiakari

This character is an extremely diligent student whose facade of kindness and "perfection" hides a much more violent side. She can be either cold and angry or kind and easily embarrassed - although if you call her out on the latter, expect to just make her revert to "angry" mode. Despite this seeming unsociability, she truly cares for her comrades, even if she doesn't admit it. What she doesn't have in strength she makes up for in lightning fast speed and devastating skill with her MANA. She also possesses a rather limited ability to use External Possession, and, due to her temper and speed, has earned the nickname "The Untouchable Tiger." She is the lieutenant of the level one, being one of the Nice Guy's most skillful and renowned comrades. Possibly shipped with Role 1.

Role 3: The Hot-Blooded Bruiser

This guy is always running on spirit and willpower. Expect him to be loud, egotistical, and a legend in his own mind. Still, when it comes down to it, he's the most loyal friend you could hope to have, and exceptionally strong despite his low rank. Another powerful lieutenant for the Level 1. Possibly shipped with Role 4.

Role 4: The Sarcastic Ice Queen - Taken by AlyxTheStubborn

This character, due to some sort of event in her past, be it abuse, bullying, or whatever, has taken a somewhat cynical worldview, distancing herself from others and shunning friendship. Expect her to stand on the sidelines making sarcastic comments about how ridiculous the whole situation is. Despite all this, she's a genuinely nice person to those who go out of their way to be kind to her. Give her some interesting backstory and depth, though, since this role could be particularly Mary Sue-ish. Another lieutenant for the Level 1, using more wizard-like attacks than brute strength or close quarters combat, although she is none the less potent for it. Possibly shipped with Role 3.

Role 5: The Stoic/Ninja

This character is incredibly quiet, cool-headed, and, dare I say it, a badass. He might or might not be a practitioner of advanced ninjutsu, and seems to have all the connections and intelligence he needs to know everything at any given moment. He handles negotiations, sabotage, and surprise attacks/"Assassinations" for the Level 1. Possibly shipped with Role 6.

Role 6: The Heart - Taken by 360tan

This character is quiet, too, but for a different reason, be it for shyness or some sort of past event causing her to not talk much. She's an incredibly nice person despite her vulnerability, and is rather lovable, although she might just become a damsel in distress at times. She's the tie that binds her allies together, dealing with internal squabbles amongst the six friends. She, too, handles public relations and negotiations for the Level 1, alongside her bodyguard, the Stoic. Possibly shipped with Role 5.

Note that Possessions and Breakings are not defined at all by this list. Use what you want. I won't force you into using some power I think up.

---The Combat System---

Combat here at ArcArtes will work on a fairly simple basis. Each character will have two powers and one statistic. These powers are known as "Possession" and "Breaking," while the statistic is your character's "Merlin ArcaNA," or "MANA" for short. Each of these terms will be described in detail in the sections below.

---Merlin Arcana---

MANA is, essentially, a unit for measuring given person's base capacity for magic, known as a Merlin Field. A person's Merlin Field can be classified by four "grades" which determine both how much damage they can take, and how much damage they can deal out. A given individual's attacks will have a total MANA strength of exactly one-fourth of their Merlin Field, whereas their total Merlin Field is how much damage must be dealt to them before they go down for the count.

The first and weakest MANA Grade is a Merlin Field with a strength of 100 MANA. This means that each attack this person uses will deal 25 MANA in damage, and they can continue fighting until they have sustained 100 MANA in damage. Say two Grade 1 individuals were fighting - it would take four successful hits for one to eliminate the other's Merlin Field, thereby rendering his victim helpless.

The second MANA Grade is a Merlin Field with a strength of 200 MANA, allowing its wielder to deal 50 MANA in damage with each attack, and sustain up to 200 MANA in damage before they are beaten.

The third MANA Grade is a Merlin Field with a strength of 300 MANA, dealing 75 damage with each attack with a total damage capacity of 300.

The highest MANA Grade is a Merlin Field with a strength of 400 MANA, dealing 100 damage with each attack and sustain up to 400 MANA in total damage.

While one can raise one's MANA Grade through extensive training, it takes a very, very long time. A Grade higher than 4 cannot be achieved.

On a final note, if two attacks strike each other, each attack's MANA will be subtracted from the opposing attack's. Going back to our two hypothetical Grade 1 individuals, if two of their attacks struck one another, they would both be negated. However, if a Grade 4's attack met that of a Grade 1, it would negate the opposing attack and continue with a total energy of 75 MANA. If that same Grade 4's attack was struck by the attacks of 4 Grade 1s at a time, all attacks would be negated.

MANA is recharged at the end of every day through sleep. If an individual lost MANA in a battle during the day, he or she could return to full power after a good rest.

---Possession---

Possession is the most basic form of manifesting an individual's soul as a Merlin Field. By using this technique, a person can give their total MANA physical form around their own bodies - or, in rare cases, outside of their own personal space, a phenomena known as External Possession, which shall be discussed later. By performing Possession, a character has the ability to transform into a "combat form," so to speak, with a differing appearance and outfit from their normal state, and a weapon which they can use in battle. No two Possessions are alike, each having a different appearance, weapon, and special property. Each Possession does, however, share the basic ability to release one's MANA as an energy attack, usually through a slash of one's weapon or through physical attacks, as well as boasting complete protection from all incoming damage until the user's Merlin Field is broken, and their Possession shut down.

As mentioned above, each Possession has a different special property. Essentially, this is a passive ability bestowed on the user to increase their effectiveness in combat. For example, a Possession might grant its user super speed, or super strength, or perhaps might be some sort of weapon telekinetically controlled at the user's will. There is an incredible variety amongst Possessions, and some are much more powerful than others. Interestingly enough, however, the power of a Possession's special property does not seem to be determined by its user's MANA Grade.

On a final note, Possessions have a tendency to spontaneously shut down if their user does not maintain concentration. As a result, certain feelings such as depression, anger, etcetera can sometimes cause a Possession to become unstable, meaning that it is highly advised that an individual not engage in combat in such an emotional state.

---Breaking---

A Breaking is a more advanced method of releasing an individual's MANA energy. Instead of taking a permanent form as a Merlin Field like a Possession, a Breaking is a single surge of MANA through a Merlin Field, allowing for the use of a sort of "finishing move." Each move - much like a Possession - has differing effects. For example, one person's Breaking might be the power to release a storm of flying swords, and another's might involve freezing a target and then shattering it. Unlike a Possession, however, a Breaking varies in its destructive power based on its user's MANA Grade. Each Breaking deals exactly as much damage as its user has MANA at the moment. For example, a fully powered Grade 1 Breaking would deal 100 MANA damage, a fully powered Grade 2 would deal 200, and so on and so forth. However, if an individual has already taken damage, that will be subtracted from his or her Breaking's power. Say a Grade 2 took 100 points of damage from a successful attack by a Grade 4, then used his Breaking. This Breaking would only have a total power of 100 due to the MANA lost by its user to the previous attack. As such, it could be canceled out by a Grade 4 attack, a Grade 1 Breaking, 4 Grade 1 attacks, and so on and so forth.

---External Possession---

On a final note, I will deal with a unique phenomenon pertaining to Possession. Certain individuals are gifted with the power to perform Possession outside of their own bodies. An individual gifted with this strange power could, for example, perform their Possession on an ally, adding their own strength and special property to those of their target. This is known as "Equip Possession," and can only be used between two who have great faith in each other, due to the usually conflicting nature of Merlin Fields.

These individuals gifted with External Possession also have the power to give their Possession a physical form of its own, allowing them to copy themselves in a way. Those who use External Possession, however, oftentimes actually have two separate Possessions, each containing half their total power and having a differing special property. Both can be used Externally, but only one can be used in this manner at a time. Both could, in theory, also be used on one's person at the same time, although this is highly dangerous, as controlling two different manifestations of one's soul overlaid onto one's body in tandem could quite easily kill the user if their concentration was anything less than perfect, meaning any who would use Simultaneous Dual Possession would have to be in a perfect Zen state.

NOTE: None of your characters may begin with this power, although they might well acquire it over time.

---Combat---

Now, back to how the combat itself will work, now that you have some understanding of the terminology and workings of magic. Essentially, we will establish a posting order in OOC, and then each person will post their attack, to be responded to by the one they are fighting. Whether or not an attack hits will depend on the surroundings and how cleverly they are used to cut off routes of escape, as well as upon the usage of the special properties of characters' Possessions. I'll leave dodging and blocking up the combatants, but know that if someone begins to powerplay and evade/block everything for no good reason, I reserve the right to step in and resolve the battle through GM power. Essentially, this will work on a sort of trust system, so don't abuse that trust.

---Rules---

1: No autohitting.
2: No powerplaying.
3: No godmodding.
4: Keep things PG-13. I'd really rather not have anyone taking it to PM.
5: All of our main characters will start as Grade 1, and work their way up. However, to compensate, I'll be willing to allow for some fairly powerful Possessions and Breakings among these six. All satellite characters may be higher Grade, but I'll be less lenient about powerful Possessions and Breakings. Call it a sort of plot armor, if you will.
6: You may reserve a spot as one of the six protagonists. This reserve will be held for one day only, so make your bio as quickly as you can.
7: No Mary Sues or Gary Stus if you can help it. However, I am willing to overlook certain commonly used plot points if you put a new spin on them, or deconstruct them.
8: More rules may come with time and necessity.

Re: ArcArtes: Aim for the Top!

Tsukiakari, could I reserve a position for Role 1 or Role 5?

Re: [OOC] ArcArtes: Aim for the Top!

Alright. Don't take too many roles, though. I'm working on a seventh and eight role with Skwidge at the moment, so it looks like you get The Heart.

Re: [OOC] ArcArtes: Aim for the Top!

Hmm, If no one takes Role three by tonight. I might, MIGHT try to make a character for that role. It could be good practice for me to try the loud tough boisterous role for a bit.

Re: [OOC] ArcArtes: Aim for the Top!

Alright I submitted my character, I really stressed over making her power unique and also trying my hardest MY SUPER HARDEST not to make her past seem stereotypical. I really hope I pulled it off *worries*.

EDIT: Alyx, Let me edit my history a bit to include your character in it. I can go through add in a paragraph and then a sentance about why she decided to come to ArcArtes also. That was I can include you as well.

EDIT 2:
Awww Tsu logged off as well :( Now I'm all alone.

Re: [OOC] ArcArtes: Aim for the Top!

Yes, Skwidge. Yes they are. >=D

Re: [OOC] ArcArtes: Aim for the Top!

Oh hey, Tsui, are the students allowed to sneak into the other wings and "borrow" items? Like books from the library. 8D -rubs hands together quietly- I'll get the Character sheet up in a little while. Must scour for images first >W<

Re: [OOC] ArcArtes: Aim for the Top!

Reservation for Sarcastic Ice Queen please... *eyes glint evilly* I have an idea... I'll try to get it up as quickly as I can, 'kay? Thank you!

Re: [OOC] ArcArtes: Aim for the Top!

As I said in the intro, you can basically do what you want with the characters. I just laid out a basic framework that I thought would be the most amusing.

Re: [OOC] ArcArtes: Aim for the Top!

This looks really interesting! I'm not a big fan of predetermined character traits personally, so I might not join, but I still have my eye on this.

Re: [OOC] ArcArtes: Aim for the Top!

Awesome then. I don't have rush her in and look like a jerk now :(

Thanks Tsu. You'll have her shortly(ish).

Re: [OOC] ArcArtes: Aim for the Top!

That sounds good. I'll reserve it for the both of you, and we'll work something out. ^_^

Re: [OOC] ArcArtes: Aim for the Top!

ROLE 6 THE HEART FDUUFUasDLflxzkjvnlkfszdoiugfvbxz bnNIOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

*cries horribly alone in the corner as her favorite RP character was sniped away by 4 minutes*

EDIT:

Maybe we can mail our characters to Tsu and he decides who gets the spot????

Re: [OOC] ArcArtes: Aim for the Top!

Ooh, I like the new rp. Hey Tsui, would you please reserve The Heart for me? I need to read over it before doing anything, but I must not lose any spots :I xD Thanks.
