If you did not know her, you might never have noticed her. She sat in the middle of the lecture hall, long dark brown hair hiding an acne-filled, plain face and soft brown eyes. When she walked, her head was down, her fingers wrapped around the strap of her sagging backpack. Denim capris and fitted, patterned t-shirts were her uniform. Around Davenport's glistening campus, she was invisible.

When she spoke, her voice was soft, wry, hinting at some long-buried emotion. She rarely laughed. Her jokes were dry, witty on occasion, but mostly recycled from the pages of joke books dating back a few decades. To her few friends, she was the life of the party for all her passion. Never in the school's several papers, magazines, or journals, those who knew her knew she could always be found downtown Minneapolis at the Greater Minneapolis Autism Center, spending the hours between classes volunteering with autistic children.

Her supervisor there knew her as a kind-hearted young woman with an endless ocean of patience, and an intuitive ability to communicate with the many nonverbal children sent to the Center by desperate parents. She smiled and laughed and played with the children, but around Davenport, she was an invisible, silent fixture. Her dorm room smelled faintly of lavender, and her roommate knew her to keep odd hours, spending the wee hours of the morning studying and writing papers that should have been done days before. Other than that, there were no complaints. She kept to herself, cleaned her side of the room, and never played loud music.

Her iPod was stocked with Joan Baez and Lisa Gerrard, along with the occasional album from Three Days Grace.

Her course schedule for the semester during which she was found dead included the following courses: Social Critique and Science Fiction, Islamic Architecture, Introduction to Quantum Mechanics, Introduction to Psychology, and Calculus II. None of the professors remembered her as anything other than the mousy girl who never spoke.
