Avery Lyn

No, no, I do not know Tinkerbell. Puck, though, is an absolute peach.

0 · 1,863 views · located in Camp Keystone

a character in “Camp Keystone: Jupiter Year”, as played by usernamesareadrag

Description

Name: Avery Lyn. Well, he's not really Avery Lyn. Well, he is, but it's complicated. The Fair Folk don't give out their true names to anyone because names hold a great power over them, so young Avery adopted his current name as sort of a joke. Avery roughly meaning elf king/counsel and Lyn stolen for the epic poem Tam Lyn.
Age: 17
What are you: Faerie/Fae/Fair Folk
Human Appearance: He's lithe, pale, and a tiny thing with pointy features, particularly his ears.
Eye Color: Vibrant green
Hair Color: Reddish brown
Height: 5'7
Weight: 120 or thereabouts.
Personality: Getting into good and bad is a bit hard for Avery. Honestly, only the Fae folk know if he's part of the Seelie(good) court or the Unseelie(bad) court and they're not telling anybody. However, even the good faeries are a good deal apathetic and cruel, so living with humans has changed Avery's personality for the better by giving it a bit more humanity. Mischievous- he adores a good trick or prank. Quick tempered- he's easy to offend and quick to retaliate in the way he sees most fit(note: as HE sees most fit). Childish- or so it appears, it's certainly the vibe he likes to give out, at least. Secretive- you may think that you know him, but you may find yourself only knowing the Avery he wants you to know. Possessive- mostly of his things, but certain people as well. Charming-well, when he needs to be. Proud. He'll always keep a promise- he has to. He lacks much empathy and it's hard for him to understand most other people's feelings, but he does try.
Powers: His current powers are a good deal weaker than they should be, but still nothing to ignore. The gift of gab- Avery can speak any language; English, German, bear, you name it. Glamour- it's part of his magic and usually only broken when he stops caring or thinks it will be funny. He can make things appear to be something they're not. You know, dirt looks/feels/smell like gold, a geek look like a prince, etc. Watch out, though, because as his powers grow, it can be hypnotic. Physical abilities- nothing like in his prime, but he can a supernatural grace, unbelievable speed, and can scurry up trees in such a way that a squirrel would be jealous. Mental powers- mostly in creating barriers. He's no mindreader and he's not up to something SO terrible, honest, so he does not like having his thoughts invaded, thank you. At the best you might just hear white noise. At the worst? Well, just don't try it on a bad day.
Cabin #: 4
Likes/Interests/hobbies: Camping, playing the fiddle or sometimes flute, sweets, dancing, shiny or pretty things
Dislikes: Boredom, meat, goodie-two-shoes, anything made of iron, salt, fire, and, most importantly, having to go to bed at a reasonable hour. He's a night owl, thank you very much.
Crush: (edit this throughout the roleplay)
Enemies:(edit this throughout the roleplay)
History/Bio: So, young Avery is a changeling. He switched places with a baby seventeen years ago on a lark, but he was so taken in by the human life(television? Entire stores devoted to sweets? Indoor plumbing? How could he resist?) that, instead of disappearing when he had turned four, he decided to stick around for a few more years. Then a few more, and, well, you get the picture. His faerie family was understandably upset with him, ripped him from his comfy human life as Robert Robinson, and sent him to a sort of half-way house for fair folk like him- those who were too enamored with the human lifestyle. He's gradually being taken back in to the magic life, going back to his old name of Avery and gradually using his magic again, and being sent to Camp Keystone is the next step to trying to make him socialize with people who aren't exactly human.
Other: He's a vegetarian and fairy jokes are the fastest way to get under his skin.

So begins...

Avery Lyn's Story

With Leena off to participate in her counselor duties and Ryan off to who-knows-where, Avery was left not knowing what to do. He wasn't an elementalist, so it wasn't time to train(thank goodness). Yes, he could head over to the mess hall for a nice breakfast, but couldn't really find it in himself to actually do it. And sleep still eluded him, just as it had the night before. Most of the typical electronic gadgets had been taken as part of his "rehabilitation". Only one thing left to do, then, short of finding people to socialize with at this hour in the morning. Finishing his glass of water, Avery placed it into the sink and returned to his room.
Digging through his large bag which he hadn't bothered to unpack yet, Avery changed into more appropriate day clothes- really, just slipping on some dark brown pants and a plain, forest green shirt- and, read for the day as he'd ever be, turned to the only other piece of luggage he'd brought. Well, if you called it luggage.
It was a worn, violin case that had probably seen better days. In an effort not to bother his cabin-mate this early on in the camp experience- he grabbed it by the handle and made his way to the living room area, away from the bedrooms.
He unbuckled the straps keeping the case closed and, with care, lifted out the violin. It was beautifully crafted, all dark, reddish wood and looked as if had been loving cared for.
Forgoing the bow, he plopped down on the couch and began to absently pluck a tune, humming it under his breath at well.
That is until Ryan walked into the room. Avery stopped immediately, finger hovering just over the A string, green eyes snapping up to look at his cabinmate...
Who was wandering around aimlessly? It definitely looked like it, but he had no idea what Ryan was in the first place, so maybe this was normal...?
"What are you doing?" He asked loudly, interest peeked and slightly weirded out.

"What are you doing?" Ryan heard the question echo around him, which he had to say, weirded him out. It wasn't strange to hear voices in dreams, but when they sounded normal, and like your roommate, things got weird. Then it hit him.
In real life, Ryan had just walked into the couch, fell over it, and hit his head. After hitting his head, his eyes opened and he woke up, but he didn't move. Instead, he laid there half upside down, legs still propped up on the couch, as he rubbed his head and a string of cuss words left his move. After realizing that his guess was right, and Avery was really there, Ryan rushed to get to his feet. Did he see that? he thought, then mentally slapped himself. He's looking right at you, no duh he saw that.
"I, uh...." he started awkwardly, trying to think of a way to explain his random sleep walking. Then he spotted a violin. "You play?" he asked, the fact that he just embarrassed himself slipping from his mind momentarily.

Image

Bridgette laughed slightly at Luna's comment as she arrived at the training area. "I'm honestly not that excited. I'm not strong, and my powers aren't very helpful unless I decide to scream..." she decided not to finish that thought. She didn't like doing that to people, and she hoped training didn't include that.

Avery had no been expecting that reaction. In fact, to expect that reaction, you would have to be able to see in the future. When Ryan ran into and subsequently fell over it, Avery pushed himself out of the way in an effort not to become a victim of collateral damage. There, pressed up against one of the arms of the couch, he stared as Ryan hit his head on the floor and, apparently waking up, just lay there in that awkward position, swearing like a sailor. Avery let out a laugh of surprise, covering his mouth quickly although it had been successfully hidden in the stream of curses. No. Was laughing the appropriate action in this situation? Because, shocking as it was, it had been hilarious.
Did he play...? The sudden question confused him. Play what...? Oh. He was holding his violin close to his chest, cradling it like a child.
"Yes," He answered carefully, uncurling now that there were no more cabinmates falling over couches(unless that new one decided to do it as well and he really hope that wasn't the case). "And you sleep walk...?" He may have let Ryan not telling him what he was go easily enough, but this... It was really more of a question in Avery's own self-interest. After all, he didn't want to be disturbed if Ryan walked by his room every night and almost killed himself with the couch.

Avery played violin? Interesting,he thought, but wasn't actually all too interested since the boy was asking about his sleep walking. Letting out a long, over exaggerated sigh, Ryan sat down on the couch, as far from Avery as possible. He didn't want the faerie near him at the moment, since he could tell the boy had laughed at him. Ryan had never been good at dealing with embarrassing moments. He usually avoided people all together, so it didn't happen often. Pulling a scarily blank face, he nodded at Avery's question. Then, in a monotone voice, said, "This is the first time since I was 8, though."
After a moment of staring blankly in front of himself, studying the wall, he turned back to Avery. "Play something," he said, voice slightly lighter than before but not by much.

Now that reaction he had been expecting. Avery watched as Ryan settled down on the opposite end of the couch with a sigh and pulled a rather disturbing face. So sleep walking probably wasn't the best topic to talk about.
He hummed noncommittally at the bit of information Ryan offered up. Probably a bad memory associated with sleep walking, he reasoned, tucking that tidbit of information away in his mind for future use. At least he didn't do this every night or every time he fell asleep. That would've been a problem.
But he knew an olive branch of peace when he saw one, and if Ryan could try to soothe things over and play nice, well, who was Avery to not go along with it.
"All right," He agreed with a smile, a real one, and, after picking up his bow, rosining it, and tightening the bow hair, he put the violin int position and put the bow on the string.
Instantly, the little violin filled the room with music, a celtic tune that started off slow and soon picked up into something more fast-paced. Avery was good, very good, if only because he'd been playing the violin for more years than any person his age could boast. He'd picked up the instrument before he'd become a changeling, something he saw as a distant memory of being enamored when he'd heard the instrument being played by a human.
It was interesting watching his face as he played, the normal whimsical or inquisitive looks replaced by closed eyes and a quiet mix of concentration and peace.
The song came to an end soon enough and, with one last bow stroke, the song was over. Avery lifted it from his chin and placed it back into a resting position.

Ryan listened to Avery play, a slight smile forming on his lips. Avery was good he had to admit. He himself was never great with instruments, but he loved to listen to others play. If they really could play. He didn't really have patience for people learning, so he was glad Avery actually could play.
When Avery stopped playing, Ryan did something that surprised himself. He smiled fully, a real one, and clapped. Not loud clapping, but more quiet. When he realized what he was doing he immediately dropped his hands, smile disappearing. "You're lucky. If I picked up a instrument, I'd probably break it..." Ryan said honestly, leaning back into the couch, letting his stiff awkwardness go away. Naturally he was lazy, not fidgety or tense. After closing his eyes, Ryan continued talking. "You're curious what I am, aren't you? I'm honestly surprised you haven't questioned me about it yet..." he mumbled the last part, eyes still closed. If it weren't for him talking, it would look like he was asleep on the couch.

If Avery was willing to admit it- which, for once, he was not- he was incredibly flattered by Ryan's reaction, almost a little embarrassed if his cheeks getting just a bit pinker was any indication. It wasn't often he had an audience, let alone one who broke into applause, however quiet. And Ryan wasn't the sort of person to just fake a smile, so there was a certain honesty to it.
"If you ever want to hear me play or want to learn..." He trailed off, not really sure where the offer came from. Mostly likely just a knee-jerk reaction to the non-verbal praise. Oooh, if only Mab could see him now, making a sort-of friend.
"Well," his words were more careful this time. "I'd be lying if I said I wasn't. But I didn't think you wanted to talk about it..." He tilted his head questioningly at Ryan. Okay, he was really curious, but he'd met many people who didn't like to advertise what they were. But, then again, he was definitely really curious and that definitely won out. "So, if you want to share...?"

Did Avery really just offer to teach him to play? Ryan mentally laughed at that. No way, he didn't want to die from this guy being pissed over a broken violin. Though, he might take up the listening to him play offer. Music calmed him, and while Ryan seemed to be usually calm anyways, half the time he felt disturbed of stressed.
"So, if you want to share...?" Ryan grinned, looking a tad sinister but he still kept his eyes closed. He was right, Avery did want to know, just like everyone else. Though, he did feel tempted to tell Avery, just to see what he'd say. But, like usual, Ryan decided is was a bad idea. Finally looking over at Avery, he kept grinning, saying the cheesiest thing his mind could think of.
"Your worst nightmare."
Ryan hadn't really told a lie at all. In fact, it was the truth, in a way. The only reason why the statement might not be immediately dismissed as a joke was the creepy smile and the fact that he was staring at Avery. Slowly, Ryan leaned his head back and closed his eyes again, waiting to hear Avery's response. He hoped Avery knew he was joking around. Even if the joke was kind of true, he didn't want Avery to take him seriously. It wouldn't be good to have a roommate fear you. Or fear sleeping.

Avery was a bit apprehensive, watching the sinister smile unfurl onto Ryan's face. All right, so he was smart enough to realize that Ryan really liked trying to creep him out, but, on the other hand, he had no idea what Ryan was. It could be something relatively normal, or he could be the proverbial boogie monster for all Avery knew. Also, he really did want to know if only because he tended to be insatiably curious.
"Your worst nightmare." Avery just looked at Ryan for a moment, just stared at him, for all the good that did. His worst...? The tension around him broke like a soap bubble. That was when Avery burst into laughter. It wasn't a harsh, barking laugh, but a softer one, more like a sweet snicker.
"My worst nightmare? Who are you, Batman?" He snickered, wondering if Ryan would even get that reference. It wouldn't be strange if he didn't- some Creature households didn't partake in human entertainment.
"Well, I'm glad I finally know what you are. No need to wonder about it anymore," His laughter had quickly petered out until they lapsed into a comfortable silence. He took the opportunity to loosen his bow and wipe off the white streaks of rosin from his violin's strings with a rag. Yes, he and Ryan would get on just fine. Probably.

Ryan's shoulders relaxed hearing Avery laugh, even though he hadn't realized he had tensed up. "Yes, I'm batman. Can't you tell?" Ryan rolled his eyes, but the was a real smile now on his face. He was smiling more than he ever had in his entire life right now. Ryan almost started laughing with Avery, but didn't. Instead, he just watched the other boy laugh, finding it somehow calming. Maybe I really should talk to people more,he thought. Would all people make him less depressed? Ryan slowly shook his head. There was a reason he couldn't be around people, he reminded himself. If he hurts Avery, he swears he will never talk to another person again. After the room had fallen silent, Ryan's mind had started to go back to his dream the night before. Where had that forest been? It was really bugging him now, because he was sure he'd never seen it before. How could he dream about it? After a moment of watching Avery wipe his violin's strings, he decided to speak.
"I'm a Nightmare," he said, trying to keep his voice monotone.

Avery had decided that he was lucky. He could have been stuck with someone terrible, maybe a goodie-two-shoes who'd boss him around about the rules, maybe someone who'd had dealings with the Fae and wouldn't be fond of him. Instead, he got Ryan who came off as a serious and kind of creepy person, but Avery liked him.
"I'm a nightmare."
"You're not all that bad," Avery snickered, carefully packing his violin and bow away, snapping the clasps closed once more. That's when it occurred to him that Ryan might not be continuing the joke and might be a little serious. He looked up at him with a sort of confused smile.
"How do you mean?"

Ryan looked at Avery, a doubtful expression on his face. He could just play it off as a joke and not tell him. Sighing, Ryan decided he didn't want Nick to be the only one to know what he was, because quite honestly, if he needed to say something was bugging him, he didn't want to have to go to Nick.
"I meant it as I said it... I'm a Nightmare," he said truthfully, smile gone. "An Alp. Why do you think I asked if you had nightmares this morning." It wasn't really a question, and he purposefully left out the part about him being able to kill Avery. "You wanted to know, so that's it. I'm a demon that gives people nightmares basically," he said, mentally adding about killing people in their sleep. Though he wouldn't tell Avery that.
Ryan gave Avery a kind of worried look. Avery was the only person he'd actually had a real conversation with since getting here, he didn't want him to be mad. He kind of doubted he'd get scared, but he still dreaded it.

"Oh." Avery stared at him blankly for a few moments, processing the information he'd been given. He'd heard of Alps before- a little at least. Just little whispers about creatures that could give you terrifying nightmares. Honestly, he didn't know much about them aside from that. And here Ryan was, informing him like he'd passed out his own death sentence and Avery did feel a little bad for him, seeing how worried he was. No wonder he'd asked about Avery's dreams earlier...
"Well, that's good to know," He smiled at him finally. "Thanks for telling me.
"I've never actually met an Alp, and I don't know much about you lot, but it's fine. It's all fine," He hummed.

Ryan
Ryan smiled a bit, but it wasn't a true smile like before. "Yeah. Thanks. I promise not to kill you," he mumbled, curling up on the edge on the couch. He let his head rest against the arm of the couch, and closed his eyes, even though he was wide awake. He also hadn't really realized he actually said the killing part out loud, but he was too zoned out to care.
After a moment of silence, Ryan had let out a sigh and opened his eyes.
"Should we go check out the training area? I'm kind of curious what's there. Then again... the couch is really comfy... Not sure I want to get up..."
Bridgette
Bridgette was looking around, a little nervous. She wasn't sure how she felt about seeing a bunch of people who looked more powerful than her. No one had seemed to notice her yet, so quietly she went to hide in a shadow and watch the others. From the sounds of it, Nick was going to have them fight. Also, it looked like there wasn't just elementals training.

Avery was reasonably sure that he wasn't supposed to hear that last part. Kill him? How could nightmares kill him? All right, that wouldn't be the weirdest thing that could kill him, but he didn't want to dwell on that fact.
Instead he let out a little laugh. "I was interested to see what the training was all about too. Then maybe we can get real food later. Just give me a minute to put this up," He tapped the old case with one finger, "And we can get going. Unless you decide the couch is just too comfy." With that, he stood up and trotted up the stairs and to his room, slipping the case back to where he'd had it the night before. Avery took a deep breath. This wasn't how he expected his morning to go. He wasn't frightened, just a little overwhelmed. But that wasn't too bad, was it? At least he'd made a friend, right? A bizarre friend who muttered about accidentally maybe accidentally killing him, but a friend nevertheless.
Reasonably calmed down again, he made his way back down the stares, content smile plastered on his face.
"So, what's the verdict? Is the couch willing to let you go?"

Avery made a face at him. Ugh, short jokes. The bane of his existence. Ryan was very lucky that Avery liked him, or else there might be some revenge in the works. And he still maintained that Ryan was freakishly tall and so was everyone taller than him.
The day was bright, and he had to blink for a moment to adjust his eyes after being inside the darker cabin, but, given that it was summer, that shouldn't have been much of a surprise.
"I know," He agreed with Ryan in a serious voice. "Ugh. You're skin's so pale, it's reflecting the sun into my eyes." He smiled mischievously before looking around. He actually had no idea where the training grounds were, but after picking up some noisy activity, he could guess the general direction and started off towards the training grounds.

Ryan
Ryan lightly smacked Avery upside the head, but not enough to actually hurt him. "Oh shush it. My skins not THAT bad," even as the words came out of his mouth, he knew it wasn't completely true. He was freakishly pale. Besides, he made fun of Avery's height, he shouldn't have expected anything else but for him to comment back.
Avery began to walk toward a place where Ryan could hear people. Quietly, he followed behind, letting his bangs fall mostly in front of his eyes as he stuck his hands in his pockets. Sure, he considered Avery his friend now, but that didn't mean he was going to be all smiles around everyone else. He didn't want to give them the idea that he was willing to make friends. He wasn't.
When the training grounds came into view, he saw a few people were around, and of course, Nick was talking to all of them. He let out a quiet sigh, remembering that Nick would probably train them.

"It definitely is," Avery jokes, only laughing when Ryan lightly smacked him. It was nice to be able to joke around with someone, even if they hadn't known each other long. There were quite a few people at the training grounds, either working with that one counselor- Nick, wasn't it?- or milling around.
He could tell Ryan was shutting down on him, but it wasn't unexpected. Talking to someone one on one was different than being in a big group. He'd just have to try that much more to get Ryan to talk, at least to him. He wasn't going to ask the other boy to become a social butterfly.
"Do you know any of them?" He asked Ryan, the only actual camper he knew. Since he'd arrived late, he'd only caught glimpses of people, never names. Glancing around he saw a few interesting people that weren't training; a boy sitting by himself on a bench, a red-headed girl lurking in the shadows...

Ryan
Ryan gave a small nod, pointing to the redhead. "She's Bridgette. A banshee, if I remember correctly. Like me, Nick just said what she was out loud. She looks Okay now, but then I could tell she was maybe more pissed than I was..." he trailed off, looking around, and then pointed to a blonde girl who he remembered seeing with the red head a few times. "That girl... is... um. Lune? Lina.... Luna! I think her names Luna. No idea what she is. That's really the extent of my knowledge of campers though," he told Avery, voice quiet.
Ryan wasn't sure if he wanted to train or not. He didn't see how his powers were useful unless someone was asleep. He could feed of their fears, but he had promised himself not to do that to people anymore.

Avery looked at each girl Ryan pointed out, now able to put a name to a face. He didn't know them per say since he'd never actually talked to either girl, but it was good to know a few more names if he was going to be stuck in this camp for the summer. And the redhead- Bridgette- was a banshee? That he actually knew about, and it was no wonder she'd been so upset when Nick had said it out loud. Really, what they were was a private matter, but maybe things worked different around here. He could only hope that the red bracelet worked as well as advertised to avoid any accidents.
"What do you want to do now?" He asked mildly. "We could watch, try to talk to people," Very unlikely, "...train." The way he said train was so distasteful that it was almost funny. And if the phrasing wasn't funny enough, he pulled a face of disgust. Avery liked physical activity more than the next guy, but he didn't like fighting. Not that he was a pacifist, but he preferred tricks to brawn.
