"Quit your whining and hold still, you make it hard on the maids to measure you correctly for your tuxedo you will be wearing for the ball tomorrow night." His mother replied.
"I understand that, but why must I choose a wife there? Can't we just be friends or something?" He asked holding still.
"No, if you want peace, you'll have to find one and trust me, when you go, you might change your mind. Now run off to bed, you'll have to be up early to make it there on time." She replied.
"Yes mother," James replied and jumped down from the small box he stood on his and ran down the hall and into his room, thoughts ran through his head as he started to drift off to sleep. Would he really find a wife there? What nation would she be from? Finally after about an hour, he fell asleep.

Kai broke away from the soilder he was fighting, sweat dripping down his forehead and arms. What did his father want? He hardly ever spoke to Kai and now he was inturrupting his pratice. He turned to face his father who was standing arms folded at the gate of the keep.
'I see you conveniently forgot, as usual.'
Kai sheathed his sword.
'Forgot what?'
'Show more respect when you speak to me!' his father was angry, it was nothing new 'you are supposed to be attending a fitting for your clothing that you will wear to the ball tomorrow night.'
Ah. Kai ran a hand through his blonde hair. No wonder he had forgotten about the fitting. This whole ball for the peace of the nation was a joke, a joke he did not intend to be a part of. He turned his expressionless green eyes on his father and drew his sword again.
'I have drills to finish if i'm ever going to become the head of the Earth Kingdom.'
'But the ball!'
'Father, you know as well as I that it is a game. The nations cannot exist without war and just because I consent to marry a princess from another nation does not mean the war will end. The woman I marry will have to prove her worth, I want no pampered child tainting the stock of the Earth Kingdom. Also the Fire Kingdom will be there. They have killed too many of our people, I cannot forgive them.'
It was the longest speach he'd ever given. Kai shut his mouth then knowing that his blunt words would be easy for his father to understand. The old man shook his head.
'I know my son, and I would not force you to join a farce but your mother wishes it.'
Kai narrowed his eyes. That was a low blow. His mother was dying, the whole kingdom knew, and if it was her final wish that the kingdom should try to be at peace then Kai must comply.
'Then for my lady mother I shall, but dressing up is not an option.'
He turned away from his father then, completely blocking out the fact he was ever there at all. Pulling his sword in one quick flowing motion he began to rain blows down on the soldier he was practicing with, fighting out his anger untill it was absorbed the the very ground he walked on. The moon watched him fight his way deep into the night but not even a prince can stop time and soon the dawn was uppon him...

After hearing the large door come to a close, Melody threw herself onto her king-sized bed. She snuggled against the many fluffy pillows that adorned it & closed her eyes for a moment before flipping herself over onto her back. She stared at the silk handing atop her canopy bed, her facial expression reflecting her thoughtfulness. Tomorrow was going to be a very important day & she knew that it was her duty to make things right, but she still couldn't help herself but wonder about things. Since a little girl, she always wondered what her prince would look like. She always dreamt of how they would live happily ever after, just like in the fairytales. & although she was older now, Melody continued to dream of it. Not of a happily ever after, but of pure happiness.
"Will I find that happiness with one of them?" Melody whispered to herself, falling asleep soon after.

'Prince Kai! You must wake up!'
An irritating high pitched voice squeaked in his ear. Even before he'd opened his eyes Kai could sense the urgency around him. What was going on?
'The ball Pince Kai, you'll be late.'
The deep voice drowned out the previous squeaking. Kai slowly opened his eyes to see the Army Captin's son leaning against the far wall. His arms were crossed and there was a mischevious grin on his face.
'Darius.'
Kai aknowledged his friend before turning to the young maid. She was hurrying about the room in a panic holding a green sash and muttering fluently in a forgien tounge. With an effort he pulled himself out of bed and started to dress himself. The trousers were a tightly fitted black riding pair, a white shirt, a black button up waistcoast and finally...he leaned over to the maid and pulled the sash from her hand. She sighed and sat down, obviously relieved. A quick glance in the mirror told him he looked like an fool. He never wore cerimonial clothes. Darius laughed at the expression on Kai's face.
'It could be worse, you could have to dress as a woman.'
Kai didn't find that even slightly amusing.
'I take it you're my escort?'
'Yes.'
The trip to the stables was quick and in silence. Kai's stallion was already saddled and ready to go along with Darius' charger. The two men mounted and rode out towards the center lands. Kai could feel the dread building with every mile he covered...

"Hey Thomas, what do you think this ball will be like?" He called.
"I don't know, pretty girls, people from all over, pretty girls." Thomas called back.
"Is that all you think about?" James called back.
"No! I also think about what they're wearing!" Thomas joked.
James rolled his eyes, he hoped that he could get more out of this then marriage, even though he was fire nation he had a heart. He wanted peace and happiness, something that his brothers didn't want, or have.

In no time at all, Melody was dried & dressed in a beautiful dress, the dark violet color of the main fabric matching her eyes color perfectly. Her hair was brushed & placed into elegant curls whilst natural makeup was put on her. & finally, she put on her heels.
"My goodness, doesn't she look absolutely beautiful?" Melody's mother said with a sweet smile as her daughter got into the white carriage, tears evident on the corners of her eyes.
"Yes, that she does," replied the father with a nod. "Don't you worry, my dear; she'll do well."

And that he's arrogant of all Fire Kingdomers Darius thought with a chuckle. He was really looking forward to the meeting with the Fire Kingdoms prince.
'The princesses of Air and Water, do you know their names?' he asked.
'No.'
Darius sighed. 'Well it will make a good conversation starter anyway.'
Sometimes he thought Kai would rather be a soilder than a prince.
Kai dismounted and handed his horse to a stable boy at the same moment a white carriage went past. Darius whistled. Even Kai could understand why. The girl inside had been beautiful. He was trying to bite his tounge and complete the ball as quickly as he could feeling it useless as there would never be peace. Now he had an up side to his night. If there were other girls that pretty he might have quite a pleasent distraction from the torment caused by the prescence of the subjects of the Fire Kingdom.
'Shall we?'
He waved a hand casually towards the marble steps. Darius nodded and the two men entered the White Palace.

'Kai, why don't we go and talk to that princess? It will take your mind off that guy in the corner.'
The only problem was they had to pass the fire kingdoms prince to get to the princess. Kai nodded. Anything to stop him from attacking that boy. As they passed Kai's glared at the other prince, cracks appearing in the walls. Hie eyes seemed to say there would be no peace between them. That was exactly what they were saying. Darius sighed.
'Prince Kai, the whole point of this ball to to make peace between the nations.'
He knew Kai would just ignore him.

"James.......... em excuse me, Prince James, shall we go outside, the air seems to be tense and that's not a good sign." Thomas warned, looking at the nobles that glanced at them.
"No, we should stay, if we went outside, all that would prove is that we can't stand thier judgment." James replied.
Thomas sighed, "Very well."
James glanced once more at the princess, but didn't move, he felt invisible in the corner and that's the way he liked it, but he hoped she would notice him.
