Maisie is a level-headed person. She's terrified that she'll end up married to a rich man and just become another pretty toy on his shelf. She wants to be allowed to live her own life. She's not afraid of dying, but of course, she doesn't want to. She's a bit cynical. She plays the piano and love little more than music. If she had her way, she'd run away from this new "perfect" America to Europe or Asia. She thinks she'd be free there.
She is not quick to fall in love. She doesn't trust people. Her entire life has been a series of circumstances that other people put her in and that has made her cold and indifferent. She does not think that she could ever love someone she's been trained to marry. She'd be resentful and bitter. She knows that she could only love someone that she chose for herself.

History:

She grew up in a large family. She had an older brother and a three younger siblings, her favorite being the youngest, Eloise. She spent all of her childhood with Eloise. When she turned fourteen her parents spent their entire life savings shipping her off to a school to learn to become the perfect wife. For the first year, she spent most of her free time writing letters to Eloise. Around her fifteenth birthday the letters stopped coming.
Her oldest brother wrote to her saying that Eloise had died of pneumonia after falling into a lake around December. Her parents couldn't afford to take her to a hospital. She blames solely herself for Eloise's death. If she hadn't gone to this stupid school they could have saved little Ellie. After that, she stopped sending letters to her family. She cut herself off from them entirely. She is now completely alone.
