Ryota is a very pleasant person to be around--for the most part. He likes to make fun of other people and test boundaries, often going too far and getting himself punched, but this is less out of malice and more out of trying to judge how far he can go with a person. Used to being indoors and isolated for most of his life, Ryota has always had trouble picking up on social cues and, for the first half of his life, was often left flustered when it came to any kind of social interaction. Blunt, smarter than most, and enjoying a good teasing, he was often interpreted as a jerk whenever trying to break the ice with someone. As a result, he tries to correct his behavior by saying all manner of horrible things and taking notes on people's reactions--then, based on the results, he can judge how to behave around them.
Predictably, he's already ruined any relationship potential with people by the time he establishes what he can and cannot say, leaving him rejected and without anyone to actually call his friend. He's still trying, though--Ryota is a very patient individual, and he's determined to find the person that he can 'break the ice' with and befriend. Beyond his vaguely awkward and generally offensive outside, anyone who gets to know him will find Ryota is a very genuine and sweet person who wishes no harm on anyone. He loves people and he loves the idea of being able to bond with someone. It's just getting someone to bond with him that's proving to be a problem.

With a terrible immune system compared to most, Ryota has spent most of his life stuck in bed. He's used to entertaining himself with coloring packets, movies, sitcoms, and joke books, and though those are usually enough for him, it's never been quite enough to fend off the ever-present loneliness. His parents knew this, and in an attempt to help, spent most--if not all--of their free time with their child. They'd find several things to talk about--the movies he'd watch, human biology (usually a tangent from the occasional "why do I get sick so much"), and, Ryota's favorite, their work. His parents were both eye doctors, and extraordinary ones, at that. Being a more intellectually-driven child, Ryota took an immediate interest in what they did, quickly catching on and eventually helping his parents with their work. The days he felt well enough, he'd come with them to work, and when stuck at home he'd research optometry for hours. It was fascinating to him.
He spent tons of time online discussing it, and his genius quickly became apparent--time went on, and eventaully Hope's Peak sent a letter to his home, recognizing Ryota for his talents and offering him a spot in the school. He accepted, ecstatic.
