"I'd lived my life the only way I had known, but when the pillars of that life came crashing down I did not stand and watch them fall. I turned and walked away."
Ramza's personality changes somewhat throughout his story. In the beginning, his motivation to fight and protect others was just to uphold his family name. He even states that "he turned out worst of the four siblings and is aware of it," but after Tietra's death by the hand of Argath and his older brother Zalbaag, he decides to leave House Beoulve, becoming a mercenary with Goffard Gaffgarion. A year after Tietra's death, Ramza is shown as a selfless hero whose only wish was to protect people from injustice, even claiming that "he had no wish of changing the world for just a select few while others suffer". As the story progresses, Ramza learns that a name means nothing if injustice must be used to uphold it, a belief that Ramza maintains even when the church brands him as a heretic. In the second battle against Barich in Necrohol, he proclaims that a man without pride can never be free, showing how much he grew throughout the story, becoming a hero who fights more for others than for himself.
Usually a knights armor and a sword; however, he is capable of equipping lighter clothing as well as various other weapons including axes, maces, samurai swords, and knives. He excels in his squire class with the ability Mettle, reflecting his great diplomacy skills as well as his speech skills as a leader. This also reflects that instead of accomplishing his goals through superhuman power like most of Final Fantasy's heroes, he fights and struggles like any normal man. His Mettle skills allow him to increase his speed, strength, and overall power depending on the skills he uses. He can also cure minor status ailments such as poison and blind with the Heal ability. The peak of his ability come from his final move Ultima learned after being attacked with it as a summoner learns Zodiac.
Ramza is the bastard soon of the great "Heavenly Knight" Balbanes Beoulve of the great Beoulve noble family and half-brother to Dycedarg and Zalbaag. From a young age he trained to be a knight at the knight's academy with his trusted friend Delita. After meeting and saving Argath from Death Corpse bandits he set out to help him save the Marquis of Elmdor and is then dispatched on a mission to destroy a Death Corpse base where he fights and defeats Milleuda Folles. A rift is formed between Ramza and Argath after Ramza spares Milleuda after the battle. They then return to Eagrose Castle to learn Tietra, Delita's sister, has been kidnapped by the Death Corpse.
A frontal assault on the Brigade positions is planned, but Delita wants to sneak around behind them and rescue Tietra. Argath's contempt for people of lower classes leads to a quarrel between him and Delita, which Ramza breaks up by kicking Argath out of his squad. Ramza and Delita then launch their attempt to rescue Tietra, but kill Milleuda in the process, thereby invoking the rage of her brother Wiegraf Folles, the leader of the Corpse Brigade, who wanted to avenge his sister but is ultimately defeated by Ramza and Delita, giving him no other choice but to escape. This culminates in a struggle at Ziekden Fortress, in which Delita's sister is killed by the very people that were supposed to rescue her. Ramza realizes that the treatment of commoners by the Northern Sky and the Beoulves is unacceptable, and joins Delita in his retaliatory attack on Argath, who was leading the Northern Sky force attacking Ziekden Fortress and the killer of Tietra. After the battle, the fort explodes, and Ramza flees, deserting the Order and his family, thinking that Delita died in the explosion with Tietra.
Afterwards Ramza changes his last name to his mothers in order to distance himself from the Beoulve family and joins a mercenary band led by Gafgarion. This doesn't last long as Delita appears and kidnaps Princess Ovelia during their mission to protect her. Wanting to meet Delita again and save the princess Ramza sets out to rescue her with Agrias and Gafgarion. Gafgarion later betrays and is defeated by Ramza twice. Ramza later uncovers the Lucavi Plot, the churches plan to revive St. Ajora, when Cardinal Delacroix transforms into Queklain. Afterwards Ramza sets out to foil the churches plot despite being branded a heretic by the church. The church kidnaps Alma, Ramza's sister, and in his quest to rescue her Ramza destroys each of the Lucavi beasts and breaks up the war between Larg and Goltanna (This is helped as Larg is killed by Dycedarg and Goltanna by Delita). In the end St Ajora is finally summoned in Alma's body and Ramza fights and separates the two before finishing her final form Altima. Ramza and Alma's history after the battle is murky at best and were thought killed in the battle. Only Orran's writings preserved Ramza's place in history.
