Echo || A lingering trace or effect.

King || Chess. the chief piece of each color, whose checkmating is the object of the game; moved one square at a time in any direction.

She lost count a very long time ago, her physical appearance seems to take on that of a 10 year old due to the fact that no one ever puts any suspicion in children.

Short, Echo has always been small.

Isn't it rude to ask a lady her weight?

{β˜› Ⓗ⒢ⒾⓇ ⒸⓄⓁⓄⓇ ☚}
Her hair is the color of white so light it almost appears to reflect the colors that bounce around it. Some might say that Echo's hair is a rainbow, a multitude of hues, when in truth, it is merely a silvery white.

{β˜› β’Ίβ“Žβ’Ί ⒸⓄⓁⓄⓇ ☚}
Her eyes are tinged pink, soft, inquisitive. They most always hold fear or tears in them.

Echo has scars all over her body. She was tortured for nearly three years and bears the evidence of it on her body.

{β˜› ⒼⒺⓃⒺⓇ⒢Ⓛ β’Άβ“…β“…β’Ίβ’Άβ“‡β’Άβ“ƒβ’Έβ’Ίβ˜š }
When a demon experiences terrible trauma, it is not uncommon for their physical traits to change to reflect the change. Echo's body has slowly morphed, changing almost completely. She looks nothing like her old appearance, as though she has evolved into a completely different person. Her skin and soft and porcelain, marred by the scars that have been inflicted upon her. The largest one is on her stomach, from the time she had been poisoned and had to have extensive surgery to fix her insides. Echo's head is perfectly ovular, set with two pink gem stones for eyes. Her lips are thin and tremble easily, while her nose is as small as a button. Like most demons, Echo's ears are pointed; which is what set them apart from humans. Echo's hair is a silvery white, but in the light, it reflects the multitude of colors surrounding her, which can make it look pink or purple.

Now, let's move on to Echo's, erm, peculiarity. Normally, protruding from her back are what almost appears to be two black figures made up of bones, but they were sawed off during her time in captivity. Hanging from these are a multitude of gems, each one representing a different element. Each time one is used, a gem is broken and it can take up to one full day for a gem to regenerate. Hidden underneath her clothing is not one, but two features. One being her tail, which ends in a spade-like shape. This too, was clipped while captive. The other being two slightly pointed ears that at a first glance, are easy to miss.

I don't know my name
I don't play by the rules of the game
So you say I'm just trying
Just trying.

So I heard you are my sister's friend
You get along quite nicely
You ask me why I cut my hair
And changed myself completely

I don't know my name
I don't play by the rules of the game
So you say I'm just trying
Just trying

I am lost trying to get found
In an ocean of people
Please don't ask me any questions
There'll be a valid answer
I'll just say,

That I don't know my name
I don't play by the rules of the game
So you say I'm just trying

I now know my name!
I don't play by the rules of the game
So you say, I'm not trying
But I'm trying
To find my way

Echo had always been the black sheep of the family. Deemed a failure at birth, she was destined for a life in the East Tower. There, Echo was subjected to experiment after experiment. She grew up in a cage, her sisters occasionally visiting to check up on her progress. It was a life that did not allow much freedom, but Echo did not mind it because she had never known anything else. She was never supposed to be summoned and yet, the first time she had done so, Echo was eager. Her sisters rooted her on, training her on what to expect and prepare for. Echo merely wanted to please her first Master, who was only interested in the demon to use as a tool. She made Echo sleep at the foot of her bed and if she was bad, on the floor. Still, the demon did as she was told, not wanting to go back to the East Tower. It was due to Echo's failure that her first Master had died, having been possessed by the whims of a Baron and forced to slaughter her Master with her own hands.

They did not hold it against the little blonde demon, knowing that she had, had no will power. Still, the Tower Society kept a close eye on her. Her second Master was not much better, but Echo still preferred being bound to him rather than being subject to experimentation in the East Tower once more. Echo was fine with it, so long as she had warm food in her belly and was able to sleep late on the weekends. He hit her, but made Echo promise never to tell anyone. She agreed, taking the beatings silently and hiding them with long sleeves and pants. It was the Director who had taken notice. He promised Echo freedom, that he would not hold it against her if she killed him. Echo followed his orders, but instead of being rewarded, she was punished and sent to the East Tower once more. The Director freed her after nearly a year and contracted Echo as his side demon, to perform the work he did not want to dirty his hands with.

It was Addison LaFleur who approached Echo, the demon still swayed by pretty words. When chaos broke loose during the Second Impact, Addison gave Echo a knife to protect the Director. The knife was cursed and instead of protecting him, Echo killed him in front of everyone, sealing her fate. She was done with humans and cursing the world, was dragged into isolation. Back to the East Tower, where she was awaiting a match to breed. Echo spent her time behind bars, devouring books and food, allowed to shower once a week and use the bathroom three times a day. It was not an ideal life, but the demon figured it was better than being tethered to a human.

Until Flourspar came along. Echo did not like her, at first. She was mistrusting of the kindness, believing Flo to be disingenuous and far too giving. Echo warmed up to her soon enough and was forced to watch as Flourspar became Baroness Zinnia. After the Third Impact, her life was further turned upside down and Echo was now bound to Hawk. The two set off to Berlin to help face off against the vampire threat that began to overtake the humans. The two were captured by Iflet Seylum and held in the basement of the Seylum mansion. Echo was tortured for information, not only by Iflet, but by the other demons. Echo would not give them what they wanted and between torture sessions, Iflet would force toxins into her body to keep her sedated. She lived in a world of nightmares for three years and Hawk, having been turned into a vampire, was unable to help her.

Freed once and caught again, Echo was forced beneath the thumb of Baron Lipidus. He ravaged her body, hoping to impregnate her with an egg. At this point, Echo felt numb. Catatonic to the world and ready to die, she was rescued again by her sister Melody. Scientist Wei deemed her unfit for duty, beyond the hope of recovery, Echo was now slated to be sent to a demon rehabilitation center in Norway.

Echo fears being left and forgotten in Norway forever.

Sometimes in life there were occasions that made you believe that there was no way something as lofty and as aloof as destiny could possibly be true. Other times there were situations where you knew without a doubt destiny was real and true. Right now, Mara LaFleur couldn't help but believe that destiny brought her and Echo back together. Though from Echo's first words it became obvious that she didn't remember anything. An injury after the battle? A result from the fight with Messiah? "I -" The pinkette closed her mouth. Not for the first time, she and Echo had their bond cut apart. Echo had a bad habit of losing her memories, and Mara lost hers once as well. The familiar pain in her chest continued to build.

Once again, she was forgotten, wasn't she?

"I'm... no one. I'm just Mara LaFleur." She decided to keep it simple. Echo was enjoying her freedom, but Mara was still stuck under surveillance. If Echo and her restarted their relationship there was a risk that Echo would be spotted and reported to the authorities. Baroness Nova was a well known face after all, how could someone not know them? "You're pretty famous. You're a King, who wouldn't know one of the Kings?" While Mara could start the friendship all over again, the truth was Mara did not know what was wrong with her, why she was always sleeping, each time she closed her eyes her strange sleep was longer and longer. While Mara knew Echo would drop everything to try and help her, the pinkette didn't want to tie Echo down again. She was finally free, Mara wasn't going to take that away from her.

Mara seemed to understand what was happening from Mara's reaction. "Be careful around Europe, you two. The Tower Society's doing regular sweeps of major European cities to track down any last stragglers." Pandora warned them both, putting her holocane back on the ground, glowing blue. "It would be safest to go to Africa or South America. The sweeps there haven't started yet." Both Mara and Pandora wanted Echo to enjoy her freedom to the fullest, without anyone holding her back. "Harrod's is that way." Mara pointed down the street, forcing a smile.

Echo tilted her head to the side in question, wondering why these two seemed so familiar to her and yet so foreign. She attempted to reach inside of her head, but there was a block, as always. She closed her eyes for a moment, ablet o see the image in her mind, but unable to describe it. "Wait," Echo stopped before Gwenyth could turn them away. "You're her, aren't you?" She reached into the folds of her coat, withdrawing a photo that was smeared in blood. It was what she had wanted to put in her locket. "I can't-I can't remember, but I've been trying to find you in my mind." It was clear Echo was frustrated with herself, with her missing memories. Gwenyth placed a hand on her shoulder, squeezing it. "If you were no one, then why would I have this?" She whispered to herself, suddenly uncertain of everything.

"There are some questions the universe can't answer." Gwenyth said softly, attempting to pull Echo away. It was clear from Mara's face that she was in pain. Echo reached into her other pocket, taking out the locket that Gwenyth had bargained for. "Take this, okay? I don't know what it means, but you should have this." She placed it in Mara's hand, closing it around the necklace. Then Echo turned away and followed Gwenyth into the darkness. The two of them walked quietly in the snow for a while, then, "I guess we'll have to change our flights." Gwenyth nodded, "I guess so." the ally ended on a busy segway, a cross walk tithering with life. They walked opposite the flow, Harrod's brightly lit interior greeting them in the snowy darkness.

Over the din, with all of the sights and sounds and smells, they had no idea that someone was tailing them. "Hide your tail," Gwenyth suggested and Echo nodded, wrapping it around her thigh underneath her dress. "Chris, what are you doing?" Doll asked, "we have to go home, Sonata is waiting for us." Chris looked back in the direction he had been heading, shaking his head. "I thought I saw a ghost," Doll took his arm, staring at him strangely. They both harbored a secret, one that they could never tell the other. They had let someoene go. "I want a bear!" Echo decided, removing her coat as they entered the warm building. "No, those are insanely expensive. We can go to the food hall and get some sweets, I hear they're supposed to be good."

The next morning, they boarded a flight to South Africa. They were upgraded to business class, the flight taking a total of eleven hours. When they landed in Cape Town, Echo was surprised at the lack of snow. "I've never seen a place not covered in snow," she mused. Winter in South Africa was cold, but very few times did it actually snow. There was an ocean and a beach, a giant mountain anywhere they looked, and busy shops. "Look, it says we can go on safari. I want to see animals," Echo said as they passed a billboard. Gwenyth laughed, "Alright, we'll go on safari then." Echo sank back in her seat, she lookes around, expecting the pink haired girl to be there and realizing that she was not.

|| The Death of a Bachelor || Panic! At the Disco ||

The world was a wide and extraordinary place. "Are you sure you don't want me to come with you?" Gwenyth asked as she packed her bags, having been summoned back to Queen Riven's side. Echo nodded with a smile one would have never expected of the demon. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath in, "I can do this, don't worry. Queen Riven needs you," Gwenyth nodded, but it was clear she was unhappy about it. They hugged in the hotel room, then Gwenyth opened the window and turned into a bat, somethign all vampires could do. She flew off into the night, Echo waving until the bat was out of sight. She sat on the edge of the bed, smoothing out her map over her lap and planning her route. From here, she would go to Asia, then North America, then South America, then, hopefully, Australia. Her final plan was to return to Europe, but when and how that would be, Echo did not know.

When her money ran dry, she stayed in cities, working for food and board until she had enough for a plane or train ticket to the next place. She wrote to no one, made no mention of her last name and carefully hid the fact that she was a demon from all, recalling the warning Gwenyth had given her. Five years had past, Echo was now ten years old. She studied alongside monks in a monestary atop Kathmandu, she climbed to the base camp of Mt. Everest, learned how to make mochi in Japan, slept under the stars in India, and accidentally joined a revolution in America. She did a great many things and finding herself was one of them. She knew who she was once more, after a painful month in bodily stasis with a magistrate in Patagonia, Echo awoke atop a snowy mountain, shivering, with an old mage pressing tea into her hands that tasted like dirt and flowers. She starred into the cup, wondering when the last time she had a good cuppa was.

"I think it is time you return home, Echo. There are a great many people that miss you," Echo nodded, aware of the hole by her side. "I know," she spoke softly. "Your third eye has been open, your gates have been flooded, your heart is ready. I will leave you with a parting gift," she gave Echo a purple crystal on a string and disappeared. Echo wrapped the cord around her wrist and packed up her belongings. Over the five years, she had sold much of her property and now only carried a backpack with the essentials. A flight from Patagonia to London cost an arm and a leg. With the last of her money, Echo flew home. Having no passport, she sneaked off the plane the same way she always did and left Heathrow Airport, heading for what she knew to be a changed city.

Freedom was nice, but it was missing something and that was purpose. Her hair was long again, even braided it swept down her back and nearly touched the floor. She wore a tattered red jacket, skin tight jeans, and winter boots. London looked the same, if not a bit spiffier and cleaner. Echo exhaled in relief, that at least, had not changed. She smiled as she took a step forward, but did not get far. "You there, stop!" Almost immediately, Echo was apprehended by two Tower Society Agents. She groaned, having been hoping to avoid this. "Sorry, but I can't!" She bounced light off of a small mirror and her pocket and took off running, heading for what she hoped was still neutral ground. Her stomach sunk as she reached the ally, noticing it was not there. No, that couldn't be right.

The Hope for Peace Museum was now an empty lot. "Stop!" Someone called behind her, Echo falling to her knees in the snow. It was still winter, always winter. She had seen sunshine and warmth and had come back to this dreaded place. Why had she returned? An image of pink hair and a warm smile entered her mind. Oh yeah, that was why. "Under order of the Tower Society, we have to apprehend, you, demon, and bring you in for registration." She did not resist as they cuffed her arms behind her and led her to a car. She was quiet, listening to their conversation, but it was simply idle chat. They marched her into intake, where other demons were waiting, anxious, fidgety. "You there," one pointed to her. "Come with me," Echo nodded, rising. They rode up the lift, the halls clean, refurbished, restored. It was busier than Echo had ever seen it.

"Sit here and wait," he led Echo to a comfy chair, uncuffing her wrists. It did not take long for someone else to arrive. She adjusted her eye patch, sitting up a bit straighter. "Who did you say this demon was again?" Director Wei said as he entered, sitting across from her. She did not blame him for not recognizing her. Echo was thinner, leaner, than she had ever been. Her hair was long and with her eye patch, well, it was easy enough to mistake her for someone else. "Echo, Echo King." His head snapped up and he laughed. "Really? You're going to come in here and pretend to be a dead hero? Very nice, very nice indeed. Alright I've seen enough take-"

Her boney wings snapped open, the diamonds hanging off of them, unmistakable. She reached up with her cuffed hands, lifting the eyepatch to reveal the ugly claw marks that ran across her face. "Oh my stars," Wei breathed. "If you need to, you can check my bar code. It's my you blimey bloody-" he held up a hand, smiling for stars knows what purpose. "It really is you," he laughed. "Yeah, yeah, now take these off." She reached forward and he unlocked the cuffs around her wrists. "I don't understand, you had freedom, why did you come back?" He asked quietly. "Because I missed good tea and was going to lie low while I thought of a plan to make a grand entrance, but apparently I was being tailed because I entered England illegally," she put quotes around illegal.

It did not take long for word to spread, Echo was confined to the office while Wei worked out the details with immigration, but she had a steady stream of visitors since her return. Pandora, Shiro, Keron, all matched with new humans who oggled at Echo with a mix of misbelief and awe. They updated her on everything that had happened, informing her of all of the changes. Melody and Flame were still at large, to her relief. Doll and Christopher adopted a second child, a son. His name was Luke and he was a bumbling little prat, supposedly. There was a statue to commemorate everyone that had died, which had Echo's face on it. That would be the second memorial that she was on. Queen Charlotte, despite her young age, found a boyfriend and they were engaged. Ariel made a full recovery, but returned to Ogygia, where she could live out a proper life as a mermaid.

"What about Flo and Silence?" Echo asked, recalling her brush with them on the street, five years ago. Shiro was quiet a moment. "I think it's better if you heard it from them."

|| The Ballad of Mona Lisa|| Panic! At the Disco ||

A lot of things can happen as the years trail on by.

"For the heroes who have survived, please step forward." Queen Charlotte stood at the stand, in her finest golden dress, a series of medals in her hands. All those who returned from Cascade Bau alive kneeled on the stage, facing Queen Charlotte as one by one she wheeled in front of them. "Thank you." She would say. "For the Crown." They would reply, kissing her hand as she placed the medal around their necks with a delicate, loving touch. Would they all be gathered like this again? Mara didn't know but she hoped she wouldn't sleep through it all.

The flowers bloomed as the music swelled. Thanks to Pan poking her really hard Mara was able to attend the party. "I can't believe it." Sana's voice shook as Ariel sung on the stage, singing her heart out. She wore her medal with pride, giggling as it swung around her as she sang. "She's really going." Ariel had lived through many hardships, living with Seele, then joining the Tower Society. Still, after a long service, she'd had enough of war. "Thank you everyone for being my friend! I'll come by and visit sometimes!" Ariel ran and gave Mara a hug, embracing her tightly. "We'll meet again, I promise. So don't stay asleep, sleepyhead." Holding hands with Lana, the mirror opened. Lana would be taking her to Ogygia and the two would have a private farewell just for the two of them.

The results were laid out on the paper. There was a copy with braille on it too. "Do you need help reading it? There's a few big words." Pandora grinned, a playful smirk on her face. "No... I understand." It was strange, what was this feeling? The pinkette didn't quite know what to make of it. "Yes." Director Wei said gravely, putting his hand over hers. "I want to work closely with you two for the next few years. I'm sorry to disrupt your retirement, but this is very interesting." The scientist in Wei was acting up again. There was a reason he headed the science division before ascending to Director. "You're evolving, Mara. We just don't know to what yet."

There was a poke at her arm. Mara opened her eyes, feeling exhausted. "Tell me what's going on. It's the news, but I can't see what's happening." Pandora pulled a sleepy Mara over to the next room where the holotelevision was playing. There was sounds of battle and the newscaster sounded panicked as she read her lines. "A new and restored Team Holmes has arrived! They're world famous know, they're going to save everyone!" A new Team Holmes? "They... look like they're... doing well." Mara was sleeping more now but she didn't want to miss this at least. "Christopher and Doll seem to be leading this new team!" The newscaster cried, moving to dodge falling rubble. "Mare and Pray are two veterans, newly paired together, and they're already excelling! Mason and Polaire are also new additions, but they're living up to the name!" The new Team Holmes, all old faces. "Looks like... you were replaced." Pan flushed a little, reaching her hand out to touch the screen. How much did Pan miss being part of that team?

The graduation ceremony had way more demons attending the stages than Mara could have expected. She was only really here for one reason though. "Little Pandora Vale!" Malmortis announced her name and she walked up on the stage, an expectant smile on her face. A glowing red wing sprouted proudly from her back, Baroness Occasus was here. "D-don't call me that." Little Pan exclaimed with a blush, eyes wide. "I'm not little anymore!" That didn't stop Pan and Mara from cheering her on though. "Have you decided where you want to go?" Malmortis asked the graduate and she nodded, looking onto the stage. "I was offered a place as Shiro's nurse assistant. I think I'm going to accept the offer." Since Pray was back in active duty, Shiro was looking for a new assistant and Little Pan was just the one she was waiting for.

Mara fell to the ground, panting. What was going on, why was there a Baron attacking London? Were they back like this again? Her wings spread, ready to get into action. "Don't fight, it's dangerous." Pandora warned, pulling her back. "Wei doesn't want you using powers until we figure out this evolution thing!" Mara struggled, her eyes glowing amethyst. "But I have to. I can help-" A giant hand reached down to pick up Baron Horace. "Okay, you can stop now." Long golden hair flowed down as Baron Horace was lifted into the air. "My name is Baroness Volante, the Baroness of Joy! I won't let you hurt anyone!" Flo stared at the giant in wonder. "That has to be Sonata... right?" Pandora giggled, nodding. "Looks like she grew up well, didn't she?

...

"Wake up! Wake up!" Mara opened her eyes groggily. How many weeks was she asleep this time? It was getting a little ridiculous now. "Echo's back! Come with me, we're going to the Tower Society to meet her!" Pandora sounded so excited. Could it really be true?

Mara's eyes widened as she saw that familiar tuft of blonde, except longer now, and with a missing eye. Could Echo really be back? Mara walked forward, touching her face. "It's really you. How did freedom treat you?" She grinned, trying not to pass out. "Tell them the news." Shiro urged, nudging her from behind. How would Echo feel about it? Mara didn't know. "I'm evolving. I'm sleeping a lot now... but they're looking into it." Demon evolution, what did it mean? Mara didn't know but - "No, not that, the other thing!" Shiro's eyes sparkled with mirth.

Other thing?

"Well-"

The microphone whistled as Director Wei began his speech, interrupting Mara mid-answer. "As we all know, I'm getting on in ages. With the Third Impact a distant memory, and immigration of refugees nearly complete, I'm now ready to step down from being the Director of the Tower Society. I was training a successor for quite a while, and I think it's time to reveal the next Director." He cleared his throat and continued. "Mara LaFleur and Pandora Vale, our next Joint-Directors, please step forward."

Mara helped Pan up, waving apologetically at Echo. The cousins stood on the stage, one blind, the other evolving. They would have to rely on each other now for this new era. "As the new Joint-Directors, we're going to make our first proclamation." Pandora began, holding her arm out. "As of now, all demons are free and will be given citizenship. All demons can now live their lives as they choose, as long as they follow the laws of the land." If they respected the laws, the demons would have all the same rights as humans get to enjoy. "But even if you're free, feel free to give us your resume and cover letter if you wish to continue your career at the Tower Society." With a single breath, all demons were finally given freedom.
