While he can still put on a smile and have that laid back attitude of his youth; an observant person can tell it's a facade. It's clear that his past has darkened him somewhat, but there are times when he seems like a completely different person.

History

After graduating as one of the top ranked SeeDs he chose to join a team in Trabia, where the team was sent on one hectic mission after another. The team was given little time to rest and the missions may as well have been suicide, but after learning about a few key players, he now knows they were being set up to fail. His own benefactor Luca Kessler, was a member of SCORPIA and had been using him as an unwitting “inside man”. After his capture he had some time to go over the events in his head. The flash of light that debilitated him was a quick burst of Para Magic Holy that emanated from his own armor. How naive he was to just blindly accept equipment from a man he didn't entirely trust to begin with. A mistake he'll never make again.

After his battle with Balian he was left for dead and it very well may have claimed him had it not been for the two soldiers that came to collect his body. They provided him with enough energy to survive as well as summon Diablos. The winged demon carried him as far as the Centra Continent where he later blacked out. When he awoke, he was surrounded by the dead and his hands were stained with blood. By his side were two swords he recognized as Doombringers. The dead consisted of Forbidden and Tonberries. Somehow he'd slain them, but how was anybody's guess.

His current whereabouts are an ancient abandoned castle that used to be infested with monsters, but he hasn't been alone. When he arrived a woman known the world over as The Queen of Cards was waiting for him. “It was in the cards,” she told him. Apparently they were used for more than games. Diablos is also a constant companion, both as a familiar and a mental voice, but Kryse prefers to spend his time with the Queen or Chloe as she likes to be called. During her last reading she told him that he would be leaving to confront and reunite with his past.
