| Physical Description |
Tall and lean like a gymnast and with an admittedly feminine appearance, Masaru is not the manliest of men. Masaru has a pretty, feminine face and almost always has an odd little half-smile. His shoulder-length hair, the color a mix between orange and blonde, has bangs that curl in whatever way it pleases (often getting in the way of his bright, blue eyes) and tends to be pulled into a small ponytail or messy bun to be functional. He tends to wear nice clothes; a nice pair of slacks or jeans with a button-up of some type on most days, and he almost always has a dark blue scarf wrapped around his neck. He's always wearing a different type of jewelry from his own personal collection, and he always has an earring in.

As much as he hates the Sohma curse, he's not quite sure what he would do without that structure, without that role in his life. He's often torn between a need for freedom and a need to have that, however frustrating, burden where at least he knows where his place is. His greatest fear, after all, is being left by himself and hated, so even if it means he has to stay close to the family, it's better than being completely alone. He's managed to delude himself at this point that the Sohma clan knows best and that it's his duty to stay close to the "god". |

| History |
When Masaru was born, he seemed to be a perfectly ordinary baby. He came right on schedule, the delivery was as smooth as it could possibly be. Everything was fine until the doctor placed him in his mother's arms, and, instead of a child, there was a tiny snake. His father was horrified, but, as a Sohma who had thankfully been passed over by the curse, realized what was going on. His mother, however, was a different story. She had Ophidiophobia, an irrational and desperate fear of snakes. Her screams ricocheted throughout the room and into the halls while her quick-thinking husband picked up the snake and left the room.
As a child, Masaru's mother did try her best to take care of her child, but she was terrified him, treating him like a time bomb waiting to go off and always, always keeping a good distance between them. Between that and his father, a businessman whose travels took him far away, Masaru began to feel unloved, as if he weren't worth any affection. It only became worse when his maternal grandmother and a female cousin moved in to help his mother raise him while his father was gone. Perhaps feeding off of his mother's distaste for him but with none of the misguided matronly affection, his grandmother was always harsh and quick to criticize him while his cousin liked to pick on him for his effeminate features, all of this setting the course of Masaru's own dislike of most women and a deep-seeded insecurity.
Eventually, his mother could no longer bear living in fear and left taking her mother and niece with her. His father had no choice but to move back to the Sohma compound with his son so that someone could take care of him while he was gone on business trips. There, desperate for approval, he liked to tag along with the older children and often babied the younger ones. He also attempted to fix his gloomy personality in an attempt to be more pleasing to others. This worked quite well as he attended school and became increasingly popular. That wasn't to say that he didn't have problems- with a feminine appearance and flippant, flirtatious personality, he was bound to be picked on. After coming home one day battered and bruised, he learned how to defend himself and, although he doesn't like to, has been fighting his own battles(physically at least) ever since
After graduating high school, Masaru planned to attend a university outside of the country, working hard and earning scholarships until he finally had enough to pay his way. However, he was forbidden to attend. But for once in his life, Masaru decided not to play into the easiest or the most likable path and fought against the Head's orders for the first and, ultimately, last time. After an incident with Raiden that caused the jagged scar on his left shoulder, he gave up fighting against his orders and attended a nearby college, something he regrets to this day. Now he works at a popular cafe as a chef, barista, and occasionally a waiter, content to use his talent in cooking and charm to make a living.
|Thoughts on Other Characters|
WIP
Hisako/Ai-Chan/Monkey- Masaru is incredibly fond of Hisako and dotes on her constantly as he does for several of the younger Sohma children. Whenever she shows up at the cafe, he's always sure to give her something special, and, when she's feeling down, he does his best to offer a shoulder to cry on and a sympathetic ear.
Kutaki/Goat- Kutaki was one of the first people that Masaru met at the Sohma compound as a child and helped to bring him out of his shell. They're close to one another, both being insecure people, but Masaru tries his hardest to drag Kutaki out of her room in an attempt to try and help her become more extroverted.
Koji/Dragon- Masaru is not particularly close to Koji, but is at least on good terms with him. They go out together sometimes, frequently with Hisako in tow. He's generally amused when Koji loses his temper or throws a tantrum. Really, he likes Koji well enough, but doesn't trust him enough to let his mask falter if he can help it. Not that that's saying much; he tries to keep up appearances in front of everyone.
Keiko/Rat- Masaru is, admittedly, not Keiko's biggest fan. He doesn't try to talk to her, doesn't try to become her friend, and when he does interact with her is formal almost to a fault and the interactions never last long. This may be because he only sees her at the Sohma residence since they do no go to school together and if she ever shows up at the cafe while he's on shift, he usually gives her table to one of the other workers. He really can't stand the apathy, the lack of eye contact, and seemingly inhuman perfection, all of which brings up bad memories of his mother, grandmother, and cousin.
Mei/Horse- Masaru does not actually know Mei that well, but during the few times they've interacted, he thinks of her as a generally pleasant person to be around and with an admirable energy.
Choko/Rooster- Masaru can't help but to admire Choko's pleasant personality and honesty. They met during school one day when Choko was being bullied and he, the official big kid(by rule of being two years older), stopped the bully. They've been close friends ever since.
Chayme Reed- Unknown
Raiden/God- It's not blind adoration that makes Masaru listen to Raiden, nor is it pity or sympathy(although there is a bit of that). No, he listens to him because he has to and just maybe cares about the kid. Oftentimes, when Raiden goes overboard, it's Masaru who has to clean up his messes.
Ichirou/Boar- Masaru and Ichirou are a pretty dynamic duo. They grew up together, often hanging out at first because of their shared age and, eventually, because they were totally bros. You can almost always bet that whenever one of them goes out drinking or partying, the other one is there, usually encouraging stupid behavior.
Suki Angelvine- Unknown
Eri/Rabbit- Like Hisako, Masaru loves to dote on Eri and is very affectionate with her. She's like a little ray of sunshine in such a dark family. He worries about her, however, and her martyr-like tendencies, and sometimes he has to step in when she tries to take the blame for something just to protect others.
Satoshi/Ox- Masaru and Satoshi (or just "Toshi" according to Masaru) get along extremely well. At first, it was just Masaru, who recognized a part of himself in the younger boy, annoying him until he finally opened up. After that, the roles were semi-reversed, Satoshi latching onto Masaru and his kindness and Masaru allowing it and reciprocating, enjoying the feeling of being needed. They are still incredibly close, Masaru supporting Satoshi every step of the way.
Seiki/Dog- Masaru considers himself good friends with Seiki and likes how friendly he is. When Seiki first arrived at the compound all those years ago, Masaru was one of the first if not the first person to welcome him to the compound. However, he does worry about just how loyal Seiki can be and wishes he wouldn't worry so much.
Ayumi/Tiger- Masaru likes to dote on Ayumi, like he does most of the younger Sohma's, and never objects to giving her a little treat from the cafe. He does worry about her, especially with all of the fights she gets in and how often she breaks the rules, just waiting for something awful to happen and hoping that he can prevent it.
Nozomu/Cat- The relationship between Masaru and Nozomu is actually quite mellow. Masaru didn't grow up with the same engrained hatred of the cat that most of the family did due to him arriving at the compound later in life. Occasionally, Masaru will get on his nerves by trying to get him to eat more or by his general cheerfulness, but, for the most part, their relationship is rather normal.
