Physical Description: Umbra originally manifested as a female Koopa with long hair, around Alex’s build, only made entirely out of an inky black sludge. She can transform into any form she pleases and alter the coloration of the sludge, however, making nailing down her true form impossible.
Personality: Umbra is sadistic and all in all creepy, being the embodiment of lust – she wants to bone pretty much anything that moves, regardless of gender, but not out of any actual love for them. Viewing other beings as nothing but toys, she is completely unrepentant about the evil she does, since it feels completely thrilling to her.
History: Summoned to the world when Alex’s girlfriend, Isabella, was murdered, Umbra turned into the Pure Shadow of Lust and was one of the representatives needed to summon the apocalypse… but when that plan failed she went off to do her own thing. But right in the middle of devouring souls, her old masters came back aiming to ritually consume hers for its power. Retreating as quickly as possible, Umbra now lives (kind of) on the side of justice, only because she feels it’s easier to stay there than go off on her own and take her chances…
Equipment: Umbra does not use or need equipment.
Abilities: Umbra’s sludgy body renders her immune to most traditional methods of attack and lets her shapeshift her form any way she pleases. She can also shoot streams of poison and sludge, cause poison to empower her physical blows, and call the souls she has consumed (oh, right, she consumes souls, in case you didn’t figure that out earlier) to fight for her – nothing on too grand a scale or she risks letting them go, and she would never have that.
Other: Umbra is a “hero” only because she’s safer there than on the other side. She makes no secret of how little she thinks of others, and will go right back to the side of darkness when it’s clear that her masters don’t want to ritually destroy what little remains of her soul.

Umbra (V2)'s Story

In a seedier part of Corona, several men wearing Haven-based football jerseys walk through down, getting death glares and verbal scorn from various people they pass by.
"Go back to Mama Uldritch, warmongers!" shouted one man.
"We don't appreciate your kind hanging around here acting like they own the place!" exclaimed another.
The Haven men, to their credit, do not shout back and keep walking, trying to find a way out of this seedy district. And possibly back to Haven. They aren't acting out, to be sure, but they're not going to wait around in Corona for someone to do something rash. Like hurt them.
"Aww..." came a distinct female voice from the doorway of a nearby shack. "Sorry about the unwelcome wagon, tourists..."
A shapely woman dressed in a barely-fitting red dress stepped out of her doorway, approaching the Haven men, who stop in their course, enraptured by her beauty.
"Maybe I could... make it up to you?" asked the woman, winking at one of the men in particular.
"You, eh... you lot go on ahead," said the winked-at man. "I'll catch up to you later."
The men playfully jab at the "lucky son of a gun" before laughing and keeping on walking. The lone Haven man left follows the woman back into her shack, where she shuts the door behind him. A minute or two later, his muffled, panicked cries can barely be heard from within, not that many would care to listen to what goes on behind those walls. After all, that's where Umbra, Pure Shadow of Lust, is rumored to hold court...

As dawn arose, the Haven tourists were waved into a nearby nondescript building by a Coronach guard. In the building are several metal parts - rods, gears, all sorts of things imported from Haven. Nodding to each other, the men get to work assembling a strange machine...
Several hours later, the machine is finished.
"Mockingbird," said one of the men into a communicator. "The machine is finished, but we have no word from Teams A and B. What are your orders?"
"Proceed on schedule," came the voice of Mockingbird. "We've come too far to abandon the mission now."
"Roger," said the man, putting down the communicator and smashing it on the ground.
The man walks over to a switch, turns to his comrades, and nods. They nod back and, using his fingers, he counts down from 3, pulling the switch after 1, releasing a burst of foul noise and smells that spread panic throughout the street of Corona. Everywhere, people start screaming in terror
running from the fiends
they are everywhere
The streets are filled with chaos
your world is going to hell
pray for mercy
And it becomes very hard to
think on your sins

One of the mages responsible for keeping up a barrier hears the sound of screaming in the town

Suddenly, the mage is knocked to the ground in a rush of people, who quickly trample him
I warned you
As the masses stomp all across his body, the barrier around Coronach flickers...

Suddenly, the mage is knocked to the ground in a rush of people, who quickly trample him

As the masses stomp all across his body, the barrier around Coronach flickers...
Meanwhile, the men in the warehouse quickly disassemble their machine, breaking the pieces. The people of Corona have enough to panic about now without needing artificial fear devices.
Umbra, meanwhile, has had no luck today trolling for customers, probably due to the whole "they're panicking indoors" thing, and so heads west to Fontin. She figures that there is her best chance of getting off this miserable continent while the getting's good...

Some of the soldiers are taken by surprise and fall - a few of this "some" number are wounded instead of killed and desperately open fire on the new bugs, while Black Jack pulls out a grenade and hurls it at the bugs. All the while, the fighting-fit soldiers and Black Jack slowly fall back towards the shipyard.
Meanwhile, Dr. Y hears the sound of gunfire coming from near the shelter.
"Terrus, Duma," order Dr. Y. "Get rid of the bugs at that building. Nikolai, John, you're with me."
"Wot about me?" asked Patches.
"You're on lookout," said Dr. Y. "If anything more than these bugs shows up sound an alert."
Dr. Y heads off past the shelter, John and Nikolai following, while Duma and Terrus (taking Duma's form) run at the bugs trying to break down the front door and hack away at them.
Meanwhile, a puddle of black ooze... oozes into Fontin from the east, also heading for the shipyard...

Dr. Y and Black Jack team up to fight Minils, Umbra is creepy/basically invisible to the Minils
As Duma and Terrus continue fighting the bugs at the front door, the ooze passes by several of the bugs unmolested. It's not that they don't see her, it's just that she registers to them as another life-absorbing bug. Someone else watching from the shadows, though, knows better...
Meanwhile, Dr. Y, John, and Nikolai arrive at the scene of Black Jack's crew in the middle of battle. Dr. Y pulls out his shotgun and opens fire on the monochromatic Black Jacks, attracting the attention of the real one. John opens fire on the bugs as well, while Nikolai pulls up Light Screens in front of the fake Black Jacks... unfortunately they don't help, and the bugs' smoke bullets phase right through.
"Fancy seeing you here, Doctor!" said Black Jack, firing at any bugs that haven't taken his form while throwing grenades at any who have.
"The pleasure's all yours," said Dr. Y.
"You know him?" asked John.
"I cut off his arm," said Dr. Y.
"For no good reason, might I add," said Black Jack.
"I had plenty of reasons!" shouted Dr. Y. "You work for Majestic and you bring shame to that uniform!"
"Oh, right," said Black Jack, continuing to fire on bugs. "The fact that I wear my father's uniform sends you into a hissy fit. What, does it remind you of how he died under your command?"
"The real Black Jack would never-" began Dr. Y.
"I AM the real Black Jack now," said Black Jack.
Black Jack turns his tommy gun towards Dr. Y and fires... at bugs that were approaching him from behind.
"And I strive to fight with just as much honor as my father did," continued Black Jack. "You're welcome, by the way."
Dr. Y turns his shotgun towards Black Jack and fires at a bug behind him... which was sucking the life force from a Majestic trooper. He ends up blowing the trooper's head off in the process.
"Well, that's a fine 'thank you'!" said Black Jack.

Several Minils join the fake Black Jacks, turning into more copies of Dr. Y. This time, the fake Ys went on evasive, staying on the move while firing their shotguns upon Dr. Y and Black Jack. Some of the Minil-Jacks move in the way of the shipyard, blocking the path with smoke-gunfire. One of them threw a chaff grenade over the area, resulting in the area being cloaked in a field of electronics-disrupting filaments.

As for the safehouse area, some of the Minils do indeed sense Umbra's presence. One of them even borrows her form. With this, the Minil-Umbra shapes its shapeless arm into a hardened hammer head, slamming it against the safehouse door. Said door is starting to crack now, and the people inside are even more scared.

Nikolai unfortunately qualifies as electronic and falls to the ground under the weight of the chaff grenades. I totally didn't have him work on calling up Light Screens before. Nope. Black Jack and Dr. Y dive to the side of the gunfire, the former opening fire on the fake Ys while Dr. Y works on the fake Black Jacks. Umbra heads past both the scenes in the street and at the safehouse, heading straight for the shipyard. The figure in the shadows would follow her, but sees Black Jack and Dr. Y in the streets, pauses, and vanishes beneath the ground...
... Only to phase through the ground behind two Dr. Y clones and stab them both with daggers, which quickly glow with the light of the sun! And, since light is lethal to Gloom soldiers, this is probably lethal if not immediately crippling. Black Jack takes notice of the pale, pointy-eared elf woman.
"Feathertop!" said Black Jack. "My father told me a great many things about you!"
The elf (Feathertop)'s appearance only seems to piss off Dr. Y, who contents himself by firing on bugs and Majestic troopers.

Eleven years ago. Dr. Y is in a training room, dueling swords against Feathertop's daggers, while Black Jack the former looks on. The doctor is holding his own against the much better-trained elf... right up until she phases through the floor, reappears behind Dr. Y, and kicks him to the ground.
"I said no powers," said Dr. Y, slowly pushing himself up.
"You think your enemy will allow you that privilege?" asked Feathertop.
Feathertop kicks Dr. Y in the stomach, sending him back down to the ground.
"I ought to shoot you right now," said Dr. Y.
"Oh, I guarantee you're not fast enough, doctor," said Black Jack. "Not that shooting your own coworkers is a good idea, anyway."
"You hired me for my skills," said Feathertop. "So I'm going to use them. Is there a problem?"
"... Freaking elves..." muttered Dr. Y.

He transforms into a Windigo and gallops past the Minil-Umbra, casting an air of freezing ice behind him as he goes, while Duma busies herself with the non-transformed bugs.

The not-so-damaged Minil-Ys do hang on by a mere thread, but the fairly-damaged ones are slain at the edges of Feathertop's knives.
Another of the Minils noticed Umbra and transformed into a replica. A few of the Minils changed their form to that of Feathertop, throwing forth their own daggers at Dr. Y and Black Jack. The new Minil-Umbra slathers Dr. Y and Black Jack with its shadowy slime.

The other Minil-Umbra is frozen solid - in time, too. One more whack from that hammer head would have gotten that entrance open. The normal Minils are having trouble with Duma, so they transform into Duma-doppels. These Minil-Dumas ganged up on and clawed at the real Duma.

Black Jack rolls out of the way of the shadowy slime and daggers (Dr. Y only stepping to the sides of the latter - and the latter's daggers don't glow with sunlight like the real ones), opening fire on the fake Feathertops, while the Minil-Umbra's slime is absorbed into Dr. Y's body as he continues to fire on the fake Black Jacks. The Minil-Feathertops quickly realize that, after throwing their two daggers, they're completely unarmed. The three continue their fight, complimenting each others' strengths by playing off the Minil-bugs' weaknesses - Black Jack's incorporeal bullets can blast the Minil-Feathertops even if they try to phase through, Feathertop's sunlight daggers cut through any fake Dr. Ys (and Umbras) easily, and fake Black Jacks have all the endurance of an ordinary man and are particularly vulnerable to shotgun blasts.
"What brings you out of hiding, Feathertop?" asked Black Jack.
"Not your concern," said Feathertop.
"Of course," said Black Jack. "I was just wondering, since it looks rather grim, if you'd be nice enough to tell me what you were doing here!"
"No," said Feathertop.
tl;dr they're gonna keep fighting their hardest until brimir and lucas show up to save the day

The real Duma starts vibrating very, very fast - so fast that she essentially vanishes! Meanwhile, Terrus transforms back into regular Terrus, transforms his arm into a hammer, and slams it down hard on the frozen Minil-Umbra, shattering it into several frozen pieces.
"What brings you out of hiding, Feathertop?" asked Black Jack.
"Not your concern," said Feathertop.
"Of course," said Black Jack. "I was just wondering, since it looks rather grim, if you'd be nice enough to tell me what you were doing here!"
"No," said Feathertop.

The real Duma starts vibrating very, very fast - so fast that she essentially vanishes! Meanwhile, Terrus transforms back into regular Terrus, transforms his arm into a hammer, and slams it down hard on the frozen Minil-Umbra, shattering it into several frozen pieces.
Actually, the Minil-Feathertops just regained their daggers. (How do you think the Minils get weapons?) One of them escaped the fracas, leaping onto a building nearby. There, it basked its knives in the sun, collecting energy from it.
One of the Minil-Umbras there quickly constricted Black Jack, intent on consuming him...but then it got hit in the head by some kind of sound-based beam from above, the noise vibrating throughout its amorphous structure and making it lose grip of Jack. The source of the beam, Lucas, walked in.
"I've got some unpleasant questions for the two of you later," Lucas said to Dr. Y and Black Jack, "so try not to run off when we're done here."

Two of the Minil-Dumas also vibrated to match speed and intercept Duma. The other one changed its form to match Terrus. In this state, it used a cannon-arm to blast Terrus back with rapid shots, and swung a hammer-arm into the shelter door. This succeeds in busting the door back, slamming into the last door left. This did some preemptive damage to this door, and Minil-Terrus was about to go in and finish the job...
...but then it got bashed back by a hammer-jab by Brimir!
"Damn Minils!" he shouted. "Don't know when ta leave and let live, do ye?!"
The jut of his hammer had sent the Minil-Terrus tumbling across the street. Brimir then channeled the Magnethead power into Jordenklyv, focusing its electromagnetism on Minil-Terrus's hammer- and cannon-arms. This dragged the Minil right back to Brimir, who finished it with a hammer uppercut!
"Aye, 'tis a good thing. Ye still got it, Jordenklyv!"
One of the Minil-Umbras there quickly constricted Black Jack, intent on consuming him...but then it got hit in the head by some kind of sound-based beam from above, the noise vibrating throughout its amorphous structure and making it lose grip of Jack. The source of the beam, Lucas, walked in.

In order for those daggers to actually get a decent amount of energy from the sun the fake Feathertop is going to have to stand there for about an hour. The real Feathertop follows the fake up the building with mad ninja skills and stabs it in the back before retracting her dagger, leaping off the building, and landing on two more Dr. Y clones, stabbing them.
"I appreciate the honesty," said Black Jack, getting up and double-tapping the Minil-Umbra.
"Those are the only type of questions people ask me," said Dr. Y, continuing to blast Minils, focusing on the ones taking Black Jack's form.

Ten years ago. Dr. Y is pinned under a fallen chunk of ceiling, struggling to get it off. Black Jack comes rushing into the room and grabs the chunk.
"Push up on three," said Black Jack. "One, two, three!"
Working together, the two men lift the chunk off Dr. Y, giving the doctor time to get out from beneath it. He gets up and turns angrily to Black Jack.
"Why aren't you fighting-" began Dr. Y.
"It's a losing battle in there," said Black Jack. "Tempestra's dead, Ramses is running out of bombs, and Feathertop's gone!"
"What do you mean, gone?" asked Dr. Y.
"She's not answering her communicator," explained Black Jack. "And she's not anywhere in the base."
"She turned and ran," spat Dr. Y. "Just like Mary..."
"Mary didn't exactly run, per se..." began Black Jack.
The room shakes and another chunk of building falls - but this time Dr. Y is prepared and tackles Black Jack out of the way.
"Look, there's no time to explain!" said Black Jack. "If we don't do something this entire facility is going to come crumbling down!"

The real Duma, moving at mach speed, zooms off for the shipyards... and stops at the last minute, aiming to trick the fake Dumas into continuing on and running into the water, where slowing down would dump them in the drink - and with fake electrical generators on their back that wouldn't be great.
The real Terrus is blown backwards, but catches his breath and runs in front of the broken down door, turning his arms into cannons and opening fire at every Minil in the area.
"I suppose they don't," said Terrus, answering Brimir's rhetorical question.
Some of the transformed Minils try to gang up on Lucas, who evades their high strikes and delivers low kicks to their legs, stunning them long enough for him to deliver a rising spin-kick into them, knocking them back. His attacks were lined with harmonic energy. Some of the Minils saw this, and took on Lucas's form, utilizing his and his DRACOS Junction's abilities for themselves. One slid in close to Black Jack and delivered a Sonic Palm to his chest, the amp effect blasting him backward.
"Wannabes..." Lucas fought fist-to-fist-to-foot-to-foot with the other Minil-Lucases, until they both struck him back with a Sylph Vortex-to-Flying Axe combo, resulting in Lucas getting face-time with the pavement.
"Rrrgh..." Lucas got up, his soul manifesting in its draconic form again. The Minil-Lucases noticed this, and attempted to manifest their souls...wait, what souls? Now they realized the fault in copying Lucas! All too late - the soul's claws added to the strength of Lucas's Undin Dance as he practically glided in close, striking through the imposters and tearing them to bits.
"How 'bout that? They really are no soul," Lucas mused.

Black Jack is sent flying into a nearby wall, where he slumps down to the ground. As the Minils get close... Dr. Y blasts them away and backs up next to Black Jack, providing him with covering fire.
"The only one who's going to kill you is me," said Dr. Y.
"Noted," said Black Jack, taking his tommy gun and opening fire on any approaching Minils.
Feathertop and John are still fighting, btw. I just find it boring to write "John continues to shoot Minils" or something similar.

This Minil swarm is losing numbers fast. Practically the only ones left of significance are those few Minil-Dumas. The kicked one fell into the water, short-circuiting and bursting into nothing. The tackled one was bumped into Brimir's hammer, which then swung down and crushed it into thin air.
"Haha!" Brimir cheered. "That'll thin 'em out fer now!"
"Haha!" Brimir cheered. "That'll thin 'em out fer now!"
As the Minil swarm is destroyed, Dr. Y keeps thinking back to his first Platoon...

"And what are we supposed to do?" asked Dr. Y. "You know as well as I do we don't have the firepower to take him down!"
"... No," said Black Jack, seriously. "But we can bring this building down."
"Are you crazy?" asked Dr. Y. "You just said-"
"The entire facility is going to crumble, yes," said Black Jack. "But with controlled explosions we can bury him in a pile of rubble. Maybe if we do that we can stop him before this situation gets worse."
"Even if this works," said Dr. Y. "What's going to stop him from just running out before he's buried under rubble?"
"Me," said Black Jack.
A pause. The building shakes.
"Look, if we stand here debating this it may be too late!" said Black Jack. "The only way to make sure he doesn't get out is if I stay behind and keep him still!"
"There's got to be a better way," said Dr. Y.
"There isn't," said Black Jack. "We're too late to save everybody, doctor. At least this way we can stop him from killing again. I'll send Ramses out to get you to safety."
"You can't do this!" said Dr. Y. "I forbid it!"
"Well, consider this a dismissal of your orders, sir," said Black Jack. "Promise me something. When you get out... I don't want you to let this keep you down. I want you to make a difference."
Black Jack walked away, back the way he came.
"Jack," said Dr. Y. "I'm sorry."
"I'm not," said Black Jack. "Had to be me. Anyone else might fail."
With that, Black Jack left. A few minutes later, Ramses came rushing out to Dr. Y.
"We've got to go," said Ramses.
"What's Black Jack doing?" asked Dr. Y.
"Hell if I know," said Ramses, grabbing Dr. Y and flying off.

And he aimed his shotgun right at his head.
