Selfish, cold and composed. That’s how most would describe Grace and as far as appearances go they wouldn’t be wrong. Grace has never been one to show overt emotion unless it’s well earned anger or revulsion. She comes from a family where excessive emotionality was frowned upon and considered immature even if she was a child. Due to this Grace has learned how to twist her words and the words of others to get what she wants or to achieve a means to an end, knowing that coming right out and asking rarely works in her favor.
Gracie is extremely ambitious and cunning and does whatever she can to get ahead and stay there. She is not above lying to get what she wants although it’s not something she is proud of. Blessed with a very curious nature, Grace has often been found many places where she ought not to be, but she’s always ready with a quick story and more often than not worms her way out of trouble. She is an avid eavesdropper and often sticks her nose in where it doesn’t belong. Gracie is a girl with strong convictions and opinions and isn’t loathe to let them be known.
On the other hand she can be kind and generous to those she considers her friends, usually people who have a nose for adventure or are firmly entrenched outside the status quo.
Grace Persephone Haleshire was born the only child of George and Wilhelmina Haleshire, members of a prominent pureblood family. They’d always been a politically active and affluent family, so it comes as no surprise that Gracie would be quite spoiled by her doting parents. Plans were made for her future before she even turned a year old. Plans that her parents would never see come to fruition, at least not in their lifetime.
When Grace was nearly five there’d been an incident involving a magicked car and an icy bridge. She remembers being strapped in the backseat, her parents in the front; it had been dark, cold and water pouring into the car. The next thing she remembers is sitting quietly, alone on the bridge while watching the last of their vehicle sink beneath the water. That was the night her magic finally surfaced while her parents, unconscious, possibly dead sank beneath the water never to return.
Considering that poor Grace had no other living relatives she was placed in the care of her Great-Aunt Gretchen Haleshire’s care. Being the ward of the Secretary of Magic was not all it was cracked up to be. There were photo-ops with forced smiles that made her face ache, claiming how happy she was to be in the care of her aunt. When in reality the two rarely spent time together and when they did it was more on the level of peers than of great-aunt and grand-niece. The two were incapable of connecting on anything more than a polite, genteel level.
By the time Gracie was ten years old she’d been testing her boundaries for some time. She snuck out, she performed unsanctioned magic and she talked back as if she were an adult. Gretchen Haleshire rued the day that she took in the seemingly ungrateful child, knowing that her political aspirations were suffering while she was busy trying to raise a little hellion. So Gretchen shipped the girl off to school as soon as possible where hopefully someone else could sort Gracie out.
They’re still trying.
