Dr. Rainer Thorin Lack

I am where all the pies go.

0 · 175 views · located in New York, 2025

a character in “Instincts Called Survival”, as played by SyringeofHell

Description

Name: Dr. Rainer Thorin Lack. Hates his first and middle name and would rather just be called Lack.
Age: 37
Faction: Nobles
Position: Research Scientist - biotic engineering researcher.
Modification(s): Mechanical left eye, arm and leg - left side reinforced as well, including spine.

Appearance:
- hair: Light brown, short.
- eyes: His eye is grey-blue, the left one being mechanical, and he wears glasses.
- skin: Relatively pale. Heavily scarred on the left side.
- clothing: Often what is practical over what is 'sciencey'. Often found wearing the clothes more likely to be found on a field agent (heavy knit sweaters, combats, boots, vest tops, cargo shorts, etc) than a head of department in a lab. Although he apparently does enjoy donning a lab coat and goggles from time to time.
- other: He's short (5'6") and stocky. Although he's a tad pudgy around the middle, the rest of him is built pretty powerfully and... square-ly, like a little tank. Lack often forgets to shave and is sometimes quite stubbly. He has some really nasty scars on his left cheek and indeed all over the left side of his body.

Theme Song: Human Disease by Sturmreaktor.

Picture("Anime" Preferable): No anime, I'm afraid. I drew him a bit too fat and his face is weird. But you get the gist of what he looks like.

History

History: Lack has been a Noble since his birth. All well and good for him, because since a young age, Lack has been both forced and desired to become a scientist. Young Lack did consistently superbly in school, and often spent his time at home making things, tinkering and (without nastiness) dissecting animals. Although his other grades were good, he really shone in biology and later on metalwork and engineering when he got older. In no time at all, he decided he'd be a biotic engineer.

When he went to university, Lack delighted in studying but was somewhat of a recluse. The closest he got to anything was being a student prep room assisstant - he'd spend a lot of his time preserving things in jars, checking the geiger counters were working and building demonstration models for the younger students. He was put up to being a student assisstant before long and worked incredibly hard at his job and at studying. He graduated, got an engineer's degree and finally worked incredibly hard to get his higher doctorate. By the time he'd finished all this (around age 30 or so), he worked in a labratory developing new ways to improve biotics. However, the place was bombed and most of Lack's left side was horrifically damaged. Only through his intelligence was he not disposed of, and even then he had to cling tenaciously to life and often push himself to do things (like walk) before he was ready.

The result was a man with a fierce way of clinging to life. Since then he was been working in one of the larger labs with many people working under him.

Other Notes:
Lack is unusually jovial and good natured for someone in such a serious position. He can come over as gruff and serious at first, as he is often found frowning, taking notes, walking around very quickly and otherwise looking uncaring. He's kind and very generous, expecting nothing back but "thank you" and sometimes not even that. He is, however, blunt and can come over as rude a lot of the time. He doesn't even realise he's doing it. He tends to ask too many questions, or too few, and is prone to threatening people with guards/himself if they don't co-operate on the simplest of things. He hates willful ignorance as well, and will not suffer fools.

- aspirations: To learn all he can, to help forward mankind, to learn to subside on things that aren't coffee or stodgy foods.
- fears: Falling in the scientific community, being considered weird.
- flaws: Bad tempered, blunt, socially inept in a strange way, rushes everything apart from his work.
- strengths: Tenacious, patient, accomodating, generous.

So begins...
