Hoggle the Dwarf

Hoggle. Not to be confused with Hoghead or Hogwart. (NPC, Adoptable)

0 · 366 views · located in The Labyrinth Universe

a character in “Labyrinth: Into the Underground and Beyond”, as played by CassilineVow

Description

Age they appear and/or are: Dwarves generally age very slowly and can live longer then humans by a few hundred years…Give or take. Hoggle himself is considered still relatively young by Dwarven standards. He is likely equivalent to about the age of 30.

Physical Description:
Hoggle is average height (for a dwarf) and stocky with short legs and arms along with a head that looks slightly too big for his body. He typically dresses in earth tones as is traditional and is most often wearing a Dwarven crafted leather vest over a white poet shirt and brown patched breaches that have seen better days.

Personality

Personality: Hoggle is a professed coward although when called to do so he has been known to act quite brave indeed for the sake of helping those he cares about. While not always ethical in his duties Hoggle does possess some basic moral fiber…Some of the time anyway.

Mostly he is just incredibly prone to the demands of his own guilty conscience which does a far better job at making Hoggle feel horrible then anything Jareth could ever do to him.

It does seem that Hoggle lives in perpetual fear of the Goblin King’s wrath. But this may be rooted more in his desire to avoid conflict as he is not a creature whom possessed a great deal of backbone. All in all, Hoggle seems quite at home within the Labyrinth and has a unique understanding of how the Labyrinth and its Denizens operate.

Equipment

His most notable accessories include a cap, a short sword which he acquired during Sarah’s battle in the Goblin City (Kept mostly for nostalgia and not usually on his person) and a coil of rope or other tools of the grounds keeping trade.

Hoggle also continues to wear a pink plastic beaded bracelet given to him by Sarah Williams. The rest of his collection of ‘Jewels’ as he calls his precious trinkets are kept on a string at his belt. While not a person of many personal boundaries, Hoggle does draw the line at anyone touching his ‘property’.

“Thems my rightful property!”

History

History: It seems that there was likely quite a large population of dwarves living in the Goblin Kingdom at one time and it is suggested, although not directly inferred, that the castle itself as well as the maze was actually built by dwarves. As it currently stands, Hoggle appears to be the only remaining person left of his kind within the confines of the Labyrinth.

Hoggle seems to mostly live a solitary existence filtering out unwanted visitors and acting as a sort of grounds keeper under the watchful and disdainful eye of the Goblin King.

As to how much sway Jareth actually has over the dwarf, it would seem Hoggle is more intimidated by Jareth then controlled by him as Hoggle has been known to defy Jareth’s will on various occasions. Acting against the Goblin King rather than with him, as in the case with Sarah Williams. Jareth retaliates largely by threatening and belittling the poor gentleman. While their relationship is largely a combative one it seems that Jareth still manages to entrust Hoggle with various responsibilities he seems unwilling to entrust to anyone else.

Its also important to note that Hoggle is a member of the Elder Council an is a reluctantly active member of th KotL. (Knights of the Labyrinth)

Magical Ability: Maneuvering the Labyrinth, Sensing danger (more of a learned survival instinct then a magical ability)

The KotL:

Name & Council Status: Hoggle, (Reluctantly Active)

Race: Dwarf

Division: The Stone Maze, (Division 1) Note: Hoggle also moonlights his patrol regularly in the Hedge Maze (Division 2) and will also on occasion investigate trouble areas such as the oubliettes and the Labyrinth boarders of the Fire Marsh.

Prior Rank: Squire (Hoggle earned the more recent rank of Colonel for his honorable services and bravery during the Battle of the Goblin City that occurred during Sarah William's Quest to save her brother Toby.)

Motivation:
Hoggle insist he is a coward and that he has no real motivation to uphold the mission and beliefs of the Labyrinth Knights. However his actions in recent years particularly during the quest of Sarah Williams, seems to suggest otherwise. If nothing else, Hoggle possesses a dignified sense of fair play which is often in direct contrast to the Goblin King's tactics. While Hoggle admits that Jareth frightens and intimidates him, the dwarf seems mostly able and willing to openly defy the Goblin King's orders if he deems them to be misguided and or extremely underhanded.

Quote: "You've got to understand my position. I'm a coward and Jareth scares me."

So begins...
