Description

Image

Full Name: Mallek Alderman

Nicknames/Aliases: The Librarian

Age: 48

Gender: Male

Species: Pure human

Occupation: VEGA Master researcher in applications of Magefire

Description: At a glance, Mallek would look like your average middle age man - thin brown greying hair, somewhat pronounced wrinkles and a purposeful walk. Take a second longer, though, and you begin to notice nuances, like the fact that he always wears an overcoat or that his left arm is made of brass and is powered by Magefire. His appearance tends towards the more well built, yet his demeanour and brilliant green grey eyes (regularly hidden behind magnification goggles) show a deep intelligence echoing his profession.

His brass arm, a replacement for one lost during an incident during the early days of Eso Tech, was constructed by him and possesses both significantly greater strength as well as latent magical potential - due to its power source. The arm possesses a self contained Magefire store, but he also possesses a backpack providing it with more power, leading to greater strength. His arm can also be outfitted with several attachments, some tools, others weapons.

Personality: Mallek's general appearance is that of an intelligent, serious yet mild mannered man with only a fleeting interest in most other peoples' personal concerns. Even so, when he or a person he is in acquaintance with is threatened, Mallek can bring forth and inner strength and rage to defend what he holds true. For the most part, he can be stubborn on his opinions, but can easily be swayed by technological change, often those by VEGA. His actions at VEGA, though, have left him with a slight disassociation with reality, causing him to become a sort of recluse - avoiding social conflict when possible. Even so, he is willing to talk to other people should the need arise.

Mallek holds a slight distrust to technology not based on Magefire, and possess mild racist views against non-humans. Despite this, he does have friends of other races, and his views are strictly personal, rarely affecting his professional life. He holds greater distrust towards both mages and The Order of the Dragon due to their 'unnatural perception of reality'.

Skills: Mallek is incredibly adept with machines - particularly those based on Magefire - and has helped develop some of the major leading technologies including the Esoteric Extractor and the Magefire grid. As well as this, he also works on many personal projects such as the Magic Dampening Field and the Long Distance Communicator. His current major project is the transcription of many literary works onto metal tablets through arcane etchings which can then be reconstructed into words by another Eso Tech machine. This, as well as his current near permanent inhabitation of the central archives, has lead to people calling him 'The Librarian'. He has since become the overseer of the archives as a result.

Weaknesses: While Mallek is strong, and has combat experience, he is not adept at close range combat. Without the use of his arm or other Eso Tech, Mallek would be near useless in combat, and could potentially regress within himself due to 'Magefire' withdrawal caused be his unnatural dependence on it. Mallek is also fearful of both true mages and dragons, the first of which caused him to invest time in the Magic Dampening Field.

Brief History: Born the son of a blacksmith, Mallek has always been keen around metals and, later, engineering. Over time, he proved to be extremely talented when it came to technology, building a simple clock when he was eight and a crossbow when he was ten. This aptitude for such things netted him a scholarship from a precursor of VEGA, the royal technologist guild, to which he joined at the age of 19.

Over time he helped create a precursor to the widely used Magefire called Technomagic, whereby clockwork devices could store and manipulate magic when infused by a mage. This technology quickly disappeared in the mists of time, though, when two of his co-workers - actually agents for a rival Empire - stole the plans and their test mage destroyed the prototype devices in a fit of insanity. Even so, Mallek and his fellow researchers retained enough of the knowledge of the device to help create Magefire and, in turn, bring about the formation of VEGA.

For his past work, Mallek, then 42, was given the title of Master researcher and tasked with developing applications for Magefire. Working independently and in small teams, Mallek helped research and develop better mechanisms for creating Magefire, leading up to by far the most efficient method - the Esoteric Extractor. Over time, the morally ambiguous work that VEGA performed hammered at his sanity, causing Mallek to become ever more reclusive to the organisation. His self exiled himself from Witchfell as a result and now acts more as a distant benefactor to the organisation, forever perfecting Magefire technologies.

Other: Despite remaining a fully fledged, if distant, member of VEGA, his allegiances with the organisation are weakening. He will be willing to turn against them should they commit a serious atrocity. He doesn't know what atrocity this could be, and he is fully aware of Rah'von's imprisonment.

So begins...

The screwdriver turned, locking the tiny, off gold screw into the device and tightening the final seal. Upon giving it the once over, the Librarian stood up and moved into a clear area of his office. Upon placing it on an ornate stand more suited to a place of religion, he gave the device a final check over, then stood back. Raising his left arm, he clicked his fingers first causing a spark, then a flame no bigger than that of a candle to rest on his brass index finger. Carefully, he move towards the device again and twisted one of many almost identical tiny cranks on the side. Almost instantly, the flame flickered, regularly almost going out, despite the lack of any wind. He unwound the crank again and the flame returned to its natural state, regularly flickering.

Moving around the device, he turned another, larger crank, before pulling a lever. Instantly, the Librarian was blown back as if a fully laden cart had smashed into his left arm, the flame whipping out. Arresting his stumble, he tried to near the machine, but his artificial arm wouldn't move with him, as if blocked by a sponge wall. He quickly noted something in a nearby book before pulling a lever on the wall, dropping a metal cage around the device. Reaching through a hold in the cage, he deactivate the device and returned it to his tool table.

Knocking at his heavy oaken wooden door brought him back from his meditative state.

"Come in" he announced with practised ease. A boy, little older than 20, came in and stood to mock attention. His clothing clearly showed that he was a member of VEGA.
"Master Researcher, the Palace wishes for a report on the..."
"Magic Dampener, yes, I know" he interrupted while searching for a brown envelope. "Here," he offered to the messenger. As the messenger turned to leave, though, the Librarian spoke up again. "When is the... what is it called...the Palace open day again?"
"It..uh...it begins later today Master Researcher" announced the messenger.
"Later today? Well, I best go with you then. I can show off the dampener in person"
"But Mast...."
"No need to protest, my good man, but I do have other business to attend to at the Palace." He gave a slight smirk towards the boy. "Well, lets not hesitate!" he chimed as he grabbed the satchel containing the device.

There stood the palace, resplendent in its colours against the industrial backdrop of the rest of the city. High above flitted flightships like abnormally large sky whales. Mallek and the messanger made there way up the steps to the main door that arched high above them. One of the door guards stopped them.

"Halt. The palace is not yet open for the public!" said the man, with a gruff tone.
"Actually, I am here to deliver a report of my research to the palace staff." He glanced at the messenger holding the paper report, "Well, more of a demonstration actually."
The guard glanced with him with suspicion.
"Oh, sorry, my fault. VEGA Master Researcher Mallek Alderman here as requested" he bowed to the guard, disregarding the actual present social etiquette and informal rank Mallek possessed over the guard. The man stepped back a little, clearly a little embarrassed as a result.
"Deeply sorry Master Researcher. You are free to enter." Nodding at the other guards, the doors swung open and Mallek, with the messenger in tow, entered.

As soon as the doors closed, the messenger - clearly in a hurry - ran off down one of the side corridors, leaving Mallek surrounded by guards and servants preparing for the festivities. Walking over to the nearest guard, he asked where the Palace seniority were.
"Sorry sir, but they are currently arranging for today's activities. Feel free to look around, there should be a recess within the hour."
Mallek responded with thanks, before making his way down a random corridor to look around.
