Mr. Guess can be described as an upright teacher with a great sense of humor. He is fair, organized, and overall very nice and friendly. His students are often relaxed and focused in his class, with the exception of a few. Although Mr. Guess's history class is typically a fun period, he is known to give unnecessarily hard quizzes and tests. However, those who study and pay attention to his lectures do quite well, and never seem to have a problem with him or the grades he gives. Some say that he is rude, but that's only because they can't keep up with his sarcasm. To put it simply, his class isn't for the faint of heart, and it is CERTAINLY not for those who can't laugh at themselves every once in a while.
A goal-oriented individual, Raymond is a man who works hard for his success. He gives off a strong, proud aura that bursts with confidence. He doesn't put up with any crap, and isn't afraid in the slightest to stand up for himself or others. He is fiercely loyal, and protective of those he loves. A social butterfly among the staff, Mr. Guess can usually be found having a chat with the other teachers during his free time. There always seems to be a cup of coffee in his hands while he converses. Even with people he doesn't know all too well, he shows interest and a sense of caring in what they say or do. With his desire to learn new things, many people find him approachable.
While being sensitive to those around him, Mr. Guess is also quite passionate about his interests. He's one of those teachers who doesn't mind talking about the football or baseball game that happened last night. One thing he love doing for sure is sailing. Every summer, him and his wife go sailing out in Boston, his hometown. The married couple also enjoys traveling to different countries and landmarks. By the time school starts back up again, Mr. Guess will have plenty of new stories from his adventures. Although Ray Guess may come off as intimidating, outlandish, or rough, once you get to know him, you will see that he can be one of the most caring teachers in Mount Olympus Academy. To some students, he's like a second father.
Despite his well-known reputation as a teacher, Mr. Guess's backstory almost seems a bit unusual for him. His early life was spent humbly at an orphanage in Boston, Massachusetts. Although the treatment there wasn't harsh, Raymond was blatantly reckless at a young age, and ran away. He always had felt as though there was someone out there waiting for him, and decided to pursue his gut feeling when he was just nine years old. After all, he had no knowledge of his family or parents. He courageously ran through the city looking for some sort of answer to his mysteriously unanswered questions.
Coincidentally, his gut feeling proved worthy of his escape. A young girl by the name of Cora found him on the streets and let him stay with her family for a while until they could track down one of his relatives. It was only two weeks later when Gladys Guess, Raymond's aunt, appeared out of the blue and into his life. When she arrived at the Sawyer residence, (the family who was taking care of Raymond) she quickly made the young boy pack his bags, and drove him to upstate New York. It was there that his aunt told him of his complicated past and origin.
Raymond was born to Poseidon, the god of the sea, and Sarah Guess, a famous marine biologist. After Raymond's birth and Poseidon's departure for "work", Sarah was killed. Her cause of death was presumably murder, as there were bullet holes in her chest when inspectors found her. Other than the evidence displayed in her body, there was no proof that she had been killed by someone else, and if she had been killed by someone else, who the murderer would be. The infant demigod was put in a Boston orphanage shortly after his mother's death. Gladys did not bother to claim him due to her fear of the sea god. She told Raymond that it was best for him to stay at the orphanage for all those years, although he begged to differ.
Ray had a pretty normal life throughout his elementary school days. Due to his aunt's interest in the sport, the young demigod decided to take up sailing. His pursuit in the hobby led him to discovering his powers. One day, he fell in the water and found that he could breathe fine, even though he didn't know how to swim. When he was fourteen, Gladys told her nephew about Mount Olympus Academy, a school for demigods like him. He agreed to attend, and spent his high school career at the academy.
Raymond left quite a mark on the school. He was one of the strongest competitors when it came to battles, and extraordinarily developed his powers. He was talented at sports, and became quite popular among his peers. He made a variety of friends, and was surprised to see Coraline Sawyer, the girl who's family had taken care of him when he was younger, at the academy. Ironically, Cora had come from a long line of demigods. Her great grandfather had a child with Tyche, her grandfather fell in love with Hebe, And as the child of Hebe, Cora's father had an affair with Khione, goddess of snow. Raymond and Cora quickly became friends, and made a great team throughout their time at Mount Olympus Academy. Eventually, the two started dating, and years later, they joined hands in marriage. The two moved back to Boston, and later, Mr. Guess found himself as the history teacher of the academy where he used to study. To this day, Mr. Guess still says that there's nowhere he'd rather be than on the staff of M.O. Academy.
Anything else?: Because of Tyche's blood in Coraline's family, she has had experiences of great luck, including winning the lottery and winning the million dollar jackpot from a casino. This has made the couple quite rich and prosperous in whatever they do. A thing most people don't know about Mr. Guess is that he secretely covets being the teacher of the Greek Mythology class. Although he readily enjoys history and finds it to be quite interesting, there's nothing he loves more than the creatures and action-packed stories of his ancestors. Last but certainly not least, Mr. Guess is trying to convince the school to have a sailing team this year. The plans for the team may be pushed until next year, but Mr. Guess will do all that he can in order to share his love of sailing with his students.
